Jay did an absolutely wonderful job with this book! Many smiles while reading it and a few tears too, but most were happy tears because they were memory tears. Having just recently experienced the loss of our dog I did not think that I could read this but it helped me accept the facts and also has enabled me to open my heart to allow a new dog to share our home. If you or someone you know has ever had to deal with the loss of their furry family member this book will make the situation much easier to deal with.

Well I bought it. Haven't started it yet. Know it will be an emotional journey that I need to go thru but though mine was a cat am sure the gist of it will make no difference. Am really hoping for healing. Been 8 months. Knowing it's time and it being time are two different things.

The Bieler family's vast collection of wartime letters and photographs tell intimate, firsthand stories of five young brothers and their parents. In Onward, Dear Boys, Philippe Bieler skilfully weaves together his own voice with those of his grandparents, his father, and his uncles into a story of war, immigration, and family life. Settling in the province of Quebec, then divided into French-speaking Catholics and English-speaking Anglicans, was a struggle for these devout, francophone Calvinists, but with the unexpected declaration of war in 1914 came an even greater challenge. In 1915 three of the five Bieler boys volunteered with the Princess Patricia Regiment, and in 1916 the fourth son followed. The eldest, Jean, became an assistant to Colonel Birkett, commander of the McGill-financed Canadian Hospital in Boulogne, and the second-eldest, Etienne, was promoted to lieutenant of an artillery brigade. The other two were privates who fought in battles including Sanctuary Wood, the Somme, Vimy, and Passchendaele, and in 1917, the fourth son, Philippe, died at the front. Upon their return to civilian life, the surviving brothers became leaders in government, science, and the arts : the eldest as Deputy Finance Director of the League of Nations, the second as a colleague of Sir Ernest Rutherford in the research of the atom, and the third as President of the Federation of Canadian Artists. The youngest, Jacques, who was too young to go to war, was an instigator of the CCF party, a precursor to the NDP. Enlivened by a wealth of family archival material, Onward, Dear Boys is a poignant story of the experiences of war and its impact on a family of new Canadians during the first decades of the twentieth century.

"Onward Dear Boys" is a book of many dimensions. At core, it is the narrative of four brothers who fought in the trenches of World War I. Their observations and declarations, conveyed in letters written to their parents, reveal the challenges each one found in the principal fronts of the conflict. The book, too, describes a Calvinist family as it moved from Europe to the Catholic setting in the Province of Quebec. Most of all, it is a picture at close range of a tightly knit family at the beginning of the last century. The book is a valuable piece for both history and sociology.

I enjoyed the book very much

While ODB is a fascinating and unusual perspective of the little documented Canadian participation in WW1, at it's core it's a warm story about a tight-knit family and their devotion to each other, their new country and their faith. The sense of duty they had is such a contrast to today's society. I enjoyed the book very much.

This book is a war diary written by four brothers serving on the front lines in WW1, in the form of the letters they wrote to their parents. They fought in most of the famous battles: Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, Ypres, Sanctuary Wood, The Somme, among others. So the book is an eye witness dispatch from the muck, and terror and camaraderie and boredom of men serving in the trenches.

The brothers looked out for each other, when maneuvers threw them together. But the front was vast, and only three came back. It was three weeks before the middle brother could get to the field hospital where the youngest died, to find out what had happened in his final days. It is a poignant story--these boys in their late teens growing up with death all around. It is also an historical document, a definitive collection of first person accounts from the WW1 Canadian Expeditionary Forces.

This book is gritty and real. You can almost see the trench mud spattered on the transcribed letters. I highly recommend it.

A must have practice book, great for testing, with answers

Loved this book. This is the second year I am purchasing NY Test prep common core practice books,, this is by far the one that I really expected the answer keys to be. The only book I found so far to have really point key explanations on how the written answers should be (or guided). Absolutely glad with this purchase.
Also, the tests are pretty short and easy to do for a kid - One story with 10-15 questions, I guess depending on kid around 20-30 min per test / time occupancy, exactly what I was looking for! Will definitely get next year.

