Boats without Oars, by Kristin Carroccino, Michael Carroccino

In the summer of 2012, Kristin, Michael, and their two children climbed into the family car with 100 days' worth of equipment, clothing, and investigative desire. Knowing their tribe of Christians to be quite reserved around the subject of evangelism, the Carroccinos set forth to catch Episcopalians in the act of sharing their faith. Along the way, they invited friends far and near to collaborate toward a new understanding of evangelism as spiritual practice. Over five months of conversation and 15,000 miles of driving, Michael and Kristin journeyed into an unseen world, where Episcopalians invite others into faith in ways that redefine the conventional paradigms of what it means to "share the Good News." Contributors: Kristin Berkey-Abbott, Roger Hungerford, Jonathan Weldon, Mary Balfour Van Zandt, Dale Caldwell, Nancy Ricketts, Greg Rickel, Josh Hosler, Janet Davis, Carol Morehead, Evan Garner, Bill King, Mike Tanner, Jonny Baker, Jeremiah Griffin, Becky Harrison, Rebecca Hall, David Boyd, terry Pierce, Cara Spacarelli, Peter Lane, Sara Clarke, Curtis Amquist, Jodi Baron, Edmund Harris, Meredith Henne Baker, Kevin Goodrich, Michael Yankoski, Jeri Ballast, Mirella Carroccino, Caedmon Carroccino, Kristin Carroccino, and Michael Carroccino.

About the Author
Kristin Carroccino is a writer, editor, and artist currently living in Seattle. She is a contributor to and editor of two books: A Journey into Wholeness: Soul Travel from Lent to Easter and A Journey toward Home: Soul Travel from Advent through Epiphany, both publications of Mustard Seed Associates. Her poetry has appeared in several small journals. She enjoys teaching her son and daughter all sorts of interesting things, especially natural history and mindfulness techniques. She is learning a lot about robotics from her son and how to build fairy houses and use a sewing machine from her daughter. She experiences the movement of Spirit most often in nature, listening to beautiful music and prayers, and reading complicated poetry and prose on the couch under a blanket with a mug of warm tea. More information about her work may be found at www.carroccinocollective.com. Michael Carroccino is a priest at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, where he explores ways of equipping people to live out their faith at home and in the workplace. You can read or listen to his sermons at www.saintmarks.org. As a homeschooling parent, he spends much of his free time learning about comic books and computer programming from his energetic and precocious children. Despite thousands of miles spent behind the wheel, road trips with his family rank high on his list of favorite activities. When he’s not on the highway, Michael enjoys cooking, reading, spending time outdoors, and sharing blankets, good books, steaming mugs of tea, and the couch with his wonderful wife. What Faith Really Means
By Penelope
I read Boats Without Oars while traveling myself, held captive on a train, fortunately with this wonderful book in hand. I could not put it down. The combination of fascinating essays and fine art-in-print was magical for me. This book is a fine companion at any time and especially while traveling because it is the story of the Carroccinos' summer trip around the U.S.visiting progressive and welcoming Episcopal churches. Boats Without Oars gave me a fresh understanding of what faith really means and a family's commitment and life within it.

Boats Without Oars “How does Evangelism work in a church ...

Boats Without Oars

“How does Evangelism work in a church that shrinks from the very word?” Michael Carroccino

What are the many Episcopal Churches doing to meet the challenges of a rapidly diminishing church membership, of a people who are coming adrift from old core structures of social identity?

The Carroccino’s - Michael, Seminary student, and Kristin, writer and artist, with their two children, Mirella and Caedmon, set out on a summer’s cross-country trek to find answers to these questions.

Readers are invited to accompany them on their travels as they visit churches, interviewing church leaders who are making a difference in their communities and thriving in the process.

This is a story that nourishes hope. This is evangelism translated into creativity, innovation and compassion, bringing transfusions of Life into formerly dwindling congregations.

Christianity is alive and well, if you know where to look. What this book makes clear is that churches still have an important role to play in furthering the message of Jesus.

A delightful read. Don’t miss it!
