About the Author
Mark Allen Baker is a former business executive (General Electric/Genigraphics Corporation, assistant to the president and CEO), author (fifteen books), historian and writer (over two hundred articles). A graduate of the State University of New York, with postgraduate work completed at MIT, RIT and George Washington University, his expertise has been referenced in numerous periodicals, including USA Today, Sports Illustrated and Money magazine. Following his 1997 book, Goldmine's Price Guide to Rock & Roll Memorabilia, he appeared as a co-host on the VH-1 series Rock Collectors. Baker has also been a featured speaker at many events, including the Hemingway Days Festival and Writers Conference in Key West, Florida. He may also be familiar to some as the former co-owner of Bleachers Restaurant & Sports Bar (Liverpool, New York). Acting as a historian for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Baker is the only individual who has been a volunteer, chairperson and sponsor of an Induction Weekend event, both inside and outside the village of Canastota. He has also published artwork, articles and books related to the museum. Baker turns his attention to the hardwood for a book about basketball to be published in the fall of 2010.

Huzzah, Huzzah, Huzzah and a final Huzzah!

The thoroughness, thoughtfulness and integrity of the author’s work shines from nearly every page of this work. His strong emphasis on the contribution of women during the Revolution will certainly secure his place among many readers, as will his select mix of Connecticut families. Even though names like Sarah Pierce, Lucretia Shaw, Samuel Peters, and even Tapping Reeve have fallen through the cracks of man history books, Baker decides to not only resurrect them, but place them at the vanguard of the state’s rich history. For this alone he should be praised. The black & white photography supplements the work perfectly and really adds to the richness of the work. I wish however that some of the plates would have been in color. I also wish, and perhaps its out of my own selfishness, that the work would have been longer. Still this is a strong and entertaining read and gets four huzzahs!

An engaging and intimate portrait of the Connecticut families of the new nation. Thoroughly enjoyable in presentation and format, the author presents several post-revolution vignettes of these remarkable "freedom families" from one of Geo. Washington's closest advisers, David Humphries to the Litchfield Academy. There is a lot here for either casual reader or researcher. The Great Experiment so bravely sought by our forefathers comes to fruition as we see the nation expand and read these fully researched biographies. From politicians, doctors, clergymen, writers, lawyers and early social activists, Connecticut provided a wealth of remarkable citizens that formed our early history. The photos alone and abundant concise information make this a must read.
