Help your kids improve their writing and reduce their anxiety about essays

This book is a gift to parents who don't quite know how to help their kids improve their writing skills. It's a quick read with easily digestible bites of information that can reduce the stress associated with writing essays. It organizes the process into logical steps that even a student with attention issues can "get." As the mother of a 16-y-o with ADHD, I believe this book will be a hugely helpful tool as she faces the gauntlet of college essays. Of special note are the "secret weapons" provided in the book -- things like "watch for keywords" and the "power of examples." When explaining how to conclude an essay, the author cautions against rehashing or restating what has already been written, but to provide something fresh, something new, a conclusion or thought that may surprise the reader. It's simple, but it's genius. I hope this book helps your family, too.

Because my daughter isn't a good writer and struggles with essays in English and World Affairs, I took a look at this book based on a referral from a family friend. This author takes the mystery out of writing a strong essay with easy-to-remember prompts. It is literally a road map to success and it isn't intimidating or complicated -- it's totally logical and straightforward. Highly recommend.

Loved it!

Loved it!!! Fluidly written and an excellent read. Page to page, chapter to chapter the story keeps you hooked and anticipating the next event. I was not ready to leave the characters at the end....sequel?

This is not "the end"...Brilliant, Billy Jolie!

Billy Jolie has done it again! The Tear Collectors was absolutely amazing! I felt as if I was there at Crystal Lake with Blaze, Brendan, and Farrah throughout the entire book. The scenery was described so vividly. Each character was intimately and beautifully illustrated from chapter to chapter. This book got very 'real' with the reader. The deep dark corners of these character's minds are very real. The problems that they face in the book are a harsh reality to many men and women of literally all ages.
The Tear Collectors was absolutely wonderful. I always had to read just "one more chapter" before bed! Billy's writing is truly beautiful and poetic. I can't wait to see what's next!!

An emotional journey...

I was a huge fan of the author's first novel, The Lust Garden, so I was very excited to read this story. It should be known that the two books are not connected and do not follow the same characters. The Tear Collectors did not disappoint! Jolie’s writing is stronger, more immersive, and captivating. The book follows three characters, Farrah, Brendan, and Blaze, as they spend the summer at a lake in Upstate NY. Each character intertwines with the other in unexpected ways tying them all together.

It was one of those books that I pretty much inhaled in one sitting and made me get all cranky whenever someone tried to interrupt me. Farrah, Brendan, and Blaze have a connection that becomes evident instantly. The characters are so real and expertly created that they practically jump off the page! My heart really broke for Farrah and Brendan. They both face tough adversaries. I have to admit, I cried reading some of the scenes involving Brendan and his father. What a powerful dynamic!

Farrah, like so many young girls, is suffering from body dysmorphia. This is where Jolie’s writing really sings. It’s easy to give a character a disease like this, but what Jolie does is bring you into it, so much so that as a reader you really get inside Farrah’s head. I don’t want to say how he does it. I think his readers should experience Farrah on their own, unspoiled. It’s some wild stuff!

The way the author described Crystal Lake ... It felt as if I was sitting at "The Rocks" overlooking the precipice with these kids. He describes the North Country with such perfection. You can tell he either lived here or did extensive research.

The story is funny at times, but will also pull the rug out from under you in a heartbeat with its twists. I always love when a book throws curve balls that I didn't see coming. Its got this really easy-to-read, yet dark angst feel to it!

Oh, and you will totally root for Blaze - the charming redhead with the sexy half-smile! Swoon!

The emotional journey of The Tear Collectors will stick with you long after that last page is read. It is a statement piece on what it is to be young, what it means to be human.

