You won’t find these quotes in the history books about Franklin: “Those Doctrines delivered by our Saviour and the Apostles, which are absolutely necessary to be believed, are so very plain, that the meanest Capacities, may easily understand ’em...” “Christ gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all Iniquity, and purify to himself a peculiar People zealous of Good-Works. And there is scarcely a Chapter in the whole Gospels or Epistles from which this Doctrine can’t be prov’d...” “I am conscious I believe in Christ, and exert my best Endeavours to understand his Will aright, and strictly to follow it...” “Christ by his Death and Sufferings has purchas’d for us those easy Terms and Conditions of our Acceptance with God, propos’d in the Gospel, to wit, Faith and Repentance...” In The Christian Pamphlets of Benjamin Franklin, Bill Fortenberry has provided us with three of the most intriguing pamphlets that Franklin ever wrote. In them, Franklin reveals religious views that few historians are even aware of and fewer still are willing to admit.

A Polymath Defender of the Faith
By Jennifer Reeser
A fascinating, three-pamphlet collection of religious writings. In these, we read Benjamin Franklin's eloquent defense of a Christian minister who was charged as being a Deist -- a charge which Franklin openly mocks as "absurd and ridiculous." Also included is much passionate insistence on what he calls "holy Scripture" as the ultimate authority to govern him and his fellows. Intellectual and emotionally moving in his references to "our King," "our Savior," "our Lord;" deeply reverent and loyal in his references to Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Franklin clearly presents himself as a "Defender of the Faith" in these tracts, reinforcing the core doctrines of orthodox Christendom such as original sin, the fall of Man, the perfect, unassailable nature of Christ, Christ's atonement as "mediator" between God and Man, the absolute reality of divine revelation, and the benefits of the Holy Spirit to the believer’s life. Says Franklin, “But they ask, What are the Benefits and Advantages of the Christian Revelation if the Heathen World living up to the light of Nature and Reason may be saved?” thereby giving the reader a rare and precious glimpse into the evangelical side of this profound genius, the “First American,” whose contributions in the areas of science, diplomacy, statesmanship and letters have left an indelible impression upon the course of human events, for all time. Invaluable, essential reading and resource for serious students of American letters and heritage, particularly as they apply to the founding.

Fascinating Story about a Remarkable Woman, September 13, 2015 By M. E. Norris

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Eleanor (Penny) Lopes Akahloun's memoir. It is a fascinating story about a remarkable woman. Ms. Akahloun, a Cape Verdean American, devoted 43 years of her life to serve as a career diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service. She joined the Foreign Service at a time when the institution lacked diversity among its diplomatic corp. She overcame tremendous odds through perseverance, hard work, and a positive outlook-- characteristics which would help her tackle challenges throughout her life. Ms. Akahloun is someone who believes that we all have the capacity to enjoy life to the fullest. Her story is inspiring without being corny or unreal. Anyone who reads her book will take heart, no matter what their race, creed, gender, or age.

The format of the book is akin to a long interview. The author begins by relating her family background, including the astounding story of how her grandfather journeyed to America from Cape Verde. She also tells us about her parents, remarkable individuals who worked and loved hard, providing the author with a nurturing and disciplined environment. Most of the rest of her book is about her life and adventures in the various countries in which she lived and served. These included Morocco (where she met her husband), Uruguay, Kenya, and China. The author intersperses the story of her life with interesting information on the political and economic situation of the country in which she was posted as well as the U.S. foreign policy goals in the country. This makes for an enriching history lesson without bogging readers down in too much detail.

I hope that many people will read Ms. Akahloun's story and will be as strengthened and nourished as I was in reading it.

Stunning Life and World Experiences
By judith Mudd-Krijgelmans
The Magic of Dreams: An American Diplomat's Journey is the story of an American woman succeeding against steep odds. It's as applicable to a girl facing the world in 2015 as it was in 1965. All young people need to believe that they have a unique contribution to make to the world. Many don't because they suffer from lack of confidence, weak love of self and low self-esteem. Ms. Akahloun's fortune was to be imbued with these by visionary parents. She dared to dream big as a child and succeeded.

