About the Author
Birmingham, Alabama native, Lawayne Orlando Childrey is a national Edward R. Murrow award winning journalist. He has also won numerous Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters awards. In 2014 the Alabama Community College System named Childrey as one of its most outstanding alumnus in the institutions fifty year history. As a result, the ACCS awarded a $5,000 scholarship in Childrey's name to a deserving Alabama high school senior. During the same year, Childrey was named as alumnus of the year for Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee and serves as a national Voice Over artist, HIV/AIDS activists and motivational and keynote speaker. The finest non-fiction work of 2014 offers more than inspiration

Lawayne Childrey. Remember this name. Lawayne Childrey. I met Lawayne at a recent book signing event. We spoke, he handed me his book. "What's it about?" I asked. "A gay black man from the south survives a crack addiction and HIV diagnosis to become a respected journalist."
"Wow," was my first and simple reaction. And then I read his book. "Wow" doesn't begin to cover it. Lawayne is a survivor who has been through considerably more than his description. A tragic house fire occurred early in his journey ... resulting many years later in a transformation: A remarkable, personal transformation from troubled child and adult to a man I'm convinced has a future inspiring and motivating others.
Someone close to me was recently having some difficulties of her own. I asked her to read "Peeling Back the Layers" to place her own issues in perspective. She could not put it down.
But the question remains, "Is this a good book?" The answer is, a thousand times, yes. "Peeling Back the Layers" takes a mostly sequential view of Lawayne's life, including his eventual spiritual re-awakening. The book may be taken as "religious" by some and that's okay. For those of us who are not religious, Lawayne's spirituality and belief does not - and I have to stress this - make this book impertinent. Quite the contrary. This book is therapy for anyone who needs it, and a re-affirmation for all that hope is never lost.
And that's about the strongest message there is. This is the finest non-fiction release of last year and, so far, my favorite non-fiction of 2015 as well.

Great Book!

I felt like I was reading a novel by the late, great E. Lynn Harris. The openness and vulnerability used to relay the story makes this book a must read. It gives inspiration that you can overcome any adversity through faith in God. My favorite quote from the book is "Whenever God gives you something to do, he'll give you everything you need to do it. All we have to do is put our faith into action." Those are words to live by, regardless of your calling in life.

AWESOME, POWERFUL READ!!

"Peeling Back the Layers: A Story of Trauma, Grace and Triumph," aside from the Bible, is the most inspirational, transformational, and motivational book I have ever read. I could not stop reading until I got to the end!! LaWayne, the author, literally takes you inside the mind and the world of a person who has faced not just one traumatic experience but a plethora of life challenges that could have negatively affected his perspective on life. Yet he has taken his pain and turned it into his power, his tragedies into triumphs. I know this book will impact the lives of countless individuals. I plan to use it during several of my seminar sessions and even in my sermons. Thank you, LaWayne, for sharing YOU to make a better US! God bless!!
