Intelligently written and well-researched

Another great Kyle Masters thriller from pilot/author Dana Griffin, in which Kyle’s NTSB investigator wife, Lori, finds herself at the center of an aircraft accident investigation and caught between cross-hairs.

Griffin approaches this installment differently, putting hard-as-nails Lori Masters in the driver’s seat for the first half of the book. Kyle and Lori’s daughter, Brooke, eventually get involved and soon fists and bullets are flying. It’s at this point Kyle takes the story over, a transition I thought Griffin handled quite well.

The investigation is intelligently written and clearly well-researched. I found dialogue smart, action scenes fun, and adored Kyle, as always. He is a quirky, cool kickass, not one of these cookie-cutter action heroes, and I look forward to his next high-octane airline thriller, and will think twice about flying. Really, Dana Griffin, what do you know that we don’t?

What Grisham is to legal thrillers; Dana Griffin is to airline mysteries...

Full Disclosure: As a reader of the first two books in the Kyle Master series, I was given an advanced reader copy of Calamity for a fair and unbiased review.

As an experienced pilot himself, Author Dana Griffin, knows how to write an airline thriller that keeps the reader captivated. The characters are not only engaging, but he reveals their flies, and allows them to add the right dose of humor to keep the plot from getting bogged down with the semantics of an accident scene investigation.

The always affable, but cocky Kyle Masters takes a back seat out of the gate, while his wife, Lori Masters competently takes the lead as the NTSB Investigator when a Contrail’s Airplane makes a forced landing in blizzard-like conditions in Denver, causing numerous injuries and dozens to suffer with hypothermia. Questions arise from the start when an individual from aircraft certification services is tasked with taking part in the investigation, but things get more ominous when Lori discovers the digital flight data recorder is missing, which could mean grounding the aircraft – a major detriment to the airline and manufacturer.

Meanwhile, Lori’s daughter, Brooke, makes an unannounced appearance at home, advising Kyle that she won’t be returning to school, which arouses their suspicions, but is a telling sign that the thrilling action is going to be a family affair. While confined at home, Kyle starts digging into the airline and manufacture, and learns that the company is vying for a billion-dollar Navy contract. When he and Brooke fly to the Denver area to join up with Lori, the action and suspense inevitably follow. Murder, kidnapping, and even a little bit of political drama put them in the cross-hairs, as the minions behind the company vying the billion dollar contract pull out all the stops to reach their objective, making the ending an exhilarating conclusion.

A little bit of family drama thrown into the mix, makes the story an overall entertaining read, and keeps the reader interested in keeping up with the Masters' family.

ANOTHER HIGH OCTANE-FUELED ADVENTURE!

CALAMITY is another high octane-fueled adventure by Dana Griffin. The NTSB sends Lori Masters’, Kyle’s wife, to investigate a forced landing in blizzard conditions at Denver’s International Airport. Contrail’s Airline, a foreign manufactured jet is vying for a contract with the US Military. The case goes quickly off-course when the “black-box,” goes mysteriously missing and the uppity-ups in command refuse to allow their pilot’s interviews. Brooke, Lori’s daughter, arrives unannounced with her own web of secrets. Add a murder and a kidnapping and you have a recipe for excitement. It wouldn’t be a Kyle Masters’ book if he didn’t infiltrate enemy lines and get sucked up into a dangerous crosswind of politics and airline scandal with some nail-biting suspense thrown in for good-ending touchdown. I will fasten my seatbelt (in advance) in preparation for the next Dana Griffin flight!

For six months while Raymond waited with his battalion, the 91st Medical Gas Treatment Battalion, to follow the First Army into Normandy on D-Day + 17, a local family treated him as a son. The British mother and daugher began a correspondence with American's Mary and Hazel to share their concerns and what life was like during that time. The letters are transcribed, illustrated with photos from a companion album, and enhanced with family and wartime history.

A very special book

I don't mind confessing that I cried at various times while reading this book. A huge number of letters written by Raymond Howard Lee to his mother and sister - during WWII - were found in his sister's attic, when she was 95 and had to move out of her house. There were also letters from a British mother and daughter who befriended Raymond. Many of the letters are shown in the book, in addition to some photos and ephemera. Raymond's daughter published this book and it was obviously a real labor of love, including managing to track down the British grandson.

