Definitely not for the timid...

It took me a while to buy this book and some of her other books, because until Sorceress Cagliastro I never worked with sigils. Honestly, I kind of had a school of thought that waffled between 1) Sigils are b.s. and 2) Sigils can be powerful. I have a new thought after working with just one of the sigils in 23 Sigils - sigils done in accordance to the science of Sorcery and treating them like mathematical equations (the way Sorceress Cagliastro teaches) ARE powerful.

Unlike her previous 25 Sigils book, which I also deeply respect, 23 Sigils is much more "selfish." This book is truly about indulging yourself and getting what you want without apologies. I look forward to continued work from this and other books by Sorceress Cagliastro.

This is my 5th Sorceress Cagliastro book. I love how only she has plainly put into text and visual format that which we already know..down in our blood and bones. I come from a family of practitioners. Generations deep of scientific minds. I appreciate how pure and obvious her words are. I love how she's implemented and taken this work to the next level. I admire that she's done so in public forum. I hope one day to take her classes to add to my own skills. Diatribes are necessary, and she's clearly perfected the art of removing the clutter and fluff. Well done.

About the Author
Mark Allen Baker is a former business executive (General Electric/Genigraphics Corporation, assistant to the president and CEO), author (fifteen books), historian and writer (over two hundred articles). A graduate of the State University of New York, with postgraduate work completed at MIT, RIT and George Washington University, his expertise has been referenced in numerous periodicals, including USA Today, Sports Illustrated and Money magazine. Following his 1997 book, Goldmine's Price Guide to Rock & Roll Memorabilia, he appeared as a co-host on the VH-1 series Rock Collectors. Baker has also been a featured speaker at many events, including the Hemingway Days Festival and Writers Conference in Key West, Florida. He may also be familiar to some as the former co-owner of Bleachers Restaurant & Sports Bar (Liverpool, New York). Acting as a historian for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Baker is the only individual who has been a volunteer, chairperson and sponsor of an Induction Weekend event, both inside and outside the village of Canastota. He has also published artwork, articles and books related to the museum. Baker turns his attention to the hardwood for a book about basketball to be published in the fall of 2010.

Huzzah, Huzzah, Huzzah and a final Huzzah!

The thoroughness, thoughtfulness and integrity of the author’s work shines from nearly every page of this work. His strong emphasis on the contribution of women during the Revolution will certainly secure his place among many readers, as will his select mix of Connecticut families. Even though names like Sarah Pierce, Lucretia Shaw, Samuel Peters, and even Tapping Reeve have fallen through the cracks of man history books, Baker decides to not only resurrect them, but place them at the vanguard of the state’s rich history. For this alone he should be praised. The black & white photography supplements the work perfectly and really adds to the richness of the work. I wish however that some of the plates would have been in color. I also wish, and perhaps its out of my own selfishness, that the work would have been longer. Still this is a strong and entertaining read and gets four huzzahs!

An engaging and intimate portrait of the Connecticut families of the new nation. Thoroughly enjoyable in presentation and format, the author presents several post-revolution vignettes of these remarkable "freedom families" from one of Geo. Washington's closest advisers, David Humphries to the Litchfield Academy. There is a lot here for either casual reader or researcher. The Great Experiment so bravely sought by our forefathers comes to fruition as we see the nation expand and read these fully researched biographies. From politicians, doctors, clergymen, writers, lawyers and early social activists, Connecticut provided a wealth of remarkable citizens that formed our early history. The photos alone and abundant concise information make this a must read.
Highly recommended!

Those who had decoded and seen the Japanese communications in early December 1941 would not be surprised when they heard about an attack on December 7, 1941. They would, however, be astonished when they heard where that attack took place. Posted on the other side of the world, it was early on the morning of December 8 in the Philippines when American general Douglas MacArthur received news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor hours earlier. With that, it could only be a matter of time before the Japanese attacked the Philippines.

Although MacArthur and Allied forces tried to hold out, they could only fight a delaying action, and the Japanese managed to subdue all resistance by the spring of 1942. However, in the aftermath of Japan’s successful invasion, as the nation’s military strategists began preparations for the next phase of military actions in the theater, their forces had to deal with a critical logistical problem they had not foreseen. The Japanese had to deal with large numbers of Filipino and American soldiers who had surrendered after a lengthy defense in the Bataan peninsula, but they were not prepared for so many prisoners of war because their own military philosophy emphasized rigid discipline and fighting until the end. They could not imagine a situation in which Japanese soldiers would willingly surrender, so they assumed that no other combatants would do so either.

