one big adventure
By mrs.g
Every now and then you have the privilege of knowing someone who has lived an exceptionally interesting life. As a veteran and a former park ranger at Yellowstone, Mr. Wilcox has been one of those characters in my life, having known him as my school teacher, bus driver, and even neighbor. Mr. Wil has been a well loved figure in our rural community and popular for his sense of humor and exciting tales. I can still see him sitting at the front of his classroom chuckling as he shared a story from his younger years. As students we would laugh as we imitated his well used phrase, "When I was in Vietnam..."

Sadly I forgot most of his stories over the years, so I was thrilled to hear he had written this book. One thing to note before reading this book is that he first wrote his life story with the intent of only sharing it with his posterity. It was never meant to be a novel and not formatted as such, but luckily for us his family convinced him to publish. Mr. Wil is candid in his narrative, but he is a skilled storyteller with an impressive memory of details. He has the ability to make you feel like you are hearing him speak face-to-face while also sending you back in time to witness his adventures firsthand. (Fair warning: In true Mr. Wilcox fashion, his language is unfiltered.)

The book is divided into three main sections: Marine Corps Years, Yellowstone Years, and Real Life. In the first section he details his childhood and shares how he came to be in the Marine Corps, and he dedicates a large portion of this section to his experiences serving in Vietnam. Despite having heard and read many war stories, I found Mr. Wil's recollection of the war more frightening and sad than I was expecting, perhaps because it was difficult to imagine how anyone could endure such things and still become the lighthearted man I have known him to be. Throughout his youth and his military years, Mr. Wil found himself in some intense situations, but he also landed himself in many humorous messes.

In the next section, Mr. Wilcox describes the decade of his life he spent working as a park ranger in Yellowstone. His vivid descriptions of the park made me feel like I had seen it all myself and yet left me wanting to visit. He has many adventures here that were just as scary as being back in the war, but he also has some incredible experiences with nature. He has more than one's fair share of encounters with bears, both funny and frightening. It's also within this section that he shares how he met his wife and eventually left Yellowstone.

In his final and shortest section, Mr. Wilcox describes how he came to be a father and eventually a teacher. I was disappointed to finish this section because I didn't want the stories to end. Although he spent 30 years of his life as a teacher, it seems he lived a lifetime before that even began.

Mr. Wilcox has certainly lived an adventurous life. His strong love for the outdoors manifested itself early in life and followed him throughout, despite the incredibly harsh conditions he found himself in on countless occasions. What he endured physically he also faced emotionally as a soldier and as a veteran of a controversial war. Mr. Wilcox's close encounters with the wildlife and danger in Yellowstone are plentiful, and he certainly can boast of befriending more than a few interesting characters throughout his life.

In short, Mr. Wilcox's story is not to be missed. Though the title of his book is "The Life and Adventures of Mr. Wil" it seems his life and adventures are one and the same.
