Revelation: Explanatory Notes & Commentary, by John Wesley

The Notes Upon The New Testament is considered to be one of John Wesley's principal works, and its readability, influence and popularity has remained since the time of its publication until today.

First printed in 1755 by William Bowyer, John Wesley's Notes Upon The New Testament were entirely his own work, written during a period of illness which forced him to abandon his usual routine of travel and preaching. He would write from 5 am - 9 pm every day, unless he was riding, eating, or taking his personal devotion time (5 - 6 pm each evening). Charles Wesley assisted in some ways, including his translations of the gospels and in other unspecified ways. Wesley cites his influences for the New Testament Notes as the Gnomon Novi Testamenti of Bengel, the Paraphrase of Dr Guyse, the Theological Lectures of Dr Heylin and the Family Expositor of Dr Doddridge. The fourth and fifth editions of the Notes contained corrections by John & Charles Wesley and others.

One of The Great Pioneers of Later Protestants. Read Also "The Great Controversy" By E.G. White
By K7GDM
If you want to understand the book of Revelation you MUST first read the Old Testament book of Daniel. It is imperative to read Daniel because he was given visions and dreams that were explained by Jesus Himself and the angel Gabriel. Chapter 2 reveals the empires to come and points toward the Revelation of Jesus Christ. By the way, Antiochus Epiphanes was not the power spoken of in Daniel chapter 9. Modern Bible scholars fail to realize that he was on the scene for only 12 years and was far, far, too early to have any part in the "abomination of desolation" spoken of in chapter 9. Look back to chapter 2 and note when the "Rock cut out without hands" hits the metal man: at the toes of the feet which means beyond the legs of iron—pagan Rome—and past the European Union with Papal Rome. This is Christ's second coming.

If you want an excellent and accurate read on history and the events to come read The Great Controversy by Ellen G. White. But, have your Bible nearby!

Excellent.
It is hard to read Revelations on your own and understand it. You can do it and get somethings out of it, but not enough.
It says that the reader is blessed by reading it, but you don't feel that way without this commentary and notes. With them, it is truly enlightening and changes your thinking and understanding. It is Christian education at its best.

Taking a worthless Bible class on Revelations led by dimwits and speculators is an awful experience. Lots of crazy talk on Revelations. This is different. You are on your way to being a mature Christian by reading this.

It is amazing how badly taught many of us are and what a dismal job our Christian leaders do regarding our understanding of true Christian doctrine. They are to blame for the rise in cults and the lack of understanding of what the Bible is all about. Read Revelations and see the warning they are given. More should be expected of them and is.

With John Wesley you can educate yourself. Then you can educate your children which is what the family is expected to do. Don't leave it to others.

Another goodt story by Gracie that emphasizes the "character" in her main characters. Willow portrays the value of using one's God given free will to make good choices that lead to good things in not just her life, but also those near and dear to her. Wonderfully inspiring!

Saving Poughkeepsie (The Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series Book 3), by Debra Anastasia

Beckett Taylor's quest to be a better man has brought Eve Hartt back into his
life, but sometimes it feels like they're bound together with barbed
wire. Though he longs to love her without causing pain, the wreckage of
their past continues to crash down around them.

Yet with the help of this brothers--and for his brothers--Beckett won't stop trying.
He's determined to make them all a family, to make a life they want to
live, and to make Poughkeepsie a place that's safe to live it.

He can feel their futures balanced precariously on his shoulders: Blake
and Livia and their children, Cole and Kyle and the new baby they've
just brought home, and Eve...always Eve. He wants their dreams to be real.
But murderers don't just get Happily Ever After handed to them. They
have to wrench it away from Satan himself. Good thing Beckett is prepared to do just that.
After all, saving Poughkeepsie is the only way his story ends.

Prepare your heart and your head for a wild ride in this final installment of
the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. Debra Anastasia does not disappoint
as she weaves the last chapter of a story that blends true love,
turbulent emotions, and life's harsh realities into an uplifting tale
that calls to the good in each of us.

Oh the many, many feels!
By Iza TheDirtyBookGirl
"Our goal is this and only this: Saving Poughkeepsie."

Man, oh, man!

I'm still reeling from all the things that happened, that went down in this book. Ms Anastasia needs to give me a lot of hugs - she even offered her bosom to me - because I'm left empty. Drained up. I got teary-eyed, I laughed and melted. Not to mention, chewed on my nails because there were quite some angsty scenes.

So, Beckett and Eve are happy together but it can easily be taken away from them because Rodolfo Vitullo, the man whose daughter Eve killed in Return to Poughkeepsie, wants Eve for a very sick plan of his. Of course he doesn't succeed because Eve is just that bad*ss, but nobody knows the old bastard finds another way to getting what he wants. And he comes this close to succeeding in that one.

Poughkeepsie becomes safe again, slowly but surely. It becomes a safe haven for misfits, just like in Maryland - Beckett realized ruling with an iron fist and putting the fear into people wasn't the way to go, so he tried with loyalty.

There's a peaceful period, after some things that went down - I either teared-up because of the aw-moments or because of the sad ones, but nonetheless, tear up, I did - and then everything blows up.