Most significantly, the book is a rare account of Cape Verdean African Americans. The author's ancestor came freely from that Portuguese colony to America during slavery. Akahloun relates her family history in animated detail and with a feeling so deep that it made me feel the connection to her long, distant past. The Magic of Dreams is thus a seldom seen piece of history that should interest educators, historians and researchers. It belongs on the list of new and rediscovered narratives about the lives of free blacks who lived during slavery, on the same shelf as the recently published and cinematically dramatized Twelve Years a Slave. These narratives of the origins of unknown "free people of color " have become increasingly available because of the Internet in the last decade and are filling in the blanks of the African American saga.

Upbeat and optimistic, Akahloun recounts her dream-come-true journey from small town New England to Foreign Service posts and travel to all seven continents. To be clear: hers is not the story of one who began at the top of the Foreign Service; as a secretary; she staked out her claim to make her way into the ranks of the Foreign Service and after many years did. Her book conjures up unimaginable experiences along the way -bridal splendor in Morrocco as well as a wedding back home, her young son sneaking through the barricades at Tiananmen in Beijing. Optimistic and positive, she is nonetheless candid about racial and sexists slights. The beginning of her book shows what it was like for most women at the Department of State before the changes of 1972 brought equal opportunities.
ack
Akahloun's book is the story of "every woman," who attempts to balance marriage, family, and work. Even for those who know what it is like to serve in the diplomatic corps, her recollections provide new insights. Anyone looking for the unique and fulfilling life Akahloun describes ought to read The Magic of Dreams. It is stunning!

The Magic of Dreams - A Remarkable Journey
By Paul M. Doherty
The Magic of Dreams: An American Diplomat’s Journey (Xlibris, 2014)
By Eleanor Lopes Akahloun
Review by Paul Doherty
February 2015

Memoir and travel writing are enjoyable genres that allow us an inside view of the writer's life experiences and adventures. The Magic of Dreams: An American Diplomat's Journey by Eleanor Lopes "Penny" Akahloun (Xlibris, 2014) combines the best of both genres. Penny has a wonderful story to tell and she tells it exceptionally well.

What makes Penny's story particularly remarkable is how she transcended her humble beginnings in a four-room "cottage" with an outhouse to the life of a diplomat representing her country capably and enthusiastically over a variety of foreign and domestic postings spanning 43 years. Joining the State Department's Foreign Service in 1965, Penny in no way fit the mold of the typical Foreign Service employee of that time. For starters, she was an African-American female in a world dominated by white males often from a privileged background and with the best private-school education.

Penny encountered prejudice early on in her life in her home town of Onset, near Cape Cod in Massachusetts, where she lived in a segregated and isolated community of immigrants from Cape Verde. Cape Verdeans were the first African immigrant group to come to the United States voluntarily starting in the late 19th century. They did not share the experience of being enslaved people like the majority of African Americans. Nevertheless, they were looked upon as the same and suffered equal prejudices.

It is clear that Penny possessed an extraordinary sense of purpose and the drive that often accompanies it to overcome her early circumstances. Fresh out of junior college, she didn't take no when she was not permitted to rent an apartment in a prestigious building in Boston because she was black. Penny knew the building had vacancies and, with perseverance, she ultimately secured a place. After joining the Foreign Service, she experienced numerous institutional and personal challenges but, with characteristic determination, she faced them head-on and always moved forward. Seeking every opportunity to improve and expand her expertise, Penny rose steadily through the Foreign Service ranks and ultimately retired at the equivalent rank of full Colonel in the United States military.

In her book, Penny takes us on a remarkable journey through each of her many postings on a number of continents. The reader travels with her along the way through all the colorful adventures, surprises, heartbreak, joy, disillusionment and triumph.

Penny describes herself as an "ordinary" person. She is anything but. Her resolve, fortitude, and, above all, her steadfast faith, have led her on a captivating journey and, in The Magic of Dreams: An American Diplomat's Journey, we are fortunate to be able to share that journey with her.

these ancestors “persevered when all seemed lost and eventually were rewarded” with wonderful lives. Penny
By Dennis P Halpin
Penny Akahloun clearly demonstrates that she is a Woman for All Seasons in this stellar work “The Magic of Dreams.” She paints on her verbal canvass one life’s journey, with all its cultural diversity and international challenges, in the United States Foreign Service. In that regard, this book represents an indispensable guide for any young person who is contemplating a career within the State Department or any of a number of other international agencies or businesses.

