Does Not Disappoint

I met the author at a book show recently and she sold me on reading her book. I bought the Kindle version and started my journey to becoming a fan of Karen Gallagher, the main character. Plenty of action, solid writing and a skilled writer who kept me engaged to keep reading to the very end. I live in Melbourne, Florida which is where the story is set, so I know the neighborhoods and the author described them to a tee. The story never dulls or drags, but has a great pace, excitement, intrigue and of course a tragic love story ... But Karen manages to move on and so, I'm now waiting for this author's next book to once again keep me up past my bedtime so I can know what happens next. Thank you for a great story... It did not disappoint.

During the past four years, he has been involved in lecturing on the special problems and needs of persons with spinal cord injuries. If I Could Ask You Anything is Ron Holland's encouraging story of the road to recovery and his adaptation to the life of a quadriplegic. His experiences in the hospital, his subsequent graduation from high school and enrollment in college, and his encounters with those who have aided him in his recovery are recounted with a feeling only one who has been there and back can summon.
Mr. Holland provides the reader with a question and answer section that enables those outside the real m of the handicapped to better relate to their fellow human beings.
He reveals his own personal experiences about spinal-cord injuries in answering such questions as "How do you feel about your accident?," "How can I help someone who has suffered a spinal-cord injury?," and "Can people with spinal -cord injuries have sex?"
Mr. Holland's purpose throughout is to promote the rights and privileges of all disabled people. He directs his efforts toward establishing an understanding of the special feelings and sympathies of the physically handicapped individual. In dispelling many of the myths and fallacies surrounding the lives of the disabled, the author succeeds quite well in advancing the quadriplegic's case. Learn Italian language within a short time frame and very easily.

This guidebook is fantastic and useful. By the help of this book I have come to know more about the Italian language. My uncle lived in Italy and next month I will go to his house and hope will stay couples of months. For that reason last few months I was searching for the perfect guidebook to learn Italian language. Suddenly, my cousin suggested me this book last week and this really amazing book. By reading this book I am fully satisfied and this book really helped me to learn this language very quickly. By reading this book I have learned Italian words and phrases. By reading this book I have understood about what is being said to me. Overall, this book fulfilled my satisfaction and by reading his book I am impressed enough.

Cinque! Good and Informative!

Pizza, Spaghetti and Romance, these things come to mind when I think of Italy. I plan to travel to this magnificent country as soon as I am able and this book is very helpful in preparing me for that future trip. The Author has been very helpful and kind in providing not just a dictionary-like guide to the Italian Language but including a brief History of how the language came about. I give this book five stars for being helpful and informative.

Finally, an easy book to understand and learn the romantic language of Italy. This book contains everyday words, short conversations like introduction or asking for directions and the cheat sheet for fast learning. This book is definitely another excellent work by Luisa Wilkins!

Cutting edge technology?

I spent 14 years (between 5 and 18) on a small dairy farm in southern Wisconsin, doing almost everything from cleaning out manure to planting strawberry plants using a mule pulled tobacco planter to baling hay, and many other tasks. I've lived in large and small cities since then, but have never lost my love of farming. There is simply nothing like fresh corn boiled for a few seconds within a minute after it is picked and husked. And, one of my pumpkins got to 400 pounds four years ago, before the deer developed an unlikely love for pumpkin flesh.

This beautifully photographed book reflects the author's and photographer's love for farming, and reflects the new and innovative ways in which Americans are growing and selling food. They cover 16 different urban farms -- both the words and the pictures are inspiring. The book has inspired me to check out five urban farms in the New York City area, and a small farmer's market located on Madison Avenue near 40th Street, which handles the produce and meats raised in urban farms in and near New York City.

For most urban dwellers, visiting a working farm requires a journey into the countryside. But in a growing number of world capitals, a farm is just a short elevator ride away—on the roof.

In Singapore, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Montreal as well as several U.S. cities, farms have been built atop multistory buildings.

"Five years ago, there were virtually no rooftop farms," Steven Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, told National Geographic. "Now they are starting to appear across the globe."

Peck says that as fossil fuels become more expensive and the number of urban dwellers continues to rise, urban farming will help feed the population without increasing the cost and pollution of food transport.

