Diana Ketterman grew up in an idyllic rural town, surrounded by family and playmates but isolated by her home life, which was shaped by profound illness and instability. Her mother struggled for years with undiagnosed mental illness, becoming increasingly erratic and hyper-religious as her untreated symptoms increased in severity. Diana's father struggled to cope with his wife's strange behavior--often resorting to violence--even as he succumbed to his own personality-altering brain tumor. Caught in the middle are three young children certain their life is not "normal" but unsure who to turn to for help in this maelstrom of violence and chaos and neglect, shamed into silence by a stigma they don't quite understand. Recounted with the touching guilelessness of a confused oldest child but tempered by the wisdom of a woman who has fought her way through a maze of jumbled emotions and abuse to emerge a successful, well-adjusted adult, this is one woman's amazing story of hope and suffering. About the Author
For nearly her entire childhood, Diana Ketterman grew up in a home with a mother who suffered from undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia. When Diana was 13 years old, her father was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor affecting his mental capacity. It took his life at the age of 40 when Diana was just 17 years old. Diana, the oldest of three children increasingly took on many adult responsibilities as her parent’s illnesses became predominant. Through resiliency, Diana overcame her early obstacles to build an impressive career, one that combines her interests in teaching and technology while allowing her to stay connected to her community. Diana has 23 years in the field of education, 5 years working for the federal government and a lifetime of experience in building resiliency in coping with mental illness. Diana holds a BS in Business Administration and Accounting and a MS in Computers in Education. Diana has earned many achievements in education including being named the SBEA Teacher of the Year. She was instrumental in working with state politicians, such as former Governor Mark Warner and educators to establish state standards for students to receive technical industry certifications. Diana has been a speaker on the local, state and national level, writing and advocating the implementation of business and technology curriculum. She served as the adviser for a division of Future Business Leaders of America. Under her leadership students placed in the top ten in the nation five years in a row and twice took first. Diana has worked for the government in Innovations and Technology. She graduated from the first cohort of the Future FEMA Leaders, a prestigious program which allowed her to travel and learn about the interworking of the department while developing her professional network and was mentored by senior executive leadership. Diana is currently putting her years of technical and public-speaking experience to good use as she begins a media campaign in parallel with the publication of her book, which has included a presentation with CNN writer and senior producer Wayne Drash. Diana volunteers for her local United Way and has co-authored a regional United Way community mental health report.

A Child Of Royalty offers the reader true insight into the hardships an individual faces when dealing with a parent who has a mental illness. The author gives a firsthand account of her horrific childhood and the barriers she faced in getting her mother adequate support. Fortunately, the author turned her mess into a message of hope, redemption and determination to bring much needed awareness to the topic of mental illness. It's refreshing to read such an honest and heartfelt account of a parentified child and her resilience to be successful as an adult.

How Mental Health Can Evolve Despite Dysfunctional Family Roots

It's unusual to find a blend of autobiography and reflection on how mental health can evolve from dysfunctional roots, but A Child of Royalty is such a presentation and offers hope and inspiration in telling Diana Ketterman's story.
In the modern U.S., many believe we have social systems to address the special issues of dysfunctional families; but the reality is that many fall through the cracks, and A Child of Royalty testifies and documents one of these events. It covers the life of a woman whose mother suffered from undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia, whose father was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor that affected his mental capacities when she was 13, and of a family where 'head of household' became the author - at age 17.
You'd think social services would step in to help this family. You'd think a special cry for help from the oldest child would result in the embrace of a support system at the least and in viable foster homes at the worst. But none of this happened for Diana Ketterman, and A Child of Royalty is the story of what happens when calls for help fall on deaf ears.
How does one not only endure but excel from a childhood filled with fear, manipulation, control and uncertainty? If the results were a formula that worked for all, Ketterman would be rich. Here, it's enough that she survived to tell a story that will enrich (spiritually and psychologically) any who have suffered uncertain childhood years and struggles far beyond their abilities to cope.
Many memoirs chronicle difficult roots and adult challenges; but few document not only the consistent failure of social services, but how joy was uncovered and celebrated in the process of growth despite it all.

A real family

Having worked in the child welfare system, I always find it interesting to read stories of how young children manage tough times. The hopeful part comes when they manage to be resilient. The author's reflection about her involvement with social services is well done and a good representation for those who do not know how the "system" works - there are no easy answers.
