Fantastic psychological thriller revealing the darkest sides of a human psyche

‘The Judas Scar’ is the second novel by Ms Jennings, but it’s the first book by her I had the opportunity to check out. I really try hard to have a blank slate state of mind when I start reading a book, as well as not have any expectations, especially if I haven’t read anything by that author. However, I’ve been hearing so so many great comments about ‘The Judas Scar’ I simply couldn’t wait to find out what’s the reason for the buzz. And yes, I had high expectations, but as high as they were I didn’t expect to love this book so so much. So, as you see, the buzz is sometimes right and in the case of ‘The Judas Scar’ I totally approve of it.

The story follows Will and Harmony, who’re married but experience slight troubles in their marriage ever since they lost their baby. They have always been a couple people look up to, solid marriage, lots of love for each other, even not having a baby was something they agreed on years back. However, after realizing she’s pregnant, Harmony couldn’t be happier while Will is having second thoughts but doesn’t feel strong enough to confront his wife about how this unborn child is making him feel. But after losing the baby, Harmony is feeling down though she’s still trying to be the rock Will relies on. But she isn’t the strong Harmony any more, while Will experiences some other emotions besides grief. But, their lives become even more complicated when Luke, Will’s friend from boarding school shows up, bringing up some memories and secrets Will has been trying hard to bury.
Secrets, lies, love, lust, this book has it all. There are so many aspects Ms Jennings covered in this book. Loyalty and trust between partners and friends, the hurt and anger of feeling betrayed, the sadness of living a life without feeling the love of parents. The story is too complex and would take me a lot of time to analyze every aspect of it. It’s also a thought provoking novel, one that will make you think about your own life, marriage, friendships. The novel took off to a slow start and I must say I wasn’t impressed with Harmony at the beginning. She seemed too perfect as a character and very unrealistic. However, once Luke was introduced to the scene, the real action began and things started developing in a direction I didn’t expect them to go. I saw the characters (Will, Luke and Harmony) transform in front of my eyes, showing they are not what I thought they were at the beginning. Sometimes life situations, especially what we’ve been through in our childhood define us and for some those very childhood memories are a burden they carry for all their lives. We all have scars, every person we’ve met has had an impact on us. Each of us has had a Judas in their lives, those that haven’t, you should consider yourself lucky. But it’s not the scars that make us who we are, but the ways we try to heal them and move on. Either we forgive, or we turn into bitter, full of anger people. Same happens to the characters in this book. The book explores so many serious topics, one of them being bullying, and the way sometimes people close their eyes in front of it. It’s getting epidemic proportions in some countries and it’s taking its toll every day with hundreds and hundreds children every day damaging them (physically or mentally). Maybe bullying was always a problem each society through history had to face, but seems lately it’s taking bigger proportions and loads of different forms. It’s a problem we all need to work on and try our hardest to stop it. Nothing is more fragile than a child, and as grown ups we need to work on persevering the innocence and well being of the youngest.

As you see, there are a LOT of topics these book covers and a lot of things it will make you think about. Even days after finishing it, I can’t take this book off my mind. Fantastic psychological thriller revealing the darkest sides of a human psyche. I can only imagine how hard it was for Ms Jennings to write such a book, especially since she’s passionate about the subjects as she reveals at the end of the book. Must have been cathartic even, and I applaud to her for delivering this book in such a realistic way, for creating such diverse and memorable characters and for keeping me guessing till the very last page. I honestly feared the slow pace and the number of characters involved in the story (too little for my liking) would stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book. However, this is truly a gripping, atmospheric read that will get so many emotions out of you. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, especially fans of family drama/mystery/psychological thrillers. Prepare yourself for one hell of a journey!

It will stay with you for a long while.

I had heart great things about this book so when I won a signed copy on Sophie's blog Reviewed the Book (check it out, it's a great blog), I was over the moon. And now that I have read it, even more. It is definitely one of the best books I have read this year. The prologue took my breath away and from that moment I was totally hooked to its pages, discovering bit by bit Will and Harmony's story.

Will and Harmony are in a difficult moment, after agreeing on not having children, Harmony fell pregnant and felt somehow complete, with a joy inside her like nothing before, so when she suffers a miscarriage, her world falls apart and Will, with still troubled by demons of the past, is not there to give her the support she needs. Now add Luke to this cocktail, charming, determined, even obsessive. He comes from Will's buried past and is not afraid of unveil it and take Will's present from him.

Through these characters, Amanda Jennings handles serious topics like bullying and abuse in a very sensitive way but without avoiding the darkness that always surrounds them. There are some twists and revealed secrets that make you wonder where some humans have lost their humanity. One thing for sure, this book awakens strong emotions in oneself. You won't be left indifferent.