On the night of March 12, 1942, MacArthur, his family and closest advisors were smuggled out of Corregidor on PT boats. From there they surged across the black ocean to Mindanao and were picked up by American B-17 bombers. They stealthily flew to northern Australia, a dangerous flight over Japanese-held territory, during which MacArthur casually remarked to General Sutherland, “It was close; but that's the way it is in war. You win or lose, live or die, and the difference is just an eyelash.” At Adelaide on March 18, 1942 that MacArthur met the assembled press and told them, “I came through and I shall return.” The words would go down in history, and MacArthur would eventually fulfill the vow.

Before then, however, prisoners had to contend with the infamous Bataan Death March. Japanese plans to move the POWs from Bataan to prisoner camps in the interior of Luzon estimated that 40,000 American and Filipino soldiers would need to be transported out of the peninsula, but there were actually 78,000 POWs at Bataan, consisting of 66,000 Filipinos and 12,000 Americans. These soldiers were also suffering from disease and malnutrition after fighting on less than 1,000 calories per day toward the end of their defense of Bataan. In essence, the Japanese not only miscalculated the size of the force they would need to move, they also failed to realize the condition of the soldiers as well.

Although the Bataan Death March would become synonymous with brutality and are still widely viewed as an atrocity, Japanese plans called for an orderly removal of the prisoners by foot, truck and rail into central Luzon so that they could quickly use Bataan as a launching point to attack the island of Corregidor, thus clearing the entrance to Manila Bay and gaining a key location for naval operations in the Pacific. In fact, Japanese plans did not call for any sort of brutality toward the prisoners; orders coming down from military leaders described potential interactions between Japanese soldiers and POWs as occurring with a “friendly spirit.”

Detailed account of the doomed struggle of the Allies in the Philippines (including five months at Bataan) circa 1941-942. Includes numerous quality photos such as the stunning pic of the Japanese tank crew at the start. For a campaign ending in failure I learned that it accomplished at least two things in demonstrating what air superiority can accomplish and how you can loose a battle yet win the war if only by holding out for as long as possible at one site so as to hurt your opponent months later elsewhere. Also includes a longer section on the Death March of Bataan (which I had read about earlier so I was able to skim thru this account given its' enhanced treatment in that offering). I found this book a very good tribute to our fallen heroes. Well done!

The Bataan Death March was one of the saddest chapter in Philippine and American history, and I still wonder why Japanese find it hard to acknowledge and apologize for the atrocities that their WW II soldiers commited against helpless Filipino and American soldiers who already surrendered not to mention the Filipino civilians.

Historically inaccurate. Its account of Clark field operations on Dec 8 and then the claim of the sinking of the IJN Battleship Haruna by the Army Air Corps early in the Philippines campaign are not even close to factual. I quit reading at that point.

Great puzzles for any age!

We have Kid's Krostics puzzles off at the coffee shop where I work at and we never have enough of them! The kids love them and I see plenty of adults grabbing a puzzle to go with their cup of coffee. I even sneak a puzzle from time to time on my breaks and I love them because they are finally puzzles that I can solve!

What a fantastic puzzle book for kids. I bought these for children of friends that were visiting and they were HOOKED on it almost instantly.

This book is really educational but in a fun way - your kids won't even realise that they are improving their vocabulary and reasoning skills. It is presented in a fun and engaging way and once they get into it they won't stop. We had kids having competitions to see who could solve the puzzles the quickest, who could find the weirdest or most interesting fact, or in the case of the boys it was a great set of puzzles where they saw themselves as secret code-breakers. Really entertaining and, most importantly, really educational.

I need to buy more to keep all visiting children quiet!!!

It's about time somebody wrote acrostic puzzles for kids, and these are simply fantastic. A great teaching/learning tool, and fun for adults as well as the younger crowd. Complete with instructions for solving. Highly recommended!

Want to Pop the Question? Then Get This Book Right Away

I bought this book to give to a young man who is ready to pop the question to his girlfriend, but I couldn't resist taking a look myself first, and I'm glad that I did.

