wow, what a find

I'm not a big self-help enthusiast myself because I feel like most of the major reads in the category lack a certain authenticity and therefore, if I end up reading them, I labor through them. Magac's work on the other hand blows my mind because it's both honest and entertaining - that's a tough balance when the subject matter is as deep as soul-searching. I don't read as much as I'd like to, so when I get a chance, it'd better be good and this book totally delivers. I'm glad I read it over the first weekend of the year because I feel inspired to make some real positive gains in 2015. Glad I found this treasure, definitely recommend to anyone looking to re-charge.

And it also breaks down - in simple steps - how you can start making changes in your life by making small changes to your home or office. What are you living with that sucks? Inspiring

I bought this book because the title really spoke to me, and it was an inspiration. It got me so excited to go through every room in my house and edit (severely). The author compares clutter in your physical environment to your mental and physical health in such a brilliant way that it makes you feel that you can conquer some of the most daunting projects, starting with easy little steps, and that you will be much better for it.
I find myself looking at everything differently- how many of these do I need? Do I even like this? Why do I still have it? It's amazing how easily this translates from throw pillows into bigger life choices.

About the Author

Mat Dry obtained his safari-guiding credentials from the Field Guide's Association of Southern Africa in 2007. He worked on Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa for six months and then decided that he wanted to see more of Africa. In 2008, he joined one of Africa's premier overlanding companies, Africa Travel Company. For nearly four years he worked with ATC as a guide in both East and Southern Africa until deciding to create his own company, TIA Safaris. Mat now divides his time between educating people about Africa in the States, and taking clients on the trips of their lives into the Africa he knows and loves. Forget it - waste of $$

The first TIA was OK but this one is poorly written with filler and line by line repeats. Pages of e-mails are reproduced verbatim - filler. Wow he got to meet Roger Federer - what has that got to do with Africa? More filler. But what is really disappointing is that Mat has completely forgotten his training as a Guide. First DO NOT HARM NOR HARASS THE ANIMALS. Tackling monitor lizards endangers the them and those dumb enough to be entertained by such irresponsible behavior. Chasing a bull elephant at night with a flash camera - dumber!
Time to grow up and treat animals with some respect - Mat that means you.

Let Yourself Be Transported to Africa.

Mr. Dry once again transports his readers to Africa. He has the unique ability to make you feel as though you are really there sharing these amazing experiences with him. The chapter involving the Nile monitor lizards is hilarious and has given me a different outlook on these primitive creatures. Another incredible story occurs in the chapter entitled " Tomorrow is Another Day", when Mr. Dry needs to prove his marksmanship to receive his qualifications for Lead Rifle. Talk about never giving up! Another great read from Mr. Dry. You will not be disappointed.

Weaver was working as an engineer at a carousel in Niagara Falls, N.Y., when he was shot and killed. William's father joined in on the search for the killer as a newly-appointed deputy. The search crossed several states and involved several suspects over the following year. The book additionally tells the story of other fatal accidents where a carousel was involved. In 1914, a stray bullet killed a father watching a carousel with his children in Greensboro, N.C. A carousel pole fell down and gravely injured a Rochester N.Y. man in 1900. In 1892, a four-year-old jumped between wooden horses and was severed by a merry-go-round cable in Camden, NY. An electrician working on an Atlantic City carousel in 1918 was crushed in its gears, while the machine was spinning with riders. While this may book details ‘the darker side of carousels’, it's an interesting look at an earlier time.

Fascinating history

“Murder at the Carousel,” by Linda Bartash-Dawley is a fascinating and gripping history book about Carousel murders. My earliest delightful memory is of a carousel in a quaint park. I love Carousels, not just for the rides, but for its long history, amazing artwork, and music. When I purchased this book I thought it was a fictional story. However, I was enthralled by the history and my heart went out to those that lost their lives on and around Carousels.

Bartash-Dawley did a phenomenal job in discovering and researching long forgotten murders. I love the newspaper accounts, historical facts of the cities where the carousels stood, and photos. Well done!

Murder at the carousel and other true stories
The author is a carousel enthusiast and did a good job researching the dark history of the carousel across the USA, in the late 1800’s and early 1900. Most chapters were fascinating. It was hard to read about the children that died in carousel accidents.
The newspaper accounts were a nice touch, and the old photos postcards. And to read about the way murders and accidentals were viewed and dealt with back in the old days was interesting.

