Enjoy the fantasy, and spark your imagination!

I didn't know at the outset, just how much I would love this book, but I found it to be deeply thought provoking and sweet. I read The Bog yesterday and today. I started it in the morning before I went to work, took it to work with me to read during break, read some more last night before bed, and finished it this morning. I can't get the words of the wolf out of my mind. The she-wolf asked just as many piercing questions of the man as she gave him answers to his clumsy, but well-meaning questions. After all, he's just a man, and he doesn't know the world the way that she does. Her questions were just as informative as her answers, as they drew the answers out of me, being drawn into the bog to be questioned, myself.

I look at my two dogs lying here by me, and I wonder if it's true, that they have a special place in God's heart, just as they do in mine. Why couldn't it be so? Scripture says that God's eye is on the sparrow, so if He cares for the lowliest of fowl, surely he gets pleasure from the loyalty and companionship of His higher-ranking and more intelligent creature, the dog!

I was struck by a part in the book where Susie reckoned that dogs are the angels of Heaven that roam the Earth, protecting and guiding their humans. Well, what if that hit the nail on the head? And what if these four-legged, wingless angels report back to God on our true character? I speak, of course, of the part that shows when we think no one is watching, when we're alone with an animal, and we're either truly loving, or truly lacking.

It may be just like that, too. Perhaps that's why the best people I know are dog lovers, and the ones I've disliked the most, just so happen to dislike dogs and other animals. Surrounded by dogs, we do tend to be more at peace and sense the presence of God, and perhaps, just perhaps, that's because dogs are sweet spirits sent by God. Dog is God spelled backward, it has been pointed out. It seems fitting.

When our dogs dream, and we see their paws are flying, and their tails and whiskers are twitching, it might be then when their spirits travel Heaven-ward. I'd like to think that. I'd also like to think that they are ushered into the presence of the King of Heaven, they tell Him all about us, and get their instructions for the next day. And maybe that's why dogs never seem to worry. They already know what's going to happen, and how the story unfolds. They know more than they can tell us, but it's not their job to tell us, because we have to learn it for ourselves.

The fantasy of The Bog took me through all of these thoughts, with all the accompanying wonderment, and the "what-ifs." If they could speak to us, what would they want us to know, and would we be worthy of the knowledge? Are we worthy of their loyalty, abilities, and special gifts?

You'll look at your dog in a new light

I was given "The Bog" for review. I love animals, especially dogs, so this book caught my attention with its little paw prints on the cover. From reading the back of the book I wasn't sure if this was a non-fiction or fiction story. The way the book is written, it reads like a non-fiction story about the human/dog relationship. After reading it I'm still wondering if this isn't a non-fiction book. Yes, the main character Bill ends up hearing the voice of a wolf named Napo but I've read crazier non-fiction. While the story touches on the relationship between humans and their dogs it also goes deeper, into their afterlives and the role God plays. Some of the ideas, especially those from Napo's perspective, will make readers wonder. I really liked that this book reflects my opinions on the subject of dogs' souls and where those souls go when they die. The subject is one I have very firm beliefs about and if the book had the opposite suggestion I know I wouldn't have liked it as much. The conclusion was touching and inspiring. I give "The Bog" 4/5 stars. The story is definitely original and just might have readers looking at their dogs in a new light.

Facinating tapestry of the spirtual essence and purpose of dogs

A must read for all thriller lovers, animal lovers, dreamers. This book is especially great for those of us who like to delve deep into the meaning and purpose of animals (especially dogs) on this earth. This goes beyond the imagination and makes one really wonder "Did this really happen?" In fact, I know the author personally and he is a good friend. I recognized some similarities of his life in the book and asked him last (yes, I've read the book twice) week did this happen to you John? He smiled coyly and grinned. Leaves me wondering and it will you too. It's a fast and easy read that takes you right into feeling the moist, dank greenery of the bog. You feel your hands run through the thick fur of the wolf cub and you want to pick the stray hairs from between your fingers. It's amazing. A great adventure into the world beyond and explains where dogs fit into great plan for mankind... Do dogs have souls? I never really thought about that before until reading "The Bog", now more than ever I can say emphatically -- YES!

