The author-at that time a physician practicing in nearby Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania-had been invited by the editor to describe his service fifty years earlier in an Ohio regiment fighting in the western theater. Composing his articles from field notes and letters, Dr. Lenker tells in great detail his regiment's fighting at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, and Nashville. The editors, assisted by students, have transcribed and edited the memoir from the only surviving newspaper articles. They have also provided annotations and written introductory essays.

This is an unusual find--a war diary written by a beautiful writer and thinker, who had a big heart and a love of life. The diary is based on notes, but written much later, after the author went back to school and became a doctor. The small sections of the diary move quickly and offer such a variety of stories--from details of battle and what it felt to be in the midst of fire, to stories of how the Northern soldiers changed their views and got to understand the plight of the slaves, to the author's fascinating description of Abraham Lincoln, when he got to hear him speak, to tales of how he cured himself from serious illness when the army doctors gave up on his case by eating peaches for weeks. The author's compassion and wisdom come though on every page. You don't have to be a civil war buff to enjoy this highly intelligent meditation on life, war and a troubled part of our past.