You can impress her by mentioning some of the history of wedding rings that you'll read about in this book. And you'll be able to talk to a jeweler without looking like a total jerk because you will have learned wedding ring terminology in this book.

This book also has lots of photos of engagement rings and wedding bands so that you can get some ideas before you head to the jewelry story. You may even want to bring the book along to show the jeweler photos of the kind of ring you're interested in. After all, a picture is worth ... as they say.

Wedding is a very amazing and informative book through which it is easy for me to express my feelings to my partner. This book is comprised of so many interesting things; I can impress my boyfriend by mentioning some the history of wedding rings that I will read about in this book. The jewelers are unable to make me fool because I have learned the terminology of the book about the jewelry. I highly recommend this book to those who feel a deep connection ...

I just finished the book this morning. It continues where his last book,Tails and Tribulations, left off. The book tells of the difficulties they had finding a new home for their dogs and how eventually they were able to find an ideal location. By the end of the book the pack has increased to over 40 dogs and all are doing well.

The books spiritual side will make you look at and examine some of your own beliefs.

I highly recommend this book to those who feel a deep connection to the animals in their lives. However reading the first 2 books in the series is recommended as the information in those books will make reading this one more enjoyable.

I was so excited to hear the 3rd book in the "Some Dogs are Angels" series was ready, and it was definitely worth the wait! The story of this family and how everything happened is incredible! If you're someone who is searching for answers about the meaning and purpose of life, then i highly recommend reading these books. Ive read through each of them several times and learn something new each time. Buy them, you won't be disappointed!

Birmingham, Alabama native, Lawayne Orlando Childrey is a national Edward R. Murrow award winning journalist. He has also won numerous Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters awards. In 2014 the Alabama Community College System named Childrey as one of its most outstanding alumnus in the institutions fifty year history. As a result, the ACCS awarded a $5,000 scholarship in Childrey's name to a deserving Alabama high school senior. During the same year, Childrey was named as alumnus of the year for Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. The finest non-fiction work of 2014 offers more than inspiration

Lawayne Childrey. Remember this name. Lawayne Childrey. I met Lawayne at a recent book signing event. We spoke, he handed me his book. "What's it about?" I asked. "A gay black man from the south survives a crack addiction and HIV diagnosis to become a respected journalist."

"Wow," was my first and simple reaction. And then I read his book. "Wow" doesn't begin to cover it. Lawayne is a survivor who has been through considerably more than his description. A tragic house fire occurred early in his journey ... resulting many years later in a transformation: A remarkable, personal transformation from troubled child and adult to a man I'm convinced has a future inspiring and motivating others.

Someone close to me was recently having some difficulties of her own. I asked her to read "Peeling Back the Layers" to place her own issues in perspective. She could not put it down.

But the question remains, "Is this a good book?" The answer is, a thousand times, yes. "Peeling Back the Layers" takes a mostly sequential view of Lawayne's life, including his eventual spiritual re-awakening. The book may be taken as "religious" by some and that's okay. For those of us who are not religious, Lawayne's spirituality and belief does not - and I have to stress this - make this book impertinent. Quite the contrary. This book is therapy for anyone who needs it, and a re-affirmation for all that hope is never lost.

And that's about the strongest message there is. This is the finest non-fiction release of last year and, so far, my favorite non-fiction of 2015 as well.

Great Book!

I felt like I was reading a novel by the late, great E. Lynn Harris. The openness and vulnerability used to relay the story makes this book a must read. It gives inspiration that you can overcome any adversity through faith in God. My favorite quote from the book is "Whenever God gives you something to do, he'll give you everything you need to do it. All we have to do is put our faith into action." Those are words to live by, regardless of your calling in life.

AWESOME, POWERFUL READ!!

"Peeling Back the Layers: A Story of Trauma, Grace and Triumph," aside from the Bible, is the most inspirational, transformational, and motivational book I have ever read. I could not stop reading until I got to the end!! LaWayne, the author, literally takes you inside the mind and the world of a person who has faced not just one traumatic experience but a plethora of life challenges that could have negatively affected his perspective on life. Yet he has taken his pain and turned it into his power, his tragedies into triumphs. I know this book will impact the lives of countless individuals. I plan to use it during several of my seminar sessions and even in my sermons. Thank you, LaWayne, for sharing YOU to make a better US! God bless!!
