May not be for everyone

I pre-ordered this book because the blurb sounded intriguing. After reading the book I am both sad and disappointed. I perhaps don't have the right to be, since nothing in the books description implied to me there would be a HEA. (At least in regards to Todd and Kyle) I would have been ok with a book where Todd finally figured out what happened to Kyle, but to have him find him and lose him again was not what I was looking for. The implication of happier times for Todd in the future was not enough to balance the awful events. The author's note at the end explained why he wrote the book the way he did. I understand his position, but would not have read the book had I known.

Heartbreaking Love Story!!!!

Return To Me by James Oliver French!

In their freshman year of college is where Kyle and Todd meet. They fall for each other in the hottest sexual way and then they fall madly in love with each other. Kyle disappears and this completely devastates and crushes Todd's heart. Now jump 15 years later and Todd is a very successful psychiatrist but he leads a very lonely life. He has never gotten over his love for Kyle and how he vanished from his life.

I enjoyed very much how this novel was written in two parts. The first part is from Todd's POV on how he meets and falls madly in love with Kyle. These boys come from very different backgrounds to say the least. Kyle comes from a very religious family and he is kicked out of the home for being gay. Todd comes from a very loving and accepting family and gives him the strength to be who he actually is. So when they meet, sparks fly and they become the amazing couple that everyone loves. They plan a future of love, marriage and possibly kids and everything is going perfect for this beautiful loving couple. Now Kyle vanishes without a trace and leaves behind a broken hearted and a completely devastated Todd.

The second part finds Todd 15 years later. He is very successful and financially secure but there is still a hole in his heart which he hasn't been able to fill. Then he meets Simon at a convention and now Todd thinks maybe his heart can be healed with Simon. Just as he was letting go of his past with Kyle and trying to move on, a dangerous patient arrives at the psychiatric hospital. This man has some brain damage and holds no memories of his past except for a few pieces here and there. Todd is very reluctant to treat him but he needs to know what happened 15 years ago in order to move on with his life with Simon. This is where the story gets so heartbreaking as Todd investigated what took Kyle away from him so many years ago. The answers are so shocking and heartbreaking as I found it ripping away at my heart. This story affected me in so many ways and the emotions that I went through reading it was just simply amazing. This author has written one of the most brilliant and heartfelt stories. I loved the writing style in this book, the characters he created and the heart wrenching angst was just so amazing. I loved this novel from page one to the very end! Will Todd find the true answers he is looking for and at what cost? Who will Todd end up with or will he be alone again? Can his relationship with Simon survive this? Will Todd and Kyle have the HEA they so desperately deserve? I highly recommend this beautiful story of love, acceptance, heartbreak, drama, intrigue and forgiveness.....Return To Me by James Oliver French!

Something different...

Return to Me is definitely a book you will either love or loathe and I say that only because this book is a little different and sometimes people don’t like change in their reading habits.

The first half of the book sets up Kyle and Todd’s story. I did like learning about their budding relationship and it had all the great trappings of a young, first love. At times I did feel details were skimmed over and I was told about their connection rather than being able to experience it for myself. But I was eager to read on because from the synopsis I knew something big was going to happen.

At 50% the book skips to 15 years later and Todd is very much a man with his life on hold. He never did get the answers he was searching for. It’s tricky to review the book without spoilers but I’ll try my best to do so. Kyle returns but not as the person Todd fell in love with, he’s been irrevocably altered. But Todd knows his Kyle is still in there, deep down inside, so he makes it his mission to help him.

What transpires next is unexpected to say the least. I don’t think it was a bad thing per se, but if you go into this book expecting a new adult romance then you may be left feeling unsatisfied. I’m not going to lie, I was more frustrated than upset when I reached the 90% mark. If this book is marketed as a mystery with a little love thrown in then I say great, but if it’s advertised as a love story with a twist then people may feel short-changed. I’m aware I’m speaking in riddles but once you read the story, my cryptic message will make more sense.

