Dr. Rob Pochek is the Senior Pastor at Raleigh Road Baptist Church in Wilson, NC. He has been married to Susy for 25 years and has two (mostly grown) children. Dr. Pochek received his M.Div. and Ph.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He has been in local church ministry for over 20 years and has served churches in Missouri, Illinois, and North Carolina. He also planted a church in Southern Illinois. This wide range of experience has helped him become sensitive to the wide range of issues facing churches and church leaders in the 21st Century. You can find his ruminations on such issues at robpochek.blogspot.com. In his spare time, you will likely find him riding his motorcycle, hunting whatever happens to be in season, or playing a round of golf.

A New Paradigm

In the book "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth", Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart state that "[t]he concern of the scholar is primarily with what the text meant; the concern of the layperson is usually with what it means. The believing scholar insists that we must have both." In this work, Dr. Pochek is a believing scholar. Using both grammatical-historical hermeneutics and logic, he blows a gaping hole through the traditional discovery of spiritual gift(s) - Christians sitting at a table answering hundreds of sanctified behavioral questions. But not only does he turn convention on its head, he actually offers practical solutions for both laity and leadership, and in the process, implicitly marginalizes the worst side effect of the conventional approach to spiritual gifts - church members callously passing on areas of need within the church because it's "not their gift".

This book is a biblical and practical approach to helping Christians discover their spiritual gifts. An approach centered around discipleship in the context of the local church. Seems so obvious, but rarely covered so well. As one who has been frustrated and underwhelmed by spiritual gift "inventories", The Unleashed Church was a satisfying and welcome find.

It's widely accepted that we live in the "Information Age," and that reality has had significant effect on the western church. The collection, collation, and dissemination of data helps drive the world around us, and that is certainly true for the life of the church today. Some years ago, well-meaning servants of the church developed what have come to be known as "spiritual gift inventories" These tools for the church were intended to help direct Christ-followers into ministry areas best suited for them based upon, you guessed it, the collection, collation, and dissemination of data. While these inventories have certainly been useful to many, Dr. Rob Pocheck, in "The Unleashed Church," rightly calls his audience to re-consider the near universal use of spiritual gift inventories, in favor of a less technical, but, perhaps, more biblically faithful pattern for identifying, and employing spiritual gifts. I found Dr. Pocheck's questions insightful, his alternative pattern hopeful, and his writing accessible to all. Throughout the New Testament, the church, and its members are compared to an organic human body. The organic nature of gift discovery that Dr. Pocheck offers here will "S.U.RV.E" the church well!

As a college student, I experienced many of the issues described in this book. From dealing with entering the professional world, to anxiety and learning how to use the mind to its fullest potential. The chapters offer information on so many different areas that were very relevant for me and I found myself benefitting a great deal from the advice given here. While I did buy this book for my niece, I am very sorry that similar one was not available for me when I needed it. It is encouraging, easy to read and accessible at any point in time and place in this technology era. Moving from studying to doing is not an easy transition at any age - and this book focuses on helping young people to manage that transition easier. It is really practical and contains a lot of valuable tips and tricks.

Cheryl R Cain’s “Redemption on Red River” transports readers down the Mississippi River from Ohio, where Anna Collins has just graduated from college and up the Red River to Fort Towson in Indian Territory in 1838, via Steamboat Jewel Belle.
Rocked by action, adventure and romance from the thunderstorm that almost swamps the Jewel Belle and the boiler explosion that does sink sister ship Heroine, readers will want to hang on and follow Anna to her teaching post after she is dumped by fiancé Martin Garvin just before their wedding – then fired from her teaching position by his father. Only Anna’s strong Christian faith that God removed Martin and her prestigious teaching position because He has a better plan for her life keeps Anna emotionally and physically afloat through the dangers and hardships she faces.
Anna finds out what God’s purpose is when she arrives at the fort after nearly nine weeks of water travel and a new heartbreak. Danger has not abandoned her, as evidenced by the strip of flesh with hair on it left outside her window, and a physical attack. But God has not abandoned her either. God not only comes to Anna’s rescue – He provides the perfect remedy for a broken heart.

A Voyage Into The Past

I very much enjoyed Redemption on Red River by Cheryl R Cain, published by Rose and Crown Books. This novel is the debut novel by Ms Cain.
In 1837 Anna Collins has her life planned. She is getting married, has her dream job as a teacher, in fact the perfect life for a young lady living a comfortable life. But things don’t go Anna’s way, she is jilted by her fiancé and her dreams of being a teacher lie in tatters.
Anna grabs the chance of a teaching post in the wild frontier lands and begins a journey that will test her to her limits. It seems that everything conspires against her. The long river journey, making and losing friends, being attacked by a drunken soldier and watching the dreadful sinking of a river boat. She finds love again only to be left alone again. Determined to be independent Anna realises she doesn’t need a man to make her life whole.
Once settled in her teaching job she thinks life will settle down. She is terrified by strange happenings and meets her attacker again. Her life turns full circle when she finds Martin, her fiancé, in the hospital. She finds that she has changed, is strong and knows she will never go back. But will Anna find someone who loves her for who she is? No spoilers here, you will have to read the novel.
When I started reading Redemption on Red River I wasn’t sure if I liked Anna, I wanted to shout at her that she was better than Martin. But she surprised me and I was taken on a journey with her and was proud of the way she fought and survived everything thrown at her. Cheryl R Cain’s writing is accomplished and the historical research really brings this novel to life. An excellent debut novel.

