Worthy to be Found is an engaging memoir that sheds light on the complexities and challenges of reuniting with birth parents. I am not adopted so cannot relate to the adoptive experience. However, Deanna gives me a vivid and believable description of an adoptee's struggles and fears as she grows into adulthood. With raw honesty, she pulls me into her story to see the wide range of post-adoption issues many adoptees encounter. This story will appeal to adoptees and non-adoptees alike.

About the Author
Deanna Shrodes is the Women's Ministries Director for the Pen-Florida District of the Assemblies of God. She is an Assemblies of God minister and has served for 27 years in pastoral ministry. She is an in demand speaker in the United States and abroad, and an accomplished musician. Deanna is an award winning writer and contributing author of four highly acclaimed anthologies and sole author of the books, JUGGLE: Manage Your Time, Change Your Life and Worthy to Be Found, both published by Entourage Publishing. She has been featured in many publications worldwide, including The Huffington Post. Deanna and her husband Larry make their home in the Tampa Bay area and have three children.

A raw and real memoir of an adoptee's journey, beautifully written

Worthy to Be Found, by Deanna Doss Shrodes, is a beautifully written memoir of an engaging Pastor and adopted adult. She relates her path to learning about, searching for, and reuniting with her natural mother. Her writing style is insightful and engaging, delivered with a healthy sense of humor, even on such a personal and sometimes painful topic. Her writing style, her compassion, and her love for God give her the tools to tell her story in a way that is entertaining, thought provoking and educational.
In her memoir, Shrodes tells her story as a baby born to a single mother in 1966 and placed for adoption. Her journey to learning her identity and developing relationships with her natural family is fascinating, but this book is about more than Shrodes’ personal experience. She includes details of the history of adoption in the Baby Scoop Era. She also educates about the rights adoptees should have to access information about their original identity. She is clear about the cold, hard truths of the American adoption system, and she articulates the struggle, the joys and the pain of living adopted. She also gives readers a first hand look at what living a life without secrets looks like, including the personal cost of living a secret-free life.
Another aspect of Worthy to Be Found that I appreciate is that the author’s faith is a central piece of her story. Many times, because of the role the church played in adoption and secrecy, adoptees and birthparents felt betrayed by Christianity and have turned away from their faith. Shrodes makes a strong case for the role of faith and God in an adoptee’s journey.
I first “met” Deanna Shrodes through her blog, Adoptee Restoration. She states that the comments she received by readers of her popular blog led her to put her story in memoir form. It has been a joy to read her experiences in book form. I highly recommend this memoir for birthparents, adoptees, adoptive parents and adoptive professionals.

A Christian Pastor shares her wisdom.

I was asked to review this book by the publisher and immediately found myself fully engaged by the quality of the writing and the complete honesty of the story. In Worthy To Be Found, Deanna Doss Shrodes shares a message of grace that is affordable to all women “touched by adoption” (and maybe men, too), no matter their religious devotion, and even if they profess non-belief entirely.
The memoir discloses the bare facts of her personal history as an adoptee relinquished toward the end the Baby Scoop Era. Shrodes reveals the full range of her emotional experience during the search and complicated reunion with her birth mother.
What is both significant and unique about this “Christian memoir” is Pastor Shrodes’ courageous confrontation of the ages old patriarchal Christian orthodoxy that affords only recriminations and punishment to the girl or woman who is pregnant and unwed. Shrodes’ interpretation of scripture tells us that mother and child should be helped as a unit, not separated from each other as a twisted reparation. She counsels that Christ’s redemption was meant even for such women and especially for their children. It’s a kinder, gentler, perhaps truer Christianity.