I can't even explain all of this, without giving something away. Every detail is important, everything they do. Beckett, once again, places everyone else above himself. That man is something unbelievable and he's a thousand kinds of amazing! I'll only say this, that bastard has a romantic side that turned me to mush. He evolved and changed so much, throughout the series. All of them did, but I think this change is most noticeable at him because he rose from the drug lord and pimp ruler, to the pseudo-saint that wants what's best for his family and his people. Just you read and see for yourself.

I knew reading this book would be bittersweet. I knew it. I was also lucky enough to read an early copy of it, for which I will be forever grateful! This series is different, it combines so many things, friendship, family, deep bonds that do not need blood to be created and kept. It's just wow and awesome.

"You like it when I'm all fired up and jealous?"
"It's so f***ing sexy I can't take it."
"Maybe I need to remind you who you belong to."
"Please."

5 +++ stars. I'll be rereading this series many times because I'll miss these characters. I may not have met them, back when the very first book was published, I may be a recent fan, but I do know that I fell and I fell hard. There's no going back now.

P.S. It may be the end of an era, but it's the beginning of a new one.

P.P.S. My dream came true, in the epilogue. Technically, before that. Read it and maybe you'll figure it out.

"I put you."
"Me?"
"Yeah. You."
"Me."

~~ 5 Brotherhood Stars ~~
By Jennifer H.
Hold on to your hats….this book was quite the adventure. Let me start by saying that Debra Anastasia knows how to write a book/series that keeps you wanted more of these characters. Saving Poughkeepsie is book 3 in her Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series and I have to say I loved each one of them equally. This is an AMAZING series. What I loved about this book and the others was that we got so much more than just one story. This was more of three stories in one. Debra's writing is flawless and engaging. This book sucked me in as soon as I started it and didn't let go until it was done. Saving Poughkeepsie was a continuation of Beckett and Eve's story but we still got to see Blake and Livia and Kyle and Cole's story play out. These three brother's lives are so entwined that you can't really tell the story without telling all their stories.

I loved the direction that she took with this story. I can honestly say I didn't see it coming and I haven't read anything like this before. I won't be telling any secrets about the storyline, just know it will keep you turning the page. I am also glad to say that my love for Beckett is still just as strong as it was in the first two books. Beckett was just as raw and gritty in this book as before, but I was glad to say that we also got to see another side of him that made me love him even more ;) I also enjoyed watching Eve and Beckett grow stronger in this book. They truly are each other soul mates.

As I said before we also got to follow the journey of Blake, Livia, Kyle and Cole in all three of these books. I was so glad that we got to continue on with their stories as well, sometimes in series we lose previous characters or are only given small glimpses into their futures. That is not the case with this series. There is NO way to tell one story without telling the others.

I know that this review is pretty repetitive and vague, but I truly believe that this is the type of series you need to go into blind. I would definitely recommend every one of these books. If you are looking for an interesting storyline with amazing characters and is nothing like you've read before….Then pick up this series….You won't be sorry :)

A gorgeous series conclusion! (Non-spoiler review)
By Grace MyBookSnack
After reading book 2, I wondered how the hell Debra Anastasia was going to conclude the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. One couple in particular seemed to have so much stacked against them. Well, this series concludes in an epic way…EPIC I tell you!

The themes of brotherhood, friendship, and family continue to be ever present in Saving Poughkeepsie. I think this is one of the reasons why this series has a huge fan base. People relate to and care for these characters in some way. In the midst of all the pain and tragedy, they just want to know if everything will be ok.

In this installment, evil is wrecking havoc all over. Boy, does this person have HUGE, unbelievable plans! For each couple, Ms. Anastasia has lovingly crafted special moments that made me swoon to the stars! So much love and devotion is expressed for Blake and Livia. Although hinted in the summary, Cole and Kyle get to experience happiness tenfold, but there’s so much more that goes down you’ll have to read it to find out what happens. Finally, there is Beckett and Eve. I was weary on how things would conclude for these two, but it was pulled off in such a way that only Debra Anastasia can write it! Beckett is such a bad boy (who is trying to be good) and Eve’s biggest dream seemed so impossible to achieve. Ms. Anastasia gave them a roller-coaster journey throughout the entire series, and more so in this book. What a wild and twisted plot filled with humor, love, and suspense!

The Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series is best appreciated when read in order. Saving Poughkeepsie is a MUST READ for fans. You will love it!!!

Although I’m sad that the series has concluded, these characters will live on strong in my heart. Thank you, Debra Anastasia, for telling this gorgeous story and taking me on quite the journey to Poughkeepsie!

These crafts are really great. You have to get this book!
By Sherry Everett
Would you like to get the entire family involved during this Christmas season? This book is a great way to do it. Since my two grown daughters work outside the home, I'm going to supervise as three of my grandchildren make most if not all these crafts projects. I can't wait to start since I'm just a kid at heart. Take a look inside the book and see all the crafts listed here. Barb Asselin must have a lot of children or else she's a kid at heart too.

Great book!
By Lysanne P.
Another great book from Barb Asselin on Christmas crafts. This one has lots of creative craft ideas to make by yourself or with the kids. I plan on making the mug O'gingerbread man. They look amazing and easy enough to make. It will be great gift this Christmas. I will also try to make my own gingerbread house this year and have the kids decorate it. I usually buy an already made one but the recipe presented in the book looks easy enough for me to try. I really like the way the author describes the crafts. The instructions are well written, clear and easy to follow. Great book to own to make your own Christmas crafts.