And what an ending. Once I finished, I felt numb. Like I had so many thoughts and feelings and my brain wasn't able to process them, questions kept popping into my mind and little bits of the book kept coming back to me. I am sure this book is going to stay with me for a long while. Plus, I reccommend that you read the author's notes because Amanda explains where she came up with this idea and it just reminds you that this might be a work of fiction but it's not far from the truth of this world. The Judas Scar is a must read and I can't wait to read more from Amanda.

Impressive and amazing!

Harmony is very unhappy. She's had a miscarriage and ever since that moment she wants nothing more than to become a mother. Unfortunately her husband Will isn't very happy with this wish. He doesn't see himself as a father. That's a result of his troubled childhood, a time he doesn't talk about at all. Harmony knows nothing of his past and what happened between him and his former best friend Luke. They both went to the same boarding school.

Harmony and Will are having problems and Harmony is attracted to Luke. She doesn't know her husband's history with this man and she has no idea what kind of wounds are being reopened because of their meetings. She now plays a part in something she doesn't know anything about.

Will and Luke have been bullied and abused. Their time at school was horrible and it has formed them. Every day their adult life is being influenced by their past. It broke my heart to read about what happened to those two boys. Amanda Jennings has written about it in such a beautiful and brave way. The feelings of all the main characters are perfectly understandable even though it doesn't mean they're right and without consequences. People who have been the victims of such terrible actions have to carry this burden with them for the rest of their lives. Amanda Jennings has phrased their emotions and inner struggles really well. The Judas Scar is such a good book. The story is strong and it managed to make me feel so many things at the same time. I highly recommend this novel, it's gripping and very impressive.

A fast-paced page-turner

Exceptional Depravity tells the true-life story of the brutal murder of an elderly couple in Davis, California, and the subsequent arrest of a local teenager, who confessed to the crime but later plead not guilty by reason of insanity. Billingsley sets the scene very nicely (though there is nothing "nice" about the details of this grisly crime), introducing the reader to the victim, the accused, and the town in which they lived. Davis is relatively small university town in north-central California, noted for the number of its bicycle paths -- not the setting in which one expects a double murder to take place. The victims themselves were model citizens --- the husband, after retiring from his law practice, volunteered his time representing criminal defendants who felt they had been wrongfully convicted; both husband and wife were active at their (Unitarian) church, and both were active in the local arts scene. The accused, Daniel Marsh --- the "Dan Who Likes Dark" of the subtitle, so nicknamed because that's how he described himself to his classmates -- set out the night of the murders looking for someone to kill, and succeeded. Billingsley explores the influences and motivations that seem to have led him to do it, and these are some of the most interesting passages in the book.

The second half of the book walks through Marsh's trial, day by day, and is an interesting look at what actually happens in courtrooms. This was a thought-provoking, fast-paced page turner, which fans of crime stories are sure to enjoy

Brutality at its worst

I read this book to find out what happened in the murder of two people I knew (and interviewed, separately, over the years.) The author is extremely thorough in his research, but such thoroughness does not always make compelling reading. If you want to know how a court handles a sensational crime, this would be fascinating. If you are more interested in the facts, but not the process, not so much.

Bottom line: Two very nice, very giving members of this small community lost their lives in the most brutal way possible. In the end justice was served.

Great story, great legal detail.

Some true crime genre books miss the legal details for the soap opera drama. Not this one. The story of this well-publicized murder both riveting and disturbing, to be sure. But Billingsley also documents the legal decisions and details, in a way any motivated reader can appreciate. I think readers will find that part of this book actually instructive.

We've featured an extract from this book on page 60 of this month's issue; if you've already looked over Sujata Shah's Crazy Quilt then you'll know that the author is an inspired designer. Sujata has a unique perspective on the craft, being born in Mumbai and moving to the USA later. She describes in her introduction how as an adolescent she would love fabrics but found sewing crushingly dull, telling her mother she would ‘rather die than hold a needle'! Later in life, after moving to the States and getting married, she discovered a love of quilting, luckily for us, and took much inspiration from fusing the styles of her native India and American folk art and Amish quilting. The resulting projects are a sight to see! The 15 free form block projects featured in this book are a celebration of this “melting pot,” and brim with ideas. The book is accompanied, refreshingly, with photographs illustrating some of the inspirations and stories behind the projects, and it's a pleasure to see how Sujata has translated them into works of quilted excellence. The author of this book grew up in Mumbai, India, and now lives in Pennsylvania, USA. A graphic designer and quilter, she finds inspiration all over the world- in the quilts from Gee's Bend, the Indian godharis and the bold, colorful fabrics from Africa. I love everything about Indian design and color and this book rocked me from the opening and short show-n-tell of hand embroidered wallhangings, and printed fabrics. I love the techniques that the designer shows us in her book although they are not totally unfamiliar to me, as American free-form quilters have been using, teaching, and writing about these techniques for years. Yet, for some reason, the work and process spelled out in this book is speaking to me now. Wow. Maybe it's because the focus and simplicity of both the quiltmaking and the process of patchwork, has been unabashedly simplified and not used as a mere precursor for some kind of unattainable museum-worthy free form fabric masterpiece. All of her piecework is so liberating and freeing and, it had occurred to me, this freedom in cutting and free-form sewing might be just the thing a bored quilter might need to get out of her/his creative rut.I also want to give Shah props for including the additional layer of fiber-interest for including photographs that inspired her individual projects, like pottery, textiles, carved wood, African textiles, etc. I really enjoyed reading and learning the effortless techniques Shah teaches us in the book that are used to achieve the different patchwork patterns… (Mark Lipinski 11/24/14)