Rooftop farming was born out of the green-roof movement, in which building owners partially or completely cover roofs with vegetation atop special waterproof membranes. Green roofs use plants and flowers to provide insulation, create a habitat for local wildlife, help control runoff, put more oxygen into the atmosphere—and provide a welcome, verdant break from urban drabness.

Rooftop farms take the green-roof concept a step further, with plots that provide fruits and vegetables for local residents and the chance for urban volunteers to become part-time farmers.

"There is nothing more rewarding than sitting down at the end of a good day of working with our hands, watching the sun set over a healthy, productive farm, and enjoying some freshly picked vegetables as a team," said Anastasia Cole Plakias, vice president and founding partner of Brooklyn Grange, the world's largest rooftop farm.

The grange covers 2.5 acres (one hectare) on two buildings in New York City. More than 50,000 pounds of organically cultivated produce are grown there annually, for sale to local restaurants and at the grange's own farm stand. Chicken coops and more than 30 beehives round out the urban farming experience.

Brooklyn Grange opened in 2010 after Ben Flanner, the grange's head farmer and president, spent a year developing a 6,000-square-foot (557-square-meter) pilot project. With the information from that experiment, he and his partners scaled up to 43,000 square feet (3,995 square meters).

"As we realized that we were able to grow quality food in this unique setting, we dove in and pursued the idea without hesitation," Flanner said. "Our hopes and expectations were to grow as much tasty produce as possible and figure out the scale necessary to make all of the production and finances work."

That spirit has helped the organization increase its employee base, product line, and revenue streams. Events are also held at the farm, and schoolchildren visit often.

Brooklyn Grange also provides a nice getaway for the residents of the buildings below. Each week the farm opens its doors for visits from the hundreds of tenants as well as employees. "Having a farm on a roof is not a normal thing, so the farms are definitely the topic of a lot of conversation, excitement, and questions amongst the neighbors," Flanner said.

Other cities are joining the rooftop-farm movement. Peck ranks Boston along with New York City as the nation's top locations for rooftop farming. Cole Plakias notes that Chicago has long been a leader in greening rooftops.

Like "Candy" for the Sustainable Grower

I saw this in the bookstore and started drooling, then saw the sticker price. Yikes. Happened to look on Amazon and saw a much lower price and could not resist.

Aside from being a very nice book, with great photgraphy, it is well written and engaging. It gave me a lot of ideas and more than a little inspiration.

I highly reccomend it for the coffee table or waiting room. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The historic 1540–1542 expedition of Captain-General Francisco Vasquez de Coronado is popularly remembered as a luckless party of exploration which wandered the American Southwest and then blundered onto the central Great Plains of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The expedition, as historian John M. Hutchins relates in Coronado’s Well-Equipped Army: The Spanish Invasion of the American Southwest, was a military force of about 1,500 individuals, made up of Spanish soldiers, Indian warrior allies, and camp followers. Despite the hopes for a peaceful conquest of new lands—including those of a legendary kingdom of Cibola—the expedition was obliged to fight a series of battles with the natives in present-day Sonora, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The final phase of the invasion was less warlike, as the members of the expedition searched the Great Plains in vain for a wealthy civilization called Quivira.While much has been written about the march of Coronado and his men, this is the first book to address the endeavor as a military campaign of potential conquest like those conducted by other conquistadors. This helps to explain many of the previously misunderstood activities of the expedition. In addition, new light is cast on the non-Spanish participants, including Mexican Indian allies and African retainers, as well as the important roles of women.

It's amazing how someone can write a book on a Spanish ...

It's amazing how someone can write a book on a Spanish explorer around Spanish-speaking lands without using original sources in Spanish. They are ALL English original works or translations. If you are looking for a very simple study for people who don't know anything about this subject, this is your book. If you have read other books on Coronado and other Spanish explorers, don't buy it. Hutchins is just a "summarizer" of other "summarizers" whose effort consists of repeating what many others have already said. A waste of time and money.

