Mary King's 'Japan on Foot' is a worthy successor to Alan Booth's 'The Roads to Sata'

You might well think, 'This has been done before.' And it has. Alan Booth's 'The Roads to Sata' traced similar steps 30 years ago and for some is the benchmark, but 'Japan on Foot' is certainly equal to it. Mary King and her partner go one step beyond and end up in Okinawa (Booth stopped in Kyushu). There are similar tales of idiot country folk and beautiful, kind people the pair meet along the way. King even has showdowns with two bears. And there's also the minor subplot of the couple's 10-year relationship. But King weaves in some great background on Japan that makes this book required reading for anyone wanting to try and understand the country. A job well done.

Mary King writes with great detail, enthusiasm, and a clear passion for the project. And the adventures she had! This book is a great way to learn more about Japanese culture, independent travel, and the things humans are capable of.
