"I think the author who influenced me the most as a writer was Richard Matheson." — Stephen King

This unique volume collects two remarkable conversations. Ray Bradbury, one of America's most widely-read authors, speaks eloquently about his intense love of writing – and for the first time goes on the record about his adventures and misadventures in Hollywood. Richard Matheson was a major writer in science fiction, fantasy and horror, whose novel I Am Legend spawned the current zombie craze and whose classic Twilight Zone episodes have been seen by millions; this is the only personal, definitive account of his extraordinary career. These are verbatim, uncensored interviews with two literary giants, conducted by Dennis Etchison and transcribed without revisions, rewriting or polishing.

"Now that they are no longer able to speak to us directly about their lives and careers, it seems only right that they have the last word. Call it the writer's cut." — Dennis Etchison

A great instruction manual for writers
By Paul Dale Anderson
I grew up as a writer reading Bradbury and Matheson, trying to imitate their styles. Bradbury's "The Small Assassin" and Matheson's I Am Legend remain my favorite of all stories, and The Marian Chronicles and Bid Time Return were significant influences. Of course, I loved Matheson's Twilight Zone episodes and his American International Poe screenplays for Roger Corman. Dennis Etchison, himself a significant force in horror, has done all writers a great favor by recording conversations with these guys while they were still alive, and we can be flies on the wall and listen in as they talk candidly about craft, the business of writing, and the horrors of Hollywood. Very highly recommended.

Fascinating conversation with two legendary masters of fiction, conducted by a fellow master of the craft.

Time returned as wine
By Moderan
EXCELLENT pair of interviews with titans of weird fiction. The Matheson portion is much longer and deeper but both are illustrative of the men's personalities and approaches.
The interviewer wisely chooses to interject little of his own personality into the proceedings, instead letting his subjects speak for themselves.
A good deal of the content concerns both authors relationships with Hollywood. Very interesting indeed.

A Morbid Taste for Bones (The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael), by Ellis Peters

In the first installment of an iconic historical mystery series, a medieval monk seeks a saint’s remains for Shrewsbury Abbey—but finds a murderous sinner instead.

A Welsh Benedictine monk living at Shrewsbury Abbey in western England, Brother Cadfael spends much of his time tending the herbs and vegetables in the garden—but now there’s a more pressing matter. Cadfael is to serve as translator for a group of monks heading to the town of Gwytherin in Wales. The team’s goal is to collect the holy remains of Saint Winifred, which Prior Robert hopes will boost the abbey’s reputation, as well as his own. But when the monks arrive in Gwytherin, the town is divided over the request.

When the leading opponent to disturbing the grave is found shot dead with a mysterious arrow, some believe Saint Winifred herself delivered the deadly blow. Brother Cadfael knows an earthly hand did the deed, but his plan to root out a murderer may dig up more than he can handle.

Before CSI and Law & Order, there was Brother Cadfael, “wily veteran of the Crusades” (Los Angeles Times). His knowledge of herbalism, picked up in the Holy Land, and his skillful observance of human nature are blessings in dire situations, and earned Ellis Peters a Crime Writers’ Association Silver Dagger Award. A Morbid Taste for Bones kicks off a long-running and much-loved series that went on to be adapted for stage, radio, and television.

About the Author
Ellis Peters is a pseudonym of Edith Mary Pargeter (1913–1995), a British author whose Chronicles of Brother Cadfael are credited with popularizing the historical mystery. Cadfael, a Welsh Benedictine monk living at Shrewsbury Abbey in the first half of the twelfth century, has been described as combining the curious mind of a scientist with the bravery of a knight-errant. The character has been adapted for television, and the books drew international attention to Shrewsbury and its history.

Pargeter won an Edgar Award in 1963 for Death and the Joyful Woman, and in 1993 she won the Cartier Diamond Dagger, an annual award given by the Crime Writers’ Association of Great Britain. She was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1994, and in 1999 the British Crime Writers’ Association established the Ellis Peters Historical Dagger award, later called the Ellis Peters Historical Award.