Pretty Things for Nice People is a delightful memoir and behind-the-scenes view of what is arguably the most respected and influential firm of artisans who worked in twentieth century New York City. Pretty Things is written by one of the nicest people of all, Joseph Fiebiger, who took the reins of his family's metalworking company in the late sixties. In this book Fiebiger uses a breezy, accessible tone to lead the reader through a candid, and often witty, tour of a sampling of projects that include major restorations of public buildings and original masterpieces, rendered on both the colossal and domestic scale. The journey begins with a small commission for an iron fence for a church in Brooklyn and culminates with massive restorations of two American treasures, The Statue of Liberty and the main building at Ellis Island, which has the largest copper roof in the country.

The "pretty things" part of the book offers insight into the technical challenges and the firm's often novel solutions. By way of explaining how the projects were completed by orchestrating teams of people with varied skills--be they in the form of design, metallurgy, or hands-on metalworking-- Fiebiger is unstinting in offering well-deserved praise for each person's valued contributions. However, Fiebiger is equally free in offering his perspective on some of the interpersonal difficulties encountered, especially with the larger, high-budget, high-profile works.

I just finished reading the book" Pretty things for nice People" written by Joe Fiebiger and I'll have to say is is absolutely Fantastic!!!
His writing style is fun and and allows the reader to peak inside a life that was filled with wealthy and powerful people and to see just what it takes to help these clients get what they want . Joe' s company P A Feibiger was the leading Decorative Metal working company in New York and provided the very best of Forged and delicately fabricated metalworkthat the nation has ever seen . Under Joe's Direction he took on some serious challenges , such as restoring the Statue of Liberty as well as creating new Ironwork fences at the Frick Museum in NewYork City. All this work matched the original Masterpieces in exactness and spirit! This book is a real treasure in that Joe loves to add little back stories about the clients and the jobs that became real challenges for the companies master craftsmen as well as Joe himself. The book includes many funny stories that Joe conveys about New York socialites as well as well known real estate developers that will leave you in stitches.

Joe Fiebiger (author) is a modern day business man. He has taken over the family Iron Works business handed down from his father and grandfather (founder) - their memory is with his every move.
The early chapters in the book discuss people who were very influential in Joe's career. The bulk of the book looks at projects done for such notable clients as Brooke Astor and Donald Trump. A good portion of the book gives an in-depth accounting of Joe's signature project, the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in the 1980's.
Throughout the book, Joe interjects his own feelings as problems and awkward situations arise. Joe is an interesting guy and I found myself laughing at his "off the cuff" comments.

Great book!

My copy of the SOE manual arrived today and I dived into it. Smallish but quite informative. It helped me to understand several books on the SOE agents I read and why they did what they did.

WW2 Manual of Trade craft

This world war two British manual for spies dropped into occupied countries contains the statecraft British authorities considered necessary to keep the agent alive long enough to provide useful information or conduct various types of sabotage designed to impede enemy production, transportation, or morale. General statecraft has not change over the centuries though technologies, of course, have. As it is the manual is of value to the military historian and to the espionage buff.

She believes that it takes education, positive action, and compassion to create better lives for all creatures-animal and human. A True Gift

I deeply appreciate Val Silver's emphasis on adopting senior rescues, as I've adopted 5 rescue dogs and a rescue cat, myself. But I've never read a more articulate, heartfelt essay about the joy of loving a senior dog than the Foreword by Charlotte Meade, of Meade Canine Rescue. Everytime I read it, I'm moved to tears. She writes about what I feel in my heart, and her words tie the entire book together. I'm equally grateful for the inclusion of "A Dog's Last Will and Testament". Also, Val Silver's guide to senior dog care is helpful to anyone who is considering the possibility of adopting an older dog. The only point I would emphasize is that it's not necessary to over-vet your dog! Nowadays, vet care often consists of unnecessary, expensive testing and treatment for conditions that are a natural part of aging in a dog. For some people, the idea of high vet expenses is so daunting that it discourages them from adopting a senior. My experience with senior dogs has taught me to be more tuned in to and accepting of my dogs' declining health, as well as more trusting of my own natural instincts. I cannot afford expensive vet care, but find that if I concentrate on feeding the healtiest diet I can afford, give them plenty of love, affection, and exercise, I make very few trips to the vet. It's much more important to me to save the life of an older dog than it is to try to "cure" the dog's old age!