This book is a wonderful reminder about the innate goodness of some people and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Ready for some heavy analysis?

Speelman has a reputation for exhaustive analysis and deeply conceived endgame strategies. This book certainly reinforces both of these descriptions, but Speelman also shows a bloodthirsty side! His organization is a bit unusual, dividing the games into two general sections ("Growing up as a Chessplayer" and "Themes"). This has certain advantages, but given the depth of his commentary (sometimes spending more than two pages on a single move), I would prefer a more traditional format. The games are entertaining and instructive. I have always been a fan of Speelman's style, and this book ranks among the year's best. However, I wonder how many readers will actually go through every comment of this densely packed trove.

Unusually frank and human record of a grandmaster's thoughts

Jon Speelman is one of the strongest British players ever, having reached the Candidates' Tournament and beaten some of the world's top grandmasters. His style is exceptionally interesting, combining pragmatism with fantasy, and he is an authority on the endgame. When Speelman gets unhappy with his position almost anything can happen, and his opponents are chronically aware of the "swindling hazard" they incur by gaining an advantage against him. In one of the games in this splendid collection, he sacrifices his queen for a couple of minor pieces - a transaction which, in a lesser player, would look like a downright blunder - then consolidates his position and clinches a win against a strong opponent by the most logical of moves. Such exploits invite comparison with the legendary David Bronstein, who arguably would have been world champion if he could have overcome his boredom with humdrum chess.

Speelman is one of the game's great fighters, as witness his wins against players like John Nunn, Nigel Short, Tony Miles and Viktor Korchnoy. This book also includes his two draws against Kasparov - one of them from a position with tripled isolated pawns! - which must have left the Baku maestro fuming and frustrated.

This book is hugely instructive from the practical player's point of view, because it gives insights into how chess games are really decided at the highest level. None of your crystal-clear strategic crushes here, consistent from first move to last. Speelman is breathtakingly candid about his thought processes and the sometimes apparently random factors that make the difference. A study of his games is bound to make anyone's play more resilient and resourceful - as well as being great fun and, occasionally, awe-inspiring.

MARVELLOUS GAME COLLECTION

A collection of Jon Speelman's games was always going to be of interest.

In the Introduction Speelman says "I realise some of these analyses are obsessive; and beg the reader's indulgence for the product of sleepless nights". Nothing to apologise over in the least. It's great to get some real chess food to chew over instead of the often insipid fare served up by lesser chefs. If only all chess books were this good. And he is an erudite commentator with an unusual command of the English language.

Check out his 21st move from his game, with Black, against Kasparov ( Linares 1992). Speelman Played 21... Be3!?! where he says:-

"Kasparov returned to the board. If 8...a5 and 10...a3 had caused something of a reaction, this was altogether in a different league. His eyebrows arched and he sunk into deep thought."

The game was eventually drawn. The previous year at Linares Kasparov could again only draw, as White, despite Speelman's bizarre trebled pawns. Kasparov was none too pleased either at failing to make the full point here, I'm delighted to say. Good for Speelman on both counts!

The collection here consists of "only" 38 games. But don't be deceived as there is a ton of good stuff therein.

Speelman is a highly original player and can be deadly playing either colour. See Game 35 where he crushes Zsuzsa Polgar in just 18 moves playing an English Defence (Holland 1993). Classy stuff. Another English Defence was his game against Tony Miles (Morecambe 1975). This time he was White and he won a mind boggingly unconventional and complicated game. What I always remember about this game was the way his 'h' pawn just kept going up the board.

Speelman is also a fantastic endgame player and has studied this phase of the game in some detail. If his opponents survive the middlegame then the endgame is something they can look forward to being on the receiving end of.

The book is also peppered with amusing anecdotes when you least expect them. On a certain hotel he writes:-

"The rooms were tiny and extremely cold; and the food far from cordon bleu. Indeed, the dining room in the Yelton is the only eatery where I've ever seen a fly in soup; sadly, Jonathan Mestel was either too dumbfounded or too nonplussed to summon up the appropiate response."

There is also an hilarious story involving a sealed move ( remember those adjournments ?) which is better not mentioned here!