Good start to an epic pilgramage
By Steve Benner
Ellis Peter's first Cadfael murder mystery takes as its setting the events surrounding the translation of the holy relics of Saint Winifred from the remote Welsh village of Gwytherin to the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury in 1138. Taking this real event as her starting point, Peters weaves an enchanting if rather overly romanticised tale of mediaeval rural and monastic life. Naturally, the practical common sense and basic human decency of her very worldy central character, Brother Cadfael, win out in the end. Here, he neatly side-steps all of many power-struggles - secular, political and ecclesiastical - going on around him, to provide everyone with their heart's desire and solve the inevitable murder mystery into the bargain! Ellis Peters' writing style is so wonderfully erudite that one can always forgive her the occasional lapse into stereotypical characterisation or silliness of plot which tend to pepper her novels. "A Morbid Taste for Bones" is no exception in this regard, and whilst the story's central murder mystery is not at all hard for the reader to solve, the telling of it is so captivating that the book is hard to put down until it's finished!
Incidentally, I would recommend reading this book before any others in the series, because otherwise you will know which of the main suspects can be eliminated immediately! Of course, if you've seen the TV dramatisation, you'll know the main outcome already, but even then, the book is sufficiently different to still make it well worth reading. Recommended.

A Journey Through a Decade
By A Customer
A Morbid Taste For Bones is the start of a 20-book series about Brother Cadfael. The Cadfael books are absorbing reads, as others here have stated. I would like to add that you will enjoy the series so much more if you read the books in order. They chronicle the decade of civil war in England, between the factions of King Stephen and the Empress Maud. The books always have the ongoing story of this, in a little history lesson, usually at the beginning of the book. It can be complicated history for those coming to it, as I did, uninformed. But we are taken through the war years with these stories, and in chronological order, they tell the story of the civil war, along with the mystery of each book.
Also, the characters and their relationships develop along the way. Hugh Beringer comes into the picture early in the series and eventually becomes deputy to the sheriff, who is loyal to King Stephen. Hugh and Brother Cadfael begin their relationship with suspicion, but they come to respect each other for the intelligence and integrity each has. Hugh meets and marries Aileen, has a baby boy, and, around the ninth book, becomes the sheriff of Shrewsbury. By this time Cadfael and Hugh are fast friends.
Cadfael has his own secrets, little episodes of his life in the Crusades, that catch up with him during the series...but not right away. Later in the series, Cadfael confides in his dear friend Hugh, also relating the secret of this first book, Morbid Taste For Bones, which Hugh had not been privy to before.
I just loved this series, and I tend to think of it as one *really big* book! So do read all 20, and read them in order. They are all available, and all except one (The Hermit of Eyton Forest, no. 14) tell which number it is in the order, right on the front cover. Brother Cadfael is one of the most endearing characters ever created. Lose yourself with him in 12th century England when you need a break from the 20th or 21st century.

Great first in an addictive series
By K. Eames
I have read the first ten books in this series (mostly) in order, and would recommend doing so. Otherwise, you'll miss referneces to previous incidents of importance, and also lose a sense of continuity. Reading the series in order also allows you to enjoy the development of Cadfael's character and other characters who continue to appear throughout the series. Be advised, however, that most of those characters don't make their appearances until later books.
This first mystery serves as an excellent introduction to Cadfael himself, the historical backdrop of medieval England and Wales, and the general literary pattern of the Cadfael stories. It is a pleasant and enjoyable read for those who don't necessarily need their mysteries to be of the noir persuasion and who have a love of history. The title is a little bit deceiving, tempting you to think the story is more violent than it is - though there is certainly a murder to be solved
Read it, and begin a pleasant and long-standing association with Brother Cadfael.

Dog lovers! We've got a new bible...

Is there anything Dean Miller doesn't do well?! I love the angle of this book--how we can be better as people by understanding and serving our dog's needs. This book is packed with very useful information, and the delivery is engaging (this is a far cry from a training manual) which makes for a great read. I recommend this book to everyone--whether you've never owned a dog before, or if you've had dogs your entire life. There's really something for everyone in this book...it's a true must-have for the animal lover in us all.