All the Guidance you Need
By Carol Kay
I am a craft fanatic and jumped on this book for new ideas. I think making your own gifts is a fine tradition and a great family pastime, so I say a resounding yes. The book gives you all the guidance you need to do anything from a cool gingerbread house to a wooden snowman. The angel ornament will tempt the girls and dad will love the apple cider. There are the usual Christmas stockings, but also a cute "sucker tree" and nice pinecone wreath. You can't every go wrong with cookies.

The Definitive Edition
By The Peripatetic Reader
The Gospel of Thomas had always been known, excerpts from which appeared in the early centuries of the Common Era. It was known enough for Bishop Eusibius, most famous for his history of early Christianity, to declare the contents as a heresy.

This edition of the Gospel of Thomas dispels Eusibius’ opinion.

The contents of this book are arraigned in three columns. In the first column is a translation of the Gospel; in the second column are references of the sayings which correspond to passages from the New and Old Testaments. The third column features the translator’s own commentary.

Nearly all of the sayings of Jesus have corresponding passages to the New and Old Testaments. Sometimes those passages match the sayings in the Gospel of Thomas verbatim. So much for heresy.

The charge of heresy perhaps originated from the approach taken in the gospel. As the author/translator, PasserbyDave, notes, the Gospel of Thomas does not teach through parable. These are the sayings of Jesus, statements that speak to the heart of Christianity. Parables not only are intended to reach a predominately uneducated mass of people, but can be more easily tweaked and spun by a better educated clergy. Here, the sayings of Thomas are unvarnished pearls of wisdom that reveal the mystic essence of Jesus’ message.

Speaking of which, PasserbyDave also features another gnostic scripture, The Hymn of the Pearl, which further explain Thomas’ message.

This is truly the definitive edition of the gospel. The identity of the author/translator, PasserbyDave, is unknown, and from his self-description is perhaps a householder and a non-academic, or, as he says, “just a soul on earth.”

If that is the case, if he is a householder, this book is even more remarkable. Scholars, such as Marvin Meyer and others, have made a cottage industry of marketing and re-marketing translations of the gnostic scriptures such as Thomas’. These numerous publications appear with such frequency that they do not appear intended to promote their message but simply to sell books. They are marketed with increased frequency, but have little, if any, real understanding of or concern with the message they contain, or attempt to integrate that message with Biblical passages, nor do they make any effort to show how to apply that message to our individual lives. This edition does.

I really like this guy
By John Munter
I really like this guy. Passerby Dave has got the idea of the higher self that Thomas is about and carries it through consistently with some brilliant insights although he misses some sayings with their historical context. In saying 15 about not worshipping anyone born of women he even very boldly states about the spiritual self that it is “your real Father, God, within you”. In the obscure “If two make peace with each other in the same house” of Saying 48 and 106 doublet he has no problem identifying this with the higher self and lower self in seeing correctly the ‘son of man’ as special terminology for the higher self . Where many commentators choke on Saying 71: “Jesus said: I will destroy this house, and no one will be able to rebuild it..”, Dave forthrightly nails it: “The house to be destroyed is the false self and its domicile in the world…It will not be rebuilt but will be succeeded by the true self that dwells in the Kingdom of Heaven”. While he understands Saying 97 about the broken jar losing the meal as a failure of a lower self, he misses the point, though, that it’s a generic failure of the human capacity to contain the spirit—which he totally understands in Saying 98. Here, the “true self” practices with “the sword” which “symbolizes the truth” to slay “the false self” so “he can pierce through the sturdy façade of his false but unyielding physical identity.”

Though Dave mentions the Holy Spirit in a Protestant sense he misses it as spiritual practice in Thomas. The Holy Spirit-Divine Wisdom-Sophia is not only “within you and outside of you in Saying 3 but its ‘breast’ is the “place of Life” in Saying 4 for an infant before they enter the human covenant or consciousness. It is how you can “know what is in front of you” in Saying 5 and why you should not just follow convention in Saying 6 but ‘Do what you love’. It is the “fire” in Saying 10 which arrives at the “light” of Saying 11 but he seems to appreciate the “infants being nursed “ in Saying 22 who still “understand their true nature”. He misses Saying 44 since blaspheming the Holy Spirit has to do with actions or karma that can only be remediated by other actions--unlike erroneous theologies of the Father and Son which are merely mental errors or ignorance. Dave also misses the subtlety of Saying 80 about the “body” of the world—which is animated by the Holy Spirit. One who finds the wealth of the Spirit in Saying 81 is “rich” which is the “fire” of Saying 82 leading into illuminations of God’s image in Saying 83 and 84. It is also the “wealth” of Saying 85. It is also the “leaven” within the “dough” of creation—not just a mind thing. Significantly, Dave gets Saying 100 about “give God what belongs to God and give me what is mine”. Jesus is saying the Holy Spirit is his which is the “true Mother” in Saying 101—which Dave gets and acknowledges the “oxen…experience the truth” (This is another type like infants nursing on the Spirit.)

