From 1906 through the beginning of television, Sophie Tucker and her bawdy, brash, and risqué songs paved the way for performers such as West, Monroe, Midler, Cher, Madonna, and Gaga.

“Sophie was like the Forrest Gump of the first half of the 1900s,” says co-author Susan Ecker. “She was close friends with seven presidents, King George VI, young Queen Elizabeth, Chaplin, J. Edgar, Capone, Garland, Jerry Lewis, Sinatra and every other notable of her era.”

Tucker tried to get her story published for nine years, without success. Undaunted, Sophie hired half a dozen ghostwriters, but she still had no takers for her no holds barred autobiography. Eventually, Doubleday published a sanitized version in 1945.

“After immersing ourselves in Sophie’s papers and surviving friends,” says co-author Lloyd Ecker, “this initial volume is what should have been the actual autobiography of Tucker.”

Though she obsessively documented her life, Sophie loved to exaggerate for dramatic effect. Over the years, she told multiple versions of each important event. At the end, not even Sophie knew the difference between truth and tall tale.

“This volume is 85% fact,” Lloyd explains. “The other 15% …who knows?”

About the Author
In 1973, Ithaca College students Susan Denner and Lloyd Ecker went on their first date to see an up-and-coming new singer named Bette Midler. Over the course of the evening, the couple fell in love with the Divine Miss M., her Sophie Tucker jokes, and each other.

Over the last forty years, the Eckers got married and had three children, and developed Babytobee. The sale of that business in 2006 allowed Sue and Lloyd to pursue their passion for bringing Sophie Tucker’s life to the page, stage, and screen.

With this book, the first in a trilogy about Sophie’s life, and a documentary already under their belts, the Eckers now intend to take Sophie's story to Broadway with a musical, to Hollywood with a film version of that musical, and to the small screen in a long running television drama based on her unbelievable sixty-year showbiz career.

First book in a fictionalized memoir trilogy about Sophie Tucker.

I have heard general information about Sophie Tucker as long as I can remember, but I realized when I saw this book was available that I didn't really know anything at all about her. This was my opportunity to find out what Tucker was really like back during the early 1900s when entertaining had to be an inner calling because it was so difficult to get ahead in the industry.

These authors have taken information from a biography published in 1945 by Doubleday and augmented it with further facts, photographs, and memorabilia they discovered in their research of the life of Sophie Tucker. The 1945 biography was a scrubbed clean version which probably doesn't represent the subject person very well. I'm sure this fictional memoir comes closer to showing what Sophie Tucker herself and the times she climbed the ladder to be a superstar in the entertainment industry were really like. If you have any interest in Sophie Tucker, this endeavor will supply you with all the who's and what's that got her moving to stardom. Unfortunately this isn't the complete story of Sophie Tucker since it is the first book of a proposed trilogy. The authors also plan a Sophie Tucker Broadway musical, a movie musical, and a television show as well as the documentary film they have already made.

For me, this first segment of the fictional memoir has been enough to satisfy my curiosity about Sophie Tucker.

Not bad, not good, but not bad.

The authors, a husband and wife who discovered Sophie Tucker when they went to Bette Midler concert in the early 70's, are retired with a lot of time on their hands. So much time, that they utilized Sophie Tucker's personal scrapbooks (kept over a 50 year show business career) and used them as the basis for this fictionalized biography of the great Miss Tucker. It is surprising how little time they spend on her career and how much more time they give to her backstory, particularly that of her parents. While some of it is interesting, they are not skilled enough writers to give the mountain of bio material any life. The pictures are gorgeous however, and there are some fun nuggets here and there, but really, the autobiography that Sophie wrote in the 1940's (and mentioned with much derision in this book) was much more entertaining and certainly had more information about Sophie's career, which is after all, the best reason to read a book about this long forgotten but much loved entertainer.

Interesting, weirdly fictional but based on true events, recommended for Tucker fans

Sophie Tucker was undoubtably a fascinating person. She seemed to know anyone who was anyone... from Al Pacino to Arthur Conan Doyle to ... well, herself! And this fictional memoir seemed intriguing. I didn't know much about Tucker going into it -- more a recognition of the name than anything else. But I thought it sounded intriguing... a murder mystery, an insider's look at early Hollywood (or, at least, earlier...), the world of Vaudeville.... ok, sign me up!