The Bog: The Legend of Man's Best Friend, by John Preston Smith

In the midst of my land there is a thick, swampy grove where no human goes. It is a haven for snakes, root rot, mosquitoes, burrowing critters, and fox. On my walks, I give it a wide berth. In my mind, I figure it to be where wild things go to peacefully leave this world. I call it the Bog. On the day that cries of a wounded animal drew me into the Bog, I was no different than you. Now, I understand the choices that dogs make and how they were selected to be man’s best friend. I understand the source of their soul and their place in the hereafter. I see then as messengers and guardians. I understand the depth of their love as they seek little more than our friendship. And I understand their willingness to defend us in death. No one has been able to tell this story until now, because no one, other than me, has met Napoleon! I challenge you not to open the covers of this book—unless, you are willing to face your dog in a new light.

¡Excelente!
By Shawn Faust
This great little guide gets you right to the information you need for planning a trip to the Costa Blanca and I know I'll be using it as a reference while there. There's info on each of the towns in this area along with all you need to know to get to and from the nearby airports. I found the inclusion of web links, prices, opening and closing times and phone numbers especially handy to have all that you need in one place. For those of us who didn't pay close enough attention in Spanish class, there's a helpful translation section for common signs you might need to know. I have the Valencia guide by the same author and these types of details are consistent with what's in that one. Great bargain.

A Must-Have For All Costa Blanca Visitors
By Linda Plummer
This book really is a must-have for anyone planning to visit Spain's Costa Blanca. It's well-written and so easy to understand, with some nice photos and a Google map link. It covers all main tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca, giving a brief description, sights to see, and places you can stay. There are many pretty towns to visit along the Costa Blanca and, for me, the best thing about the book was its clear instructions on your options of getting to and from each resort - tram/train, bus, car. No excuse now for not getting to know the Costa Blanca better!

Daylight Atheism, by Adam Lee

"Adam Lee has long been one of my favorite atheist writers. (In fact, his blog is a big part of why I get into the game.) And this book is a perfect example of why. His writing is both clear and passionate -- a tricky balance. He dismantles theism with precision and righteous anger, and offers an inspiring vision of the alternative. Atheists will find both ammunition and inspiration here -- and theists who care whether the things they believe are true are encouraged to test their faith in this white-hot furnace."
--Greta Christina, author of Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless

"To a believer, atheism can seem dark, cold, and frightening. Adam Lee opens the shutters and lets the sunlight in. Daylight Atheism speaks clearly and passionately of the joy of living a reality-based existence guided by respect for each human person. Highly recommended."
--Mary Johnson, author of An Unquenchable Thirst: A Memoir

Daylight Atheism sums up the freethinking beliefs held by Adam Lee, known for his popular blog of the same name.

Says Adam Lee: "Even without gods, existence is overflowing with possibility. This life offers so much transcendent beauty, so many deep and beckoning mysteries, and so many opportunities for happiness that there's no reason to ever be a nihilist. . . atheism is nothing less than a resounding affirmation of this life."

A great book for believers who struggle with doubt.
By Jack Wathey
Daylight Atheism shines the bright, disinfecting sunlight of reason onto dark and moldy religious stereotypes about atheists and atheism. It's a pleasure to read Lee's fluid prose as he methodically tears down centuries-old castles of religious obfuscation. But Daylight Atheism is not just another rant about how much religion sucks and why it is mistaken. It is mainly a passionately argued case for atheism -- broadly defined as encompassing a skeptical, empirical and humanist worldview -- as a positive and uplifting way of life. For me this aspect of the book reaches its zenith in chapter 9, Stardust, which is nearly poetical. Another personal favorite for me is chapter 3, All Possible Worlds, which is possibly the most lucid discussion of the Problem of Evil I have ever read. Chapters 2 and 8 attack from opposite directions that most vicious of stereotypes about atheists: that they can have no morality.

Although atheists will love this book, it's clear from the final chapter, Into the Clear Air, that Lee is really trying to reach believers who struggle with doubt. If you are one of those folks, this book will show you an alternative based in reality. You owe it to yourself to read this book.

As clear a description of the Atheist/Humanist position as you'll find anywhere
By Andrew Reid
This is an excellent collection of writing on various topics in atheism and religion: How to construct a coherent secular morality, why atheism needn't be nihilistic, why the problem of evil and divine hiddenness make the existence of God unlikely, the dubious morality of the Bible and the dangers of theocracy.