A New Curve in Diversity: Controlled Wonkiness

Okay, so you start with STRAIGHT sub-cuts of fabric, cut a CURVE into them with a STRAIGHT ruler, and then join the CURVES to create blocks that are traditionally composed of all STRAIGHT edges. Okay ...

What you end up with are the perfectly imprecise quilts featured in Cultural Fusion Quilts by Sujata Shah. Shah blends her Indian background with African and American inspirations to deliver 15 globe-shattering layouts ranging from 42.5" by 43.5" to 80.5" by 96.5". Want to see a pinwheel that spins faster than its classic brethren? Peppermint Pinwheels (64.5" square) is also a study in color contrast and fabric pattern movement. More calming effects can be seen in the simple lines and sedate taupes of Winter (42.5" by 49.5"). The result is almost Japanese, as is that of Lattice (60.5" square), with its confidently restrained palette of black, red, indigo, salmon, and tan.

My favorite is Sunset (45.75" square), one of several examples where a bit of Amish enters the mix. It uses the Square in a Square technique to create the half-square triangles for its Wave block. Cuts can be either curved or straight, but I am thinking curves might get lost in the short dimensions of each half-square triangle. Either way, you can piece with abandon, in that all those pesky diagonal seams don't have to match up exactly.

However, don't think accuracy is completely cast overboard in Cultural Fusion Quilts. Each project still requires that you match seams when joining blocks and rows, to the best of your ability. This, along with thoughtful fabric choices, keeps the bubbling wonkiness from boiling out of control. Shah's approach achieves a look that is not so abstract as to be unrecognizable. The supplemental beauty is that your quilting lines do not have to perfect, either. In fact, your quilt will be better for it.

Shah educates us as she explains the background inspiration for each quilt. She further enlightens us with additional colorways and layouts. Her instructions are brief, illustrated, and uncluttered. Just one thing might help in order to effectively - and safely - explain the curved cutting technique: I could use a few photos actually showing a person making the slices. (Small thing, unless you are new to curves or quilting.) Regardless, the quilting world pulls a little closer with Shah's carefully carefree approach.

The quilting book I've been waiting for!

I don't normally buy a quilting book before previewing a copy at the library, but I saw this book reviewed on a blog and decided to take the chance, and I am so glad I did!!!! I think this book has something in it for almost every quilter, from the beginner to advanced. I own a lot of quilting books and almost none, with the exception of Gwen Marston's, have information about free form piecing. If you are inspired by Gee's Bend quilts and are looking to make something interesting, this book is the first book I'd recommend you buy. Almost every quilt in the book is something I want to make, which is not true of most quilt books. And each pattern has an extension at the end of its chapter with ideas to modify the pattern. Truly this is the book I've been waiting for!

What a wonderful read . . . I especially like the way Sujata has connected influences from multiple cultures and her own family experiences AND shared those insights/connections through her gorgeous quilts!

I already have two inspired-by-the-book projects sketched with fabrics pulled for the first one (and my copy only arrived late yesterday). Can't wait to start stitching!!

Improve Your Financial Life

There are numerous sources on how to get out of debt, but Bill Harrison's "Get Out of Debt" is like the basics of getting out of debt. Similar to fundamentals and defense in basketball, the lessons in this book are approached from a basics level. The book also has practical methods to pay down the various debts, but the heart and soul is really in constructing and prioritizing your life so you are only spending on the things that enhance your life and help you get out of debt. There are great budgeting tips and numerous methods to pay down your debt. I recommend this book to anyone looking to take control of your life and get out of debt!

