A Victorian School Textbook on French History?

First, this is a very old book. According the the Wikipedia article on the author, Gustave Masson, it was published in 1888. Masson was of mixed Anglo-French heritage, and spent most of his working life in England, where he was one of the masters at Harrow.

The book is broken into a multitude of short, punchy sections that do not delve very deeply into their subjects, but do give a quick overview of the political and literary events of the period covered. I suspect (with no proof) that Masson wrote the book as a syllabus for a course on French history for the senior boys at Harrow.

About the Author
Katheryn Maddox Haddad grew up in Michigan and now lives in Arizona where there is no snow. She lives with her palm trees, cacti, music, and a computer with most of the letters worn off. She has made numerous genealogy trips around the US over a period of twenty years, and has traced her family back to England in the 1500s. She has a bachelor’s degree in English literature, history, political science and Bible from Harding University, and a Master’s Degree in management and human relations from Abilene Christian University. She was a social worker in Illinois, Virginia, and North Carolina, and taught business writing and other business courses at Rochester College in Rochester, Michigan. She spends half her day researching and writing, and the other half teaching English over the internet worldwide using the Bible as text book.

Deanna Shrodes is the Women's Ministries Director for the Pen-Florida District of the Assemblies of God. She is an Assemblies of God minister and has served for 27 years in pastoral ministry. She is an in demand speaker in the United States and abroad, and an accomplished musician. Deanna is an award winning writer and contributing author of four highly acclaimed anthologies and sole author of the books, JUGGLE: Manage Your Time, Change Your Life and Worthy to Be Found, both published by Entourage Publishing. She has been featured in many publications worldwide, including The Huffington Post. Deanna and her husband Larry make their home in the Tampa Bay area and have three children.

A raw and real memoir of an adoptee's journey, beautifully written

Worthy to Be Found, by Deanna Doss Shrodes, is a beautifully written memoir of an engaging Pastor and adopted adult. She relates her path to learning about, searching for, and reuniting with her natural mother. Her writing style is insightful and engaging, delivered with a healthy sense of humor, even on such a personal and sometimes painful topic. Her writing style, her compassion, and her love for God give her the tools to tell her story in a way that is entertaining, thought provoking and educational.

In her memoir, Shrodes tells her story as a baby born to a single mother in 1966 and placed for adoption. Her journey to learning her identity and developing relationships with her natural family is fascinating, but this book is about more than Shrodes’ personal experience. She includes details of the history of adoption in the Baby Scoop Era. She also educates about the rights adoptees should have to access information about their original identity. She is clear about the cold, hard truths of the American adoption system, and she articulates the struggle, the joys and the pain of living adopted. She also gives readers a first hand look at what living a life without secrets looks like, including the personal cost of living a secret-free life.

Another aspect of Worthy to Be Found that I appreciate is that the author’s faith is a central piece of her story. Many times, because of the role the church played in adoption and secrecy, adoptees and birthparents felt betrayed by Christianity and have turned away from their faith. Shrodes makes a strong case for the role of faith and God in an adoptee’s journey.

A Christian Pastor shares her wisdom.

I was asked to review this book by the publisher and immediately found myself fully engaged by the quality of the writing and the complete honesty of the story. In Worthy To Be Found, Deanna Doss Shrodes shares a message of grace that is affordable to all women “touched by adoption” (and maybe men, too), no matter their religious devotion, and even if they profess non-belief entirely.
The memoir discloses the bare facts of her personal history as an adoptee relinquished toward the end the Baby Scoop Era. Shrodes reveals the full range of her emotional experience during the search and complicated reunion with her birth mother.
What is both significant and unique about this “Christian memoir” is Pastor Shrodes’ courageous confrontation of the ages old patriarchal Christian orthodoxy that affords only recriminations and punishment to the girl or woman who is pregnant and unwed. Shrodes’ interpretation of scripture tells us that mother and child should be helped as a unit, not separated from each other as a twisted reparation. She counsels that Christ’s redemption was meant even for such women and especially for their children. It’s a kinder, gentler, perhaps truer Christianity.

Pauline Denyer-Baker is a graduate of the Royal College of Art who has been painting portrait miniatures and teaching art for many years. Her works have been regularly exhibited in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. She is a member of Miniature Artists of America and the Royal Miniature Society in the UK.