This book appears to be based on many of the online essays previously published on the author's Ebon Musings pages, though obviously expanded for this edition.

I've always admired the clarity of Adam's writing on these topics. He shares Sam Harris' knack for making points effectively without descending into the rabbit-hole of too much philosophical terminology.

To the theist considering reading this book I would offer the following advice: Adam's tone can be quite angry and, while I believe he is justified, I can also appreciate that this might make it more of a struggle to get through the early chapters. Try not to take this personally as there are important points to be made and they are being made here as well as anywhere. Perhaps start with the last Chapter and then go back and read the rest.

Knocking off a star for some technical issues: Though the book has a table of contents, the Kindle doesn't recognise it as such. Also, the footnotes are not hyperlinks, which is very annoying.

Beautifully written, well argued, and somewhat overreaching
By Nolan
Daylight Atheism is blogger Adam Lee's unapologetic attempt to promote a view that his readers will be familiar with: "There may or may not exist a being we would call god. . . but so far we have no good reason to believe that there is. Moreover, there are excellent reasons to think that none of the religions human beings have ever believed in are true. . ." (11) It is also Lee's attempt to paint a positive, "daylight" brand of atheism, one that goes further than taking down religious views.

Lee argues for his conclusions in two parts. First, he highlights the morally inexcusable passages of the Bible, the argument from evil and divine hiddenness, and the evils done due directly to theistic beliefs, The second part of the book is Lee's attempt to make a positive case for atheism, with Lee answering common arguments that communism, pessimism, nihilism, amorality, and arrogance, are unavoidable given atheism, or at least common characteristics of atheists. Lee also attempts to show an optimistic atheistic view of controversial subjects like morality and death.

Where Lee shines most is in his concise, readable, and yet focused writing style. He has a talent for distilling complex arguments, like the problem of evil, into short, readable sections that cover multiple rounds of the traditional debates. Academic philosophers could learn a lot from Lee.

Still, Lee falls short in some areas, making claims that appear overly general or unwarranted by the evidence he provides. For example, he claims that religious morality is flawed because it "is not grounded in human needs. . . But obedience to the will of God" (20). On its face, that seems like an unfair blanket statement about religious morality that fails to cover an extensive segment of Eastern religious morals. What part of Buddhism's Eight Fold Path promotes obedience to God's will?

Or take Lee's assertion that when people believe that our lives are "a brief prelude to an afterlife of infinitely greater importance, their actions can't help but reflect that belief" (183). The endnote for this is to a Guardian article about Nigerian children who are victims of Christianity based witch hunts. This, even coupled with Lee's following anecdotes, hardly seems to be sufficient evidence for such a general claim, and the assertion begins to look ridiculous in light of the vast majority of genuine believers in an afterlife who still value our finite lives greatly. Convenient generalizations from limited and anecdotal evidence are sprinkled throughout the text, diluting the strength of Lee's arguments.

Despite what seem to be overreaching arguments, Lee's book is still a worthwhile contribution to the field of atheism books. He covers an impressive span of well-worn arguments, all in his beautiful, often poetic writing style. This book serves as a generally high quality, extremely readable introduction to the modern atheism theism debate, and may be enough to make wavering minds choose a side.

Star Readers: from out of the east, by D.A. Nygaard

The visit of the Magi in the Christmas story has been romanticized and sentimentalized into myth and fantasy.  In fact, many theologians dismiss the visit of the Magi as incredible, interpreting it to be a literary device.        But what if the story is authentic?      Not the romantic story commonly told; but the brief, solitary account recorded in the ancient text.  The original story doesn't number the wise men, or call them kings, or claim they found Mary and Joseph in a stable; it doesn't even include camels.  In fact, the original story doesn't claim the visitors were wise.  It identifies them as Magi--priest-sages whose mysterious research combined facts and observations with speculations and superstition.       This book respects the ancient text, treats the story of the Magi as authentic, and is built on facts obtained from historical as well as astronomical records.  It imaginatively follows the Magi from the inception of their quest in the Parthian empire through the trials along their journey, and finally, to the fallout from their visit.  The characters are a blend of fiction and non-fiction, as needed to carry the plot.        This is not a sensationalized "We Three Kings of Orient Are" story; rather, it arises from within the world of the Magi, presenting a socio-political rationale for their quest while imagining their journey.