An absorbing biography

The collaboration of biographer Karen Holliday Tanner and western history expert John D. Tanner, Jr. (Professor of History, Palomar College, San Marcos, California), Last Of The Old-Time Outlaws: The George West Musgrave Story is the informed and informative account of the notorious bandit, robber, and killer of the American Southwest, George West Musgrave (1877-1947), who was a charter member of the High Five/Black Jack gang, which in turn was responsible for Arizona's first bank hold-up as well as many other robberies. Only the ravages of failing health brought an end to Musgrave's crimes. Last Of The Old-Time Outlaws is enthusiastically recommended as being an absorbing biography of one of a rare oxymoron -- a successful career criminal.

A Classic Tale Of Old Texas

I learned quite a bit about my own family by reading this book. My great-grandfather Jonas Quimby Musgrave was George West Musgrave's uncle. The uncanny resemblance both in personality and facial features to current members of my family is remarkable. More importantly to the general reader however, this is a book that will really give you insight into the life of a real Texas Badman at the turn-of-the-century. The book was extremely well-written both scholarly and entertaining in the annecdotes presented revealing of the time and the chief character.

What is also reviewing in this book is a relationships among the various citizens and desperados in the brush country of South Texas. There you'll find Musgrave's hanging around with Pancho Villa and other Mexican pistoleros., in the international brotherhood of gunfighters and shootists. The folks back then didn't pay much attention the borders. It is a true glimpse of the past were men's allegiances were to their family and their friends not to nations. The only thing that kept George West Musgrave from being one of the most legendary bandits of the old West was the fact he never got caught and died with his boots on. If you want an example of a real Texan, not the kind that emigrate from New England and think a "Bowl of Red" is Manhattan clam chowder, this is a book for you.

George Musgrave's how to "win" friends and influence people

Karen and John Tanner's book on one of the last of the Old West outlaws provides us with a window to look into the past through the lens of a man who broke the law so many times that people would not even notice. Born in South Texas in the area south of San Antonio, George West Musgrave quickly entered a life of lawlessness which was marked with various exploits such as robbing of the first bank in then-Arizona Territory, a massive heist of a train near Grants, New Mexico and numerous cattle rustler endeavors across the Southwest. With the closing of the Frontier, Musgrave took his show far south of the border to the developing nation of Paraguay where he continued his lawless exploits in the Gran Chaco. In both the north and the south, Musgrave used a combination of persuasion, intimidation and friendliness to maintain control over the people he met; his gift for public relations served him well. Despite these "gifts," he was unable to provide a stable family life for his wife, being divorced by her and marrying a Paraguayan native who bore him several children before they had a falling out. His life of crime continued unabated until heart disease took his life in 1947 at age 70.

The book was an enjoyable read and tells us much about the time of the closing of the Old West. Railroads, the expansion of settlement in the Southwest and better police work spelled the end for the old outlaws and Musgrave saw the handwriting on the wall. The book has 259 pages of text with copious end notes, bibliography and an index. A good book for historians of the Old West and Latin America as well; four stars.

Susan M. Shaw is director of the School of Language, Culture, & Society and professor of Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University. A native of Georgia, she received a PhD from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is the author of God Speaks to Us, Too: Southern Baptist Women on Church, Home, and Society and Storytelling in Religious Education and co-author of Girls Rock! Fifty Years of Women Making Music and Women’s Voices, Feminist Visions: Classic and Contemporary Readings. She is an ordained Baptist minister and a member of a United Church of Christ congregation.

Now I never have been able to use home made soap on myself, because it always caused terrible reactions with my skin. After reading this book I learn some tips for homemade soap and moved on to the process of doing it myself! Luckily and thankfully I now have an amazing bar of soap thati can use on myself with no reaction!

A well-organized book.

This is probably the best book about soap making I have read so far. The information is arranged in a sensible fashion and has much more to say about just about everything than most of the other books I have read so far. The soap recipes that are included are even arranged in order from simplest to most complex.

Excellent book - very thorough

I recently read a study on how antibacterial hand soaps can cause real damage to your skin (and might explain why I suffer from very dry hands). So I've been looking to take the natural approach, hence why this book caught my eye. I think this book is very well written and thoroughly explains the process of soap making. I welcome the specific recipes for dry and sensitive skin too! Would recommend!