Return to Me is a change from my usual reads, and I picked it for exactly that purpose. It’s about one man’s journey through life. We get to experience his first true love and the affect it has on him throughout his later years. As I mentioned before, there were times when I yearned for more emotion, especially at the crux of the story. A major bomb was dropped and I felt it deserved more fanfare than what it got.

If you are looking for something different to read, then you might want to try this one. But I say go in with your eyes wide open and expect the unexpected. ~Ava

While visiting the site of a Paris church fire, Ravel, a poor aspiring writer who bears the emotional scars of a long-ago family trauma, encounters Inspector Brasseur, whom he recognizes as a former neighbor. Brasseur later seeks Ravel's help when an unidentified man turns up dead in a churchyard, his throat slit and a Masonic symbol carved into his chest, and hires Ravel as a subinspector. As the inquiry continues, Ravel begins to suspect that the Masons may be connected with a plot to replace Louis XVI with the Duc d'Orléans as well as a scandal involving the disappearance of the queen's necklace. Apocalypse Redux

The Cavalier of the Apocalypse is the third book published in the Aristide Ravel series of mysteries, but it is the prequel to the other three books. I'm glad I knew that before I began reading, because reading the books in chronological order is a distinct pleasure.

I don't recap plots--other folks have done that, so go read those reviews.

This first book is one that can, and should, be read on a number of levels. True, it's a murder mystery that must be solved the old-fashioned way, by the judicious application of observation and human reasoning alone. It's also the story of a young man whose last thought was to become a paid adjunct of the Paris police. And it's the story of a microcosm of Parisian society three years before the Revolution. All these elements--and more--succeed because the author has woven them seamlessly together with skill, elegance, an unerring sense of place, atmosphere, character, a vast knowledge of Paris from top to bottom, and an equally spot-on knowledge of French economic, political, and social history of the period. Do you know how rare it is to find good writing, believable characters, and historical accuracy all in one place? Rarer than it should be, but these qualities are all here.

Aristide Ravel is a scribbler, a copier of dull legal briefs, author of sarcastic polemics against the royal family, the Church, and the political state of France--illegal, of course, in 1786--the occasional poem, and whatever else will cover the rent for his series of squalid, frigid garret rooms and occasional meals in cheap eating houses where it's best not to look too closely at the contents of a plate of stew. He has a tortured past--but not one riddled with clichés, I assure you!--and a bleak future when circumstances lead him to an unofficial, and often uneasy adjunct role with the Paris police. Ms. Alleyn does not serve up her protagonist like an overstuffed Christmas goose; rather, she lets you see him evolve, layer by layer, almost like an onion, and by the end of this book in the series, you know there is more to Monsieur Ravel that you have seen and, most important, you want to know more.

The secondary characters occupy virtually every rung of the Parisian social ladder in the last, dismal days before the Revolution, and each is distinct, unique, fully drawn, and free from stereotyping. Inspector Brasseur, who recruits Ravel for his ability to analyze clues and study the strata of human nature, is particularly rich--gruff, hearty, critical, sympathetic, and pragmatic by turns, he holds his own as Ravel's foil in the solving of a curious mystery. The city of Paris is almost a character herself, sometimes tarted up like an expensive prostitute lurking among the arcades in the Palais-Royal, and other times stripped to its bare, smelly, and often unpleasant bones.

This is a mystery, so is it a good one? I thought so, but I also admit I was more interested in the people and the scenes, as well as the bits of living history flowing around the edges than I was in figuring out, ahead of time, who actually did it. When I reached the "revelation," it was a surprise, and a logical one, for those who paid attention to the clues.

