When I got home from work and saw the poor creature eating dinner, I knew it wasn't a good sign. I was naturally concerned for his well being but still strongly voiced my objections. However, all my logical reasons for not keeping this stray animal, fell on deaf ears. Nikki named him Bud and after a few misadventures he became a valued part of the family, with his laid back ways and sweet temperament. I slowly came around to my wife's point of view and was glad she had persevered. Nikki had somehow known that Bud was special. Bud went from roaming the Blue Ridge Mountains in the freezing winters, to playing on a warm barrier island in Southwest Florida on a dog friendly beach. A heart warming rags to riches dog story.

Wow what an amazing book, it came to me by complete chance

Wow what an amazing book, it came to me by complete chance, I found so much in common with the author and many answers to my own questions. I haven't finish a book in 10 years, this one I couldn't put down. I wish there was a way to get in touch with the Author :)

Karen Bauer, author of 100 Things I Learned in Heaven is a gifted medium. In this book, Karen shares her life journey and how it lead her to heaven many times. She has lived an interesting life that most of us could never imagine. This book is a gift to us and we will learn much from her experiences and knowledge. Highly recommended.

A PURE JOY TO READ!

I thought maybe one of the reasons I loved the book so much and couldn't put it down - was because I know Julie Bloomer personally. Then my partner picked it up last week and began reading it - who has never met Julie -- and he also could not put it down. He finished it this morning and loved it. I used to work with Julie and knew what a fabulous writer she was - as she never lost a battle in court with her briefs. But this book is such a wonderful departure from writing a legal brief - and I know she enjoyed writing it. She would go through dozens of drafts with briefs - so I can't imagine how many drafts she went through with this - but the end product is so full of love and beauty - and is just so amazingly accessible. I think above all, that may be one of the most wonderful things about the book overall. And because of that - it made it easier for me to get completely wrapped up in every detail. It was a pure joy to read! Thank you, Julie!

Gracie's Tail was a wonderful read for so many reasons. I always wanted to think that I could communicate with my own Gracie and the authors experience with her intuitive dog enlightened my perception with respect to my relationship with my dog. I have always felt that the unconditional love I was so fortunate to be on the receiving end of had to be the answer to so many problems we all have in communication. This book took me on a journey of how to communicate and receive love as I followed the author's own personal quest of self discovery with the help of Gracie. A Must read for everyone interested in personal growth and the possibility of communicating with their pet.

Not just for dog owners...

I read this book and started having longer conversations with my cat. She seems to appreciate it, though I have not heard her speak in the way Gracie conversed with Julie. Maybe it just takes time. Julie is pretty evolved and had a good teacher in Gracie--so that may make a difference--but whether you have an animal to converse with or not, this is a revelatory story--a brave telling of a period in a life that is dynamic, brave, and alive--all that the human journey is meant to be.

This handbook is intended for the use of young beginners in their elementary practice with watchwork. The technical terms will be useful for reference to many who are older hands; the technology of the horological art having been somewhat neglected till quite recently.

The early chapters embrace information on the repair and adjustment of watchwork which I wrote for the guidance of young beginners, and published intermittingly in a periodical. Several readers urged that this matter should be reproduced in book-form, and assured me that it would benefit a wide circle of young jobbers and have a large sale.

The Glossary of Terms used in Watchwork, which forms a large portion of this book, was prepared several years ago, and forms part of what was intended to be a comprehensive treatise on Practical Horology.

Bad OCR Scan book.

Don't get it.

This book is obviously an Optical Character Reader Program scan of an old manual. No effort was made to correct any bad character scans or even ensure the correct order of the material. All the illustrations are "piled up" at the back of the book even though the text will refer to them directly as if they were on the same page as the text.

The 1800s Vision That Launched the Digital Revolution

What resonated with me the most was the practical demonstration of how every invention first appears as an idea, but not necessarily by its inventor. Metaphysics, positive thinkers, and even the Bible tells us that first comes the thought, the dream, the desire, and then comes the physical manifestation of it.

