Good, but confusing layout
By Phil Freihofner
This is a decent entry into the "Starting Out" series, with the typical strengths and weaknesses. Initial moves are very well explained, with good care going into the refutations of tricky but "bad" moves. Reading through this section has been helpful, especially for handling crazies playing online blitz chess. And it seems Emms does a good job of going into the main lines and explaining what is going on strategically, about what one has come to expect from this approach to chess books.

I had some difficulty finding certain lines. Each section starts with an overview discussion of the lines, followed by a discussion of how theoretical the line is and the current database statistics. Then come sample games and a closing "points to remember." However, the opening overview often seems to function more like additional sample game than an orienting summary. Thus, if you are in the middle of a sample game, the statistics precede. If you are in the "overview," they follow. But since it is hard to tell what is overview and what is sample game, it becomes a bit of a nuisance to locate these sections.

Also, it is not always clear if a line is discussed in the initial summary or one of the sample games. For example, Emms made the noteworthy suggestion of 5...Bc5 (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 ed 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 Bc5) as a reply to the Scotch Four Knights in "Play the Open Game as Black". In that book, White's two main replies, 6 Be3 and 6 Nxc6 are clearly given as lines "B1" and "B2."

In "Starting Out: The Scotch Game" the 6 Bd3 line is dealt with exclusively in the initial summary. Then there are two intervening sample games NOT involving 5..Bc5 (10 and 11) before the other main reply, 6 Nxc6 is discussed in game 12. The index wasn't helpful as it cited the summary (pg. 46) for the 6 Ncx6 line, rather than the sample game where this line is discussed in detail (pg. 55).

Side note: there's not much in terms of new info on these lines, compared to the first book, and Kaufman's suggestions and analysis tends to be ignored.

I play Kaufman's suggested line in the "Mieses" variation, and was looking forward to learning if it was holding up in Emms new book. Emms tersely cites the line (without mentioning Kaufman) on page 111 in a footnote, up to move 17, stating ONLY that this "again gives us the typical ending discussed in more detail in the next theoretical section." Thus, to find out more about this type of position, I had to search for the previous reference and the "next theoretical section" which turned out to be on pg. 126. From there I was referred to yet another location, Game 28.

The discussion there, once found, was somewhat helpful, but the position differed from Kaufman's, starting with Black's pieces being in slightly worse locations.

It seems Emms could have troubled himself to deal more explicitly with the Kaufman lines, since "Chess Advantage in Black and White" is having such a large impact.

My last quibble is that while there is much made of Kasparov's contribution to the Scotch, and there are references to his games interspersed, good luck actually trying to find them! There is only one game cited in the index, for a sideline. There is one sub-section titled "7...Be6 and Kasparov's 8 Na4," but the subsection titles are NOT included in the table of contents. There are scads of other references, such as his games with Short and Karpov in the text, but you'll have to hunt for them. Also, quite tellingly, we never hear why Kasparov STOPPED playing the Scotch. A truly objective book would have dealt with this issue.

Thus, while I am happy to own the book, I think Emms to a minor degree, and his publishers (and their poor editorial support) to a large degree are to be faulted.

The Scotch Bible
By A-player
I have to disagree with the 3 star reviewer from awhile ago - this is THE book to have if you want to play the scotch game (which isn't everybody). Like all books I own by John Emms (four now) it is excellently researched, well written and reads well besides (an appropriate amount of wit sprinkled in). I am rated 1800 and I find the book has more than enough detail on all possible lines arising from the Scotch, in fact I think this book would be appropriate through master level because it delves deeply at times into the theoretical lines. On the other hand, Emms does not get lost in a maze of variations without commentary as so many opening books do. I own six books from the 'Starting out' series, and I consider it to be the best amongst the, far better for example than Chris Ward's starting out:the nimzo-indian book which, while somehow being approximately the same page length, manages to convey about half the useful information. Starting out:the scotch game is a book I return to again and again to get new ideas and to understand where I go wrong in my games. The Everyman Chess format in this book is pleasant to the eye, and the quality of the analysis matches appearance. If you have any doubts, look at reviews for other John Emms books such as the easy guide to the nimzo-indian, his french tarrasch book, or the survival guide to rook endings. You will not be disappointed.