Wonderful collection of vignettes from the messy middle of life. Margie invites us into her life with an honesty that's almost shocking, and then makes us laugh out loud, because we see ourselves clearly and realize it's ok since our Heavenly Father can actually work with this. She's funny, but she pokes us right where we need to be poked to think more deeply about the true meaning life even when it looks like a pile of laundry.

Thus it came to pass that the returned exiles were the more easily reduced to inactivity by the difficulties which speedily came upon them in their attempts at the renovation of their old home. Mainly through the hostility of the Samaritans on their offer of cooperation being repulsed, but perhaps in some degree owing to the absence of royal favor on the part of Cyrus's two successors, Cambyses and the Pseudo-Smerdis, the work of restoration was for more than nine years (529-520 BC) in abeyance. In the year 520 BC, however, two years after the accession of Darius, the heartening which their prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, sought to give them, and the efforts of Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel, evoked renewed energy. Darius's approval was obtained, and four years later the Temple was dedicated to the service of God."

Stilted Language, Difficult to Follow Information

Informative but very difficult to read. The information was somewhat helpful, however, the writing was stilted and difficult to follow. I plowed through the book and was able to gleen a small bit of background history about the Maccabees but I would not do it again. I'm sure there are better written books available that provide a history of the time.

This Is Not an Introductory Book on Judaism

Obviously, my aim in reading this book did not fit the style of this volume. I wanted to learn about Jewish religion and history and this book seemed to assume the reader knew lots about both and seemed to summarize a few hundred years of history.

It made this book difficult to understand; if there had been a few maps to help a newbie along, I think I could have absorbed more. However, the story was told in a vacuum; I needed some history behind the history told in this book.

Because my low understanding was probably my own fault, I gave the book a 3 star rating.

A worthwhile purchase!

This is a great book for anyone looking for a biblical perspective on intimacy, and has questions about the different aspects of marital intimacy. While this book is more marketed towards women, I love reading this with my husband, and I think it helps a lot with tackling any tough situations as they arise in your sex life. I would recommend for any married couple. :)

Devotions that change your viewpoint to God's

I really like how J.Parker intertwined God's word with simple steps to change and a prayer. She pinpoints some of the most important and sometimes difficult areas and thoughts we deal with in marriage and gives God's perspective. I am reading each devotion daily for one week and going on to the next one on Sunday morning. That way I can really soak up the messages.

About the Author

Anna Franklin is a third degree witch and high priestess of the Hearth of Arianrhod who has been a practicing Pagan for more than forty years. She is the author of twenty-eight books and the creator of the Sacred Circle Tarot, Fairy Ring Oracle, and the Pagan Ways Tarot (Schiffer, 2015). Her books have been translated into nine languages. Anna has contributed hundreds of articles to Pagan magazines and has appeared on radio and TV. Paul Mason is an English Pagan artist, photographer, and illustrator best known for his stunning photomontage images and book jacket designs.  He has worked previously with Franklin as illustrator of "The Sacred Circle Tarot" and co-author of Lammas.  Mason lives in the English Midlands.

A walk into the pagan tradition

The Sacred Circle Tarot, created by Anna Franklin and illustrated by Paul Mason, is a captivating Pagan/Celtic themed tarot completely illustrated with computer modified imagery from photography and painting. It uses the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) Tarot framework, but replaces the Major Arcana and Court Cards imagery, and simplifies the Pips with semi illustrated scenery. The end result is a beautiful tarot deck that seems uniquely designed for Pagan/Celtic tradition.

These Tarot cards are large (5.5" by 3.75") compared to standard decks from Lo Scarabeo or US Games. These are bordered black, labeled at the top and bottom. The imagery of each card is placed within an illustrated frame, modified to reflect each Major Arcana or emphasize the representative element of each suit in the Minor Arcana. The back of the cards shows a shield crossed by two swords at the center of a gray stone background. As such these cards are not reversible.

The Major Arcana are labeled at the top, and numbered at the bottom. Most of the standard labels from the RWS Tarot have been changed and their order has been changed slightly.

As mentioned before, these cards are illustrated using photography and painting modified and merged via software. I believe that the most representative card of this deck is the World Tree. The World Tree shows a huge tree, slitting the scenery between night and day, moon at left, sun at right.

All the Minor Arcana have a key word at the top. These also include the suit name as part of the label at the bottom. The suits are labeled Wands, Cups, Swords and Discs (instead of Pentacles). These represent the elements of fire, water, air and earth, and are themselves of the frame which encases the imagery.

The court cards show a human figure representing Page, Knight, Queen and King for their respective suits, while the pips are represented with a corresponding number of icons for their suit, integrated in a scenic background.

This is a fascinating tarot deck. Somehow, it successfully manages to incorporate modern techniques of illustration, and a semi illustrated set of numbered cards, which make this Pagan/Cetic Tarot a unique entry. I may not recommend this one for beginners, but it certainly deserves a second look for those interested on Pagan/Celtic tradition.

I do like the artwork

I do like the artwork. Easy to use but card stock is very thin. Would not be able to use these professionally due to poor card stock.
