Bobbi Junior writes and speaks about caregiving, drawing from two life-altering experiences-a devastating accident which left her teenage daughter paralyzed, and her mother's journey with dementia. Encouragement for Any Caregiver

The Reluctant Caregiver by Bobbi Junior
What does a woman do when her 90-year-old mother —who has been estranged from her over the years— develops dementia and urgently needs help? Bobbi Junior, the author of The Reluctant Caregiver, finds herself in that position. Her mother is gradually losing her ability to reason and live on her own. The journey ahead is far beyond Bobbi’s ability to cope, so she turns to the Lord. In her book, her own narration of the situation is interspersed with intensely personal prayers as she works through each new situation with assistance from the Lord. Her mother can be sweet and cooperative and in an instant turn against her and berate her. Being her mother’s caregiver is a thankless job, but Bobbie knows she’s the only one who can do it. She turns to her brother for help, which he willingly gives, but unfortunately, he lives five hours away. Each chapter focuses on a new development in the downward spiral in her mother’s life as she loses more and more of her independence. Gradually her mother comes to the point where her speech no longer makes sense and she cannot live on her own.
Told with grace and humour, Bobbi’s story is one taking place more and more in today’s society. People find themselves in the sandwich generation where they are caring for their own parents and their children at the same time. The mother of a quadriplegic daughter, Bobbi has already been a caregiver. This book is helpful to anyone finding themselves in a caregiver position, no matter what the reason. Personally, I have been a caregiver for my husband and found the book helpful. Sensitive and Respectful - Highly Recommended

The Reluctant Caregiver by Bobbi Junior is a sensitive, true account of the struggles faced when dealing with an aging parent. Confusion, anger and misplaced accusations characterize her mother’s increasing dementia, compounded by a less than ideal relationship and a past riddled with pain. With gentleness and sensitivity, Bobbi describes their journey into uncharted emotional and psychological waters. Above all, this is a book about relying on God’s grace and guidance. It is a thought provoking read, shedding light on the fear experienced by those suffering from dementia, yet offering a gentle and respectful example to help those faced with this reality. The book really struck a chord with me since I have had to deal with similar situations.

How To Live in the Middle

I've been a part of the sandwich generation. It's not easy. Bobbi has given us a glimpse into the struggles of dealing with a needy parent with dementia while dealing with adult children too. I love her tenderhearted manner in working through finding the best place for her mom to live while still giving her mom as sense of decision making. I like looking at how she struggled through her own feelings of wanting to control but working hard to let her mom keep her independence. And I love how she shows us how to talk with God on an on-going basis to keep peace in everyone's heart. Well written. Fascinating. A page turner.