A WONDERFUL BOOK ABOUT RESCUING SENIOR DOGS! MUST READ :)

After reading Val Silver's book "Rescue Me" I couldn't wait to read her next book "Rescue Me Seniors"! I loved reading the stories of how these women came to adopt their senior dogs and give them a loving home for however long they have left to live. It seems that there is an epidemic going on with people dumping senior dogs at high kill shelters with the main excuse "too old," and not many people know about that. I also do dog rescue and know there is no greater feeling than saving a life, especially older dogs who have a much harder time getting rescued or adopted.
I encourage every dog lover to read this book, give it to their friends, and to enlighten people about helping and adopting senior dogs!
A huge thank you to Val Silver for writing about this subject!

How wonderful, finally some recognition for our precious seniors

How wonderful, finally some recognition for our precious seniors. I have worked with rescue dogs for many years and am so very happy to see a book dedicated to them. Everyday in local papers and on Craig's list I see the adds where the loyal friend, who was by his owners side for years is being given away or abandoned because of new babies, allergies, moving to an apartment etc. I will never understand how anyone could give up a beloved friend and I thank God everyday for the very special rescuers that dedicate their lives to making sure these precious souls are not forgotten. Absolutely loved it and I hope others may join in saving them, you will never regret it!

Beyond the Things that go Bump in the Night

I have read all of Tate's novels and was not surprised to find myself quickly drawn into this one. I found it hard to put the book down when it was time to go to sleep but was relieved to leave Nathan to his night terrors once I fell asleep. The story is a haunting one about a firefighter who does battle with the "trolls that live in his soul". I didn't know quite what to expect when I purchased the book but I'm glad I did. It was a fast read because it was so hard to find a good "stopping place" when bedtime rolled around. If you are intrigued with the supernatural and ghostly appearances you too will enjoy Beckoning Souls. Poor Nathan didn't have the benefit of acquaintance with Jennifer Love Hewitt's character in Ghost Whisperer. He had to deal with the apparitions on his own when even his family believed that he was losing it and needed to be locked up in a mental ward. He never knew a moment's peace while the ghosts harassed and attacked him physically and mentally day after day, night after night. Thrills and Chills!

This is a little out of my usual genre to read, but I've read all of the author's other books and loved them, so I had to give this one a shot, and boy am I glad I did! I couldn't help but feel for poor Nathan and cringe as his life spiraled out of control. Parts of this literally gave me chills!

J.R. Tate's style is evident in how deeply we get into Nathan's point of view. I felt like I was experiencing all that he went through right along with him. Give this book a shot--you won't regret it.

Revelation made easy? There’s no such thing

Revelation made easy? There’s no such thing. The book of Revelation is often the most misinterpreted and misunderstood book in all of the Bible. Yet, Bruce Green does his best to simplify a highly controversial book, and he aims at simplifying it for the Christian interested in a deeper study. From my perspective, Green’s book is a wonderful primer to whet one’s appetite in a study of Revelation. He lays wonderful groundwork that, if one so desired, could lead to a deeper study of the book or its themes.

Very seldom does someone write a commentary or study guide on Revelation without getting so deep that the reader is prone to become discouraged and give it up. Green, however, communicates masterfully as a pedagogue to even the babes in Christ. He anticipates that his readers will have questions that arise from their study, so he states the probable questions for the critical thinker and gives answers to them that seeks to remain true to the book’s context.

In communication classes, it’s often been said that a speaker should tell their audience what they’re going to talk about, talk about it, and then tell them what they talked about. I believe Green has done just this – especially the last part. When culling through a mountain of details about Revelation, he succinctly summarizes what he already said for clarity’s sake. The reader will truly appreciate this aspect of the book.

