Peace Corps Mission Statement: 1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women. 2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served. 3. To promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. As a sophomore in high school, I wrote a report for English class about the book, The Ugly American. The Americans were US government workers and diplomats, and their ugliness stemmed from their hubris, ignorance, and disinterest in the people of the fictional country where they served. The book s hero, Homer Atkins, was considered ugly because of his physical appearance. His behavior, however, was beautiful. He lived with the natives and understood their needs. He was befriended by the locals and helped them in ways that may have been small to their country, but very important in their everyday lives.

A Peaceful Page-Turner
By Hal 1945
Full disclosure, the author is my oldest friend. Further full disclosure, some years ago I tested the friendship by disparaging a very early manuscript draft of this memoir/travelogue of his Peace Corps experience. Thus, it was with some trepidation I started reading Ripples in the Pond. I need not have worried. Mr. Stake has given us a warm, intelligent, insightful and thoroughly believable account of his younger self's encounter with the rigors, frustrations and deep satisfactions of rural India in the 1960s. It's a gentle page-turner that speaks to the reader in the manner of excellent letters from old friends.

A well told tale from a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer
By Rachel Knight
Ever wonder what it was like to be a Peace Corps volunteer in India in the 1960's? I didn't know how curious about it I was until I started reading this book. What an incredible set of experiences. I was in the Peace Corps too, three decades later and one continent over. Things sure were done differently in Mike Stake's time. I also studied abroad in India and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting that unique land again in this reading. The pace is slow enough to provide rich detail but fast enough to keep your interest. The tone is light enough that you don't feel beaten over the head with anything but it's not irreverent. I recommend this read as a worthwhile experience abroad in a land as foreign as India in a time just long enough ago that globalization hasn't stepped too broadly onto the scene. This is really a gem. Enjoy!

A well written and inspirational tale of one Peace Corp Volunteer's journey to a small village in India.
By Mark D. Walker
As a returned Peace Corps volunteer I'm amazed at the vivid portrayal the author depicts of the small village in India and the fellow volunteers and villagers he got to know. His story really does depict how his involvement with this village impacted their quality of life and agricultural production in a most impressive way. The profile of the real hero of the story, a local farmer called Jagdish is most vividly depicted---after all its often the locals who carry on what ever a volunteer can hope to bring to a community. The author's ongoing involvement with the community after his Peace Corps service is most impressive and encouraging for those of us who have served abroad a some point.