Good for 1...e5 players too.
By SJA
I don't play the Scotch as White, but as a 1...e5 player, I often run into it as Black. This is a great book for helping a 1...e5 player prepare against the Scotch - in particular, there is some good, solid insight into some of White's early move (6th, 7th, 8th...) deviations from the main lines.

It seems like most opening books are geared toward one side or the other (White or Black). This is not one of those books. As a non-Scotch player, I can't attest to the quality of the analysis for White (but this is Emms, so I would expect that it's top-shelf), but again, this is a good solid book for the Black side, and if you play 1...e5, this is stuff you need to know.

Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming (Medieval History and Archaeology), by Debby Banham, Rosamond Faith

Farming was the basis of the wealth that made England worth invading, twice, in the eleventh century, while trade and manufacturing were insignificant by modern standards. In Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming, the authors employ a wide range of evidence to investigate how Anglo-Saxon farmers produced the food and other agricultural products that sustained English economy, society, and culture before the Norman Conquest.

The first part of the volume draws on written and pictorial sources, archaeology, place-names, and the history of the English language to discover what crops and livestock people raised, and what tools and techniques were used to produce them. In part two, using a series of landscape studies - place-names, maps, and the landscape itself, the authors explore how these techniques might have been combined into working agricultural regimes in different parts of the country. A picture emerges of an agriculture that changed from an essentially prehistoric state in the sub-Roman period to what was recognisably the beginning of a tradition that only ended with the Second World War. Anglo-Saxon farming was not only sustainable, but infinitely adaptable to different soils and geology, and to a climate changing as unpredictably as it is today.

Review
readers new to this subject area will especially appreciate the clear and fluently written prose that in less accomplished hands could easily have been encumbered by dense description and technical jargon ... the authors should be congratulated for a highly successful scholarly collaboration that has yielded what will no doubt come to be regarded as an essential text on Anglo-Saxon farming for many years to come. Gabor Thomas, Antiquity worthwhile, and will guide researchers to useful sources. Christopher Dyer, English Historical Review The authors must be congratulated on a book which will be useful to a wide range of scholars. They assimilate and present material from a variety of disciplines and pack an enormous amount of detail into its pages, yet it is uniformly interesting and enlightening ... this is a fine work, well written and illustrated, and likely to remain the standard textbook for a long time - for both those who know about Anglo-Saxon England and those who know about farming. Paul Cavill, Medieval Settlement Research

About the Author

Debby Banham is a medieval historian who teaches in the Universities of Cambridge and London. During the 1970s she worked as an agricultural labourer, and when she arrived in Cambridge as a mature student, discovered that farming was the only thing she knew more about than the people who taught her. She has published Monasterialies indicia: the Old English monastic sign language, and Food and Drink in Anglo-Saxon England, as well as articles on Anglo-Saxon farming, diet and medicine, and monastic sign language.

Rosamond Faith has taught medieval history at the universities of London, Cambridge, and Oxford, and is the author of The English Peasantry and the Growth of Lordship and many articles on English and French peasants, the rural economy, and the English landscape.

Transforming English Agriculture
By Keith E Crook
Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming, Debby Banham and Rosamond Faith. Oxford University Press ISBN 978-019-920794-7

Did you know that the Anglo Saxons failed to domesticate the wild duck? Or that they were the first to introduce Rye and Oats into England? These and many other fascinating facts can be found in Debby Banham and Rosamond Faith’s authoritative work, Anglo-Saxon Farms and Farming. The writers make extensive use of primary written sources, pictorial and archaeological evidence, place names and linguistic evidence to discover what crops and livestock Anglo Saxons raised, and what tools and techniques were used to produce them. They include a very thorough bibliography and short glossary which is useful for those who want to pursue their interests in these matters further.