Want to know how to budget? Want to know how to live within your budget? Want financial freedom? Well look no further. I took and am still taking pointers from this book by Bill Harrison to help me maintain financial wellness. I was never a constant saver all my life, I started practicing constant saving through budgeting a few months ago but by reading this book I actually realise how to properly asses my spending habits and differenciate accuratly between my wants and needs and I can say I've been able to save more. I was actually introduced to this book by a friend who had debt issues and this book helped her, even though I never had debt issues this book has still helped me hence I purchased my own copy and it's still helping me today.

While there are some people that can give you short term fixes for whatever debt you may be in, this book will help with improving your finances for long term and also be debt free. Through this piece one will get help in identifying the cause of debt, assess the financial situation your in, introduce you to budgeting and how to create and live within that budget, cutting off or cutting back, as well as repaying your debt and what I love is it gives you different concepts of debt payment like the snowball way in paying off from smallest to largest and also avalanche which is paying off from the greatest to the smallest.

This book was awesome, this book is a must read for every adult whether in debt or no debt.

This book is really helpful in managing your budget.
If you go through every chapter it gives a detailed guide on how to get a grip on every aspect of your financial situation.
The first chapter learns you to inventory the cause of debt.
There are many methods on how one can live within a budget and can do more savings.
The middle section gives a detailed view on how to live within a budget.
Debt repayment methods and debt settlement options are very well explained in the last section of the book.
A really good guide on how to get out of debt and get a grip on personal finance.

National Prayer Leader Asks Right Questions About Meditation

Dennis has written the book for those who already mediate but need a foundation (scripture) and a focus (Christ), as well as those who have kept their distance from meditation and need some answers and encouragement. Dennis communicates with the biblical teachings of a pastor, the insights of a prayer leader, and the personal experience of a disciple who follows after Jesus.

Church members, intercessors, praying pastors ... we will all benefit from the instruction and wisdom found in Dennis' latest book.

A Healthy Presentation of Biblical Meditation

Thank you Dennis for taking on a challenging subject. Many Christians shy away from mediation due to the association with Eastern religions and/or cults. Dennis brings out both the Biblical roots of mediation and the Biblical practice of meditation. In doing so he reclaims an essential Christian spiritual discipline that has been employed by followers of Christ over the generations. An essential spiritual discipline that draws us nearer to the heart of God. I highly recommend this book.

Refreshing Truths from a Pastors' Pastor

Dennis Fuqua's passion for individual and corporate prayer pours through the pages. I love how Dennis shows us how to build a relationship with God by tuning into His Word. I enjoyed the topics (such as forgiveness and God's nature) and individual meditations throughout the book. His insights remind me to think slowly and deeply in my devotional times, with the intent of finding what God desires for me to mature. He invites us to slow down and look for God's truths and quietly process them in our hearts. I find Dennis' voice, selected Bible passages, and encouragement soothing to my soul.

About the Author
I never dreamed how rewarding being a mom could be. God graced Mark and I with two handsome boys, (what mother wouldn’t say that about her own?). The entire school years of the boys I had the pleasure to work around all their schedules so I could be there for them. I worked many different jobs from home. Faith and family were first on my heart and many sacrifices were made so we could make that work. We face life together and walk through struggles with each ones’ support. I have prayed now in this stage in the boys life that God will lead them each to a special lady to spend the rest of their lives with. We have gone on many mission trips together as a family and I hope each boy has it written on his heart the love of serving our Lord in the areas He has planned for them. Kelton and Decklan both are gifted in different areas and I already see how God can use them. My husband and I plan to expand our mission outreach to Africa soon. It also has been laid on our hearts to help with disaster relief. After prayer to God saying, put me somewhere where you can use me Lord and where I can save funds to help us help others and take a mission trip to Africa; I have currently found myself in a local school classroom as an aide. I have been blessed to work many various jobs over the years; having a degree in Speech Communications and Public Relations, has trained me well for versatility. I also have a minor in Art, so my love of nature and the beauty comes naturally. Artistically I love to capture nature with photos, art and painting; creating with my hands and enjoying the majesty of it all! I have begun illustrating for a few different books, one of which is in print; check it out; ‘Tommy the Tortoise’s Wish for Speed’ by Nathan Mercer and another children’s book in process that I illustrated. I will continue to live each day looking for the blessings around me in a sometimes sad, unthankful world. Sometimes staying positive and holding onto my beliefs, is all the hope that will get me to the next day, the promise of walking through the storms of life, for the next new adventure and challenge. I have strived to extend “grace” and “joy” to all those who I meet! Life is short, breathe the fresh breath of each new sunrise to fulfill your purpose in life………….You all have one!!!!!!!!

This book really took my breath as i read! I laughed, I cried and i loved it! Please consider this book a must read!
