Patricia's world turned upside down when she was accidentally diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), an extremely rare cancer affecting only 1 in 5 million people. LMS is also a very aggressive type of tumor, thus nicknamed the Purple Dragon. After the initial shock of the diagnosis subsided, Patricia was ready to discover ways to heal herself and find hope. She went from being a counselor to thousands of patients on how to be proactive and take charge of their own health, to taking unknown paths in search of hope for surviving a disease that does not have a single established medical treatment. She embarked on a spiritual journey, which took her to Omega Institute, Bali and Brazil, where she met healers, a guru, a physician and other extraordinary people who became instrumental in her finding peace within and starting to believe that everything can be healed, even the Purple Dragon. Born in Brazil, Patricia moved to the United States at age 20. She has a Master of Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis, and has worked as a university professor, researcher, speaker, clinical dietitian and diabetes educator. She is also the proud mother of three children (including an angel in heaven) and the founder of Helping Children Heal (HCH), an NGO that provides medical treatment for impoverished and sick children who don't have health care. Patricia is a world traveler, having backpacked solo in Tibet, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Namibia, India and many other countries. Above all she is a proactive woman who has been inspiring many as she travels the paths of healing and discoveries, keeping alive the flame of faith that even the Purple Dragon can be tamed.

I did not want this book, or Patricia's story, to end. She writes so that her courageous and beautiful spirit come through the book straight to my heart. While I have never faced a cancer diagnosis, I have lived with a chronic disease for most of my life. I found Patricia's story truly inspirational, not only for the strength and courage she shows, but also for the vulnerabilities that she so compellingly shares. Her story helped me to recognize that it is OK to admit fear, loneliness, and the need for support sometimes. Yet her positive energy always soars above all else, and her story demonstrates her love of life and her determination to live a long one full of love. When I finished the book I felt like I had just spent time with a dear friend, and I hope that she writes another book so that I may continue sharing her story with her.

A sweet honest yet enlightening story about one woman's struggle with cancer

I put off reading this book for a few months because I was scared. Scared of the feelings it would bring up, scared of feeling sad as when I read I read for pleasure. I took this book on holiday with the plan to read it and I did. I read it in 24 hours, I couldn't put it down. I found Patricia's story enlightening. Her approach towards dealing with her illness is inspiring and interesting. For those fighting an illness, those supporting a ill person or anyone that is remotely interested in spirituality this is a must-read. She talks of her feelings in such an honest way and I love the way she touches on her interactions with others in a way that is truthful but kind. I liked the diary style that she uses, while talking a little if the past and future, like someone going back and narrating their diary. Thanks Patricia for having the courage to let us peek into your life in order to change ours for the better!

Moving personal account on dealing with cancer. Ms. Moreira-Cali's determination and ability to express the frustration, confusion, and humbleness that comes from confronting her condition gave me some perspective on the power of endurance that keeps us alive, against all the odds.