Debby Banham is a medieval historian who teaches at the Universities of Cambridge and London and has written articles and books on Anglo Saxon farming diet and medicine, she has written the first half of the book where she examines the types of crops produced and the tools and techniques used to produce them. She examines animal husbandry and in particular the role of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. She concludes with the assertion that, in terms of species ‘Anglo Saxon livestock consisted of the same animals we are used to seeing today, apart from ducks’. (p 105)

Rosamond Faith, a teacher of medieval history at the Universities of London, Cambridge and Oxford and author of books and articles on the rural economy and the English landscape, has written the second half of the book. Here she shows the Anglo Saxons crops, livestock and farming practices that might have been combined into functional farming operations in a variety of rural environments. She uses a series of case studies to examine continuities and changes in arable husbandry; investigating farms in coastal and riverside areas, woodland, chalk downland, moorland and wolds. She examines the impact of the changes to strip farming, and the consequences of the development of open field farming.

Importantly, she suggests the notion of ‘abatement’. A period when the Romano British concentration on feeding essentially Empire dominated internal and export markets, gave way to a more balanced and self sufficient Anglo Saxon farming system. An economy geared to the needs of the Roman Empire became, by necessity, more introspective, and cereals gave way to livestock. She concludes that Anglo Saxon farming was highly adaptable to different soils, geology, and climate change. It was able to increase co-operation and scale during this period and re-organise into a sustainable agricultural system.

The book came about due to the authors’ frustration at being unable to recommend useful textbooks to their students on Anglo Saxon farming. This text goes a long way to addressing the need: providing a useful introduction to the existing scholarship on Anglo Saxon farming. As a textbook it may represent a challenge for general readers but it is a must for students and scholars of Anglo-Saxon agricultural history who believe in how the past informs the present and how the present alters our understanding of the past.

Starting Out: The Modern, by Nigel Davies

The Modern Defence is a dynamic, ambitious and universal opening, one that can be used against virtually every system White can play. Black's provocative strategy is based upon allowing White to construct an imposing pawn centre in the anticipation that a well-timed strike will bring about its downfall. Both sides can play for high rewards, albeit at some risk: White can hope to succeed with a direct attack or to squash Black with a space advantage, while Black will aim to destroy White's centre and mop up the remains. All in all this can lead to intriguing battles in which one slip from either side is often fatal. In this book, Nigel Davies studies the Modern by going back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them - something that has often been neglected or taken for granted.

Everyman Chess's Starting Out series has firmly established itself as the leading guide to studying openings for up-and-coming players. These books are distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, the lucid explanations of the fundamentals, and the abundance of notes, tips and warnings to help the reader absorb vital ideas. Starting Out opening books are ideal for enthusiastic chess players who have little experience of the openings in question and who wish to appreciate the essential principles behind them.

An Interesting Book but with the Wrong Title
By Carl Armstrong
I have most of the Starting Out Series and they are usually excellent.I also have several books by Nigel Davies which are quite good. This current one however should be titled Starting Out: Hippopotamus Transpositions since the title Modern Defence is very misleading in that Davies only examines lines where black plays the customary 1...g6 2...Bg7 3...d6 and now 4...a6 no matter what white has played leading primarily to Hippopotamus transpositions, where black fianchettoes both Bishops and brings his Knights to e7 and d7.

Nowhere will you find traces of the excellent coverage given in "Starting Out: the Pirc-Modern" by GM Joe Gallagher where he gives all of whites main lines as well as blacks. That is the book to get if you want the very latest trends and ideas for both sides. (he gives a few Hippopotamus transpositions, but not as a cure all for every situation) Also the excellent "Dangerous Weapons: the Pirc Modern" by Palliser, McNab and Vigus with some dynamic and original ideas for both white and black. This new book by Davies is strictly limited to blacks point of view only after the moves 1..g6, 2..Bg7, 3..d6,and 4..a6 as a cure all for everything white does.