I love the way PasserbyDave calls a spade a spade in Saying 34 where the “blind leading the blind” are religious leaders but he misses Saying 35 about them being able “tie your hands” with busy work in order to plunder your spirituality. He is back on again with the weak grapevine of Saying 40 representing “false teachings” of “false religious leaders”. He does betray a little misplaced judgmentalism that is maybe a carry-over from the New Testament. The little fish thrown back into the sea in Saying 8 in favor of the one big fish are not failed converts but failed ideas in contrast to the higher self—the big fish. The seeds that don’t grow in Saying 9 are also not failing people but failed ideas. The “I will choose you, one from one thousand, and two from ten thousand, and they will stand as a single one “ is about the unity of the light—like the next saying—not about how few are getting with the program. The Parable of the Sower in Saying 57 is NOT about some people being weeds and some people being wheat. It reflects the problems of Saying 56 that the “world is a carcass”. Saying 58 answers Saying 57 in saying “Blessed is the person who has suffered (with the weeds in his personal life) and has found life”. The “cornerstone” of Saying 66 is NOT about : “Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but whoever the stone falls on, will be ground to powder”! It is an image of the higher self just like the ‘big fish’, ‘the pearl’, and the ‘big sheep’ are. In Saying 105 Jesus is not calling his mother a harlot: ‘Whoever has come to know the Father and the Mother will be regarded as the son of a harlot’. This is referring to the Sophia Mythos where Sophia created in matter without a male consort. Jesus is saying that he is a son of the Holy Spirit-Sophia in the Bridal Chamber of the Father and Mother.

I really, personally, appreciate his insight into Say 83 and 84 where Thomas, he perceives, switches the meaning of “image”. In 83 it refers to the image of our physical body. In 84 it refers to our image of God. I, also, almost jumped out of my chair with Saying 114. Most scholars who know darn well it is a later addition to the design of Thomas interpret it anyway and add a little footnote like: “some scholars think…” but Dave has enough intuitive knowing and confidence to say: “Saying 114 is not explored here.”! He does give some good explanation about that it conflicts with the genderless quality of the higher self and the high status of Salome in Saying 61.

For a short and simple commentary on Thomas making the case that every saying can be interpreted in the context of the sayings before it and after it, I recommend my new book on Amazon: ‘The Integral Gospel of Thomas Made Easy’.

Skyl ar Baang didn't know what woke her, pulling her from the heavy weight of an exhausted sleep. A sound?

After a grueling forty-eight-hour marathon on her top secret project, she was slower to react than normal.

Wait. A footstep. That sound didn't belong in the empty silence of her house.

Her gut twisted, her heart surging with the panic-soaked memories of her kidnapping as a small child. Twisted emotions accompanied every heartbeat, every breath, evoking the terror that lived in the deep recesses of her mind, always ready to spring on her.

There were monsters—and they didn't live under the bed.

The sound came again, injecting adrenaline into her system. Her eyes sprang open, her vision focused, and she turned her head toward the door.

Somebody was in her house. How did the intruder get past her formidable security? This couldn't be just any ordinary burglar. She didn't have that many valuables.

That meant they weren't exactly here to rob her. Her head whipped around and focused on her laptop. All her research was in there.

Fully awake, she sprang into action. Jerking open the window, she released her emergency fire ladder and turned to slip down it. She stopped when she saw the black SUVs in front of her house. Were there more assailants down below waiting for her? Staccato thumps of boots on her stairs replaced the stealthy footsteps. Crap! That meant there was more than one somebody out there. What the hell was going on?

She raced to the bedroom door. Her first fumbling try at the lock failed. The metal slipped out of her sweaty, trembling fingers. After a few more tries, she finally succeeded. But locking the door wasn't going to stop them for long.

She wasted no time. She had to hide, and the only place for her to go was the attic. She started for her laptop, but the solid thump against the door sent her scrambling for the closet instead. Inside, she grabbed the pull cord and yanked the stairs down. As she climbed, she folded up the lower section. Once in the attic, she pulled on the stairs and the hinged door slammed as she heard them breach her room.

Crack!

The wooden door smashed into the wall, shaking her hiding spot in the rafters. She could see through a small sliver where the ladder met the ceiling. Sweat trickled in a slow track from her hairline down the side of her temple to her cheek. Every muscle in her body was rigid, including the hand she would have raised to brush at the moisture. Her heart fluttered like a tiny, terrified bird in her chest.

Her very life depended on remaining completely still. As a child, reciting the periodic table in her head had kept her calm.

Hydrogen. Atomic number 1. Lightest element. Most abundant element in the universe and makes up about ninety percent of the universe by weight. Hydrogen as water (H2O) is absolutely essential to life, and it is present in all organic compounds.

Several people clamored out of her room, the sounds of their footsteps moving off into the distance. Had her window ruse worked?

Lithium. Atomic number 3. Group 1 element containing just a single valence electron (1s2 2s1). Group 1 elements are called "alkali metals." Lithium is a solid—

There was an outburst, a curse. Was that… Russian?

The dim memories of another bedroom, another night, and men who'd taken her from her home, speaking a foreign language, filled her mind. Wide-eyed, she backed into the deepest corner in reaction. The wood beneath her creaked. She froze.