I always warn, rather stridently, against a book whose grasp of history is skewed or nonexistent, and whose writing would embarrass a fifth-grader. Not so here. This book is not only worth your time and money, but it is also an excellent example, if you're looking for one amongst the chaff littering Amazon these days, of an elegantly written and--gasp!--accurate work of historical fiction.

a wholly exhilarating read

What a pleasure to read this marvelous book! What dismay to have it end.... and with a twist that stuns the reader's brain. Who could've killed poor Saint Landry, who? I asked as I crept through the streets of 18th century Paris. But Susanne Alleyn, in her infinite creativity, comes up with the perfect assailant. Well, no more about that intriguing killer--I won't be a spoiler. I'll just say that all of Alleyn's characters are beautifully imagined and true to their era: Aristide, in particular, with his traumatic past--and troubled present.
I won't reiterate the plot: you can read the starred review in PW. But I do want to offer what I like about this novel--aside from the fact that I'm in love with this period of history, and with the French enlightenment and pre-revolutionary period, and oh--with Paris itself. I do love the way Aristide skulks into the sleasy, smoky, noisy literary cafes, and sludges through the scary, winding streets. I love the cemeteries--their stinks and slimes, not to mention a dead body with its throat slit and skin tatooed (so to speak)with eerie symbols. I love the way the author wholly focuses on the mystery, with no extraneous subplots: we shadow the bumbling, engaging Aristide (who just wants to be a scribbler of seditious pamphlets--not a sleuth) every surprising minute of the way. A few cul-de-sacs, yes, into interesting backstory, along with an bit of unrequited love story; but mostly the novel speeds inexorably toward its end: a solution to the crime. Alleyn doesn't let us put the book down! I'm exhausted, but exhilarated.
Oh, and I'm highly intrigued with the occasional real historical person our antihero meets along the way: the Duc d'Orleans, who wants to replace the ineffectual Lous XVI, and most fascinating of all, the mad scientist Honore Fragonard and his astonishing Cavalier of the Apocalypse. A brilliant addition, to be sure! A terrific title. A terrific novel!... And finally, I love the way the author didn't jolt our bones in a rush of hurtling carriages and fiacres in the obligatory thriller-type climax, but rather in a neat, shocking turn of events, a moment of horror, and then, sigh, the heart-piercing End. Ah-hhhh. PLEASE, please SUBMIT!

Start with the prequel...

First Sentence: Aristide Ravel stumbled upon the first fire early on All Hallows' Eve.

Aristide Revel is a penniless writer who never expects to come across the body of a man lying in the snow of a graveyard with his throat slit and the body marked with Masonic symbols. Police inspector Brasseur, Revel's former neighbor, quickly recognizes that he is not a suspect in the killing, but quickly makes Revel a subinspector to help solve the crime.

Although this is the most recent book in the series, it is a prequel to the others so it made sense to read it first.

I appreciated Alleyn's skill at providing a strong sense of place and time. She takes us from grand mansions to inside the Bastille. Set just prior to the French Revolution, it provides insight into the political unrest of the period. It was also interesting to gain a perspective as to why the French supported the Americans during our Revolution.

Alleyn's skill at creating interesting characters is just as well done. She adroitly combines the fictional with the real with interactions which made sense. I found Ravel to be a character I want to follow. His personal history places his somewhat on the outside yet his intelligence and ability to reason make him make me think of a much more dimensional Holmes-type character. I particularly appreciated the scene where he uncovers the betrayal of one he thought to be his friend. I also appreciate that Alleyn did not follow a stereotypical path when dealing with another possible relationship.

The plot was very well done with interesting and unexpected details and a very good unanticipated ending. The period of the French Revolution is one I do not usually enjoy. I can't explain why I find it unpleasant, but I usually avoid books set during that time.

Ms. Alleyn has become an exception and now has a place on my buy list. I am delighted to know I've the other two books waiting for me on my TBR shelves.

Penkas Rides Again!

Truly a unique voice in fiction, Michael Penkas' stories remind me a lot of Ray Bradury's early work in such collections as "The October Country." No one writes like Penkas. He has a gift for the weird, but more than that, his stories are rich in detail and character, and his dialog crackles. Penkas' sense of humor, irony, drama and the absurd are to be relished. If TV anthology shows like The Twilight Zone, Thriller, and especially Alfred Hitchcock Presents were still around, Penkas would be a natural, a perfect fit to be part of those shows' writing staffs. Hop on board and take a ride on the wild side with Michael Penkas.