Composing his articles from field notes and letters, Dr. Lenker tells in great detail his regiment's fighting at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, and Nashville. The editors, assisted by students, have transcribed and edited the memoir from the only surviving newspaper articles. They have also provided annotations and written introductory essays.

This is an unusual find--a war diary written by a beautiful writer and thinker, who had a big heart and a love of life. The diary is based on notes, but written much later, after the author went back to school and became a doctor. The small sections of the diary move quickly and offer such a variety of stories--from details of battle and what it felt to be in the midst of fire, to stories of how the Northern soldiers changed their views and got to understand the plight of the slaves, to the author's fascinating description of Abraham Lincoln, when he got to hear him speak, to tales of how he cured himself from serious illness when the army doctors gave up on his case by eating peaches for weeks. The author's compassion and wisdom come though on every page. You don't have to be a civil war buff to enjoy this highly intelligent meditation on life, war and a troubled part of our past.

A solid intro book, but not comprehensive or unique.

The Nimzo-Indian can be played in conservative solid fashion or in a more aggressive, unbalancing manner in which black plays for the win early in the middlegame. This book is designed to introduce the basic ideas, themes, and philosophy of the Nimzo. It is not loaded with the latest theory nor will it help titled players learn something they didn't already know.

However, this book really is a nice way to 'start out' in one of the best defenses against 1.d4 and is obviously critical for white players who play 1.d4/ 2.c4/ 3.Nc3. Chris Ward has a lifetime's experience with this opening and it shows. He is also a fairly entertaining writer, which is more than more chess authors can say for themselves.

Although, the book doesn't run 'deep' (nor does it claim to) it does present all the pertinent variations within the Nimzo so that you can choose which lines you want to play or research further.

This book will not be enough for strong club players to just hit the ground running. You will still (of course) need to check open resources like ECO, NCO, or the TWIC for modern theory of whichever lines strike your fancy. If you are already 1800+, then look elsewhere for you Nimzo knowledge. This book is really meant for lower rated players.

As a side note, the Sherbakov-Jakovenko game is not tactically flawed as a previous reviewer mentioned. If he had tried to play the lines with Fritz analysizing for more than a minute he would find that Grandmasters might know a bit more than some people give them credit for. The ideas involving a quick b4 in that game look winning for white at first but then the computer (and strong GM's like Onischuk and Gurevich)realize black gets the material back since the knight on a8 isn't going anywhere. Also, since black ends up with 2 queenside connected passers in the coming endgame. More than compensating and in fact, forcing play to take a perpetual to avoid getting burned. A very playable line for black.

Excellent for both Novice and Club Player

I've been a chess coach for over 30 years and own most of the "Starting Out" series.This one on the Nimzo-Indian Defence by Chris Ward is written in an everyday language thats easy to understand, and has lots of diagrams as well as illustrative games to show you the plans and objectives of each main line with crystal clear clarity.By doing this you wont have to memorize countless seemingly meaningless variations as is the case with many other opening books.Their is no safer reply to 1.d4 than the Nimzo-Indian Defence,a favorite of many world champions, which has numerous different ways you can steer the game to suit your style of play.If you want to take your opponent out of his comfort zone, or are just looking for a solid way to get an exceelent game in the opening phase, this book is for you.For the novice and club player as well as the Master, author Chris Ward writes in a down to earth easy to understand style.176 pages long and an excellent investment.

Sufficient understanding

I own many books from the ''Starting Out'' serie and they fit my needs. Being a class B player, I need a general and practical understanding of the different opening set ups I use. This serie is well written and the strategical and tactical concepts are very helpful. I use it as the basic of my futur work if I ever get strong enough to need more detailed informations.

Honest...Vulnerable...Beautiful

I applaud Kim for telling it like it is. As a personal friend, I know that this family's journey is riddled with pain and heartache, and Kim doesn't sugar-coat it. Yet she does not rob the reader of sharing in their joys along the way. Their hearts for following God shine from the pages of this book. True to her heart, Kim is bold, honest, and vulnerable in her account. This is the endearing story of a family who - against all odds - chose to trust in a God who doesn't make mistakes.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming!

Well meaning people can say the dumbest things! I'm glad this precious family could draw strength from God in spite of those portraying Him as a type of Zeus throwing arbitrary lightning bolts at innonocent children.
This heartbreaking account is well written.

This is a wonderful book. It is heartfelt and it's as if I'm on the journey with this beautiful family. I met Jack at rady's hospital With my therapy dog Truffkes. I pray every day that he' will be walking and live a normal life.He's a brave little boy !