Her stomach sank when the doorknob to her closet rattled, then twisted, the squeak screaming along her nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard. Light glowed around the attic opening. Her heart stopped. Her breath stopped.

The unmistakable metallic sound of a cocked automatic weapon made her stomach tighten and her heart surge back into action, thumping against the wall of her chest in an almost painful rhythm.

Her muscles trembled, her brain freezing up as everything inside her urged her to run.

But there was nowhere for her to go.

Someone pulled the ladder down, and a fresh injection of adrenaline shot into her system.

Suddenly a shaved head slowly elevated into her line of vision. She pressed her back against a beam, all her muscles tensing until they were sending waves of pain to her brain. The face of a man she didn't recognize. His deep-set black eyes stole her breath, the intent in them sending fear into her blood, prickling her scalp and running like wildfire down her spine. He smiled, but the humor never touched those malevolent eyes. She sucked breath into her lungs to scream, but before she could, a hypodermic sank into her thigh. Her vision immediately blurred, her rapidly beating heart sending the drug even faster through her system. She tried to lash out, but her sluggish arm wouldn't work properly, and he easily blocked her weak attempt to knock him away from her.

He laughed as she plunged into oblivion.

Another sound worked its way into her consciousness. A scraping, tearing sound that replayed over and over until she finally opened her eyes and identified the noise.

Tree branches caught in the wind scraped against the house. Sky didn't have any trees close enough to her home to make that sound, which meant…she was no longer in her own home. Just like before.

She took a moment to get her bearings, her mouth dry and cottony. She had a gag in her mouth. Sodium Pentothal. That was probably what they'd used on her. The effects were quick, fifteen to thirty seconds, but kept a person out for only about ten to fifteen minutes. The room she was in was unfamiliar—a bedroom, judging by the mattress she lay on. She had no idea how long she'd been out. They could have kept injecting her with the drug. She tried to move. Her hands were tied behind her, and her feet were immobilized.

The man who had stabbed her with the needle hadn't bothered to cover his face. That meant he didn't care if she saw it. He was confident that she wouldn't be telling anyone what he looked like.

And if she didn't do something, she would end up a statistic.

Very dead.

Special Agent Vincent "Vin" Fitzgerald eyed his steely opponent. There was a time to give up and a time to dig in and make a stand. This was that time.

Without hesitating, he reached his arm back and threw the dart at the board.

"Ha! A perfect bull's-eye, Vargas. Try and beat that."

Special Agent in Charge Chris Vargas smirked and slid a sidelong glance at his beautiful wife, Sia.

"Wait. Before you throw, let me get some victory beers," Vin said. "I know you'll want to drink to my win." He grinned as he walked away toward the bar in the wake of Chris's laughter. His cell rang, and he reached for it as the bartender caught his eye and Vin raised two fingers.

"Fitzgerald."

"Vinny, it's Lilah."

His sister's voice was subdued and she sounded as if she'd been crying. "What's wrong?"

He grabbed the two opened longneck bottles and pressed the phone between his ear and shoulder, pulling out his wallet and giving the bartender a twenty.

"What is ever right?" She sniffled. "Dad needs you to come home as soon as you can."

"Why?" The volatile mix of anger and frustration made his voice harsher than he'd meant it to be. But this was the same old stuff his dad had been slinging for years. When would he ever understand his son?

"I promised I wouldn't say." When her breath hitched, his heart tightened. "He wants to talk to both of us. I think it's about the company."

"Not this again… Lilah, it's a waste of time."

"Vinny, please don't make me do this alone." He loved his sister and his family; that wasn't in question. What was in question was how many times he would have to hash this over with his father. In the end, he couldn't turn his back on his sister. "When can you come home?"

"I'll have to see."

"Is this your way of putting me off?"

"No, I'll talk to my boss. Don't cry anymore, okay? You're an ugly crier."

"Shut up," she said with a little, watery laugh.

"Oh, Vinny, I miss you. Let me know. Please make it soon."

He went back to the table near the dartboard and set down the drinks.

"Okay, step aside," Chris said. He walked to the board and pulled out the darts, then sauntered back to the place they'd marked in the sand. He raised his arm and…his cell phone rang.

"Ah, an ass-kicking reprieve, Fitzgerald."

"You were the lucky one, boss," Vin said.

"Vargas," he said into the phone's receiver. Vin's instincts went on full alert at the way his boss listened intently, his gray eyes narrowing. "When?"

He looked at his watch as he listened some more.

"We're on it."

Chris hung up and eyed Vin. He knew that look. Vin buttoned the top button of his dress shirt, retying his loose tie and shrugging into his suit coat. Looked as if his long day at the office had just gotten extended.

"Don't worry. I'll take a cab home," Sia said to her husband.

"No, you take the car. I'll catch a ride with Fitzgerald. Sorry to cut our night short, my love. I'll check in with you later."

"I'm just disappointed I didn't get to see Vin trump you at darts."

Chris laughed and kissed her on her upturned, laughing mouth. "Kiss the baby good-night for me."

"What's up?" Vin asked a few minutes later as his boss rattled off an address in a posh Washington, D.C., suburb.

