Deanna J. Smith lives in Vermont with her husband and three children. After a career as a professional musician, she became a stay-at-home mom. Inspired to write after receiving her daughter’s diagnosis of Down syndrome, Deanna is now the author of the popular blog Everything and Nothing from Essex – www.deannajsmith.com. Writing about life with three small children, mothering a child with a disability, running a household on little sleep, and her profound inability to keep track of all those tiny socks, her writing elevates the seemingly mundane to the beautiful.

funny, and also very shrewd

"I’ve been reading Deanna’s blog for years, ever since her oldest child was born with Downs’ Syndrome. I have found her writing to be witty, funny, and also very shrewd. So I read her new book with anticipation.
"Motherhood Unexpected" wrestles with understanding God, His sovereignty, His goodness, and our role in His good plan. Deanna writes honestly and winsomely, but she is not afraid to wrestle with hard issues. As I read her work, I was convicted as I saw the tangled nature of many of my own thoughts and reactions towards parenting, and yet I often found myself giggling at the painfully accurate descriptions of the characters. Her characters feel like someone you would actually meet, her dialog is witty and often fun, but she still manages to really wrestle with big issues. I’ve found myself thinking through her book often in the last few months since reading it.
I highly recommend "Motherhood Unexpected" and am grateful to Deanna for challenging my own heart on parenting, God’s goodness, and His sovereign plan."

Not a mom - Loved it! Worth reading more than once

Motherhood Unexpected is a really well crafted book that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I read this book at least three times and cried and laughed every time. I loved it and am not a mom! If you like books that are a combination of drama, humor, and topics all women can relate to - you will love this book.

Wonderous story of Love

This book will have you at the edge of your seat as it leads you through many different emotions. I read the book in one setting one minute laughing and the next crying as this gifted author draws the reader into the journey along side her. A must read for all who love the precious gift of a child. You will be blessed.