I have been playing the Modern Defence for many years and the greatest book ever written on it is by GM Ray Keene & G.S.Botterell, a hardcover book that came out in 1972.Also the one by Jon Speelman & Neil McDonald is very good (Everyman Chess series 2000) and an excellent one by David Norwood entitled: "Winning with the Modern" (Batsford 1994).But this new one by Nigel Davies is very limited and narrow minded, unless you are a real advocate of the Hippopotamus Defence, which is interesting and tough to crack.

Be flexible-and be Modern!
By Marty Marion
If you like to play defense in chess or you are a counter attacker, this is an opening you may want to add to your repertoire. Although it can be played against both e4 and d4, where it shines is against e4. Basically, you are inviting the player of the white pieces to over extend him(or her)self in the center so that you can pick it apart.

This is in line with the hypermodern philosophy that looks at the center as a target. Players of the Sicilian Dragon will feel comfortable with this opening as your black bishop(the dragon) is most important-unless white forces you to exchange it for his black bishop.

You also must feel comfortable with not castling when the situation calls for it(if you like to play with your king in closed positions, this is the opening for you!); classical players will more than likely not invest the time it takes to learn this defense. Players who like to get their opponents out of book and have the stomach for allowing 'white' to think he has the initiative will love the razor's edge of this opening.

This book takes a beginning(and totally different look than Tiger Hillarp Person's) and builds upon the Speelman/McDonald book of this defense. You get the main ideas, plans, and favorite squares for your pieces. As the Modern is played in r3esponse to what your opponent plays, learning the plans and pawn breaks are most important. Plus, cementing a Knight on f5 always helps too!

I am gaining a few pointers as to what I should not allow white to do before he/she even knows what they should be doing. Knowledge of the KID will help as there are opportunities to transpose when your opponent plays a by the book d4.(then again,if you play the KID, playing the Modern might not appeal to you.)

Those who are determined to go their own way will love this defense-and book. Start here then move on to the books by the above mentioned authors. In fact, I would get the Speelman/McDonald book first, then this, and finally the one by Tiger. With the knowledge gained therein, you would be well versed. I am a 1700 rated USCF player and was able to beat a 2000+ rated player with this defense in an open tournament;mind you-this was after playing many blitz games, much study, and taking some losses with it before I really got a hang of it.

Take the time to learn the traps, sacrifices(B x g6 pawn), and attacks white can throw at you when you play this. If you do, you can play it against anyone-outside of Carlsen, Kasparov, and others of that ilk.

Great alternative to standard defenses of 1. e4, d4, f4!
By Jerome Lewis
Starting out: The Modern Defense is a very dynamic, unorthodox opening for Black against 1. e4, d4 or f4. White is allowed to monopolize the center for a time while Black can prepare for its eventual destruction. Nigel Davies gives different opening move orders and alternatives for Black against the Austrian attack, Bg5 systems, c2-c3 systems, g2-g3 systems and other flank openings White can muster, each time Black can maintain some equality or launch a counter offensive. The main course of this defense is causing White to lose focus of the center by controlling the king/queenside or both at the same time. This defense is not fool proof and not for the faint hearted either. Black must be able to feign and seize the opportunities as they are created or suffer crushing suffocation or material loss. This is a great defense for the tournament/club player. The author gives plenty of current game analyses of high level play to wet the appetite of the new study and maintain the interest of players already familiar with this defense, without great memorization of key concepts. This defense is easy to learn and use....Why don't you give the Modern Defense a try?

St. Louis, Leningrad, Santa Fe, Paris-no matter where these stories take us, we return to the inward experience of doubt, faith, love and unforeseen renewal. In the title story, we encounter a theater company struggling to come to terms with corruption on both sides of the Stage Door. "Blind" features a cello maker who discovers he is jealous of his wife's close friendship with her gay male hair stylist. In "We'll Meet Again," the conflict between a sister and brother comes to a head at their father's funeral. "La Casita" concerns a middle-aged painter who fears the loss of his patron who has a new boyfriend. "In This Economy" shows us another painter who drifts aimlessly around the world with his rich lover instead of painting. These characters confront crises-both spiritual and moral-at every turn. And find hope by staying fully engaged.