A Little Gem of a Book

Pauline Denyer-Baker’s ‘Painting Miniatures’ takes the reader from first steps to an assured mastery of this difficult but rewarding art. The eleven chapters cover 1. the nature of miniatures, 2. their history, 3. materials and studio needs, 4. choice of subjects, use of the sketchpad and approaches of contemporary masters, 5. basic techniques and helpful exercises, 6. various ways of getting started, 7. mixing colours, 8. still life, 9. portraiture, 10. silhouettes, and 11. framing the work. There is a short bibliography and a list of artist materials suppliers.

The style is sensible, candid and engaging. The advice is admirably laid out, clear, and packed with first-hand, practical matters from someone who uses her own experience to help the beginner understand the artist’s life. Drawing skills have to be kept up. A sketch-pad is important: to plan and try out possibilities if time is not be wasted later. Even a studio or work-area is worth thinking about. Artists are creatures of feeling, but those feelings need to be given space and encouragement by sound working practices. Those practices naturally vary between artists, and a most useful feature of the book are the sections featuring the various approaches of other miniature painters.

The artwork, both the ‘how to’ illustrations and the many examples of finished work, are of excellent quality, well chosen and attractive. The editing could have been a little tighter in places, and the book should perhaps emphasize more that miniature painting requires considerable care and patience as mistakes are not always easily corrected. Overall, the design, typesetting and finish of this 8½ x 11 inch format book make it a worthy addition to the bookshelves of art-lovers who simply enjoy looking at miniatures, and want to deepen that appreciation by understanding how they are painted. Miniature painter of all levels will find the book offers considerably more: a detailed and thorough survey of the field. Warmly recommended.

Loads of information, the materials to use and how to use them. If you seriously wis to have a go at this very frustrating method of work give this book a go.

I don't identify with the “prepper” or “off the grid” movements but I do have an interest in homesteading and sustainability – which is why I decided to give this book a try after it appeared in my suggested titles.

It was a massive disappointment. There's nothing here that you haven't heard before. A basic canning recipe, how to make a solar lantern out of a pre-bought solar light (for real? what's the point?), an uninspired bread recipe...

All very tame and cutesy. There's nothing here to really challenge or enlighten. You can find the same information in any decent DIY resource.

About the Author
Carl Koch was the first director of the MA in Servant Leadership Program at Viterbo University and the program coordinator at the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Thirty-eight years of working in schools and sixteen years in the publishing business convinced him that the most effective leaders were servant leaders. His pilgrimage to Assisi convinced him that Francis of Assisi exemplified servant leadership for all of us no matter what our roles in life. Although he continues to conduct servant-leadership training for medical and educational institutions and facilitates retreats, Carl retired in 2011 after six years as Director of Ring Lake Ranch, an ecumenical retreat center in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. Carl has authored 36 books and many journal articles, most on topics of adult spiritual development, moral decision making, and writing. Among his books are: A Popular History of the Catholic Church (Saint Mary's Press), Journalkeeping: Exploring a Great Spiritual Practice (Sorin), Growing in Christian Morality (Saint Mary's Press), and John Baptist de La Salle: The Spirituality of Christian Education (Paulist Classics). He holds master degrees in religious education, spirituality, and English and a doctorate in English from the University of Michigan. Carl and his wife, Joyce, live in Minocqua, WI and enjoy cooking, singing, kayaking, playing with their two dogs, and walking.

It has helped me to be a better servant leader

This book reminded me of the management classes I took years ago. The book has many helpful insights on how to lead, putting a Christian slant to them. It has helped me to be a better servant leader, giving examples, and making you examine your choices on how to bring out the best in your employees. I would recommend it to be required reading for supervisors & managers.

Walking like Francis

Many books have been written on servant leadership describing and interpreting the characteristics set forth by Robert Greenleaf. These books have helped many organizations develop practices that change cultures, improve productivity and enhance one’s own contribution to community. Carl Koch expands the understanding of servant leadership by weaving in the stories, values and practices of Francis of Assisi. Of course, Francis was simply living the gospel life as taught by Jesus. Koch enriches the experience of becoming servant through practical applications and most importantly calling one to deeper reflection and integration of these values into one’s being. I am amazed and delighted over the offering of fundamental servant leadership values, stories that touch my heart, and real ways I can move more closely to walking as Francis in this my very different life.