However, the book is far more than being just another Foreign Service narrative. One must move through the layers, as in peeling an onion, to find the gems of wisdom that provide guidance for what Ms. Akahloun calls “a wondrous life’s journey.” Penny’s book is a compass for those willing to follow and she is both a path finder and teacher. There are narratives for those who face the challenges of immigration to a new country; there are tips on finding one’s family roots for the growing number of ancestry.com enthusiasts among the baby boomers; and there are strategies of how to deal with, and maneuver through, a large governmental bureaucracy, especially at times when challenging bosses put up road blocks to both career development and personal fulfillment.

And Penny is not afraid to address some of the more critical aspects of life abroad which impact the hearth and home. There is a compelling narrative on the special challenges of international marriage and bridging cross-cultural differences. There is guidance on dealing with the special family challenges of schooling, health, spousal employment and aging parents for those who have embarked on international careers, especially in the confines of a large bureaucracy. There is also a poignant personal story from the age-old saga of coming to America with an added twist: Ms. Akahloun’s forbearers, arriving from the Afro-Portuguese cultural blend of the Cape Verde islands had to confront the color barriers of early Twentieth Century America, barriers which they found unfamiliar, disturbing and at times incomprehensible. Yet, as Penny so aptly advises at the conclusion of her work, these ancestors “persevered when all seemed lost and eventually were rewarded” with wonderful lives. Penny, through her delightful narratives and compelling stories, which lead the reader ultimately to all seven continents, is summing you, like a modern Pied Piper, on an unforgettable journey in this 362-page volume. I suggest you pick up the book and begin reading so you too can find “the Magic of Dreams.”

Dennis Halpin is an ex-Peace Corps volunteer, retired Foreign Service officer, former Congressional advisor, a magazine writer, and, most fortunately, a friend of Penny.

Danger Unlimited, by John Byrne

In December 1959, the Carson family meets explorer Mike Worley in South America to investigate an ancient spaceship that crashed in the Amazon jungle in the distant past. The ship's systems trap the four and expose them to a mysterious substance called "Gunk," intended to adapt the ship's original crew to the new environment. After brief exposure to the Gunk they escape, but it gives each of them superpowers that they use to fight for good as the original Danger Unlimited. But the story only begins there. Set in the futuristic 2061, flashbacks tell the story of what happened on Earth after the discovery of the Gunk, and how exposure to its powers causes the manifestation of super powers. The "new" Danger Unlimited super group seeks to uncover the fate of their predecessors while fighting to rid the Earth of the alien invaders that have overrun the planet! Also included in this collection are Babe #1-4 and Babe 2 #1-2, bringing all of John Byrne's Danger Unlimited action together for the first time ever!

A thrilling all ages tale from a time when guns and blobs and blood and death and image took over comics over substance... except for Savage Dragon and Hellboy. This is all Ages in the vein of Fantastic Four John Byrne takes nostalgia and smashes it into the Grimmest story humanly possible... DANGER UNLIMITED, potential untapped, and my old fan fave BABE
By H. Bala
As John Byrne mentions in this trade's bitter-tinged foreword, Dark Horse Comics' Legend imprint was a failed experiment, its quick demise due to one (or several?) of the founding members' lack of timely contribution and the comic book depression which murdered so many independent comics in the mid-90s. The Legend imprint was supposed to be a shared world peopled by Byrne's Danger Unlimited, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, and Art Adams' Monkeyman & O'Brien. As it turns out, not much sharing actually went on, although Hellboy has a dialogue-less cameo in DANGER UNLIMITED.

