The boat journey itself is shared by a good mix of tourists, backpackers, and locals who use the boat as a river taxi. That adds to the overall experience as you see regular life playing out as you go along on the journey.

The sailing part of the trip takes two day-times, with an overnight stay in Pak Beng. In the book I explain everything you need to know about accommodation, food for the trip, visa issues etc. At the end of the third day you arrive in the simply stunning and glorious Luang Prabang. I'll give you some tips about how to find somewhere to stay, how to beat the tourist crowds at the wonderful Kuang Si, and another couple of day trip ideas.

A refreshing take on magickal practice

I've been a member of various magickal orders... GD, Astrum Argentum, Arum Solis... I've attempted Franz Bardon's self initiation into Hermetics... as well as variations of Enochian and Solomonic work. All of the above are heavy physical techniques to inscribe, incant and such. You memorize correspondences, you work on specific days, and collect the right herbs and incense and colored candles... and they work. I've used various of Opening by Watchtower to evoke a being to physical manifestation - but all I gained from such physical manifestation was shock.

Spiritually I was a Buddhist, Hindu and more recently started studying the Tao Teh Ching.

For me the gain of wisdom, the growth of my spirit, the overcoming of life's problems ALL happened by less "technical" means. Of course that's my path and yours may differ. As I grew older, I began to withdraw from the physical practices of LBRP, BRH, etc. I stopped utilizing the so called "weapons of the art" and triangle of art. At one time I had an entire room dedicated to the workings of Enochian magick, including a table made in the fashion of John Dee's description... wax sigil dei ameth and so forth.... YET... the most I gained was in internal work. By internal work I refer to the mental space that is established between a person and a spiritual force or energy.

This book is on internal work. A lot of details are not mentioned. In other words, some people who may not have a background in magick might feel there isn't enough detail. The author in many areas provides a skeleton work for which the user must know how to plug in their own pieces to get things working.

The magick techniques here are not so much how to circumambulate, draw a symbol, sigil or memorize tables of correspondences... although the Grimoire is closer to that type of physical work (where you call to the directions with specific "words of power.") I don't feel drawn to that part of the work - but it's there if it calls to you. Much of the techniques of this work utilize imagination and breath work. It combines eastern and western techniques. When I read this, it inspired me. It told me that I was on a path that others have naturally been on as well... While my techniques may differ, I found they had some great ideas (like for banishing), so I adopted some of their techniques into my own practice. They are amazing.

As I grow older I feel less drawn to the Western practices and more geared to the Eastern. I like this as the first 90% of the book is more about the magicians will and use of imagination and breath to the work. The later 10% deals with weapons of art and such.

I think the authors would do better to create their own society or order and relay greater details in a systematic approach. The tables they use seem awkward at times and the data in the table cells is minimal.

**If you have a background in Magick and/or Eastern Mysticism it's no problem as you can fill in the gaps with experience. If you don't... well, you might feel lost I suppose. But this is targeting advanced users of magick and mysticism.**

Magnificent Volume Of Training And Tools For The Magus!

I have recently purchased “Ars Vercanus: Advanced Magickal Techniques” by Vasilios Wennergren. I am only a couple of chapters in, but I have found the book to be well written, intelligent and useful. I am a magician who started on my path via traditional witchcraft in 1983, and moved towards primarily magical practices over the years, much of it in the tradition of Franze Bardon mixed with some of the ideas from Max Freedom Long’s style of Huna.

In my opinion, Mr Wennergren’s book would be a welcome addition to the library of any magician, occultist or pagan who has learned some of the fundamentals of energy work and magic, and who has a certain level of discipline over their mind and emotions.

Sensory and intellectual pleasure

First, let me disclose that I know and admire the author, Alex Johnson, and have learned a great deal from her. But if I didn't really admire "Twice Eggs," I'd opt for silence. Instead, I'm writing this review because I really savored this excerpt from her memoir-in-progress. Set in a blazing, parched, impoverished region of Italy, the essay is a journey into personal and ancient history. The writing is luminous and at times, sharply funny, and Johnson's knowledge -- of ancient history, geology, and Italian cooking -- infuse every page. Though I'm not generally a fan of travel memoirs (and hate to classify "Twice Eggs" into any genre), I was enthralled and look forward to reading the rest of the book.