"There's been a break-in at the home of one of the navy's brightest research scientists. A neighbor reported dark SUVs at her house and heard some commotion. The door was left wide open, and it looks like the woman was taken."

"Who's the researcher?"

"Dr. Skylar Baang," Chris said.

"Baang? She's one of the premier talents working for the navy."

"I'm always impressed, Vin, with how much you know."

Vin pulled up to the curb. Bathed in the blue lights from the flashing cruisers, an old lady dressed in a pink fuzzy robe stood on the porch with one of the D.C. cops, her hands in constant motion around her face, her long, gray hair in a braid down her back.

Pulling up to Dr. Baang's house, they got out of the car, and Vin said, "Chris, after this case, I need to talk to you about some personal time. I've got to go back home."

"Sure. Let's see what we have here, and we can work it out."

"Thanks."

As Vin and his boss approached, two more cars screeched to the curb. Amber Dalton, a tall, athletic blonde, emerged from the first car and met the second agent, Beau Jerrott, who ran his hands through his black, mussed hair and over his dark stubble.

He cut in front of her. "Hey, whatever happened to beauty before age?" Amber said.

"It's trumped by a full-fledged agent before a probie."

"I was a lieutenant in the JAG Corps before I ever started here."

"But here you're a probie."

Her eyes narrowed. "Did you have a hot date?"

"That's none of your business."

"I bet you used your sexy Cajun accent on her. Chère, you and me, kiss kiss." She screwed up her face and made smacking noises with her lips.

"Both of you knock it off," Chris said.

"I'll be an agent in two months," she hissed.

"Still a probie," Beau said before they were both cut off by their boss's stern look.

As they approached Dr. Baang's front porch, the cop stepped aside, and the old woman turned to them, her face still white. Her creased eyes held the worry of a neighbor who was close to the victim. Before his boss could ask any questions, Vin said, "Officer Cranston, what are you doing forcing this lovely lady to stand out here in the middle of the night? You must be chilled to the bone, Mrs…."

"Ms. Childers and, yes, I am."

She relaxed as he'd expected. A comfortable witness gave information faster than a panicked one. Time was of the essence. He took her frail hand and led her into the house. She settled on the sofa. "Amber, can you get her a glass of water?" Amber nodded and went off into the kitchen. He turned back to the witness. "Can you tell us what you saw?"

With a grateful half smile, Ms. Childers said, "Four men, dressed in black and carrying what looked like—" she gulped, and her hand fluttered to her chest "—automatic weapons. One of them had poor Dr. Baang over his shoulder. I could tell because she has this unmistakable long, black hair and she's such a slender woman. Not more than five-four and she can't weigh more than a hundred and ten pounds."

Amber came back from the kitchen and handed Ms. Childers a glass of water. She took a long drink. "They put her into one of the two vehicles in front of her house and drove off."

"What were you doing up so late?"

"Couldn't sleep. I was doing needlepoint by the window, and I saw them come out of the house."

"So, you didn't see them go in?"

"No. They must have entered from the back. But I did notice the SUVs' sleek, dark color with tinted windows. They looked new. I thought maybe Dr. Baang had company. She works for the government, you know."

"The navy, actually. Did you get a license-plate number on either vehicle?"

"No. I had my reading glasses on to see with close-up work. By the time I got them off, they were gone."

"Thank you, Ms. Childers. The officer will escort you back home."

"That was smooth, Fitzgerald," Beau said. "She was on the verge of panic. I saw it, too."

"Back to the Yard," Chris, their boss, ordered. "Time is ticking."

My Review:

Dr. Sky Baang has been, since age of six a tool anyone and everyone wants get their hands on. Both her mother and her father gave their lives to protect Sky and keep her out of reach of those who would abuse Sky and take advantage of her vast intelligence. As such, Sky has devoted her life to her work and honoring the sacrifice made by her parents. Her name and abilities are well-known around the world and so Sky has always isolated herself from others, taken steps to insure her personal safety and, devoted herself completely to the work she does. Despite Sky’s best efforts, she is still a target.

The night Dr. Sky Baang is targeted for kidnapping, Agent Vin Fitzgerald responds to the call and not only helps save Sky’s life but takes a bullet for her. Vin has spent his life in the service of his country and protecting Sky and all that she knows is a further extension of his service. Vin is committed to his career and now, he is committed to protecting Sky until the threat to her safety and life are neutralized. Within the first 24 hours of knowing Sky, Vin discovers that the threat to her is not only real but far, far more serious than anyone initially suspected. In fact, Vin decides the best and most effective way to protect Sky is to get her out of town and into a safe house.

The safe house Vin chooses for he and Sky is remote, isolated and, the perfect place for the two to lie low until the threat to Sky is eliminated. It is also the perfect place for the two to further explore the very confusing feelings they have for one another. The physical attraction is certainly there – they did meet under extreme adrenaline pumping circumstances – but there is also a connection on deeper level. Sky has rarely ever encountered anyone who can keep up with her intellectually and Vin has rarely ever met anyone who can totally understand his decision to work as an agent and not as a part of his family’s business. The time in the safe house is hot, heavy, erotic, tension-filled, flirtatious, and sometimes a bit scary. Both Vin and Sky fully appreciate the nature of their circumstances are unique and likely heightening their responses to one another. Both are along for the ride but both are also wondering if there is a future for them beyond the confines of the safe house.

