Did the author really know the truth about Bean?

Bean was a stanch supporter of "White Australia" and an anti-Semite. He did not recant, until 1958, his claim that General Monash, Australian-born son of Prussian-Jewish immigrants used "subterranean channels" to become corps commander. He did so only by scribbling it in the margin of his diary. I have watched interviews with the author. He repeatedly says Bean was in search of the truth. I did not hear mention of the purported journalist's conspiracy with Keith Murdoch to stop Monash's appointment to command the corps and then, failing that, to have him removed. . Bean thought no Jew, by definition, could possess good character and that it was a matter of national crisis and his duty to interfere. Bean flat out lied about Monash to the Australian government in order to have his man-crush, blond haired, blue eyed preferred candidate, General White, succeed to the position. If White admitted to Bean that he should have done more to stop what was going on at Gallipoli, then how could Bean, on nothing specific, accuse Monash of not being willing to stand up for the soldiers and how could he later say that Murdoch exaggerated the conditions at Gallipoli in the redo of the letter Murdoch smuggled out of for Ashmead-Bartlett. When Bean had the chance to tell the "truth" he "self-censored" when he no longer had to. Bean also downplayed his own role in the cabal.
I do not understand the willingness of historians and writers to overlook or downplay Bean's blatant antisemitism. His biographer, McCarthy couldn't even do a convincing job. Bean, like Chamberlain, was an appeaser of Hitler. Bean, Murdoch and White were every bit as ambitious(code for "pushy" Jew) as he criticized Monash for being. That trait, apparently, was acceptable if possessed by a non-Jew.
As an American, It is offensive to read, over and over, what a straight-arrow, truth seeking, patriot Bean was, as if what he did to Monash and being a white supremacist was a minor blip on the radar. If you look at his diaries and writings you will see it. When he converted his diaries into his version of history, he couldn't bring himself to take out all the remarks disparaging of Monash, so he added some gratuitous compliments to make his animus less obvious. The result is contradictory and unconvincing. Notwithstanding the value derived from his war experience, Bean's received history about Monash has never really been challenged in depth.The Imperial War Museum in London felt justified in excluding him(again) in its recent revamp. People who had praise for him are considered outliers by those in the know.
Monash was far from perfect, but more people than not had enormous respect for his accomplishments in the war. Over 250,000 people attended his 1931 funeral in Melbourne. The very traits so reviled by Bean were what made him effective as a leader.
It is no excuse that "genteel" antisemitism was common at that time, nor is the claim that Bean evolved. Monash battled a lot more than the Germans in his ascent to the command.

A very good source of information for anyone who wants to get ...

I read this book just before the ANZAC centenary and it was a very timely choice. It gave me a new respect for Bean and his incredible dedication to his task of reporting and honoring the deeds of the ANZAC soldiers in World War 1. I started the book a little biased against Bean as a result of his intrigues against Monash's appointment, but on the basis of this book I can see that he later reversed that position. A very good source of information for anyone who wants to get a very good account of the 'war to end all wars" and the role of the ANZACs.

A WONDERFUL STORY OF GALLANTRY

Ross Coulthart did a wonderful job of telling the story of Charles Bean's life. The finding of the episode of the Battle of "Mouquet Farm" was great as my cousin's father in law fought in that battle. I had previously read Charles Bean Gallipoli Illustrated (downloaded on Kindle) and also " Lost Legions of Fromelles" (from my local Library). Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book about Charles Bean, who was born not far from where I live.
