A good primer

This was a good place to start for a novice like myself. At just over 100 pages I wasn't expecting an in depth explanation of everything needed so think the book pretty well delivered on my expectations. The one major thing I was not prepared for was the focus on Christianity. For the non religious like myself that was a bit irritating and I wish it had been clearer before I bought it. For the $3 I paid I can't complain much. Take what's useful to you and leave the rest. I would recommend the author hire a good editor in the future.

Just right!

As soon as I started this book, I couldn't put it down! It was full suspense, twists, and turns that I never expected right up until the end of it! The characters and details within this book made it so much more than other books I've read. It's nice to see that authors like T. J. Brearton haven't forgotten about making the reader feel as if they are actually in the book! I enjoyed it so much that I am already waiting for the sequel!

Hooked on Habit

There are a lot of twists and turns in this story and the suspense is pretty much non-stop. I really love this main character and the personal struggles he's going through because, honestly, I faced some of those struggles myself. He's a well drawn character who travels into some pretty dark territory. The story very much reminded me of Silence of the Lambs, one of my favorites.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little different as it was full of one person's thoughts on his way to solving this crime. Very interesting with lots of twists and danger. If you like police drama/mystery this book is for you. Final twist I never saw coming. I recommend this book.

Great introduction to DIY soapmaking

This book is a very solid introduction to making soap at home. Having said that, I believe that experienced soapmakers will pick up some useful tips as well- I showed this to my mother, who has been making soap since I can remember, and she learned a thing or two that she didn't know before.

The author repeatedly emphasizes the importance of safety. Since we are dealing with lye, this cannot be overstated. Of course, if you take the proper safety precautions, making soap is very safe. I like that the author really emphasizes just what those precautions are right from the start of the book.

The author covers everything necessary in detail, from what supplies you will need to the process of actually making the soap, and how intentional variations in this process can be used to make different types of soaps. The instructions on how to vary ingredients and/or heat to create new recipes was particularly interesting.

The science behind all of this was covered very well. I found it fascinating to learn about the different chemical reactions that occur in the process of making soap, and how intentionally varying the processes somewhat (IE using more or less heat) will alter the end result.

The book ends with several of the authors' favorite soap recipes, as well as specific instructions for each recipe. The emphasis is on making high quality soaps that are both healthy for you (no commercial/ questionably toxic ingredients), and good for the environment as well.

Highly recommended for those who want to learn how to make their own soaps- although I'm sure that even experienced soapmakers will pick up a few useful tips as well.

Good soap making book.

Great book. I've read several soap making books and in many ways this book contains a lot more educational information. I especially like that it addresses the issue of lye, which has always concerned me a bit. I learned a lot and am glad I purchased the book. Recommend.

Excellent DIY resource on making Organic soaps, complete with practical recipes and detailed instructions. In the first half books explains about the science behind the soap making and in the later part the author presents a collection of recipes. very helpful indeed.

Stephen M. Miller makes reading the bible funner.

I am new the whole bible scene, and for some reason his book at one of my local walgreens caught my eye, but I thought it was pricey so I did not purchase it right away. I waited a few weeks, and went back for it. It is very easy to follow, I like the pictures, and tips and hints type of research writing, that allows somebody new to the bible like me a guide with backup info for my questions.

In 1758, fifteen-year-old Mary Jemison and her family were captured near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by a Shawnee and French raiding party. Shortly thereafter, her family was killed; she was turned over to a Seneca family, adopted by them, and four years later taken to their western New York homeland--where, by choice, she spent the rest of her life as an Iroquois wife, mother, and landed proprietor.

Fantastic Indian Captivity Narrative

This book is an incredible account of the life and times of Mary Jemison, a white woman taken captive during the French and Indian War and adopted into the Seneca tribe of the Iroquois in western New York. This tale covers her more than 70 years living among them through many of the most vital years of the long history of the Iroquois Confederacy.
In November 1823, when she was in her 80s, Mary Jemison, at the urging of many of the friendly local inhabitants, gave her amazing life story to James Seaver to publish for posterity. Though his truthfulness in some details of that account has often been called into question, this book is one of the most important and complete of any of the Indian captivity narratives to come out of the period between the French and Indian War and the War of 1812, which most historians mark as the end of the period of influence of the Eastern Woodland tribes. This account gives unequalled insight into the Seneca Indians and their ways including religion, food, hunting, warfare, culture, etc.
Mary had many opportunities to leave the Indians and return to white civilization but chose not to do so and thus was witness to some of the most amazing events in the history of her adopted people. Her tale is important to not only historians and ethnologists, but to the general public itself as it is a truly amazing story of triumph and tragedy for a proud people struggling to survive in the face of overwhelming odds as a young United States continued to expand, forever extinguishing their way of life.

a native-american family. She married a Delaware (Lenape)
warrior, with whom she was very content and has many
children. This is a dramatic, true story, told in her own
words. She is in her 80's, and reminisces about her unusual
life.

Fascinating History

The narrative is fascinating reading, both in terms of the history revealed in the words of Mary Jemison and in terms of James Seaver who gives us his own version of her story. The effect is a layering of historical periods. With the help of the editing, you can peer through and see not only the period of Mary Jemison's captivity, but also the prejudices of the following time. An interesting example of the simultaneous respect and loathing with which the early settlers viewed the native inhabitants. I first read the narrative in high school, and would recommend it for young and old readers alike.

Easy to read and theologically deep.

Do you wonder how the Creator of the universe relates to his creation? Does God seems distant, aloof, and angry? If so, I challenge you to read this book! Get to know God as he has interacted with creation from the beginning. Perhaps you'll see yourself in the story?

