Over 180 letters were found in a box in Hazel Anderson’s attic when, at age 95, her house was sold and she went to live in a rest home. They were written by her brother Raymond Howard Lee while he served in the army during World War II. Never one to write letters, Raymond faithfully wrote to his mother Mary and sister Hazel during those years. He was homesick for the small town life he left behind in Lawrence, Kansas. Also in the box were letters from a family who lived in a small village in England. For six months while Raymond waited with his battalion, the 91st Medical Gas Treatment Battalion, to follow the First Army into Normandy on D-Day + 17, a local family treated him as a son. The British mother and daugher began a correspondence with American's Mary and Hazel to share their concerns and what life was like during that time. The letters are transcribed, illustrated with photos from a companion album, and enhanced with family and wartime history.

A very special book

I don't mind confessing that I cried at various times while reading this book. A huge number of letters written by Raymond Howard Lee to his mother and sister - during WWII - were found in his sister's attic, when she was 95 and had to move out of her house. There were also letters from a British mother and daughter who befriended Raymond. Many of the letters are shown in the book, in addition to some photos and ephemera. Raymond's daughter published this book and it was obviously a real labor of love, including managing to track down the British grandson.
This book is a wonderful reminder about the innate goodness of some people and I can't recommend it highly enough.