And... it delivered. to some degree. So, fictional memoir. What was I expecting? I don't know, something more akin to Devil in the White City, I guess... a sort of novelization of real events. An adding of thoughts and emotions -- a researcher's best guess -- and maybe that's what this was. But it seemed a lot more fictional than that. It *felt* like someone was creating a whole persona for a real person. Which just felt weird. It felt like someone had decided THIS must be Sophie Tucker's *real* personality -- her behind-the-scenes personality. And.... it was unsettling to me.

It felt surface. It felt false. It felt over-simplified. Like, rather two-dimensional. And, I understand the authors did an inordinate amount of research, and had scrapbooks and many items of Sophie's own words to pull from... so perhaps Sophie was really just a two-dimensional person? Seems far-fetched. Much more far-fetched than the so-called "life and times of Sophie Tucker."

And that was my other complaint. Eyebrow-raising, inward gasping, behind-the-scenes reveals? meh. I get that this was a long time ago, and our standards are different now... but it still felt like this fictional character was going from "hey hey, listen to this CRaaaaay-zee story about me!" to yet another and another... nothing felt organic or ... well, real.

Buuut.... It was Interesting. It was somewhat satisfying to read about that time from a so-called insider's perspective. It was ok. I didn't love Sophie; I didn't hate her. I didn't really feel that particularly strongly about anyone except for her first husband.

As for the others... were they husbands? It felt like a lot was left out. How did she meet her 3rd husband? What happened? How did they break? What about the 2nd .... how did that become, er, formal? (did I just miss that altogether?) So yeah, it was the organization. The organization needed work. And as a result, the story suffered.

But it was ok. And if you're really interested in Sophie Tucker's life, from an arguably inside perspective... check it out. The memoir is pretty consistent from beginning to end, so if you don't like the first few chapters, then you won't like it. If you do, you will.

Overall, three of five stars.

Truly dreadful

I note that the 5 star reviews are written by 2 individuals who have never written a review in their lives. Seems suspiciously like friends and family to me. The book is badly written, badly edited, badly punctuated and badly formatted. Nothing to recommend it so I gave up after a short while.

Changes is about a young girl looking for love. She's trusting, naïve, and want to be loved unconditionally. Perhaps Kelly is seeking the love and validation she wants to receive from her Father. Kelly is smart. Like a lot of teenagers, she could benefit greatly from a good Mentor at an early age to make her dreams come true but with less anguish and pain. Kelly's faith and strong will is what brought her through.

Enjoy the Capstone (and other HBCU) Experience

The series of essays poignantly describes the Black college experience enjoyed by my peers in the 1980s, before (a few stories from the 60s), and beyond. This should be read by students considering an HBCU institution and alumni wishing to compare their experience with the essayists, like me (Howard 1985).

This is an excellent book that gives the relevance of the value of the Historically Black College and University. Each essay provides the reader and future students the opportunity to learn about some of the most prestigious HBCUs. I highly recommend it.

Yet Another Well Done Zoe Mystery

The latest book in the Zoe Donovan series. Kathi once again proves her talent with a story and with running several plotlines at one time. This book advances Zoe's discovery of both who she is and what she wants from life. If you followed the series from the beginning you know a big part of the story is Zoe coming to terms with being abandoned by her mother at birth and as the series progresses the return of her mother into her life. This book also give a bit more of the history of Ashton Falls and you get a glimpse Zoe beginning to understand her place in the community. Then of course there is the mystery which is a pretty good one and as usual has Kathi with her hand on the pulse of contemporary society. You are also in for a twist in the relationship of Zoe's two best friends. The finale of this book is the lead in to the next Zoe Mystery, Alaskan Alliance.

Like I have stated before it is not necessary to read these in order but I think you will enjoy them more if you do. If you are new to Zoe and her friends Kathi does offer some boxed sets. Just go ahead and get them all. Once you are hooked on Zoe you will thank me. Binge reading is encouraged.

Christmas Cozy-good, fast-paced, lots happening...

One thing about Kathi, she keeps you busy in her stories. There's not just a mystery, there's the interaction between the characters, too.