Marry this concept to the vision of genius geeks, with their single-minded focus of making something real that previously existed only in their imagination, and you end up with a fun, fascinating read on the brilliant minds that brought us into the digital age.

What's truly fascinating is what the early "digital" machines were actually used for, but I won't spoil your fun of finding out. It definitely peaked my interest.

Great book that summarizes how we got to the digital age.

This book was a real eye-opener for me. I had no idea the roots of the modern digital age lay in the late 1800s, and included women. I think like most people, my first impression of anything involving the Internet, computers, and digital anything, is of a smart, geeky male inventing it in his garage in the early 1980s. I was surprised and glad to learn that women were right there at the beginning. From Ada Lovelace, daughter of poet Lord Byron and a math geek, who laid the foundations for modern programming, to Grace Hopper who wrote the first programming text, women have made significant contributions. They actually helped pave the way for Bill and Steve.

It is a fascinating read that takes you all the way from the embryonic beginning in the 1840s to the present day digital age. The book flows from one development to another, building from the earliest beginnings to the modern day digital age. I gained an understanding and appreciation for what some of those nifty abbreviations stand for, like HTML and ARPANET.

But what really impressed me was discovering the collaboration and shared information between all these innovators that really made all this possible. They not only came up with innovative ideas, they created a corporate culture that supports the blend of art and science that continues to bring us true innovation. Now I understand why tech companies like Google and Apple have such laid-back styles. It’s not really about being cool; it’s about being smart.

What a great read this was. I highly recommend this book. It’s concise, well written and will give you a clear understanding of what the digital revolution is and how we got there.

Enlightening, sometimes surprising history of the digital revolution

This was a fascinating guide to the birth of the computer and the Internet as we know it. This is a summary of the Walter Isaacson history of those who triggered the digital revolution. It’s a quick read, touching on the main points of the Isaacson book, beautifully organized and broken down with chapter-by-chapter “instaread summaries” at the end of each section. Clearly-written and concise, I would recommend this as a companion to the complete version of “The Innovators” or as a stand-alone for someone who is targeting the main “talking points” of the full book.

Could have been better

I was really interested in learning more about the information that the title portrayed but not impressed by the way the author used the book to sell many other books that he'd written. This book does contain much information but very scattered throughout numerous subjects. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Spirit and its salvation. About the Author
Marie NDiaye met her father for the first time at age 15, two years before publishing her first novel. It Ain't Easy Being Green...

Self-Portrait in Green (translated by Jordan Stump, review copy courtesy of the publisher) is a bizarre novella, a drifting story told by a female narrator. Moving back and forth in time, she recounts small events from her life, brief encounters or relationships with old friends. What brings all these anecdotes together is a group of women who delight in wearing clothes of a certain colour.

The first part of the book, set in the French provinces, begins with an impending flood, but we soon go back to a sunny spring day, with the narrator noticing a woman standing up against a banana tree (a person the children in her car are unable to see). It’s only when she drives back later that she discovers the woman does exist, making the acquaintance of the green-clad Katia Depetiteville. A chat over coffee at the kitchen table ensues, yet:

“When, later, in the village, or waiting outside the school, I speak of the woman in green, people will answer, dumbfounded: Katia Depetiteville has been dead for ten years or more. And I won’t be surprised, having sensed it in advance.”

This is just the first of many unusual encounters with women who dress only in green…

Self-Portrait in Green is a bizarre, unsettling book, moving around swiftly in a manner designed to keep the reader on their toes. The confusion isn’t helped by the prominence of a narrator who gives some of herself, but not enough for the reader to fully identify, or sympathise, with her. All we get are brief glimpses of her life as she tries to make sense of the encounters she has with those close to her (or who used to be).

