Building up the family hotel business on both sides of the Jordan River posed even greater challenges: the lack of privacy in living cheek by jowl with relatives in half-built hotels, bringing up a family under Israeli occupation, constantly under threat during the on-going strife in the region, the shortage of basic amenities and services, and their love repeatedly tested by their own contrasting cultures and attitudes.
As their business prospered, through the doors of The Palace Hotels came a succession of well-known faces, including many of the power brokers and éminences gris of the Middle Eastern conflict.
Ann Sawalha, an accute observer of human nature, tells the story of her life with Sami with love and humour. Set against the backdrop of the momentous political upheavals of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it is a compelling memoir.

About the Author
Born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1935 and raised in Detroit, Ann Sawalha met Sami in 1956 at the hospital where she was training to be a nurse. After graduating, and until their marriage, she worked as a surgical nurse in urology. In March 1959, Ann and Sami left America in its post-war golden age to go to the Middle East. It was a time when air travel was rare, telephone connections were relayed by appointment, and the region was underdeveloped. On her arrival in Jordan Ann was introduced to her husband’s large Arab Christian tribe, the Azzizat, and began to learn about their heritage, culture and customs. Sami entered the family hotel business and during their 53-year marriage they lived in three of the five Palace Hotels owned and operated by the family on both the east and west banks of the River Jordan. Ann’s nursing qualifications proved useful in Jerusalem after the June War of 1967, where they lived for 18 years, raising their children under Israeli occupation. The frustrations and uncertainties of life in occupied Jerusalem prompted Sami to build two hotels in Amman, where they eventually moved in 1982. Ann has looked through the various Palace keyholes at the culture, religion, war, politics, business and family that have surrounded her. Her life with family unfolds simultaneously with the tumultuous events of a region in crisis and transition.nn’s beloved Sami died in 2011, but she continues to live in Amman, Jordan. She is mother to Leah, Lenna, and Hanna and grandmother to Rawan, Shereen, Sami, Nadine, and Rakan.

A Most Memorable Read

I have not finished the book yet but I knew the author and her late husband from a tour of duty with the United Nations during the late stages of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. I lived in the Jerusalem Palace Hotel for a month before I got otherwise settled in Jerusalem but visited the hotel and Sami and Ann almost daily. Our 7 year old son played with their then young son, Hannah. The book is bringing back great memories of our introduction to another culture ripe with intrigue, wonderful food and friendship. A great read.

A friend sent me this wonderful book. I might not have known about it otherwise, as none of the papers that I usually read (NYT, WSJ, Atlantic, NYReview, etc) have seen fit to review it--which is scandalous as it is a terrific tale that says much about life in the fractured Middle East. It is a true story, told with verve, humor, and insight, of what it was like for a girl from Michigan who was a student nurse to meet a charming young Jordanian orderly in a California hospital, fall in love, marry him, and join his family in their Jordan hotel business. Living in and running any hotel offers amusing enough material in itself, but this is also an account of an American innocent with no previous knowledge of regional politics having to adjust to a radically different culture as Ann meets the fascinating characters in her husband Sami's extended family and endures mutiple wars waged by Israel, suicide bombs that send tourists fleeing, and all the other political upheavals encountered during their fifty-three years of marriage. Clearly Ann and her husband were not only creative but remarkably resilent to have faced the life she writes so vividly about, eventually owning and running five hotels, all with "Palace" in their name. Whether it was her descriptions of the exraordinary members of Sami's huge Bedouin tribe--the Christian Azzisats who trace their lineage almost to the birth of Christ, or their array of colorful and sometimes quite eccentric hotel employees, or the celebrated and famous people who stayed with them, it is a hard book to put down. From the terror of the 1967 war with friends killed and bullets flying over their own heads at their Jerusalem hotel, to the effort decades later of Ann and her friends in 2003 to persuade American diplomats to give time to negotiations with Saddam Hussein for a way to avoid war, keeps the reader enthralled. I loved this book. It tells us much we need to know.

honest storytelling

I have grown up hearing stories about my cousins Ann, Sami, Leah, Lenna, and Hanna (John) Sawalha. Ann's annual Christmas letters have updated my parents and now me about the family's hotels, travels, and growth. Ann's memoir, though, not only fills in the history of her loving marriage with Sami, but it also informs readers of the often difficult cultural, religious, economic, and political challenges she has witnessed and experienced during her half century in Jordan. Through her honest reflective narration, I now have a deeper understanding of Ann's strengths as a mother, wife, daughter, and proud Jordanian.
