"DeWees offers up a win for gothic romance . . . sizzles with chemistry sure to please readers." --Library Journal
The ghost may be the least of her problems... Vivacious actress Sybil Ingram looks forward to a life of security when she leaves the theater to marry a wealthy American. But when he dies on their wedding night, she finds herself a penniless widow. Her only legacy is Brooke House, a Gothic revival manor in the wilds of the Hudson River Valley. However, the eerie mansion comes with two tenants. One is a hostile ghost. The second, and far worse, is former violinist Roderick Brooke--the most insolent, dangerous, maddeningly gorgeous man she's ever met.
As Sybil and Roderick engage in a battle of wills--and wits--she finds herself increasingly drawn to him despite her growing suspicion that there is a connection between him and the spirit that haunts Brooke House. But soon an even greater threat arises: the mysterious queen of local society, Mrs. Lavinia Dove. For reasons that Sybil can't imagine, Mrs. Dove is determined to have Brooke House and Roderick for herself... if necessary, by deadly means.
Mysterious and moving, sparkling and spooky, Nocturne for a Widow is a brilliant fusion of romantic comedy and gothic romance. Readers who love historical romantic suspense will also want to explore DeWees's other gothics, With This Curse (2015 Daphne du Maurier Award winner) and Sea of Secrets (2012 RONE Award winner).

"[DeWees brings] delicious humor to the forefront, creating characters and a plot that balance classic Gothic suspense and lighthearted humor so deftly that she nearly creates an entirely new genre -- the cozy Gothic romance." --Sweet Rocket "The sexual tension between Sybil and Roderick is absolutely delicious and keeps building to a crescendo at the end. ... Nocturne for a Widow is a delightful tale that anyone with a sense of humor will enjoy." --InD'Tale magazine, crowned heart review "Sybil Ingram, the heroine, is vastly engaging, unique, and funny throughout the story. ... The two main characters are witty, sharp-tongued, and intricately likable. ...Ms. DeWees captured a believable, seamless, and absolutely convincing progression of romance between the hero and the heroine." --Caitlyn Mitchell, Maudlin's Shoes

About the Author
Amanda DeWees is an author and editor based in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her PhD in English literature from the University of Georgia and likes to startle people by telling them that her dissertation topic was 19th-century vampire literature. Besides writing, her passions include movies, costume design, ghost stories, and sparkly things in general. She loves the Victorian era and concocting stories set in that time period . . . partly for the dresses, she must admit. and my favorite so far
By Eclectic Reader
Nocturne for a Widow is Amanda DeWees's latest gothic romance, and my favorite so far. The heroine, a celebrated British actress and aging (at the age of 28) ingenue, decides to "retire" from the theater by accepting an offer of marriage from one of her many admirers, an older American hotelier. She severs all ties with her troupe, sells her belongings, and arrives in New York only to find her intended on his deathbed, his business ruined. She marries him anyway and is widowed within hours. With few options and with no money to inherit, she sets off on a journey to his home in upstate NY, on which she can lay some slender claim. There she finds herself "stepmother" to a tempestuous and extremely attractive man (think Rufus Sewell at his broody best), who claims the house as his own. As they are forced to share the spooky, haunted house until a judge can decide its disposition, they fall in love. The spirit that lives there has definite ideas as to the outcome of the real estate wrangle and the romance, plus a need to have her murder solved! The heroine is delightful, funny, and determined. The hero is to die for. The writing is splendid, especially the snappy dialog, the suspense, and the characterizations. The author includes some interesting details about the theater and costuming that give the story a feeling of authenticity. This book is another winner.

Good Gothic companion to WITH THIS CURSE.

If you read DeWees' With This Curse, you'll want to read this one too. WTC is about Clara Croft, seamstress who designed and sewed clothing for a famous English theater actress but was forced to leave her job, ended up married to the brother of her first love and living in a dark, gloomy, possibly haunted mansion.
This new book is about that actress, Sybil Ingram, and occurs at the same time as Clara's story (1854, I believe) but, of course, in a different place and both books are independent of each other. In this one the actress finds it necessary to give up her career and moves to America to marry an older, rich hotel magnate who became attracted to her when she and her acting troupe were on an American tour. She makes it across the ocean just in time to marry but is soon widowed. And to top it off, her husband had had such financial reversals that he died in debt.
No one, and, in particular, her deceased husband's lawyer and financial advisor, is helpful. She is strongly encouraged to go back where she came from, but poor Sybil has burned all her bridges in England and, in addition, is without any funds. She insists that a vague clause in her husband's will leaves her in possession of Brooke House, a large mansion outside New York City and goes there, having no other alternatives.
Well, of course it's not welcoming, seems haunted, and she meets uncooperative people, the worst of whom is her deceased husband's stepson. He's dark and brooding, of course, and has some tragedy in his past. So on we go with the Gothic story.
DeWees writes well, is obviously well read and has lots of literary quotes in her book and a good command of the language. Yes, I know that all authors should have a good command of the language but it's not all that common nowadays, especially since the advent of e-books, allowing everyone with an inflated image of his/her writing talent to put out a book. DeWees really does know how to write and I enjoyed the reading of this book.
I did not feel like giving it a 5-star rating, however, because the story was a bit tame for a Gothic. No scares, the haunting entity didn't feel evil (for a reason, of course) and most everything moved along very predictably and with no suspense to speak of. The evil character of the plot was indeed evil but even that person didn't give me a good scare at any moment. The only thing that I couldn't predict was exactly how the evil character was going to be eliminated.

My new auto-buy author!

Amanda DeWees is a gothic romance gem. In many ways -- the suspense, the humor, and the light, sweet romance -- DeWees reminds me of classic Mary Stewart and Barbara Michaels that just isn't written anymore. The writing is elegant but doesn't detract from the atmosphere and characters it builds, who (aside from the totally evil single-minded villain in classical Gothic fashion) are very believable and multi-faceted.
In Nocturne, DeWees spins a tale of a desperate English actress firmly "on the shelf" at age of 28 and no longer able to play the ingenue. Yet, she is still naive in many ways and falls prey to those seeking to exploit her sweet nature. After an unfortunate series of events, she ends up in the picturesque Hudson River Valley in an old house with a dark secret. There's a pleasant cast of small-town characters, including a likable vicar and his spinster sister, to lighten the mood. DeWees employed more humor in this story -- the witty repartee lobbed between the hero and heroine -- than in her other books, and it's a nice edition that I hope she continues to weave through future stories. A must-read if you enjoy light romances (no sex) with mystery and superstitious elements.