The very cool thing with this trade is that not only does it reprint the four issues which made up the DANGER UNLIMITED series, but it also collects the four-issued BABE mini-series and the two-issued BABE 2 mini-series. Bonus stuff includes the original covers to all the issues, as well as the aforementioned John Byrne foreword. However, the Torch of Liberty stories backing up DANGER UNLIMITED are not included. Admittedly, DANGER UNLIMITED didn't make as much noise as others of Byrne's superhero groups, but then again NEXT MEN and Byrne's legendary stint at FANTASTIC FOUR went on for significantly longer runs. With only four issues, DANGER UNLIMITED manages to tweak your bump of curiousity. Byrne admits in the foreword that Danger Unlimited was patterned after the Fantastic Four, Marvel's first superhero family, about whom he missed writing. But DU quickly found its own voice, cutting back and forth between storytelling in the present and flashbacks to the past, with its catchy premise of a future Earth humbled by extraterrestrial control and no superheroes in sight. If only given enough issues, who knows where Byrne could've taken this series.

The flashbacks mostly deal with Danger Unlimited's origins and final battle. In 1959, Dr. Carson, his children Calvin and Connie, and explorer Mike Worley gain extraordinary abilites from exposure to alien gunk in a crashlanded spaceship. Dr. Carson (Doc Danger) has his intelligence immeasurably expanded; Calvin (Thermal) now can control his body temperature; Connie (Miss Mirage) becomes an illusion caster; and Mike Worley (Hunk) transforms into a superstrong, rock-skinned being. For many years they fought the good fight as Danger Unlimited, until the team's final battle with deadly enemy Umbra. We never do find out how that battle ends (much less who Umbra is). We do learn that Calvin incurs a grave injury and is put in some sort of cryogenic freeze by Doc Danger, and that Doc Danger in desperation then places a time lock on and seals off the Danger Unlimited headquarters.

The story really kicks off 75 years later, when the time lock expires and the DU complex is rendered accessible. From its interior, anomalous energy signatures suddenly crop up, leading to an investigation by a military containment unit. What the soldiers find is a resuscitated Calvin Carson, suffering from a loss of memory and thermal powers.

Calvin is in for even more disorienting times. It's the year 2060, and the alien race Xlerii (pronounced almost like "celery") now runs the planet, with the earth's humanity having effectively surrendered decades ago when all the superheroes mysteriously vanished back in 2011. Now in this future Calvin's awakening brings about the rebirth of earth's superpowered humans as Calvin finds himself a focal point in the fight to wrest the planet back from Xlerii occupation. The final issue closes with a new incarnation of Danger Unlimited vowing to do just this.

Except that we'll never know how this turns out.

John Byrne writes and draws the thing, all four issues of it. DANGER UNLIMITED is a portrait of untapped potential. Here, four issues aren't long enough to lend much character development, not when the cast of characters is this huge, and not when Byrne has to also lay groundwork for the multiple plot points and establish the world-building elements. Having said that, the most interesting character is probably new superhuman Belebet's folksy great-grandmother. The final issue leaves us with a jarred, frustrated feeling because it's so obvious that Byrne had intended to tell so much more of the story. Instead we're left with an intriguing premise, an outline of a revered superhero family, scanty superhero action, and the promise of a shared corner of a universe which never really came to be. Just enough to tantalize you and to make you believe that, if this series had only been given more of a chance, DANGER UNLIMITED could've been something awesome.

On the other hand, BABE's story is told on a breezier, more rollicking beat. In the first few pages John Byrne introduces Babe in such a way that you instantly get hooked into the mystery of her... who she is, what she is. Somewhere in the periphery there's an airplane crash, and that event is linked to the sudden appearance one dark stormy night of a tall, gorgeous, naked red-head. Who almost gets run over by sleazy Hollywood agent Ralph Rowan, one of those creeps you'd most of the time happily scrape off the bottom of your shoe. Except that I guess Rowan does hide a smidgen of gallant, because he does the right thing by the enigmatic girl, drops her off at the police station. But not before his calling her "Babe" had rubbed off, to the point that the girl now touts "Babe" as her name. Babe is something of a Tabula Rasa, an innocent blank slate. She doesn't talk much, her entire lexicon of words consisting of that same word "Babe...?" - with the appropriate inflection used to suit a variety of emotions. And as we soon learn, Babe is fantastically strong and durable.