Zoe is helping her friend, Levi, with the Ashton Falls High School Christmas tree lot, when she and her dog, Charlie, find the high school history teacher murdered. As Zoe helps local law enforcement search through the clues, she finds unusual information about the teacher...and about others, at the school.

In the midst of this, Zoe and her fiance, Zak, are hosting two children for Christmas, she is running a business and helping her friend, Ellie, work through some issues.

The story is fast-paced and, in the end, the murderer was not who I suspected.

Plus, you are left wondering about where relationships are going, in the story? It's a good thing Kathi releases her books quickly (and doesn't make us wait a year, to find out what happens next)!

The recipes, at the end of the book, play a part in Christmas Cozy, too. Be sure to check them out.

Another Magical Ashton Falls Christmas Marked By Murder

The holidays are always magical in Ashton Falls. This is a town built on tradition and steeped with history.
In this 11th Zoe Donovan novel we get to appreciate some of both.
What makes Christmas even more enjoyable? Of course snow and children!

Zoe, Ellie and Levi have been best friends forever. Whatever one of them gets involved with, the other two are sure to lend a hand. Levi is being "punished" by Principal Lame for not having completed enough adjunct hours.
He puts Levi in charge of overseeing the Christmas tree sales lot which is a school fundraiser.
Fortunately Levi, being the football coach, is popular among the students, so his team, the cheerleaders, and his friends all pitch in to help make the tree lot a success. There are lights, music, refreshments and even Santa on a sleigh, along with temporary volunteer elves. It looks so good the school newspaper counselor comes out to take photos and decides she will make it a full spread.

What ends up being the news headline is that the teacher, Mrs. Jolly, is murdered on the tree lot one night.
It appears that Levi is being framed for the murder. In looking for clues to help clear her friend, Zoe discovers that not much is known about poor Mrs. Jolly. She led a very quiet life, kept to herself, and enjoyed doing good for others. Still, no one knew much about her and had no idea why anyone would want her dead.

As Zoe and her colorful townspeople friends try to figure out a motive for Mrs. Jolly's murder, Christmas is coming closer day by day. There is a town holiday festival to attend and other social gatherings. Relationship issues need some attention. Zoe's fiance, Zak, has volunteered to host 9 year old Scooter during holiday vacation while his parents are away for work. Scooter brings along Alex, a school friend whose parents are also away. She is a delightful surprise who seems much more mature than her 9 years. It is heartwarming when we do see her act as a child and get excited about childlike things. It is also through Alex and a found diary in the attic that we learn more about the history of Ashton Falls.

Even grouchy sheriff Salinger seems to have a little bit of holiday spirit as he grumblingly shares information with Zoe. I had to smile at their exchange where Zoe explains how it will work out with information sharing.

I enjoy all of the novels in this series. I do think you'll have a better understanding of this one if you have read #10 before this, Turkeys, Tuxes, and Tabbies, but it can be read as a stand alone novel.
And the ending definitely sets us up for the next in the series, Alaskan Alliance.

Because these Italian allies had the arms, training and military systems of the Roman army which they usually fought alongside, all Rome's usual military advantages were nullified. This brought the war down to a clash of generals, with the Roman rivals Gaius Marius and Cornelius Sulla spending almost as much time in political intrigue as combat with the enemy. The Italian leaders had to manage an equally fractious coalition of peoples. Some tribes sought negotiation with Rome, and others would settle for nothing less than the total extermination of the city and its people.
The interplay of personalities (the young Cicero, Cato, and Pompey were also protagonists); high-stakes politics and full-scale warfare combine with assassination; personal sacrifice and desperate measures (such as raising an army of freed slaves) to make for a taut, fast-paced tale.

Mostly well done but no bibliography

Having just reviewed another – very scholarly – book on the same topic, I was curious to compare this one to it. Philip Matyszak’s production is clearly targeted at the so-called “general reader”. First of all, it sells at a fractious of the price of the more scholarly version. Second, it is a bit shorter. Third, it is also easier to read.

