Farming was the basis of the wealth that made England worth invading, twice, in the eleventh century, while trade and manufacturing were insignificant by modern standards. In Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming, the authors employ a wide range of evidence to investigate how Anglo-Saxon farmers produced the food and other agricultural products that sustained English economy, society, and culture before the Norman Conquest.
The first part of the volume draws on written and pictorial sources, archaeology, place-names, and the history of the English language to discover what crops and livestock people raised, and what tools and techniques were used to produce them. In part two, using a series of landscape studies - place-names, maps, and the landscape itself, the authors explore how these techniques might have been combined into working agricultural regimes in different parts of the country. A picture emerges of an agriculture that changed from an essentially prehistoric state in the sub-Roman period to what was recognisably the beginning of a tradition that only ended with the Second World War. Anglo-Saxon farming was not only sustainable, but infinitely adaptable to different soils and geology, and to a climate changing as unpredictably as it is today.

Review
readers new to this subject area will especially appreciate the clear and fluently written prose that in less accomplished hands could easily have been encumbered by dense description and technical jargon ... the authors should be congratulated for a highly successful scholarly collaboration that has yielded what will no doubt come to be regarded as an essential text on Anglo-Saxon farming for many years to come. Gabor Thomas, Antiquity worthwhile, and will guide researchers to useful sources. Christopher Dyer, English Historical Review The authors must be congratulated on a book which will be useful to a wide range of scholars. They assimilate and present material from a variety of disciplines and pack an enormous amount of detail into its pages, yet it is uniformly interesting and enlightening ... this is a fine work, well written and illustrated, and likely to remain the standard textbook for a long time - for both those who know about Anglo-Saxon England and those who know about farming. Paul Cavill, Medieval Settlement Research

Transforming English Agriculture

Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming, Debby Banham and Rosamond Faith. Oxford University Press ISBN 978-019-920794-7
Did you know that the Anglo Saxons failed to domesticate the wild duck? Or that they were the first to introduce Rye and Oats into England? These and many other fascinating facts can be found in Debby Banham and Rosamond Faith’s authoritative work, Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming. The writers make extensive use of primary written sources, pictorial and archaeological evidence, place names and linguistic evidence to discover what crops and livestock Anglo Saxons raised, and what tools and techniques were used to produce them. They include a very thorough bibliography and short glossary which is useful for those who want to pursue their interests in these matters further.
Debby Banham is a medieval historian who teaches at the Universities of Cambridge and London and has written articles and books on Anglo Saxon farming diet and medicine, she has written the first half of the book where she examines the types of crops produced and the tools and techniques used to produce them. She examines animal husbandry and in particular the role of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. She concludes with the assertion that, in terms of species ‘Anglo Saxon livestock consisted of the same animals we are used to seeing today, apart from ducks’. (p 105)
Rosamond Faith, a teacher of medieval history at the Universities of London, Cambridge and Oxford and author of books and articles on the rural economy and the English landscape, has written the second half of the book. Here she shows the Anglo Saxons crops, livestock and farming practices that might have been combined into functional farming operations in a variety of rural environments. She uses a series of case studies to examine continuities and changes in arable husbandry; investigating farms in coastal and riverside areas, woodland, chalk downland, moorland and wolds. She examines the impact of the changes to strip farming, and the consequences of the development of open field farming.
Importantly, she suggests the notion of ‘abatement’. A period when the Romano British concentration on feeding essentially Empire dominated internal and export markets, gave way to a more balanced and self sufficient Anglo Saxon farming system. An economy geared to the needs of the Roman Empire became, by necessity, more introspective, and cereals gave way to livestock. She concludes that Anglo Saxon farming was highly adaptable to different soils, geology, and climate change. It was able to increase co-operation and scale during this period and re-organise into a sustainable agricultural system.
The book came about due to the authors’ frustration at being unable to recommend useful textbooks to their students on Anglo Saxon farming. This text goes a long way to addressing the need: providing a useful introduction to the existing scholarship on Anglo Saxon farming. As a textbook it may represent a challenge for general readers but it is a must for students and scholars of Anglo-Saxon agricultural history who believe in how the past informs the present and how the present alters our understanding of the past.