I really like the lighthearted tone of this series. John Byrne injects a bit of slapstick, from the way she first demonstrates her great strength to an appearance on the David Letterman show (which turns her into an overnight media sensation) to her going up against icky green bulbous-domed aliens (who themselves smack of spoofy). And it's a good thing that the mood carries that serving of tongue-in-cheek because Babe's origin is pretty much an exercise in far-fetchedness and wouldn't have gone over well in a story that takes itself more seriously. However, Byrne's killer art does go a ways in lending weight to Babe's adventures. And, as he's already shown in his time with FANTASTIC FOUR and SHE-HULK, Byrne can draw gorgeous powerful ladies.

In BABE 2, Babe returns to action when cyborg alligators burst out of the New York City sewers (that's right, cyborg alligators!!!). Now, in the first mini-series, one of the characters featured is the super-heroine Blonde Bombshell (or the aged version of her, anyway), and since she appeared in the pages of DANGER UNLIMITED, this means that Babe officially shares continuity with DU (and, by extension, she resides in the Legend imprint universe). To place Babe even more firmly in that continuity, a certain Icthyo sapien from B.P.R.D. shows up in BABE 2, as well as a Monkeyman & O'Brien villain (the one who's pretty much a Mole Man ripoff). And then, if there's still any doubts, there's that last page in the second issue. Anyway, it's more fun with Babe, as she gets down and dirty and spectacularly muddy beneath the sewers of New York City, trying to prevent the destruction of Times Square. Unlike in the first mini-series, Babe has more dialogue here, the dychotomy being that she was more intriguing when she wasn't saying much.

I don't know that John Byrne will ever write new stories about Danger Unlimited or Babe; his time with the Legend imprint seems to have soured him some. This is probably all we'll get of these characters, which is too bad. I like DANGER UNLIMITED for its sci-fi premise and I really like BABE for the central character and for that sense of good-natured fun which infused her stories. If you haven't read these stories before, you're in for a time-capsule treat. Absorbing stories, characters with potential, and, as always, excellent art - all by John Byrne, long may his British-bred beard bristle.

John Byrne--WORLD's Best Storyteller!!
By S. Varela
I will never get tired of a good, old-fashioned John Byrne story. He is always able to take and insignificant book/character and give it cosmic importance. Where many writers and/or artists have failed to craft an interesting story--John Byrne consistently SUCCEEDS! When you read a John Byrne story, you never want it to end. Thank you, Mr. Byrne for all the years you put into the industry elevating your craft.

The Civil War Out My Window: Diary of Mary Henry, by Jeremy T.K. Farley

The daughter of Joseph Henry, one of America's most renowned scientists, Mary Henry was 21-years-old when her family moved into the only castle in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution Building. A prolific writer and astute observer, Mary began recording a diary in 1858, including a daily log of her personal reflections, events at the Smithsonian and conversations she had shared with many of the most influential leaders in America. It would have been impossible for the youthful lady, filled with juvenile yearnings and wanderlust, to have imagined the unspeakable horrors that would soon fill the pages of her blank diary, as she penned her first entry in November 1858. Mary’s entries include personal conversations with Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant, common citizens and captured southern troops. A staunch unionist and American patriot, the young woman’s diary reveals the incredible dilemma held by millions of Americans throughout the war between the states – as she often sympathized with the southern plight, mourned Confederate causalities and criticized the Lincoln administration’s every move. Though her writings provide one of the greatest insights into the Civil War in the past quarter-century, Mary’s diary is far more than a collection of random thoughts on matters of science and politics. Her diary is a story of both a young woman and a struggling nation coming to age in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Excellent read from a different perspective
By Johnny C
I love seeing the war unfold through the eyes of Mary Henry. My ancestors fought for the South in the Civil War and she shows a surprising, to me at least, sympathy for the south at times.

One of the things I loved about this diary is the insiders view of Washington during these years. That's something I'd never read much about. The Smithsonian is high on my list of favorite places and the fact that her father was it's director added to my enjoyment of the book.

I think anyone purchasing this book will enjoy the young ladies thoughts as events unfold.