About the Author
Ann Cleeves was working as a cook in the Bird Observatory on Fair Isle when she met her husband Tim, a visiting ornithologist. Soon after they married, Tim was appointed as warden of Hilbre, a tiny tidal island nature reserve in the Dee Estuary. She began writing her first series of crime novels here featuring the elderly naturalist, George Palmer-Jones. She went on to set up reading groups in prisons as part of the Inside Books project, became Cheltenham Literature Festival's first reader-in-residence and works as associate trainer with the reader development organization, Opening the Book. She is reader-in-residence for Harrogate Crime Writing Festival, and her reading passion is crime in translation. Ann has twice before been short listed for a CWA Dagger Award - once for her short story "The Plater," and again for the Dagger in the Library award. Her short film for Border TV, Catching Birds, won a Royal Television Society Award.

The very best of British mysteries!

I've read hundreds of both British mysteries and cosy murders, including ALL of Christie, Tey, Sayers, Doyle, Marsh, Rinehart, Rendell, etc. -- Ann Cleeves clearly deserves to be mentioned in association with, or even elevated above, that notable league of authors.

"A Bird in the Hand" is one of my very favorite cozy murders ever. It's the story of a young and aggressive birdwatcher whose corpse turns up in the marshes of a nearby wildlife reserve. The victim was only ever superficially tolerated by his associates and, as retired Home Office investigator George Palmer-Jones investigates the murder, suspects begin to emerge like blue-bottles from a garbage can.

The author weaves in plenty of juicy clues and superlative sub-plots. There's plenty to savour here, not the least of which include the great locations and the gratifying atmosphere.

Palmer-Jones is a "gentleman detective" who is also infinitely human when it comes to occasional mis-steps and, thus, the reader is empowered to see the case from his point of view. It's through shrewd persistence that Palmer-Jones ultimately prevails.

This one is in my top five of all mysteries and I cannot say enough good about it.

Anne Cleeves first mystery: A great start..

After reading Anne Cleeves Shetland quartet, I had to find her early books. It involved a search of the used book market. They are hard to find, but well worth the search. The well constucted, fast moving story involves british bird twichers and murder on the shore of east England. A book made for bird watchers and mystery novels.

A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH???

I'm a fairly new reader of Ann Cleeves books (all the Shetland series and one of the Vera Stanhope series), I thought I'd give her first book a try. A book about bird watching wouldn't ordinarily catch my attention and as one of the reviewers pointed out, it is a little plodding and certainly full of a lot of details. However, I consider none of that negative as it was her first book and many new writers feel the need to "explain" it all. I just went with it and read the whole book. It turned out far more interesting and intriguing than I first thought and you can see how Cleeves as evolved over the years. It has an interesting storyline and thankfully describes what "twitchers" do when out and about looking at birds. Felt the details were important as red herrings and get you to really think about who the story would play out. Once you hit your stride with this book, it's really a good read and I'm impressed by the talent that you see, even with this first book.

Stephanie Caffrey grew up in Wisconsin and has lived in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and London. A Raven Mcshane mystery not to be missed.
Raven is a dancer/stripper in a club named Cougars and is also a budding PI. One of her clients Ethan Longoria is a hot, young, former American Idol finalist, he managers to get himself arrested for the murder of Mickey Mayfield whom he threatened and disliked immensely as he was overlooked for an entertaining job that Mickey mayfield got.
Cody employs Raven to dig up some dirt on Mayfield, she goes on to find quite a lot including embezzlement and that Mayfield likes to have sex with underaged girls.
This book is well written and handles the subject well
There is a lot of twists and turns in this book and I found it very entertaining and look forward to more in this series.

Caffrey Out Strips The Rest

Raven McShane is my new hero. She's a stripper in Vegas. But she's not quite what Hollywood has depicted as a stripper. Raven is smart, insightful, and thinks outside the box. She knows dancing can't last forever and has found another job as a private investigator. Still an unconventional job, and one she's barely trained for, but she learns from most everyone she meets in the business, and that takes someone with smarts. The ending took me by surprise, which was great. I read a lot and for author Caffrey to come up with such a twist caused me to go straight to Amazon to see what else she has for me.

Viva Las Vegas!

Raven returns, and she is BAD A$$! I am loving this series! This is the second book in the Raven McShane series, and it's even better than the first. The first book is a great introduction to the characters, and this one further develops them. I love Raven. She is very strong and independent and funny to boot.

This book has great characters, but the mystery plot is well thought out and sucks you in. I really enjoy this series. I find myself anxiously awaiting the next book. Caffrey definitely delivers. i highly recommend this book...as well as the first one. You won't be disappointed!