The Bottom Line: I devoured this read!! Designated Target is fast-paced, well-written and has two main characters that I enjoyed thoroughly. In fact, both Vin and Sky are such full, well-rounded characters that I found it difficult to like one more than the other. Where Sky is nerdy (YAY!) and a bit awkward in social settings, Vin is intelligent and comfortable around nearly anyone. Sky’s intelligence has always been her shield and her protection but Vin is able to keep up with her intellectually and breaks down some of her walls. The sexual chemistry between the two is red hot and with Vin’s patience and willingness to be “used” by Sky, Sky is able to overcome some of her awkwardness and thoroughly explore Vin. Seriously, these two have some seriously sensual moments!! Don’t mistake my meaning here: sure, the sex is a good chunk of the read but it never overwhelms the characters or the plot. The naughty bits are tied to the plot and the drama, always appropriate and, a total enhancement to the overall read. The action is just right for this read and keeps the read moving at a quick though not too fast pace. In all, Karen Anders has once again delivered a solid and entertaining read for Harlequin!

Adventurous romance filled with lots of risks
By A. Richard
The ideal balance of danger and passion makes the latest book in the To Protect and Serve miniseries continuously enthralling. Whether the main couple are fleeing from ruthless kidnappers or enjoying a moment of sensual intimacy, the scene is always believable with genuine emotions conveyed. Karen Anders makes her suspenseful story particularly convincing by creating true-to-life characters whose reactions come across as very realistic. DESIGNATED TARGET has adrenaline-pumping scenarios where outcomes are never assured until the last second.

Since Dr. Skylar Baang was kidnapped when she was young, she is alarmed when sounds associated with that ordeal are heard in her house one night. Though evasive action is attempted, she is taken captive by armed men. When NCIS special agent Vincent Fitzgerald and other team members are called upon to locate Skylar, he knows the scientist needs to be quickly found because of the secretive navy project which she is currently working on. Though they manage to get her back using his deductive skills, the threat to her has not been eliminated and Vin is assigned to be her guardian.

Not being able to work on her research does not make Skylar happy, as her whole life has been dedicated to her career choice. There has been no time for a social life, so being around a sexy man like Vin is something totally new for her. As the two try to stay a step ahead of whoever seems determined to kidnap her, he vows to keep her safe. Yet for the first time in his life, Vin is tempted to let his desire for Skylar make the mission more than just duty.

If watching any of the NCIS programs are a favorite pastime, then you will definitely enjoy the To Protect and Serve miniseries by Karen Anders. Or the story could make you want to discover what riveting plots you have been missing. The author takes you into the heart of this government organization where agents keep others safe by any means possible. Situations are realistically depicted with details that grab your attention, and I came to care for those who put their lives on the line for someone they just met. The jeopardy to Vin and Skylar is extremely perilous at times, and what would ultimately happen to them caused several very anxious moments. As for the mystery of who is responsible for terrorizing Skylar, any related events are cleverly handled.

While threats make the story gripping, the mounting desire plus emotional connection between Vin and Skylar is just as engrossing. He is someone who constantly remains in control, yet being around the desirable scientist causes Vin to make this assignment very personal. Being in a sexual relationship with a man is something that Skylar has never before faced, and her extraordinary mind becomes confused when feelings turn conflicted. Though these two characters are opposites in many ways, both have a strong-willed personality and it shows up quite a few times. A number of qualities Vin possesses make him honorable, yet it is his kindhearted caring that I will long remember. While Skylar may someone who is awkward around people, she is still able to do what is necessary when needed. The desire felt by them for each other is off the charts, and they expressed their feelings with much passion. Karen Anders makes these two individuals come to life in every scene. DESIGNATED TARGET is an adventurous romance filled with one risk after another.

fast moving book with action/suspence, and romance
By paula legate
This was a fast moving, action/suspense packed book. I also loved that it was equal parts romance.

The book starts out with Dr. Sky Baang being kidnapped by Russian mercenary's. She was able to escape with the help of special agent Vin Fitzgerald, and his team. Sky is a genius, for she attended university at the tender age of 10. She was kidnapped at age 6 by the Chinese government to be used as a tool. Now she works for the U.S. Government on a top secret project as a scientist. Her parents gave up everything including their life, to keep Sky safe, now she feels it is her duty to give back, and honor their memory. She only has time in her life for her work. She is book smart, but with her work, and studies, she has very little real world experiences, and has only had the opportunity to spend time with other super smart, lab wearing scientist.

Vincent is assigned to protect Sky. For the first time in her life she noticed a man's muscles. No one she has worked with looked like Vincent. She was immediately drawn to him. Vincent is drawn to the sexy scientist. He enjoys her random facts. When Sky feels uncomfortable she has a tendency to throw out random facts. It is a relief to find another person that she can talk to, and that understands her.

This was a fun book, with action, and suspense. Vincent knows that Sky is not just another job. He will do anything to protect her, and keep her safe, including stepping in front of a bullet. Will Vince and his team find out why the Russians are attempting to kidnap Sky, and will they be able to protect her?