What stands out, of course, are the encounters with the mysterious women in green, people who drift in and out of her life without really making a mark. There’s Katia, for one, and the wife of a friend’s old partner – we even learn that the narrator’s mother has her own special tinge of green. They are all women with a certain je ne sais quoi, people who appeal but are to be avoided. Whether in Aquitaine, Paris or Burkina Faso, the narrator faces a constant struggle to understand what they want.

So, are the women a metaphor? Possibly – but for what? One suggestion is that they act as warnings and signposts. This is certainly the case with the narrator’s friend Jenny and her regrets regarding the past:

“How to fight it off, in the face of such a melancholy? Against melancholy, against regret, common sense and cynicism can do nothing. She regrets not what was, but what should have been, could have been, had she only made some other choice way back then, and she regrets the choice she made, the path of sorrow.”

The happiness of the woman in green occupying a place that could have been hers exacerbates the sadness of what might have been for Jenny, a woman whose life has slowly gone downhill.

However, these women can also be seen as people to emulate, examples of women who know WITMonth15what they want from life. They all exude a quiet confidence, leaving the narrator in no doubt as to their contentment, even when their material circumstances leave much to be desired. In fact, with the force of life so strong in them, even death fails to make their colours fade… One thing’s for sure, though – NDiaye’s book is a very female work.

As was the case with Three Strong Women, the writing in Self-Portrait in Green is excellent. NDiaye has a talent for description, drawing the reader into her story with scents of lilac and honeysuckle and sketches of living, breathing people:

“All the young women are in shorts and sandals. The sandals’ soles smack their heels with a certain resolute gaiety. What makes that sensual? Is it the slightly slack strap that lets the foot slip this way and that, and the heels slap the sole? Or is it the vision of unveiled legs? What makes it sensual, and must the legs be beautiful, must they be lustrous, smooth and long? Or is the beauty of legs, knees and ankles superfluous for the burgeoning, in the main street of this drowsy town, of an eroticism still enfeebled by winter?”

While this eye for detail is apparent throughout, NDiaye uses it best in allowing her narrator to wonder at the confidence and sensuality shown by the green women. There’s more than a hint of envy at times – perhaps it’s no coincidence that she sees these women in green…

If you like a story to follow a clear narrative arc, this might not be one for you. The lack of clarity from the narrator, the frequent scene changes and the swings in mood in some of the sections make it hard to know at times exactly where the writer is going with the story. This is not a book where you’ll decipher the secrets in one sitting (I’ll certainly need to revisit it at some point to see if I can make a little more sense of it second time around). Still, if you can tolerate a little ambiguity (even if you may never understand it fully), Self-Portrait in Green is a book you’ll probably enjoy. A warning, though – after reading this one, you’ll never see green clothes in the same light again ;)

Incredible memoir

How is this memoir not getting more reviews? I do not understand. I first read an excerpt in A PUBLIC SPACE and I was totally blown away by the writing and conceit. The memoir describes people living and dead, women of envy and deceit. Check this out: "Jenny's mother later confides to me that the hanged woman recently knocked on her door [...] She tells me the woman was very beautiful, lovelier and more luminous than before, and she smiled with great kindness and self-confidence. 'She did die though,' I say." NDiaye subverts the very conventions of what-a-memoir-can-do. Thank goodness. Most memoirs are a real snooze.

About the Author
Maine State Historian Thomas A. Desjardin is the author of several books on the Civil War and Maine history, including Stand Firm Ye Boys from Maine, Through a Howling Wilderness, and These Honored Dead. During the 1990s he served as archivist and historian at Gettysburg National Military Park. He later taught Civil War history at Bowdoin, the same Maine college where Joshua Chamberlain was a student, professor, and president. Desjardin was the historical advisor to actor Jeff Daniels for his role as Chamberlain in the films Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Desjardin and his work have been featured on the History Channel, A&E, the Discovery Channel, and PBS. He lives in Pittsfield, Maine.

Not advertised as such, but actually a 2014 reprint of 1999 edition. Very brief look at family, college, Civil War and post war life, Now outdated bibliography. Ok for someone not familiar with JLC, but compared with author's other works, not much
