... a neo-noir LA crime saga for fans of dramas like LA Confidential

DIRT to me is a neo-noir LA crime saga for fans of dramas like LA Confidential, The Departed, Max Payne, and a dash of Tarantino (think Reservoir Dogs). Usually when I start a new book it takes me awhile to accept the new authors voice and structure, if at all, but Todd Lincoln Richards had me hooked from the start. I found myself two chapters in before I realized that I hadn't experienced the internal struggle that comes with beginning the journey with a new author. I finished DIRT in two sessions, which is definitely a testament to the pacing, character development, and at times gruesome plot. My only negative comment is that it ended too abruptly which hopefully means that Todd has more in store for Dimitri. In hindsight, I think it was great storytelling that helped DIRT avoid the banality of many origin stories. In my opinion, Todd was successful in taking the familiar LA crime landscape combined with a hero teetering on the edge of corruption in fresh and exciting direction. A great read from Todd Lincoln Richards

A month after I read this, the story is still in my thoughts. And in my mind, that constitutes a great book. I'll keep my review short, but this book gets right to the root of what situations a deep undercover detective may face, how he might handle it, and how his job affects his personal life. Todd Lincoln Richards doesn't pull any punches when he writes about Dimitri's situation, about the constant battle to maintain his values while facing unwinnable situations. Dimitri is not the super cop type like other writers shoot for; he seems to be pretty vulnerable and human.
The mob guys have great character development too, and the reader gets to understand their mindset, and maybe why they came to be what they are. I can't wait to read more about this character as Todd develops him more in future novels.

I am a pretty critical reader. If it doesn't grab me quickly, I don't usually give it the benefit of the doubt.
I could not put this book down.
Todd Lincoln Richards pulls you, tentacle by slimy tentacle, into the world of undercover cop "Dimitri Cavanaugh." It's a gritty L.A. story, reminiscent of some of Elmore Leonard's works but kicked up a few notches.
If you've read any of Richards' other works, just know that the subject matter of DIRT is not typical for him. However, what it has in common with his other works is imagination and engaging dialog and situations.
A worthwhile read.
