In the 18th century most people still lived in the countryside and made their living farming. Few, however, would have owned their properties but instead did seasonal work in return for a meagre pay and a roof over their heads. Their wives usually worked as Farm Servants in and around the farmhouse so the landlords got two workers for the price of one, or more as the children were put to work as well. By the mid-19th century and the mechanisation that the industrial revolution brought to Britain, many people had moved to towns and made their living from mining or manufacturing industries. Belief in witchcraft and faeries was commonplace and people who were believed to have ‘the gift’ – the ability to see into the future – were feared and ostracised. The first chapter of Faeries, Farms and Folk details events that took place in Dumfries in the south-west of Scotland in 1659, when the social disease of witch hunting was at its peak. The names of the accused are the real names of the people involved. Witchcraft was part of the belief system at the time, and devils, good and bad faeries, and other supernatural beings were very real to everyone. I have taken actual events and weaved my family members into the action. While actual people, places and events have been used, this book is essentially a work of fiction. Faeries, Farms and Folk completes the trilogy of the McMurdo family, yet chronologically it is the first book. Ours, Yours and Mines (1860-1913) and Far Across The Sea (1913-2012) have given readers a look into the lives of the people of Scotland at those times, told through real people and events. This book will take readers even further back in time, into the seemingly ordinary lives of the people in the 1600s and 1700s. Their living standards were basic. Most were born, lived and died in the same area. They lived in a time of political unrest and religious fervour, fuelled by the belief of many that witches, ghosts and goblins played a part in their fortunes or misfortunes. It is a fascinating period in history, and one which should be visited from time to time, to remind us of the freedoms we enjoy today.

Carmel McMurdo Audsley is an Australian Journalist, Editor and Author who lives in Brisbane with her husband Iain. They both had Scottish fathers, share a mutual love of Scotland and have walked in the footsteps of their ancestors in the country that they love to visit. As a Newspaper Journalist and Magazine Editor, Carmel has written, and had published, thousands of news stories and feature articles and has now turned her research and writing skills to digging up the past and breathing life into the characters she finds. Her first historical fiction novel, 'Ours, Yours and Mines', about the mining families of Ayrshire Scotland, was published in 2012 and captured the hearts of readers as the story unfolded about the harsh living conditions in the mid-1800s and the sad loss of life. 'Far Across The Sea' continued the story with a young man from Scotland travelling to the sunny shores of Australia. Carmel’s third book, 'Faeries, Farms and Folk', details the lives of farming folk in the south-west of Scotland who were uprooted from their ancestral homes at the time of the industrial revolution. The books are all based on Carmel’s family history. She now devotes all her writing and editing time to producing Scots News Magazine for ex-pat Scots in Australia, and researching and writing historical fiction.

He who controls the past, controls the future." 1984 George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is a fictional account of the manipulation of the historical record for nationalist aims and manipulation of power. In the book, the creation of a "national story" by way of management of the historical record is at the heart of the debate about history as propaganda. To some degree, all nations are active in the promotion of such "state stories," with ethnicity, nationalism, gender, power, heroic figures, class considerations and important national events and trends all clashing and competing within the narrative. Such cleaver manipulation is almost impossible to identify if you have been indoctrinated into these ‘lies’ as you have no benchmark to judge them against. However, within those manipulations there will be facts that just ‘don’t make sense’! I have highlighted some of these facts in this book to illustrate that some of our history is only ‘nonsense’, which could be due to ‘sleight of hand’ or simple due to the ‘simplistic linear way ‘we view history itself. Homo sapiens are the only creatures capable of abstract thought and a ‘perception’ of time, creating a manipulation of thought concerning the past, the future and the present. An inquiry into the nature of history is based (in part) on a working understanding of time as a human experience. Therefore, history (as understood by Western thought) tends to follow an assumption of this linear progression: "this happened, and consequently, that happened; and so that happened because this happened first." This is also known as the ‘cause and effect’ philosophy. Yet most ancient cultures held a mythical conception of history and time that was NOT linear. They believed that history was cyclical with alternating Dark and Golden Ages. Plato called this the Great Year, and other Greeks called it an aeon or eon. Examples are the ancient doctrine of eternal return, which existed in Ancient Egypt, the Indian religions, or the Greek Pythagoreans' and the Stoics' conceptions. In ‘The Works and Days’, Hesiod described the five ages of Man: the Gold Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, the Heroic Age, and the Iron Age, each with their ebbs and flows of progression. Other scholars suggest there were just four ages, corresponding to the four metals, and the Heroic age was a description of the Bronze Age. The clearest illustration of this ‘ebb and flow’ of historical invention can be seen with the Roman Villa. The use of a ‘hypoacoustic'’ created a house that had ‘under floor’ heating, which is much more efficient than fires or radiators - yet if this house was found without reference archaeologists using ‘linear’ logic would conclude that it must have been built in the 21st century as all previous houses lacked the superior design. So if our linear history is fundamentally flawed, where are these problems and are there a more rational explanation for them? Here are my top thirteen!

Sabrina is a charmer!

Sabrina knows how to write: this story of a 20 year old cat and her adventures traveling throughout the US with her human mom, cat granddaughter, and cat best friend is enchanting. Not everything that happens to Sabrina is fun or amusing - a horrific story of pet thieves taking her daughter to her probable death in a testing lab makes this not for younger readers. But as a love story between an exceptionally intelligent cat and her devoted human mom, it's a story worth reading more than once.

Linda Pearson's writing began when she was asked to serve as stateside correspondent for a mission team serving in Honduras. She wrote daily updates and emailed them to intercessors. Like the first Sydney Brennan story, you feel like you are inside her mind hearing her thoughts, but also you are seeing her observations of her surroundings that entertain your visual mind as well. The story moves along and has enough twists, that I did not figure out the conclusion. I enjoyed the ride to get there.

A great book for mystery lovers

Sydney has been asked by her ex boyfriend to do a background check on his aunt's fiancé. This leads to an interesting investigation and an ending that surprised me since (not bragging) I usually have the killer figured out long before I get to the end of the book. I was also surprised by the lack of editorial mistakes that can be not only distracting but leave you wondering how they could have been missed.