An Amateur Sleuth Like No Other

Michael Penkas is a writer everyone should know about. He brings a wry wit to everything he does, including this first novel, probably the first mystery to feature a dominatrix as amateur sleuth. Mistress Bunny is a Chicago dominatrix having a bad day. Feeling depressed, she cancels a session with one of her regular clients and is stunned to learn the next day that the man has committed suicide at the time of their appointment. She can't shake a sense of guilt, and when she learns suspicious circumstances about her client's death she can't help but snoop around a bit to find proof he was actually murdered.

Mistress Bunny is the draw here, a well-drawn and sympathetic character working a job that is often confused with prostitution. She -- and Penkas -- refutes this at every chance. Penkas draws the curtain on the Chicago dominatrix scene (at least I assume he does; I wouldn't really know) and reveals an aspect of society that isn't so much hidden as willfully overlooked. The travails of Miss Bunny's working and personal lives (she is dogged by a persistent ex-boyfriend) are the most enjoyable parts of the book. Penkas makes his characters come to life with well-observed details and droll dialogue.

The mystery story isn't as lively its amateur sleuth, but as she investigates Mistress Bunny does form an unexpected relationship with her client's widow. I've heard Penkas read a chapter -- not in this book -- where a weary police sergeant who sounds like someone who could become a regular character warns Mistress Bunny to stay away from murder investigations, which has me looking forward to more Mistress Bunny books with a stronger interaction with the police. Knowing Penkas' gift for dialogue, that should be a lot of fun.

This book is a gift to parents who don't quite know how to help their kids improve their writing skills. It's a quick read with easily digestible bites of information that can reduce the stress associated with writing essays. It organizes the process into logical steps that even a student with attention issues can "get." As the mother of a 16-y-o with ADHD, I believe this book will be a hugely helpful tool as she faces the gauntlet of college essays. Of special note are the "secret weapons" provided in the book -- things like "watch for keywords" and the "power of examples." When explaining how to conclude an essay, the author cautions against rehashing or restating what has already been written, but to provide something fresh, something new, a conclusion or thought that may surprise the reader. It's simple, but it's genius. I hope this book helps your family, too.

This is not "the end"...Brilliant, Billy Jolie!

Billy Jolie has done it again! The Tear Collectors was absolutely amazing! I felt as if I was there at Crystal Lake with Blaze, Brendan, and Farrah throughout the entire book. The scenery was described so vividly. Each character was intimately and beautifully illustrated from chapter to chapter. This book got very 'real' with the reader. The deep dark corners of these character's minds are very real. The problems that they face in the book are a harsh reality to many men and women of literally all ages.
The Tear Collectors was absolutely wonderful. I always had to read just "one more chapter" before bed! Billy's writing is truly beautiful and poetic. I can't wait to see what's next!!

An emotional journey...

I was a huge fan of the author's first novel, The Lust Garden, so I was very excited to read this story. It should be known that the two books are not connected and do not follow the same characters. The Tear Collectors did not disappoint! Jolie’s writing is stronger, more immersive, and captivating. The book follows three characters, Farrah, Brendan, and Blaze, as they spend the summer at a lake in Upstate NY. Each character intertwines with the other in unexpected ways tying them all together.

It was one of those books that I pretty much inhaled in one sitting and made me get all cranky whenever someone tried to interrupt me. Farrah, Brendan, and Blaze have a connection that becomes evident instantly. The characters are so real and expertly created that they practically jump off the page! My heart really broke for Farrah and Brendan. They both face tough adversaries. I have to admit, I cried reading some of the scenes involving Brendan and his father. What a powerful dynamic!

Farrah, like so many young girls, is suffering from body dysmorphia. This is where Jolie’s writing really sings. It’s easy to give a character a disease like this, but what Jolie does is bring you into it, so much so that as a reader you really get inside Farrah’s head. I don’t want to say how he does it. I think his readers should experience Farrah on their own, unspoiled. It’s some wild stuff!