All in all a great instructive and entertaining chess book. If I was ever stranded on a desert Island then this is the book I would want to have at my side.

I am responsible for the culture that shapes me

The Tattooed Jesus: What Would the Real Jesus Do with Pop Culture? is a worth while read. I would have to honestly say it was better than I thought and left reading challenged in how I interact with culture. I left reading thinking that if I died today and someone did an autopsy of me what things would they see that have impacted me the most. Mr. Swanson paints a clear picture that the things you see, hear and do are the things that are going to impact you. He addresses the dichotomy that exists of what is clearly taught in scripture and what is ultimately acted out. He goes after the forms of media specifically that are shaping culture more than government rulings or church attendance. He wasn't afraid to bring up any form of media and articulate it's usefulness of addressing and shaping the culture. Why do we expose our precious minds over and over to horrific acts on TV, Mr. Swanson asks. Truly we would never stand outside our house and watch drama unfold as we do in watching TV. After I read his section on music shaping culture I decided to see what where the top songs on the different charts and read their lyrics. I honestly couldn't get through the top rap song lyrics without finding anything uplifting or positive. And could only think that yes if I sang that song over and over yes that is going to shape me a very destructive manner. Thankfully The Tattooed Jesus isn't full of pointing fingers at others but instead clearly is pointing the finger of responsibility upon each one of us and especially us as parents. Did I agree with how everything was said no, but I left reading the book being challenged to address how culture is shaping and forming me in ways and manners I hadn't thought about before.

Brilliant!

This is a timely book by pastor Swanson. He brings to discussion a theme that is essential for christianity nowadays. He gives concise and direct illustraions on how the lack of discernment towards biblical understanding of culture is bringing christians and o called christians down This is a very importante and relevant book for all to read. A Wake-up call to families not to be taken away by the fallen cultural trends of the time. I highly recommend this book. We must read and reread it! Another importante feature is that pastor Swanson is not shy to name names and point to the proper and improper cultural figures of our time. Other books that are as relevant as this one are: 'The Truth War' (by John Macarthur), 'Who are You to Judge?` (by Erwin Lutzer), "The Great Evangelical Disaster" (by Francis Schaeffer)

As author Kevin Swanson aptly stated in a previous book: "Truth is taking the Word of God and applying it to the situation at hand." This Swanson has masterfully done in 'The Tattooed Jesus.' Raising insightful and thought-provoking questions, Swanson encourages the reader to return to the Scriptures for answers to the cultural war enveloping the modern world.

"The cultural war tests the true commitment of the human heart," Swanson begins. "By their fruits ye shall know them," Christ declared (Matt. 7:20). So, what would Jesus do with pop culture? How would His followers respond to the cultural choices surrounding them? Swanson's book is a clarion call to examine the modern world in a Biblical, Christ-exalting manner. Excellent read. Highly recommended.

The Hanauer Family Before, During and After the Holocaust

I own over 900 Holocaust books and there are about
500 more Holocaust books that I want to buy and read.
This book was very exciting to read, because I have
searched for lost ancestors myself, but I would not
have bought it if I knew there wasn't a 'Holocaust Story'
in the book. There were too many papers in the book
that would only be valuable to the Hanauer family members.

True story about the Holocaust victums.

This is a true story of one family separated in a consentration camp. How some family members were killed and how horrible the life was of the one that lived. The work they were forced to do was backbreaking, the days long, with very little food to sustain him.When he was finely freed, he had no home to go to as it was lived in by someone else. Sad, but true. We can't let that happen again.

Specifically a family history

This book really is specifically a family history for the author to preserve important family lineage memories for future generations of their family. For that reason it is both good and bad. Good for the importance of presenting photos and documents but less good for being of general value to non family members. I really had hoped I could read a story of the family history presented as a chronological account. Unfortunately for that aim, the book is largely a presentation of correspondences between the author and various research channels and photos of family.
What I thought the book lacked was a continual story that invested me in their journey. I personally found all of the many letters and documents interesting for their own sake, but lacking in as far as the story of the family and telling me about the people involved.
There were a few small personal accounts and a couple of generally interesting German correspondences of the time, but generally I was disappointed in the overall presentation of anything other than a family history collection.