From the Author
I was raised to honor ancient stories, so have always held a certain fascinating with the visit of the Magi in the Christmas Story.       In 1996 I began investigating the story, compiling notes of criticism of the Magi story, before stumbling upon research of astronomical history that could fit the story.  I began studying Parthian history and culture, and more importantly the far older and more lasting Chaldean culture that existed for centuries throughout the middle east.     Notes became writings.  Writings became, with the encouragement of Kendra Miller Editing, a book--Star Readers from Out of the East.

From the Back Cover
Ancient star readers are amazed by a conjunction of wandering and royal stars, and connect the mysterious event with a long-ago prophesy by an exalted member of their order. Their quest to uncover this mystery becomes a dangerous marathon into a slave empire. Deceit surrounds them and a frightening entity haunts them. The journey carries the star readers through storms, battles, crossroads and palaces before finally leading them to a one-room mud hut in an insignificant village. Darker questions then confront them. Meres, a young man of noble birth, and Jenu, a servant-healer, are swept up in this quest, and it changes their destiny. What they witness will change the world.       An innovative re-telling of the journey of the wise men to Bethlehem. Respectful of the ancient text and historically accurate, Star Readers offers a logical rationale behind one of the world's most mesmerizing stories.

About the Author
In 1995 Dan Nygaard became fascinated by the ancient story of the Magi visit to Bethlehem. Researching that story led him into Parthian history and culture. Over time, what began as notes grew into a story that has now become his fi rst novel.       Dan likes to claim he has the best job in the world--he leads Hope Community Fellowship, a missional church in Fort Collins, Colorado. Every Sunday his story-telling skills are refined by the challenge of maintaining his audience's attention. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Ridgeview Classical Schools, a public charter school; he is also the Chaplain of GRIT (grace, righteousness, intensity, toughness) Athletics.       Dan and Belinda have enjoyed 38 years of marriage. He's a voracious reader and she's a voracious ballroom dancer. They're the proud parents of two adult sons, Dustin and Benjamin; and hosted two exchange students--Jan from Germany and Diana from South Korea. The Nygaard home has been a story-telling place for people from around the world; Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, China, Puerto Rico, and Ukraine, as well as South Korea and Germany.

Read STAR READERS
By Kendra Miller
You know that feeling of satisfaction that comes with being entertained AND educated by a book? Like, "Yes! This book sucked me in, piqued my imagination, and for the time spent reading, my knowledge of a different time and place has been truly expanded." STAR READERS is one of those books. The plot keeps moving, the characters are realistic (not glamorized), and the time/place/customs of ancient Parthia have been well-researched (I know because I did a few Google searches while reading). STAR READERS is an investment as much as a luxury.

Could this have happened?
By Diane Aden
This story had several of the elements that make a good book for me. It had mystery, history, the triumph of good over evil, and a great story of love that was patient and enduring. I particularly enjoyed learning some of the history of that region and the battles that ensued in that part of history. I found myself glued to the book until the end waiting to see the final outcome. As a person who reads 2-4 books a week, it is rare that I actually get one that give me a pause to really think through the implications and possible outcomes of the story. I highly recommend it.

What a wonderful conclusion to a meaningful and intriguing tale
By Antonio
I just finished this book. What a wonderful conclusion to a meaningful and intriguing tale! Star Readers captivates you from the outset and maintains your interest as it unveils the inner workings of an empire, a culture, long gone and then leads you to the discovery of the child that the Parthians had seen coming in the stars' alignment. However, this book is much more than a retelling of the story of the "wise men" from the east. It is an innovative telling of what might have been and at the same time giving us insight into a people about whom most know very little. Dan Nygaard's book has added to our body of knowledge regarding a critical time in history, and he has done it creatively and and in an engaging manner. I highly recommend it. My only suggestion is not to allow too much time to pass between picking up the novel as it is full of much new information in terns of characters and setting.