Bet you can't work this one out...

With more twists and turns than snakes on a Waltzer, this is the compelling and equally well-crafted follow up to Jackson's astonishing debut `Pariah'. Once again featuring Detective Callum Doyle what starts out with a seemingly unprovoked attack on a mousy bookshop employee escalates into a great serial killer thriller. As the killer's murder rate escalates with varying methods of despatching his hapless victims, what appears to be a fairly random series of murders escalates into the very real threat of a serial killer stalking the streets of New York with a very specific reason for choosing the victims he does, leaving Doyle mystified by the link that he alone is sure exists and finding himself with his own personal hot-line to said killer. Punctuated by moments of great wry humour mostly at the expense of the cast of clowns that seem to be the stable of Doyle's fellow police officers, Jackson once again balances the tautness of the central investigation with a good dose of New York mordant wit. There is an absolutely terrific reveal at the end which caught me off-guard priding myself as I do as one of those annoying readers that guess the ending and just the right injection of pace that you as the reader (like `Pariah') are striving as much as Doyle to get to the bottom of this rooting-tooting mystery and seeking to unravel the clues in parallel with him. Along with a neatly conjoining plot woven around the aftermath of 9/11 and a mother's search for her daughter, this is certainly a more than entertaining crime thriller that wrong foots you at every turn. My only point of dissent would be the seemingly harmonious atmosphere of Doyle's home-life but maybe that's just because I personally prefer my detectives to be a little more personally tortured to add another facet to their character but this is a minor quibble and should not detract from the overall satisfaction gained by Jackson's excellent plotting and well-drawn cast of characters. Can't wait for the next one...

Fast paced and gripping.

What I love about the Callum Doyle series is that all the books can easily be read as stand alone's. I should know as I have read them all out of sequence by starting with Cry Baby which is the fourth in the series to reading the first, third and then this one. So as you can see, totally out of sequence, which really isn't like me at all but luckily it didn't matter that they weren't read in order and all have been worthy of five stars as have loved them all.

The Helper is quite different to the others in the series. This is due to the killer dropping hints to Cal in order to give him a chance to try and stop the murders before they happen. This not only infuriates Cal but the reader also. You need to be psychic at times I think to work the hints out and understandably Cal is beating himself up when he doesn't manage to stop them in time.

It felt very much like a cat and mouse game where the killer has the upper hand and is more powerful whilst Cal is the mouse who just seems to be running back and forth with no idea of what is going on but knowing he has to put a stop to it. It is a very fast paced read and very much a race against time to try and stop even more innocent people being killed.
I loved Gonzo's character in the book. He is a bit of a techno geek who fancies himself as a bit of a detective and gets under Cal's feet whilst trying to help him solve the murders. It is obvious that Cal finds Gonzo annoying but he can't help admiring his determination and I think he has a bit of a soft spot for him.

The Helper is yet another griping ride in the series that will have you holding on tight. With shocks and twists a plenty it left me feeling breathless by the end. Loved it!

It is a story of resistance to tyranny and the cost of freedom, and the story of a child who survives the massacre and the search for her mother who might have survived the butchery of Ravensbruck. Robert Scott served briefly in the Canadian Army and worked later for major industry as publications manager. He earned graduate degrees in English and History and held the position of Professor of Rhetoric and Technical Communication for twenty-five years. He held teaching positions in Canada, the Czech Republic and Singapore. He and his wife, Vicki, live in Sechelt, British Columbia.

A Thought Provoking Book

Author, Robert C. Scott has done exhaustive research in writing this work of fiction that is based on historical fact, surrounding the events that take place in the village of Lidice and the massacre of its people during World War II.
Young Jane, marches bravely into the unknown, with the supportive help of her adopted parents, Freelaff and Helga, ultimately uncovering the identity of a woman from a long ago photograph - who could almost be her twin sister. Amidst the rich detail and history in this book is a relatable slice of life involving these core characters.
The scenes of the violence at Lidice were disturbing but not overly graphic and detailed. The impact was nonetheless powerful, as I knew these events were true. This is a reminder to us all of what the human spirit is capable of enduring and even surviving to experience another day.
'Orphan of Infamy' is not a light read, and you will be reluctant to put it down once you've started reading it. I give this thought provoking book a 5-star rating.
