Black Dad-White Dad: The James Womack Story, by James Womack

If this book were about a football game, instead of an ordinary life well lived, we would read thirty chapters where your favorite team is two points behind in the fourth quarter with forty five seconds left on the play clock. James is the quarterback and executes a play that produces the winning score with honor and dignity every time. His life is a complex tapestry woven with threads of racism, poverty, alcoholism, bravery, illiteracy, tension, paternal rejection, sexual exploitation, patient endurance, domestic violence and a strong faith in God. The challenges he faces would have caused men of lesser faith to find solutions deeply rooted in violence, hate, alcohol and disregard for humanity and the sacredness of life. James has invited you into the thoughts, feelings, successes, and failures of his life in an intimate and honest presentation. You will be honored by his honesty, and humbled by his courage and determination. There are enough struggles in this personal history to deter the brave but not enough to stop the honored bravery of someone who knows God. “Black Dad-White Dad” choreographs the life of black kid growing up in Mississippi as he transitioned from sharecropper status to urban life, from illiteracy to education in the forties and fifties. James does what so many think we may want to do in our life. He not only asks the questions but searches for the answers. One might say he should be mad at the world, but he is not. He does not let his life experiences be an excuse or the answer but uses each challenge and blessing as a welcome mat to the next chapter of his life.

About the Author
James Womack, the first of two boys, was born on a Mississippi cotton plantation in 1940 to illiterate parents. His mother had a 3rd grade education but his father never saw the inside of a school building. He learned to read and write when he entered the Catholic school in the 8th grade. His father was an abusive alcoholic. God blessed James with a God fearing mother with a heart of gold. She believed and lived a life under the influence of the providence of a kind and loving God. The promises of God gave James the strength to be victorious over evil and hate. He has personified the faith and patience of Job in his lifetime. His mother's love and influence became a lifeline for James because his dad rejected him at birth based on pure unadulterated ignorance. This action caused James to become an over achiever because in his mind, he thought that if he could just be good enough at anything, it would make his dad love him. Despite many futile attempts at winning dad's love, James buried his 80-year-old dad when he was 37 without ever receiving a kind word, smile or hug. Despite his humble beginnings, James completed high school with honors and won three academic scholarships. Then he voluntary served in the United States Army for twenty-one years, which included a year in Vietnam, with honor. At age 48, while working a full time job with four children in school, James found the motivation and time to be a husband and father and return to the classroom on a part-time basis and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Butler University. He has given us a road map that demonstrates a proven method of turning scares and into stars.

Eye opening
By Lisa Schultheis
For a very long time, I couldn't read books on the Holocaust. I found them too painful. Then I read The Book Thief and it ignited a desire to read more about the tragedy. With each book I read, I discovered amazing people that could forgive even though they were severely mistreated. That is what James' book did for me. How can I complain about a small injustice when this man can survive being treated so horribly and carry an amazing positive attitude in his life? His forgiveness is hard to understand but what we should all strive for. Thank you James and Anna for opening my eyes to the tragedy of racism and a deeper view of the world of forgiveness.

A Humbling, Compelling, Inspiringly Patriotic Story of a Black Man Growing Up During the 1940s and !950s - A crucial time in U.S
By LAWonder10
I searched my shelves for a book I felt would even remotely fit int o a "Freedom" blog hop and decided this may "fit the bill". How little did I know how very appropriate it would be! This is not only the astounding story of a black man growing up during the Jim Crow period of unrest in Mississippi/Louisiana, but of a individual awakened to new truths and a strong appreciation for America and its Constitution. James Womack - born in 1940 - tells of his, spiritual & intellectual growth and of his humiliations, pain, and unlimited challenges.

As one who thought I understood the horrors of WWW11 & the Viet Nam war, I had a rude awakening to how very brutal the Viet Nam War was and how misled the World was by the media from America and abroad. I am aware of the way this Nation welcomed home the veterans who had fought with honorable intentions for others freedoms . However, I was not aware of the injustices that greeted them as they landed on America's shores. Many family members and friends served in those wars, some lost their lives, all were forever emotionally scarred for what they endured for others - FOR US!!

I heartily encourage all to read this humbling, inspiring story of this man's life growth and battles. I am certain all who read this will become a better person for doing so. What an incredible example of faith, forgiveness, perseverance, patriotism, lover of God and mankind he is.

If ever one deserves our support, he does.

There was a bit of repetition. The title is vague to me. Abetter title would be more fitting. However the book cover could not have been better. Also, be aware that although there is no profanity or sexual situations, some of the wording at times is very graphic.

In my review of this book, I offer a strong Four Stars rating.

*This was gifted to me by the author for an honest review, of which I have given.

Taking Life's Lemons and Turning Them Into Lemonade
By Christine
By reading Black Dad-White Dad, you will find that by staying in faith, you will have the strength to conquer any fears that come upon you. Mr. Womack grew up in an abusive environment, but because of the faith, courage and wisdom that was shared to him by his mother, he was able to overcome any barriers that came before him. All throughout his book, Mr. Womack quotes scripture from the Bible and attributes his ongoing success to his mother and the hands of God.
As a reader you will find that when one door closes there is always a door open to better opportunities as long as you stay in faith. Not only did Mr. Womack experience abuse while growing up, but also racism, poverty, alcoholism, risk taking, bravery, illiteracy, tension, paternal rejection, sexual exploitation, and patient endurance.
At the end of his book, Mr. Womack stated, "I have conquered all with the redeeming love of Jesus Christ. I am victorious."
No matter what Mr. Womack endured, he always turned his victim status into a triumphant victory with honor and dignity. His life story shows us the perfection of the art of taking life's lemons and turning them into lemonade.