Fans of Elizabeth Strout will love Alfred DePew
By Rosalinde Block
Alfred DePew has delivered an elegant collection of stories. The fine-tuned descriptiveness in his writing is thorough, yet simple-- subtle with nuance in one thought and smacking you in the face in the next. He writes with a vividity that I can see and feel and taste and hear and smell. His characters are brilliant-- expressive through the stumbling conversation of life. Fans of Elizabeth Strout will love this book. Bravo!

Nocturne for a Widow (Sybil Ingram Victorian Mysteries Book 1), by Amanda DeWees

"DeWees offers up a win for gothic romance . . . sizzles with chemistry sure to please readers." --Library Journal

The ghost may be the least of her problems... Vivacious actress Sybil Ingram looks forward to a life of security when she leaves the theater to marry a wealthy American. But when he dies on their wedding night, she finds herself a penniless widow. Her only legacy is Brooke House, a Gothic revival manor in the wilds of the Hudson River Valley. However, the eerie mansion comes with two tenants. One is a hostile ghost. The second, and far worse, is former violinist Roderick Brooke--the most insolent, dangerous, maddeningly gorgeous man she's ever met.

As Sybil and Roderick engage in a battle of wills--and wits--she finds herself increasingly drawn to him despite her growing suspicion that there is a connection between him and the spirit that haunts Brooke House. But soon an even greater threat arises: the mysterious queen of local society, Mrs. Lavinia Dove. For reasons that Sybil can't imagine, Mrs. Dove is determined to have Brooke House and Roderick for herself... if necessary, by deadly means.

Mysterious and moving, sparkling and spooky, Nocturne for a Widow is a brilliant fusion of romantic comedy and gothic romance. Readers who love historical romantic suspense will also want to explore DeWees's other gothics, With This Curse (2015 Daphne du Maurier Award winner) and Sea of Secrets (2012 RONE Award winner).

Review
"[DeWees brings] delicious humor to the forefront, creating characters and a plot that balance classic Gothic suspense and lighthearted humor so deftly that she nearly creates an entirely new genre -- the cozy Gothic romance." --Sweet Rocket  "The sexual tension between Sybil and Roderick is absolutely delicious and keeps building to a crescendo at the end. ... Nocturne for a Widow is a delightful tale that anyone with a sense of humor will enjoy." --InD'Tale magazine, crowned heart review  "Sybil Ingram, the heroine, is vastly engaging, unique, and funny throughout the story. ... The two main characters are witty, sharp-tongued, and intricately likable. ...Ms. DeWees captured a believable, seamless, and absolutely convincing progression of romance between the hero and the heroine." --Caitlyn Mitchell, Maudlin's Shoes

From the Author
Readers who enjoyed meeting Sybil in With This Curse will love this opportunity to spend more time with this spirited, confident actress as she leaves the theater behind for an exciting and dangerous new life in America. In Nocturne for a Widow you'll learn the real reason she cast aside her life as a stage goddess and left behind everything she knew... and of the wildly unexpected turns her life took after that momentous decision.