Through the Palace Keyhole, by Ann Hutchison Sawalha

From the Arab world comes a story of the love between an Arab man and an American woman which lasted more than half a century.

In 1958, Sami Sawalha took his young bride to his Jordanian homeland. Uprooted from all that was familiar to her, Ann faced the cultural and linguistic challenges head on and began to assimilate herself into her husband’s tribe – a proud and ancient Bedouin people who trace their roots to before the coming of Islam.

Building up the family hotel business on both sides of the Jordan River posed even greater challenges: the lack of privacy in living cheek by jowl with relatives in half-built hotels, bringing up a family under Israeli occupation, constantly under threat during the on-going strife in the region, the shortage of basic amenities and services, and their love repeatedly tested by their own contrasting cultures and attitudes.

As their business prospered, through the doors of The Palace Hotels came a succession of well-known faces, including many of the power brokers and éminences gris of the Middle Eastern conflict.

Ann Sawalha, an accute observer of human nature, tells the story of her life with Sami with love and humour. Set against the backdrop of the momentous political upheavals of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it is a compelling memoir.

The family’s hotels survive as a tribute to Sami’s dreams and strength, and Ann’s unwavering determination to support him.

About the Author
Born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1935 and raised in Detroit, Ann Sawalha met Sami in 1956 at the hospital where she was training to be a nurse. After graduating, and until their marriage, she worked as a surgical nurse in urology. In March 1959, Ann and Sami left America in its post-war golden age to go to the Middle East. It was a time when air travel was rare, telephone connections were relayed by appointment, and the region was underdeveloped. On her arrival in Jordan Ann was introduced to her husband’s large Arab Christian tribe, the Azzizat, and began to learn about their heritage, culture and customs. Sami entered the family hotel business and during their 53-year marriage they lived in three of the five Palace Hotels owned and operated by the family on both the east and west banks of the River Jordan. Ann’s nursing qualifications proved useful in Jerusalem after the June War of 1967, where they lived for 18 years, raising their children under Israeli occupation. The frustrations and uncertainties of life in occupied Jerusalem prompted Sami to build two hotels in Amman, where they eventually moved in 1982. Ann has looked through the various Palace keyholes at the culture, religion, war, politics, business and family that have surrounded her. Her life with family unfolds simultaneously with the tumultuous events of a region in crisis and transition.nn’s beloved Sami died in 2011, but she continues to live in Amman, Jordan. She is mother to Leah, Lenna, and Hanna and grandmother to Rawan, Shereen, Sami, Nadine, and Rakan.

A Most Memorable Read
By Thomas R.
I have not finished the book yet but I knew the author and her late husband from a tour of duty with the United Nations during the late stages of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. I lived in the Jerusalem Palace Hotel for a month before I got otherwise settled in Jerusalem but visited the hotel and Sami and Ann almost daily. Our 7 year old son played with their then young son, Hannah. The book is bringing back great memories of our introduction to another culture ripe with intrigue, wonderful food and friendship. A great read.

A friend sent me this wonderful book. I might not have known about it ...
By Jane F. Geniesse
A friend sent me this wonderful book. I might not have known about it otherwise, as none of the papers that I usually read (NYT, WSJ, Atlantic, NYReview, etc) have seen fit to review it--which is scandalous as it is a terrific tale that says much about life in the fractured Middle East. It is a true story, told with verve, humor, and insight, of what it was like for a girl from Michigan who was a student nurse to meet a charming young Jordanian orderly in a California hospital, fall in love, marry him, and join his family in their Jordan hotel business. Living in and running any hotel offers amusing enough material in itself, but this is also an account of an American innocent with no previous knowledge of regional politics having to adjust to a radically different culture as Ann meets the fascinating characters in her husband Sami's extended family and endures mutiple wars waged by Israel, suicide bombs that send tourists fleeing, and all the other political upheavals encountered during their fifty-three years of marriage. Clearly Ann and her husband were not only creative but remarkably resilent to have faced the life she writes so vividly about, eventually owning and running five hotels, all with "Palace" in their name. Whether it was her descriptions of the exraordinary members of Sami's huge Bedouin tribe--the Christian Azzisats who trace their lineage almost to the birth of Christ, or their array of colorful and sometimes quite eccentric hotel employees, or the celebrated and famous people who stayed with them, it is a hard book to put down. From the terror of the 1967 war with friends killed and bullets flying over their own heads at their Jerusalem hotel, to the effort decades later of Ann and her friends in 2003 to persuade American diplomats to give time to negotiations with Saddam Hussein for a way to avoid war, keeps the reader enthralled. I loved this book. It tells us much we need to know.

honest storytelling
By Lisa Palczewski
I have grown up hearing stories about my cousins Ann, Sami, Leah, Lenna, and Hanna (John) Sawalha. Ann's annual Christmas letters have updated my parents and now me about the family's hotels, travels, and growth. Ann's memoir, though, not only fills in the history of her loving marriage with Sami, but it also informs readers of the often difficult cultural, religious, economic, and political challenges she has witnessed and experienced during her half century in Jordan. Through her honest reflective narration, I now have a deeper understanding of Ann's strengths as a mother, wife, daughter, and proud Jordanian.