Glenn Kreider convincingly demonstrates that condescension (or humility) is an attribute of God. He highlights story after story where God is near, in tune, and more gracious than we can conceive. From creation to re-creation (Genesis to Revelation) God humbles himself to meet the needs of his people. Kreider's insight will cause you to pause and reread familiar stories more carefully. You may even find yourself surprised at how God relates to people who constantly make a mess of things. Discussion questions at the back of the book will guide you (and preferably a group), in the process of application, as you reflect on the words of the author.

For those with biblical and theological training, do not mistake easy reading for shallow theology. Quite the contrary, readability of the book is deceptive. The work has a theological depth that is greatly needed.

I highly recommend this to all who wish to know God . . . really know God as he has revealed himself.

Highly recommended

As a pastor, I'm always on the prowl for resources that you can hand congregants and say: "Read this, and everything will make more sense." I can count on one hand the books I've read that make the cut, and this is one of them (and the only one in the genre of theology). While Kreider's book certainly achieves it's goal to make a biblical theological case for viewing condescension as a divine attribute, it accomplishes so much more. Allow me to note three additional benefits. 1) It offers a nuanced metanarrative that makes sense of the canonical narrative in a way my 8-year-old can grasp. 2) It covers orthodoxy. This is the kind of book you can hand someone and feel confident that after finishing it the reader will grasp the biblical narrative, the trajectory of revelation, and the basics of Christian doctrine. 3) It breeds hope, and that's something I, and many around me, are short on these days.

Buy this book. Digest it. Let it draw you to the God who lovingly condescends in such an unimaginable and seemingly impossible way that it's just downright awe-inspiring, faith-building, hope-restoring, and love-motivating.

A Lesson in Humility

In Scripture we are told that we love because He first loved us. We would not know Him well unless He revealed Himself to us. Probably the person who came the closest without special revelation was Aristotle, and who among us possesses his intellect, his reasoning capability, and the time he had to come to his conclusions, and even then he had a lot of errors in his thinking. Kreider's book is about how God has revealed Himself to us and in fact how that revelation is actually a condescension on the part of God. God comes in ways that we would not expect a great and powerful king to come.

Basically, you get a walk through the Bible and you get to see how God interacts with His people, which is just fine, and many parts along the way you would not likely have noticed on your own. For instance, consider that the first person God is said to appear to in the Bible is in fact Hagar, who is the slave woman of Abraham. In fact, God had made no promise concerning a child of Hagar and the fact that Hagar got pregnant by Abraham was a way of showing Abraham was trying to take control of the promise of God on His own, and while God owed Hagar nothing, He in fact made a promise to her concerning her offspring and provided for her.

The book goes on through the Biblical story and of course comes to the ultimate form of condescension. In this case, it was that Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, in being God by nature, chose to take on the nature of humanity. Other deities could have made appearances as humans in other forms, but the Son of God entered into the full of it even being born in a shameful position, living a shameful life, and dying a shameful death.

Which brings me to what I would say is my only major criticism of the work. I would have liked to have seen more about honor and shame in the Bible as this makes the idea of God's interactions with us even greater. The Son of God who is worthy of all honor chose to start at the place of lowest honor that He could. Not only that, He died a death that was utterly shameful and would have been met with mockery and derision. Still, this is what God did and that fact should bring us all pause.

The author's point then for us is that if our God regularly lowered Himself in order to serve us, ought we not do the same for one another? Indeed we should and one of the great problems of the church is we don't serve. I have told my own wife lately that if you want to see men who are often struggling the most with pride, look no further than the ministry, and I include myself in that number as well. Very few have a servant's heart any more. We have to constantly remember that we're here to serve a name and not to make one.

For many, this will be a good reminder on the story of the Bible. For more, hopefully it will be a resource to make you examine your own heart and see if you are living like Jesus.

This Book is a Testament to the Power of Faith, Prayer, and Belief

Part memoir, part health journal, I enjoyed Francine Craft’s inspirational book, Building Faith: A Journey from Death to Life. When the author was faced with a cancer diagnosis, she dug deep into the spirit to fight this deadly disease. This book deals with the crucible of mortality, the abyss of depression, and the importance of faith during life's journey.

As she related her life story, the author indirectly showed what went into the making of an artist. Born of a young teen mom and a young father, and reared by her maternal grandparents in the early years, Francine went on to become a successful writer of numerous romantic suspense titles. However, inside, something was missing. That something was faith. Because of her early sense of abandonment, for years Francine searched for the answer through therapy, through reading, through writing. Then, finally, through her renewed faith, she was able to rise above her circumstances and face her fears.

This is the inspirational book she had wanted to write for 20 years and was finally able to do so. “I write these books of the spirit to pass on the hope that God has given to me,” the author says. After she went through her battle against cancer and saw how prayer made her outcome successful, she wrote this book as a testimony to the power of faith. Using Biblical scriptures as epigrams, this book provides an uplifting experience.

This is a fast read, but one you will come back to and read over and over.

Great Inspirational Reading

I really have enjoyed reading Ms. Craft's new book "Building Faith: A Journey from Death to Life". It's a warm, helpful, and compassionate book to read. Since I am a faithful, active church member, we have had many discussions at bible study about various biblical topics, and reading this book had given me a great deal of insight to help further my religious discussions. I have read many books on religion, and I find this as engaging a book of faith, belief, and trust as any I have read. It is intensely moving for me. Thank you Ms. Craft for again taking your writing to the next level. Please don't stop!
