Like any experience, his year spent with the First Infantry Division stationed in the rice paddies near Saigon included good times as well as bad. But he also remembers the exhilaration of helicopter rides over serpentine rivers and the time he introduced village kids to a gumball machine.

About the Author
Steven Burchik grew up in New York City and earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College during the turbulent 1960s. He worked his way through school, including a stint at the New York Daily News, and remained active on campus—even starting a second student newspaper to provide an outlet for students to voice different views.
After graduating, he entered the US Army at the peak of the Vietnam War. He trained at various bases in the United States then spent a year in the rice paddies northeast of Saigon in the role of a forward observer as a sergeant with the First Infantry Division. He later earned his MBA from Michigan State University and had a successful career as a marketing executive and entrepreneur in the food industry.
Married with grown children, Burchik enjoys pursuing photography and sailing on San Francisco Bay. Compass and a Camera, his memoir of his Vietnam War experience, is his first book.

An honest firsthand account of the Vietnam War

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although I was fortunate enough to be a few years younger than the author and missed having to go to Vietnam myself, I have always been interested in and curious about the war. I often wondered how I would have responded to it and what my experience would have been. Reading this firsthand account allowed me to vicariously experience it through him. I only hope that I would have conducted myself as well as he did and also been as fortunate to return home safely. Unfortunately, many didn't and I can only offer my thanks to them and to Steven for serving our country. I particularly appreciated the candidness in which Steven told his story. It was his honesty that made me feel that I was there experiencing it in his shoes ... or actually in his wet and soggy boots. I appreciated that he didn't try to glamorize or pump up his account, but just honestly told his story and experience. If I had to serve, I would have been proud to have been in his company. I was also very impressed with his compassion and genuine interest in the people and the children of Vietnam as they tried to live out their everyday lives in the midst of the war. Lastly, I don't know how he managed to take and keep over 4000 photos in a pre-digital era and that his finance Christina kept all of his letters so that Steven could recount his story for us with so much detail some 40 years later. I am glad she did and recommend this book to anyone interested in learning what it was like to be a soldier in the Vietnam War.

Love of family and fiancee kept a citizen soldier focused on life after Vietnam

I'm a few years younger than the author and was in college while he was serving his year in Vietnam. Like another reviewer, I had a high lottery number, 333 in my case, in the first draft lottery and so was never called. Because the war was so unpopular at home, many returning vets were reluctant to talk about their experiences. As one who fully expected to get drafted, I spent a lot of time wondering what I would have experienced. This book did a great job of giving me one man's experience. It's clear that there are many other stories to be told, many of which will be very different, but which also will have certain themes in common with the author's experience. I hope this book encourages other vets to write about those experiences, so those of us who didn't serve, can better understand what they went through. A low key, but very real thread throughout the book, is the love story between the author and his fiancee. The author makes it clear that he stayed connected to family and his love throughout his year and that this sustained him. I think this is what drew me in to the story and made it a true citizen soldier's experience., and not just another war story.

He does a wonderful job of walking the reader through the day-to-day drudge ...

In talking with friends, I keep referring to Steven Burchik's book, Compass and a Camera, as "matter-of-fact" in tone, with gripping prose and deep emotion. He does a wonderful job of walking the reader through the day-to-day drudge and monotony of the Viet Nam war, days that were punctuated by life-and-death challenges, sad losses and momentous gains -- those dry socks, for example, or the life-preserving letters from his fiancee. Steven gives us a clear-eyed, unromanticized account of serving in a war that was politically unpopular. He carries no vendetta, no simmering resentment. He is touched by the Vietnamese people he meets and generous in his encounters with them. What a valuable gift to all Americans who still have no idea what it was like to be called up for a war that created such profound conflict at home. I followed 365 days with Steven until he got off the plane back home and I closed the book with tears and wonder. I hope we will start talking about what happened 50 years ago, with all the pain and sorrow we can and should now acknowledge. Reading this book might get us started.