About the Author
Amanda DeWees is an author and editor based in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her PhD in English literature from the University of Georgia and likes to startle people by telling them that her dissertation topic was 19th-century vampire literature. Besides writing, her passions include movies, costume design, ghost stories, and sparkly things in general. She loves the Victorian era and concocting stories set in that time period . . . partly for the dresses, she must admit. Visit her at amandadewees.com to learn more about her books and explore delightful extras.

and my favorite so far
By Eclectic Reader
Nocturne for a Widow is Amanda DeWees's latest gothic romance, and my favorite so far. The heroine, a celebrated British actress and aging (at the age of 28) ingenue, decides to "retire" from the theater by accepting an offer of marriage from one of her many admirers, an older American hotelier. She severs all ties with her troupe, sells her belongings, and arrives in New York only to find her intended on his deathbed, his business ruined. She marries him anyway and is widowed within hours. With few options and with no money to inherit, she sets off on a journey to his home in upstate NY, on which she can lay some slender claim. There she finds herself "stepmother" to a tempestuous and extremely attractive man (think Rufus Sewell at his broody best), who claims the house as his own. As they are forced to share the spooky, haunted house until a judge can decide its disposition, they fall in love. The spirit that lives there has definite ideas as to the outcome of the real estate wrangle and the romance, plus a need to have her murder solved! The heroine is delightful, funny, and determined. The hero is to die for. The writing is splendid, especially the snappy dialog, the suspense, and the characterizations. The author includes some interesting details about the theater and costuming that give the story a feeling of authenticity. This book is another winner.

Good Gothic companion to WITH THIS CURSE.
By OLT
If you read DeWees' With This Curse, you'll want to read this one too. WTC is about Clara Croft, seamstress who designed and sewed clothing for a famous English theater actress but was forced to leave her job, ended up married to the brother of her first love and living in a dark, gloomy, possibly haunted mansion.

This new book is about that actress, Sybil Ingram, and occurs at the same time as Clara's story (1854, I believe) but, of course, in a different place and both books are independent of each other. In this one the actress finds it necessary to give up her career and moves to America to marry an older, rich hotel magnate who became attracted to her when she and her acting troupe were on an American tour. She makes it across the ocean just in time to marry but is soon widowed. And to top it off, her husband had had such financial reversals that he died in debt.

No one, and, in particular, her deceased husband's lawyer and financial advisor, is helpful. She is strongly encouraged to go back where she came from, but poor Sybil has burned all her bridges in England and, in addition, is without any funds. She insists that a vague clause in her husband's will leaves her in possession of Brooke House, a large mansion outside New York City and goes there, having no other alternatives.

Well, of course it's not welcoming, seems haunted, and she meets uncooperative people, the worst of whom is her deceased husband's stepson. He's dark and brooding, of course, and has some tragedy in his past. So on we go with the Gothic story.

DeWees writes well, is obviously well read and has lots of literary quotes in her book and a good command of the language. Yes, I know that all authors should have a good command of the language but it's not all that common nowadays, especially since the advent of e-books, allowing everyone with an inflated image of his/her writing talent to put out a book. DeWees really does know how to write and I enjoyed the reading of this book.

I did not feel like giving it a 5-star rating, however, because the story was a bit tame for a Gothic. No scares, the haunting entity didn't feel evil (for a reason, of course) and most everything moved along very predictably and with no suspense to speak of. The evil character of the plot was indeed evil but even that person didn't give me a good scare at any moment. The only thing that I couldn't predict was exactly how the evil character was going to be eliminated.

My new auto-buy author!
By Volatilisanguis
Amanda DeWees is a gothic romance gem. In many ways -- the suspense, the humor, and the light, sweet romance -- DeWees reminds me of classic Mary Stewart and Barbara Michaels that just isn't written anymore. The writing is elegant but doesn't detract from the atmosphere and characters it builds, who (aside from the totally evil single-minded villain in classical Gothic fashion) are very believable and multi-faceted.

In Nocturne, DeWees spins a tale of a desperate English actress firmly "on the shelf" at age of 28 and no longer able to play the ingenue. Yet, she is still naive in many ways and falls prey to those seeking to exploit her sweet nature. After an unfortunate series of events, she ends up in the picturesque Hudson River Valley in an old house with a dark secret. There's a pleasant cast of small-town characters, including a likable vicar and his spinster sister, to lighten the mood. DeWees employed more humor in this story -- the witty repartee lobbed between the hero and heroine -- than in her other books, and it's a nice edition that I hope she continues to weave through future stories. A must-read if you enjoy light romances (no sex) with mystery and superstitious elements.