No book, however, is going to be thought of as without fault. A more informed reader may be prone to disagree with Green’s position on the dating of the book. I, however, am not one of them, but several hold to different theories of the dating of the book while Green advocates the reign of Domitian as the dating of the book. Others who hold to the dating of Nero or Vespasian will find fault, but Green has attempted to handle those objections on the front end of his writing by addressing such topics. The dating is always a matter of debate when studying this book.

The table of contents doesn’t make it conducive to flip ahead to a particular passage should one wish to study one certain verse. This may frustrate some readers, but flipping through the chapters will yield the results one wants. Furthermore, something that may have been most helpful would have been an index for quick reference should one want to study certain themes of the book: the identity of 144,000, the mark of the beast, and the 1,000 year reign, for example. An index of these themes for quick reference would be a plus for some. The content of the book is wonderful, but making the book more reader friendly will go far in helping the brand.

I think my favorite aspect of the book is the Romanism of the work. As a lover of all things Greco-Roman, I appreciated Green’s delving into Roman history here and there to give a better grasp of the context. This is a rich read, and certain to be beneficial to anyone who picks it up.

Revelation for the Perplexed

The Thrill of Hope by Bruce Green

Pastor Bruce Green has given his readers an accessible and hope-filled look at the sometimes puzzling Book of Revelation. Bruce writes, “In the same way, Revelation was written to show Christians there’s no power like hope. As John will demonstrate, Satan is the ultimate evil and force behind Rome (14).” There is both a historical rootedness concerning John’s Epistle and a spiritual battle taking place that John sees in his vision that Bruce seeks to capture.

Speaking of the “testimony of Jesus” in Revelation 1:9, Bruce remarks that, “Revelation is a bugle call breaking through the haze and chaos of battle urging them not to retreat from the front lines, but to keep their banners raised high for Jesus (29).” Bruce takes the description of John’s presence on Patmos “on account of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus” to be indicative of John’s faithful witness to God by which he has been exiled to Patmos (28). This kind of battle ready witness for the faith is evident throughout the epistle as John gives warning to his readers to stand ready.

What I also really enjoyed about this book is Bruce’s interpretive strategy in interpreting Revelation. He writes, “John is telling us that God made the message known by signifying it through His angel by John. This is of critical importance because we’re entering a book of pictures, symbols, and representations. To try to literalize them is to disregard what we’ve been told; its’ to ignore the instructions we’ve been given (36).” Understanding the apocalyptic nature of Revelation is to see that John had in mind symbols that pointed to concrete realities in his ministry but also figures that pointed beyond him to the futre.

Overall, I think this was a very good resource on the book of Revelation. With research backed by the work of Bauckham, Gorman, Aune, and others, you can tell that Bruce has done his research.

Thought-Provoking

The Thrill of Hope is a thought-provoking book about the Book of Revelation. Its author, Bruce Green, is part of the Tenth Street Church of Christ in Opelika, Alabama. I do not know much about the Tenth Street Church of Christ, but I am vaguely familiar with the Churches of Christ’s teachings about prophecy, on account of friends and acquaintances who are part of the Church of Christ, and also books that I have read, such as a book of Guy Woods’ answers to questions about the Bible. I was curious to learn more about how a Church of Christ devotee would approach specific passages in the Book of Revelation.

My understanding is that the Church of Christ maintains that Revelation primarily concerns the first century C.E., even though they acknowledge that it has lessons that are relevant to subsequent generations of Christians. My understanding is also that the Church of Christ does not interpret the millennial reign of Christ literally. I do not know if Churches of Christ would accept the labels of preterist (or at least partial preterist) and amillennial, but my impression is that they fit these categories. I wanted to read Green’s book, not only to see how a Church of Christ person would interpret specific passages in Revelation, but also to read ideas about how I can approach Revelation as a Christian. I have not known what to do about passages in Revelation that seem to suggest that Christ is coming soon, or quickly, now that we are about two-thousand years after the Book of Revelation was written. Did the Book of Revelation make a prediction that did not come to pass—-that Christ would return in the first century? I am aware that Church of Christ people tend to interpret “soon” in the Book of Revelation literally, so I was interested in learning more about such a position.