About the Author
As the youngest of four children, Brenda has probably heard—and, according to her, fulfilled—every "spoiled youngest child" joke out there! She is an avid fan of Notre Dame football, and though she finds all flowers inspirationally beautiful, yellow roses and every color of hydrangea are her flowers of choice. Another element that adds beauty to her days is music. Even though she no longer uses her degree in music education vocationally, she plays piano, flute, and mountain dulcimer, and she loves to sing! Brenda loves to express herself through her writing and to help others do so as well. She coauthored a women’s Bible study (with her mother, Lorraine), But God, and has completed writing and editing assignments for communications firms, businesses, websites, churches, schools, and colleges. Brenda Strohbehn's book, Petals from the Basket: Devotional Thoughts for Women, was just like sitting down with the author over a cup of tea, and having a meaningful discussion of how God has moved and worked in her life. It is very conversational. Easy read. I didn't want to put it down. She writes with a personal touch, where you feel like she is one of your closest friends.

We're going through Kris Vallatton's DVD series "Spirit Wars". I was doing today's reading and am just struck by his humility and openness. The leaders I admire the most are the ones that share their "real" struggles. People can connect to that more than a leader who preaches like they have it all together and we're all playing catch up.

Wow! Feeling blessed this morning! It has been so exciting talking in our group on Tuesday nights about how we are finding freedom from fear, hurts, wrong ways of viewing God, wrong ways of viewing ourselves, resisting the thoughts of the enemy, and living free in our identity!!

Definitely recommend this series to y'all!!

Great format for individual study or groups.

Kris does an excellent job of explaining the basics of spiritual warfare. This understanding is important for every Christian. He presents it in an easily understandable format. I read the book a year ago, but going through the video and study guide have really been beneficial. Sections are in small enough chunks to truly benefit from the content.

A tedious disappointment

A previous reviewer promises us that we won't be disappointed by this book. Actually, you will be very disappointed if what you are looking for in a mystery is dialogue that is not wooden; characters that are not lifeless caricatures; New Mexico settings that are not cliches of the "my discovery of New Mexico" school of blogging; and punctuation and sentence structure that are above the level of a fifth grader. This is a perfect example of the perils of self-publishing. Anyone interested in the genre of Santa Fe mysteries will find books by other authors, particularly Christine Barber and Walter Satterthwait, much more rewarding and revealing about the people, places and landscapes of northern New Mexico.

Santa Fe Solo

Santa Fe solo tells the story of Signe, a Danish Detective who transfers from Copenhagen to the police force in Santa Fe, New Mexico only to find herself in the middle of a murder investigation. The victim is a troubled, local woman with a shady past who is murdered during the State Fair. Adding to the mystery, the victim's valuable horse is also missing. Santa Fe Solo follows Signe's adventures as she pursues a host of leads trying to identify and capture the killer or killers. The writing is engaging and descriptive and will keep you tuned in right up until the unexpected conclusion. The descriptions of the New Mexico landscape and the local food and culture will make you want to book a trip to Santa Fe tomorrow! It's a pleasure to read a story about a strong, smart, sexy woman. Signe is a character both women and men will enjoy getting to know. So, whip up some chicken enchiladas, grab a glass of good wine and sit down with Santa Fe solo. You won't be disappointed!

About the Author
A fourth- or fifth-generation Texan (he can't really say for sure), Bartee Haile lives near Houston with his wife Gerri. He began writing This Week in Texas History in 1983 for small-town and suburban newspapers across Texas.

If Texas had a True-Crime Laureate it would be Bartee Haile. His anthology of historical Texas murder cases is written in lively journalistic style, yet no important detail is missed. The selection of stories was eerily personal for me, in terms of my familiarity with some of the events and places. As a young boy living in Jefferson, I was chilled by ghost tales of Diamond Bessie (Chapter 1) and terrified of the uncaught phantom slayer in nearby Texarkana (Chapter 10); as a teen, I partied to the jukebox at the Henderson Dairy Queen (Chapter 16); as a Dallas newspaper reporter, I covered one of the Billie Sol Estes trials (Chapter 13); and as an author, I researched and wrote a book on the unsolved murders of Hazel and Nancy Frome (Chapter 9). In each case, I can personally vouch for the expertise Bartee Haile brings to his colorful reporting. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Only in Texas

Bartee Haile has done it again! Fresh off the frisky crime book, Texas Desperadoes, Haile now offers up Murder Most Texan. With his punchy journalistic prose basted with colorful Texas colloquialisms, this series of true crime stories entertain and inform. While everything in Texas may be bigger, it turns out even murder is too and carried out with panache. Justice, Texas-style, often takes a backseat to big money and good lawyering. New facts from famous and not so famous murders appear in this enjoyable read.

The book is a fast read of sixteen both solved and unsolved mysteries. I hated it when I turned the final page although was left with a quirky sense that this stuff could only happen in Texas.

I have bought almost every book of Bartee Haile's and I read his weekly article from This Week in Texas History in our newspaper. This book is my all-time favorite of his! The stories were so fascinating that it was almost impossible to put down. I have now given copies of the book to a cousin and my son-in-law and have loaned my copy to a friend. Buy it now!
