About the Author
Marc Hirsch was born in New York City in 1945. He attended Boston University School of medicine, graduating in 1969. After 45 years as a doctor he retired from hospitalist practice in 2011. He published his first book, The Case, in 2012 and will publish his second book, the sequel called Hard Case, in 2015. The Case has been edited and republished as a second edition.

Just okay ... but good for a first novel

This is Hirsch’s first book. It is a good book. I am glad that I read it and I enjoyed it. However, this book is probably not for everyone. Yet, that being said, one still has to pay the author his dues. He has written a fine book, and he really is a doctor by trade.
A wealthy doctor in 1950’s Stanford, New York is remodeling his home for his wife to the point of being wasteful, gaudy and extravagant. Moreover, he and his wife have a very strained relationship. They do not get along well at all. The doctor disgusts his wife in various ways, but I do not wish to place any spoilers in this review. The doctor partners with another younger doctor. They wish to merge their business with another highly successful doctor in town to have more control and direction of decisions made by the hospital and the medical board. They arrange a meeting at the doctors home that is being remodeled. One of the doctors needs to use the restroom and uses the extravagant master bathroom. When he flushes the toilet there is an explosion and this doctor is killed.
The contractor that received the bid is charged with the crime. He hooks up the final wiring of the toilet and the water heater when his electrician cannot make it to work. His ex-wife, knowing how honest the contractor is, contacts one of his oldest friends, a lawyer in New York City. He agrees to take the case. He initially travels up to Stanton, but takes his investigator, Alice White.
As I mentioned earlier, I do not wish to include any spoilers. However, this is where the action begins and the plot weaves in many directions. The reader has a pretty good idea who was really involved, but they have no idea why. And, twists and turns in the plot do not help the reader come to any conclusions too early. This is a good thing, of course
As I mentioned earlier, I am glad that I read the book. However, I do not know that I would really recommend it to anyone else to read. It was a bit too gumshoe, and Alice White definitely thought too much of herself. I also, tire of books where information flows to the good looking lady because of a few bats of the eye or a button or two undone at the breasts. Sometimes, men are just portrayed too simple. Two stars.

Doc Hirsch's debut murder mystery

On a June evening in 1955 two apparently unrelated incidents occur, one in the Bronx and one in Stanton, a small town two hours away in the Hudson River Valley. The first is a robbery attempt at a New York City garage called Ace Rentals, the other a mysterious death in the mansion of wealthy Dr. Edward Burger, whose medical practice is in Stanton. The link between these two events is lawyer-in-training Alice White; while returning her rented car she successfully foils a hold-up in progress, then travels upstate for her Manhattan law firm to investigate the supposedly accidental death of another doctor, only to reveal a power play of greed and marital discord that ultimately threatens her own life.
As the story begins, heroine Alice White is a loner, a 39 year old divorcee who lost her previous job when soldiers returning from WWII began looking for employment. Now she is enrolled in night classes at NYU Law School and works days at the firm to pay her way. In clipped, no frills language Hirsch describes her: "She had always intimidated men, and most women, too. She didn't mind. She liked keeping people at a distance. She burned her energy off running and going to fights at Madison Square Garden.... She would not trade her independence away for intimacy ever again." Alice is an engaging character, a modern woman intent on making her own way in a man's world.
During her investigation, Alice develops a love interest in Jim Peters, the contractor who built Dr. Burger's ostentatious new home. He is accused of a careless wiring mistake which causes a newly installed, imported Italian toilet to explode, killing popular Dr. Richard Thornton who was at the house for a meeting. Alice senses right away that Jim is most likely innocent, and townspeople confirm that he is indeed too skillful to have wired anything incorrectly. When she begins to interview everyone connected, Alice makes plenty of enemies, and is nearly killed twice before the truth comes out and the guilty are exposed.
Hirsch conveys time and place with carefully selected cultural and geographic details. His terse, cinematic style could transfer readily to a film script, and "The Case" builds to a suspenseful, dramatic conclusion with multiple surprises which would make an exciting movie.

I think it was a good start. I enjoyed the plot

As a first novel for this author, I think it was a good start. I enjoyed the plot, but the novel shows a lack of good editing. I hope that in the future Mr. Hirsch has better luck