The Road and Beyond: The Expanded Book-Club Edition of The Road to You, by Marilyn Brant

THE ROAD AND BEYOND is the expanded book-club edition of THE ROAD TO YOU by New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Marilyn Brant. This novel contains not only the completed original story set in the late 1970s, but it also includes the brand-new present-day tale of Aurora, now a mature & married woman with 2 adult sons, who must confront her worst parental nightmare.* One Disappearance Had Been Enough To Last Her A Lifetime... Aurora Gray is no stranger to tragedy. In the summer of 1976, when she was just sixteen, her world turned upside down when her big brother Gideon and his best friend Jeremy disappeared. For two years, there's no word from either of them. No trace of their whereabouts. But then, shortly after her high-school graduation, she unexpectedly finds her brother's journal and sees that it's been written in again. Recently. By him. There are secret messages coded within the journal's pages and Aurora, who is unusually perceptive and a natural puzzle solver, is determined to follow where they lead, no matter what the cost. She confides in the only person she feels might help her interpret the clues: Donovan McCafferty, Jeremy's older brother and a guy she's always been drawn to...even against her better judgment. The two of them set out on a road trip of discovery and danger, heading westward along America's historic Route 66 in search of their siblings and the answers to questions they haven't dared to ask aloud. The mystery they uncover will forever change the course of their lives.  ...But Now It Was Happening Again Decades later, in the summer of 2014, fifty-four-year-old Aurora receives a terrifying phone call--her adult son Charlie is missing--and this news inevitably brings the memories of her adolescent years rushing back. Haunting recollections she'd hoped to keep buried. Were the choices she'd made in her youth responsible for her son's disappearance now? And how on earth can she find him--quickly--so that she might be able to prevent the trauma of the past from repeating itself? * EXCERPT: Pasadena, California ~ Friday, August 15, 2014 No one else was home, of course, when I got the call that my twenty-eight-year-old son was missing. "The Benson Plastics people are already here for the eleven o'clock presentation, but Charlie isn't," Gloria, the company's secretary, informed me, her piercing voice tinged with an edge of hysteria. I'd only spoken with the woman on the phone twice before, but I got the distinct impression that her circuits were forever at risk of being overloaded. "He's not answering his cell?" I asked, surprised more than anything, actually, because both of my boys had their iPhones all but super-glued to their palms. "Aurora, I've tried to reach him for an hour and a half," Gloria insisted, the shrillness in her tone rising like high notes in a chorus and dancing for dear life on the other end of the line. "There's no answer at home. His cell goes straight to voicemail. And I even called his girlfriend because she's his first contact. She has no idea where Charlie is either. You're his second contact, so I hope you'll know where we can reach him." For a long, uncomfortable moment I was distracted by something ridiculous. The fact that I was only my son's second contact. Well, he was practically living with Cassandra, so I supposed it made sense that she was his first. But still... Then the deeper meaning of the secretary's comments seeped in. No one knew where Charlie was. I tried to be calm, reasonable, rational and not like some TV sitcom mother who'd overreact to everything. But, naturally, given my family's history, that was impossible. I fought back the panic and asked, "Was he at work yesterday?" Gloria said he was there when she'd left the office at 4:20. My mind began reeling with that ever-present parental worry, which spun a dangerous path from my head to my gut. The questions started, and it was like 1976 all over again.

One person, two stories, thirty plus years apart. Fear and terror, mystery, and heartache for a woman. One story of love.
By Blogging Under the Shade Tree
The Road and Beyond more than tells the original The Road to You from the point of view of looking back thirty plus years in the future, in reflection. A second story line is added in the current day setting that reverberates every bit as much with the angst, mystery, and fingernail biting as the original story. This time, though, instead of the reader just seeing the pain and despair of the sister as she once again relives the mystery of the wild summer thirty some odd years ago, she also rips the reader’s heart out with a mother’s added layer of grief and despair as she desperately tries to locate her missing son.

All the old feelings and memories of the protagonist’s youth came bubbling up like Old Faithful’s Geyser. How could she face the new emergency without allowing the fears and memories of the past taint her thinking and the decisions she must make. Once again the loss and the aloneness threatened to overwhelm her in the darkness of the night.