Linda [Lum DeBono] corralled the designers of Henry Glass Fabrics and they came up with projects and patterns for the book. Not only does it promote the fabric company, it also promotes each designer involved, individually. Wait until you hear this! All of the designers are donating the royalties of this book to the Red Cross! There are 15 projects included in the book, from super easy to some really beautiful patchwork patterns and projects. Of course, there is a mix of patterns in the book, pillows, pocketbooks, quilts, and don't forget the placemats. As a preface to each of the projects, the designers share their thoughts on color mixing, their inspiration, scale, variety, etc. So you get to know a small bit of the stuff that makes 'em tick. The patterns and writing are fairly standard and are color illustrated. The photography is nicely done... I think that the publisher, That Patchwork Place, did a really nice job for Henry Glass and I hope the book does well for the designers, Henry Glass, and the Red Cross. This book is jammed with adorable projects from a variety of designers. The talented women from Henry Glass Fabrics got together and put together a wonderful book filled with quilts that you will be drooling over! It was compiled by Linda Lum DeBono and... the designers are donating all of their royalties from the sale of this book to the Red Cross... What really impressed me with this book is the plethora of tips that the designers shared on how they use fabrics from their stash to create a new look. The information they provide is very useful and it really feels like you get to know them a little bit better also. With this collection, Linda Lum DeBono has compiled a very pleasing and diverse assortment of sewing projects from her fellow designers at Henry Glass and Co., the justly renowned fabric company. Rich use of pattern and colour is consistent throughout the book, despite the huge variations in style and technique, and the process of successful fabric choice and matching is the heart and soul of the book. In this way it is far more than just 15 lovely quilted projects to make, and also serves as a fascinating insight into the work of some top designers and a helpful guide to making your own harmonious fabric choices. There's a wonderful jumble of projects in here, from pillows and placemats to quilts and more, using a mix of patchwork and applique styles. A standout creation is hard to pick (which is why we suspect there are three on the cover alone!) but a personal favourite is Kim Diehl's sublime "Garden Bramble" the colours encapsulate all the joy of a crisp autumnal walk in the woods, and the quilting is very clever indeed. --Popular Patchwork, March 2015

Super fun new book with creative projects to show off beautiful fabrics, but also a way to help raise funds for the Red Cross

This is an excellent book for quilting and sewing enthusiasts of all levels. Packed full of fun projects, perfect for beginner through advanced levels, with easy to follow instructions and great visuals. Projects range from fun pillows, quilt caddy/bags, wallhangings to full size quilts. With all the fun projects this book is an excellent value, but even more special when you know all of the talented designers are donating their royalties from this book to the Red Cross.

And if you are like me, you have a hard time figuring out ...

Fourteen projects that range from quilts, wall hangings, place mats, pillows and a quilting caddy can be found in the pages of this book. And if you are like me, you have a hard time figuring out what fabric to put with what fabric.

These designers will walk you through how they think and pick out fabric. Then they will create a project with those fabrics. If they use templates, they are included at full size.

Each project has a blurb from the designer about how they fabric was chosen and then there is a paragraph or two that gives you a tip. The patterns are pretty standard in that cutting and material lists are included. Graphics are also included to help define the written instructions.

Each project is from a different designer. If you are wondering which designer has your type of project, this would be a good book to try as there are 14 of them to choose from. You can also learn a tip/trick from each one to add to your quilting knowledge.

If you get nothing else out of this book, you will have been exposed to a variety of fabric combinations. This just might spark an idea from your own fabrics that you wouldn’t have tried before.

Fantastic designer insights on how to coordinate fabric groups from your stash

This book incorporates projects from fifteen Henry Glass fabric designers, with a huge assortment of styles and techniques. You'll find applique, piecing, quilts, a sewing caddy, a pillow and an aromatherapy bag. Some of the projects have a modern feel, others are very traditional. What sets this book apart, however, is the page that comes after most of the project instructions. The designers explain ways to use the leftover fabrics (from a coordinated line), with other fabrics in your stash to create a new look. The tips are so insightful, I found myself skipping to each of these pages to try and absorb all the information at once. They even covered topics like blending traditional small prints (think Civil War reproduction fabrics) with batiks! It looks gorgeous in the book, I'm going to have to try out their tips on my own stash before I'll completely believe that possibility. All of the designers featured in this book donated their work so that the book's royalties could go straight to the Red Cross and victims of Hurricane Sandy.