The way the author described Crystal Lake ... It felt as if I was sitting at "The Rocks" overlooking the precipice with these kids. He describes the North Country with such perfection. You can tell he either lived here or did extensive research.

The story is funny at times, but will also pull the rug out from under you in a heartbeat with its twists. I always love when a book throws curve balls that I didn't see coming. Its got this really easy-to-read, yet dark angst feel to it!

Oh, and you will totally root for Blaze - the charming redhead with the sexy half-smile! Swoon!

The emotional journey of The Tear Collectors will stick with you long after that last page is read. It is a statement piece on what it is to be young, what it means to be human.

Pretty Things for Nice People is a delightful memoir and behind-the-scenes view of what is arguably the most respected and influential firm of artisans who worked in twentieth century New York City. Pretty Things is written by one of the nicest people of all, Joseph Fiebiger, who took the reins of his family's metalworking company in the late sixties. In this book Fiebiger uses a breezy, accessible tone to lead the reader through a candid, and often witty, tour of a sampling of projects that include major restorations of public buildings and original masterpieces, rendered on both the colossal and domestic scale. The journey begins with a small commission for an iron fence for a church in Brooklyn and culminates with massive restorations of two American treasures, The Statue of Liberty and the main building at Ellis Island, which has the largest copper roof in the country.

The "pretty things" part of the book offers insight into the technical challenges and the firm's often novel solutions. By way of explaining how the projects were completed by orchestrating teams of people with varied skills--be they in the form of design, metallurgy, or hands-on metalworking-- Fiebiger is unstinting in offering well-deserved praise for each person's valued contributions. However, Fiebiger is equally free in offering his perspective on some of the interpersonal difficulties encountered, especially with the larger, high-budget, high-profile works.

The "nice people" part of the book's title signifies a non-technical aspect of each project. Mr. Fiebiger, always respectful of the ancient traditions of trust and obligation between artisans and their patrons, gives us his personal view of the nature and motivations of some of his most interesting clients. I just finished reading the book" Pretty things for nice People" written by Joe Fiebiger and I'll have to say is is absolutely Fantastic!!!
His writing style is fun and and allows the reader to peak inside a life that was filled with wealthy and powerful people and to see just what it takes to help these clients get what they want . Joe' s company P A Feibiger was the leading Decorative Metal working company in New York and provided the very best of Forged and delicately fabricated metalworkthat the nation has ever seen . Under Joe's Direction he took on some serious challenges , such as restoring the Statue of Liberty as well as creating new Ironwork fences at the Frick Museum in NewYork City. All this work matched the original Masterpieces in exactness and spirit! This book is a real treasure in that Joe loves to add little back stories about the clients and the jobs that became real challenges for the companies master craftsmen as well as Joe himself. The book includes many funny stories that Joe conveys about New York socialites as well as well known real estate developers that will leave you in stitches.
Brilliantly Included in his writings you will find a multitude of techniques that the Company employed to repair and create some of Americas most beloved works of decorative art. .
As a Artist Blacksmith and business owner that services a similar client base I truly appreciate his thoughtful writings and and his extreme knowledge about the fine art of metalwork. I will be purchasing many of these book as gifts for fellow craftsmen as well as architects and designers who i collaborate with and feel there is a real value in everything Mr Fiebiger has written about

"Pretty Things....." is a nice read

Joe Fiebiger (author) is a modern day business man. He has taken over the family Iron Works business handed down from his father and grandfather (founder) - their memory is with his every move.
The early chapters in the book discuss people who were very influential in Joe's career. The bulk of the book looks at projects done for such notable clients as Brooke Astor and Donald Trump. A good portion of the book gives an in-depth accounting of Joe's signature project, the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in the 1980's.
Throughout the book, Joe interjects his own feelings as problems and awkward situations arise. Joe is an interesting guy and I found myself laughing at his "off the cuff" comments.
I enjoyed the book. It's an impressive list of names and places that kept me engaged throughout.