Once again she has to go back and relive and remember the worst years of her life. The most heart pounding summer of her youth threaten to overwhelm her as we, the reader are dragged along on a wild ride across the United States in a hot ride with a hotter hunk who simmers with sex appeal and everything a young eighteen year-old’s heart and hormones could ever dream of while they try to locate information about their brothers who have been missing and declared dead for two years. His simmering silence and her smart mouth make for banter that keeps you laughing and wondering. The mysteries that meet them at every curve of the road, throws danger and risk in their way that no innocent backwater young lady should ever have to face. With every turn of the page you wonder if they will survive or if they will find the answers the want to hear.

With the addition of the current day over-lay story line, The Road and Beyond was a whole new book.

4.5 stars: mysteries galore along Route 66 from age 18 to age 60
By S. L. Majczan
Well, here I am barely able to see through my tears! I had read the shorter book, The Road to You last year and then won a copy of this expanded version in a raffle on a blog.

There are two missing persons' mysteries going on in this story, told from a mother's viewpoint looking back some 30 years and also relating her present day trauma. AND I was also asking myself, "Who is her husband? Did she ever marry Donovan?" We are not really told that until the end, as the author continues to refer to "her husband" in talking about the second/later mystery.

The tale is full of angst and one must really concentrate to keep all the clues, the names, the aliases, etc. straight. There are lies to Aurora's parents, excuses made at work to get time off and a journal whose words, dates, and symbols only a code breaker could unravel. And, like the protagonists, you just can't trust anyone. Witness faces that seem to look familiar and voices that have accents but what are we hearing under that "false" accent? And then there is the lingering angst of a first crush, not forgotten, and the sexual chemistry going on between Aurora and Donovan (or is it just on her side?) while they spend days and nights in each other's company, trusting no one and having only each other with whom to share "everything".

The "mob", motorcyclists tailing them, arson, murders, explosives, no bodies or unidentified bodies, spliced together movies, suppressed news of interest and post cards from along Route 66...all making for a page turning story to draw you in.

Does Gideon, one of the missing, ever come home? - The answer to that is what made me sob. But I am a mother and the position is a unique one and some children just don't realize that the strings are never really cut.

I could not remember enough of this story to make this easy reading. So it was as if I had a new book in my hands and I clearly enjoyed it.

There is a Q&A at the end as well as a list of the songs loved or hated by our protagonists. You younger readers may have to download some of the best music ever to get feel for the times.

I fell in love with this book
By Gina Rose 1
I fell in love with this book, the 1st book left me wanting more and this filled in some of those gaps for me. How they went on to build a beautiful life together and yet after all this time Aurora is still haunted by what happened to her brother Gideon in 1978. Marilyn, has a way of drawing you into her books, and making you enjoy the story and getting lost in them. I am hoping to see more from her

Interesting
By P. Blevins
Life Hacks Handbook : How to deal with the worst case situations of the 21st century is by Maria Llorens and Hugo Villabona. This is a book of suggestions to help your life become easier. The list of topics ranges from “How to decide what to watch on Netflix” to “How to avoid looking like a fool at the water fountain” to “How to avoid people”. It is an interesting book and one you would have to have on hand for future reference to get the best use out of it. The authors did a lot of research to give an answer to these situations. It is not meant for you to follow it closely; but to give you a direction to start in to solve your own problems. There are some very interesting suggestions.

This book was
By MGM
a cute read. I must concede that I did learn some handy things throughout (I was unsure at first what to expect--actual helpful ideas or mostly satire). Very simple and easy to understand. The graphs and images were a welcome change to the mostly repetitive structure of the book. But yeah, overall a more informative read than was expected, and I could imagine going back to certain sections of this as starting points, in the right situation of course.

Caught a typo on page 134 ("baby power" instead of "baby powder", though I appreciated the imagery of a baby summoning its powers to remove all the sand from my body after a day at the beach)

I do value the work that was put into the research and I imagine the authors had a swell time experimenting and concluding, which is cool as heck. Swell job, godspeed

great visuals and useful advice
By AK
The book is easy to read and to quickly move to the relevant topic. The publisher, Mango, has done an excellent job with the colors and layout. I look forward to seeing more books with colors and graphics like this one! Reading books needs not be only black and white, and this feels like the next generation of books.