One advantage that this book has is to place the little known Social War into its context. This was a relatively short but very hard and cruel war that pitted Rome against many – but not all – of its Italic allies, with the overwhelming majority of the Latin allies remaining faithful to Rome. As the author shows, the tension had been building up for decades, or even generations, ever since the end of the Second Punic War. The author also shows rather well the different stages of the build-up, including the failed land reforms of the Gracchi brothers during the second century BC, and the growing aspirations of what were essentially second-class citizens to become Roman ones, fully benefit from the protection of Roman law and become able to take part in the election of magistrates.

The author makes a good job of showing why and how the conservative Roman senatorial elites did their utmost to prevent the allies from becoming full citizens. It also provides the reader with many insights into the murky and increasingly violent Roman politics, with the issues of land reform and of extending Roman citizenship increasingly taking centre stage. The book contains a good summary on the state of Italy at the time, of the various regimes applicable, and of the aspirations of the Latin-speaking populations and of the Italians. The failed reforms of Livius Drusus, the last Roman aristocrat to have tried to use these issues for his own advantage was the catalyst which started the storm although, as the author shows very well, the Italics leaders were plotting their insurrection well before.

The book also shows rather well the hard fighting and campaigning that took place, including a good number of initial defeats for the Romans. It also shows how these little by little got the upper hand, how they managed to prevent any more allies from defecting and rebelling and how they finally turned the tide and won militarily by essentially giving in politically. The allies and Latins were progressively granted Roman citizenship as a result, but distributed in the various colleges/voting tribes in such a way that they would not become a majority by themselves.

However, this book is also more than strictly about the Social War. Under the somewhat flimsy pretext that there were some diehard insurgents – especially among the Samnites - which held out well after 88 BC and which took part in the Civil War opposing Marius, his son and his associates and supporters against Sulla and his, the book only stops with Sulla’s death. It concludes that, by that time, the Republic was already dying. It was, starting with Marius and Sulla, to become increasingly dominated by strongmen backed by their armies made of Roman citizens and includes a number of similar developments which may remind some readers of the other excellent book written by Gareth Sampson also in the Pen & Sword collection (The Collapse of Rome: Marius, Sulla and the First Civil War) but centred on the conflict between the partisans of the two generals.

I did, however, have two main reservations about this book.

One is a tendency to simplify or perhaps even over-simplify at times to the extent that the statements become almost incorrect. For instance, Polybius, the Greek (Achaean) historian who remained a hostage and a protégé of the Scipio clan for so long is presented as a “diplomat” and a “soldier”. Given his age when he was handed over as hostage, he was too young to have become either one or the other. There is a handful of other such simplifications where the author has tried to “cut corners” and not always with the best results. To some extent, these kind of glitches are part of the “price to pay” for presenting a condensed overview of the events and their causes and consequences on conditions that they do not end up by becoming factually incorrect.

The second reservation is that this book, much to my surprise does NOT include a bibliography, which is something that I find very difficult to accept, especially for this kind of book, since it prevents any interested reader from investigating the topic any further. This is particularly a pity in this case, given this specific and little-known topic. Four stars.

A Timely History

This is an excellent and concise history of one of the turning points in Roman history: the crisis that arose in the late Republic in which the failure of Roman political institutions to accommodate the aspirations of allied communities throughout Italy to full citizenship produced a bloody revolt that threatened the Roman state. This episode- the Social War- has received little attention from surviving contemporary histories, but is critical to understanding the evolution of the Roman Empire. The author provides a readable and scholarly account of the crisis, its roots in the failure of Gracchi reforms, and its conclusion in the dictatorship of Sulla. This book filled a critical gap in my Roman History library, with a thoughtful and detailed speculation on how this forgotten war was prosecuted, with great insight into the perspective of the losers- who by confronting Rome ultimately gained full membership in the world's greatest empire.

Well worth reading even if you're no expert

This splendid book convincingly argues that the Roman Republic fell a generation before Caesar crossed the Rubicon. It makes a case for the destructive importance of the Social Wars of 90 BC and the battles between the forces of Marius and Sulla.

I am no expert on Roman history; I found the book readable, clear, and convincing. The odd nature of the Roman republic simply could not cope with its greater and greater size. Instead of extending Roman citizenship to the Italians who fought its wars, the Senate resisted the idea and brought in a series of calamities, resulting in the end of the Republic.

I learned from the book, but I also enjoyed it.
