About the Author
James grew up in South Africa and immigrated to Christchurch in Aotearoa several years ago, where he lives with his wonderful partner. He has been a writer since his early teens, and has written numerous screenplays and short stories for his own enjoyment. His professional career began with working in IT and he has since moved into healthcare. When he isn’t hard at work writing, he’ll either be seeking inner Zen at a Body Balance class or trying to satisfy his insatiable appetite for good film and television.

May not be for everyone

I pre-ordered this book because the blurb sounded intriguing. After reading the book I am both sad and disappointed. I perhaps don't have the right to be, since nothing in the books description implied to me there would be a HEA. (At least in regards to Todd and Kyle) I would have been ok with a book where Todd finally figured out what happened to Kyle, but to have him find him and lose him again was not what I was looking for. The implication of happier times for Todd in the future was not enough to balance the awful events. The author's note at the end explained why he wrote the book the way he did. I understand his position, but would not have read the book had I known.

Heartbreaking Love Story!!!!

In their freshman year of college is where Kyle and Todd meet. They fall for each other in the hottest sexual way and then they fall madly in love with each other. Kyle disappears and this completely devastates and crushes Todd's heart. Now jump 15 years later and Todd is a very successful psychiatrist but he leads a very lonely life. He has never gotten over his love for Kyle and how he vanished from his life.
I enjoyed very much how this novel was written in two parts. The first part is from Todd's POV on how he meets and falls madly in love with Kyle. These boys come from very different backgrounds to say the least. Kyle comes from a very religious family and he is kicked out of the home for being gay. Todd comes from a very loving and accepting family and gives him the strength to be who he actually is. So when they meet, sparks fly and they become the amazing couple that everyone loves. They plan a future of love, marriage and possibly kids and everything is going perfect for this beautiful loving couple. Now Kyle vanishes without a trace and leaves behind a broken hearted and a completely devastated Todd.
The second part finds Todd 15 years later. He is very successful and financially secure but there is still a hole in his heart which he hasn't been able to fill. Then he meets Simon at a convention and now Todd thinks maybe his heart can be healed with Simon. Just as he was letting go of his past with Kyle and trying to move on, a dangerous patient arrives at the psychiatric hospital. This man has some brain damage and holds no memories of his past except for a few pieces here and there. Todd is very reluctant to treat him but he needs to know what happened 15 years ago in order to move on with his life with Simon. This is where the story gets so heartbreaking as Todd investigated what took Kyle away from him so many years ago. The answers are so shocking and heartbreaking as I found it ripping away at my heart. This story affected me in so many ways and the emotions that I went through reading it was just simply amazing. This author has written one of the most brilliant and heartfelt stories. I loved the writing style in this book, the characters he created and the heart wrenching angst was just so amazing. I loved this novel from page one to the very end! Will Todd find the true answers he is looking for and at what cost? Who will Todd end up with or will he be alone again? Can his relationship with Simon survive this? Will Todd and Kyle have the HEA they so desperately deserve? I highly recommend this beautiful story of love, acceptance, heartbreak, drama, intrigue and forgiveness.....Return To Me by James Oliver French!

Something different...

Return to Me is definitely a book you will either love or loathe and I say that only because this book is a little different and sometimes people don’t like change in their reading habits.
The first half of the book sets up Kyle and Todd’s story. I did like learning about their budding relationship and it had all the great trappings of a young, first love. At times I did feel details were skimmed over and I was told about their connection rather than being able to experience it for myself. But I was eager to read on because from the synopsis I knew something big was going to happen.
At 50% the book skips to 15 years later and Todd is very much a man with his life on hold. He never did get the answers he was searching for. It’s tricky to review the book without spoilers but I’ll try my best to do so. Kyle returns but not as the person Todd fell in love with, he’s been irrevocably altered. But Todd knows his Kyle is still in there, deep down inside, so he makes it his mission to help him.
What transpires next is unexpected to say the least. I don’t think it was a bad thing per se, but if you go into this book expecting a new adult romance then you may be left feeling unsatisfied. I’m not going to lie, I was more frustrated than upset when I reached the 90% mark. If this book is marketed as a mystery with a little love thrown in then I say great, but if it’s advertised as a love story with a twist then people may feel short-changed. I’m aware I’m speaking in riddles but once you read the story, my cryptic message will make more sense.
Return to Me is a change from my usual reads, and I picked it for exactly that purpose. It’s about one man’s journey through life. We get to experience his first true love and the affect it has on him throughout his later years. As I mentioned before, there were times when I yearned for more emotion, especially at the crux of the story. A major bomb was dropped and I felt it deserved more fanfare than what it got.
If you are looking for something different to read, then you might want to try this one. But I say go in with your eyes wide open and expect the unexpected. ~Ava