Bruce Green’s book did not disappoint. His argument is that the Book of Revelation is about God’s historical judgment of the Roman Empire. According to Green, Christ’s coming in Revelation is not how a number of Christians interpret it. Rather, Christ’s coming in that book is about Christ coming in judgment against Rome, since coming in Scripture can refer to God coming in judgment (at various points in history). Moreover, for Green, the kingdoms of the world becoming the kingdoms of Christ in Revelation 11:15 is not about Christ coming to earth to rule and create an earthly paradise, but rather is the manifestation of Christ’s already reigning kingdom. Green refers to passages in Revelation that appear to suggest that Christ is already reigning (1:5; 2:26-27; 3:21), and he contends that Christ manifested this kingdom—-or brought it near in proximity—-by justly punishing Rome. Green likens Christ’s kingdom to a submarine, which is underwater but sometimes manifests itself by coming above water: Christ’s kingdom already existed in the first century, but it came near when Christ exacted judgment against Rome. What about the rewards of the righteous and the punishments of the wicked that are promised in Revelation? Green affirms that the righteous who resisted Rome will receive everlasting bliss and that the wicked who sided with Rome will go to the lake of fire. But Green also maintains that Revelation was promising temporal blessings to the faithful Christians. Things historically got better for Christians after the death of Domitian, Green notes. Green also interprets the new heavens and the new earth in light of the Great Commission to spread the Gospel.

I should add that Green interprets a significant amount of Revelation symbolically, as representing such things as Rome, the church’s witness against it, and Christ’s judgment of it. Green notes that the Greek word esamenen in Revelation 1:1 relates to the Greek word for symbol, and so he concludes that Revelation is a book of symbols of what would soon occur. Let me also say that I was impressed that Green addressed questions one might ask regarding his position. For example, did Christ truly judge Rome in the first century, when the Roman Empire continued to exist for a few centuries longer? That is an excellent question, and I admire Green for addressing it.

I am not entirely convinced by Green’s arguments. First of all, Revelation seems to me to be part of the apocalyptic tradition, and my impression is that apocalyptic literature often forecasts a near end, followed by paradise. Why would Revelation be any different? Second, the statement in Revelation 11:15 that the kingdoms of the world have become the kingdoms of Christ seems to me to concern more than people seeing Christ’s justice against Rome: they appear to describe a transfer of authority over the world’s kingdoms from the world to Christ. While Revelation may acknowledge that there is a sense in which Christ rules now, that does not preclude that it was also hoping for a time when Christ would rule more fully, over earth. And, third, looking at other uses of the Greek verb semaino in the New Testament, it does not necessarily concern using symbols, but communication, or indicating something (see John 12:33; 18:32; 21:19; Acts 11:28; 25:27). I acknowledge that Revelation has its share of symbols, though.

Green’s book is still thought-provoking, and it draws from respected scholars (e.g., N.T. Wright, Richard Bauckham, etc.). I appreciated Green’s insights, particularly his story about how he used to judge certain Christians as lukewarm but came to view them sympathetically with maturity. Green also made a lot of references to movies, television shows, music, and literature, and that enhanced the book. His story at the end about Aretha Franklin appearing to comfort Billy Preston while they were rendering “O Holy Night” was moving, and Green told the story in an obviously heart-felt way.

A wonderful book!

A very straight forward message. Brother Jake lays out a simple, straightforward plan for recovery. The best part is that he gives God the leading role in your recovery. We are parents of an addicted child. Brother Jakes book helped us to understand what our child needs to do to recover. He also has helped me to understand my eating addiction. Thank you Brother Jake. I would highly recommend this book to parents of a child with an addiction. Also for parents of an addicted child. Even a friend of an addict. The biggest road block for my situation is that my child has turned his back on God. I'm still on my knees interceding for our child.