Review
"This crisp retelling of Christian history from the days of the apostles to the eve of the Reformation is filled with insight. Gonzalez excels in the brief character sketch. With economy of expression he is still able to define the significance and enliven the character of many great figures in the church's first 1500 years. An additional strength is the careful treatment of Christian expansion into Central and South America during the early modern era. This is a good book for introductory courses, for personal reading, and for adult education in the church."--Mark A. Noll, associate professor, Wheaton College

A fine survey of Church History
By David Bennett
Gonzalez's book here is perhaps the best survey of church history available. His book is concise and scholarly. He rarely goes off on unnecessary tangents, and he always presents the material clearly. This is why I would recommend this book for anybody who wants a non-threatening and enjoyable introduction to church history. He covers many important figures, such as Ignatius of Antioch, John Chrysostom, and Athanasius. All of the major players are there. He also gives his readers insights into important church events, such as the council of Nicaea. The book is filled with charts and timelines of popes, emperors, etc. This book was very helpful in a church history class I took recently. It was not the main textbook, but it helped me put the theology I was learning into historical context.
Gonzalez, as another reviewer mentioned, is Protestant. From what I have read he does not have an anti-Catholic bias, but he does cover the materials in a more Protestant way. One example is his lack of coverage of Pseudo-Dionysus. However, this book is only an introduction, and does not claim to be the end all guide to every figure in church history.
Overall, Gonzalez has written a fine work that is now a standard textbook in many Catholic and Protestant Seminaries and Universities. I particularly enjoyed his chapter on "Eastern Christianity." You don't have to be a scholar to get into church history. I think Gonzalez will get you interested if you read his book.

Impressive
By Will Riddle
I have a stack of church history books in my personal library, and many others that cover this period, not to mention having studied this material in seminary. Gonzalez' work is undoubtedly the best of those. He has a remarkable gift: He is able to bring insights about the underlying processes at work in church history without actually needing to focus on them. He is able to discuss all of the major figures and movements of church history without making it seem laborious. He displays his depth by often bringing in details that are outside of the common narrative, but which supplement our understanding of the era, how and why the church develops -- not just names and place. I can think of few other writers with this talent. It's as easy to read as Church History in Plain Language, 3rd Edition but with rich insights like A History of Christianity, Volume 1: Beginnings to 1500 (Revised)

What this has meant for me is a deeper insight into church history while at the same time having a fun read. As for his perspective, Gonzalez is very even handed in volume I, however in volume II his bias as a liberal-leaning but believing protestant really comes through. He has an animus against anglo-protestant evangelicals and he writes that into his history. Which if you share that bias, it may be the perfect book for you. Regardless, volume I is fabulous no matter what perspective you are coming from and I highly recommend it!

History Comes Alive
By mj
In THE STORY OF CHRISTIANITY, divided into two volumes, Justo Gonzales does a fantastic job of bringing the history of the church alive. His writing style is engaging and the text tends to read more like a novel at times than a typical textbook. And for me that is what this was: a textbook for a Church History class. But by the end of the semester I found myself reading more for pleasure than class requirements.
Gonzales focuses on the high points for the most part because these books are surveys. In particular, there is a greater focus on men like Constantine, Augustine, Luther, and Calvin. He is fair in his research and opinions, and no matter what background you come from you'll find that he presents the facts in an honest and unbiased (as possible) fashion. Coming from an evangelical background I learned much about the roots of that movement and was also very pleased to find a wealth of information on the eastern churches, liberal protestantism, scholasticism, etc. The development of the church in early Latin America, Africa, and Asia is also given attention. Gonzales covers all of the bases.
THE STORY OF CHRISTIANITY is a fine resource for those who wish to gain a firm understanding of the history of the Christian church or for anyone who desires to have a quality resource on the subject available to them. For student, layperson, or teacher, this is an excellent buy. Five Stars.
