About the Author
Barb Asselin is a college professor and best-selling author who has published books in many different genres including education, cooking, crafts, law, real estate, internet marketing, entrepreneurship, baby sign language, fitness, office administration, children’s fiction and children’s non-fiction. Barb loves crafts and can often be found with her two daughters in her “craft room” finding a new project to either start or complete. She has been crocheting since her Nanny Short taught her how to chain while she was in grade school. Since she began teaching in 2004, Barb has taught in six different programs within the School of Business and has created numerous online courses for Algonquin College including the Virtual Assistant program. She loves to teach through her courses, books, and textbooks, and strives to make a connection with each student and reader. Barb lives in Canada with her husband, Mike, and two adorable daughters, Casey and Jamie. They enjoy music, skiing, golfing, running, and mixed martial arts.

Easy to follow instructions, lots of fun!

As a busy mom of 2 small children (2 and 4-year old), I am always looking for some simple craft activities to do together.

We really had great fun with this book preparing some of the decoration for the advent.
The kids loved the penguin and the santas!

The instructions are very clear and illustrated with step-by-step pictures, which is super useful for the origami crafts.

"Too often, the works of fiction depicting Black Greek sororities and fraternities are those of pledging and hazing. But there are so many untold stories of inspiration, sisterhood and even struggle within these groups that helped shaped the black community," says author Kimberly Noelle who took that concept and wrote the new fiction novel, There Was a Spirit. "This story does more than scratch the surface. It digs into the history of our people and deeper experiences within Black Greek organizations," Kimberly said of her inspiration to write this novel.

"There Was a Spirit is my first offering in a series to the sorority/fraternity community. The first book follows a year in the life of sorority member Najwa Jackson in 1973. The subsequent books in the series will chronicle the life and times of this same woman and her rise or fall in Omega Pi Alpha Sorority (fictitious sorority)." While Kimberly is familiar with the experiences of Black Greek life through her own affiliation, she says that this book is not about any particular organization but experiences that are universal within the entire Greek community. "Black Greek organizations have made a significant impact in the fight for equality within the African American community. Members of these groups contribute a life long amount of work to the community and the goals of their organizations. They also have a wealth of untold and fascinating stories of inspiration, sisterhood, brotherhood and even internal struggles that have strengthened their bond."

About the Author
There Was a Spirit is Kimberly Noelle’s first fictional novel. Kimberly received her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Columbia College in Chicago and a Master of Science Degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. In her spare time, she enjoys writing music, traveling, reading, collecting historical memorabilia and volunteering in the community. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and resides in the Chicago area. Currently, Kimberly is working on the continuing story of Najwa Jackson and the women of Omega Pi Alpha.

The Reality of Sisterhood

THERE WAS A SPIRIT is a poignant portrayal of college life during the early 1970's. It focuses on the unique experiences of African-Americans attending a primarily white university during a period of political and racial upheaval. The story begins in the early part of the century when racial dynamics were even more intense and even life threatening. Readers are introduced to Sadie Mae, one of the founding members of Omega Pi Alpha Sorority. Her story is an attention grabber, and it immediately draws you into the book. However, to discover Sadie's full story, readers must first move ahead several decades and meet Najwa Jackson, the main character.

Najwa Jackson is attending Casperton University, and is a proud member of Omega Pi Alpha Sorority. She has big plans for her senior year of college, particularly as it relates to the sorority because she has been elected chapter president. While on the surface she seems to have everything together, she deals with insecurity, loneliness and uncertainty about her future. As the story progresses, we meet her friends, family and associates, get a taste of Black Greek life, and a glimpse of political issues such as abortion and racism. Najwa's penchant for history her desire to learn more about Sadie's life and role as co-founder of the sorority, result in the discovery of a much more complete view of Sadie's life. What she unearths rocks the university to its very core.

Kimberly Noelle has ambitiously taken a coming of age story and integrated past and present events while addressing relevant social and cultural issues. Because there were so many layers to the story, there were times when I found myself wondering how it would all fit together. The author immediately piqued my interest in Sadie's story, but then shifts and focuses on Najwa. Sadie's story was sparsely dispersed throughout the book and while it was eventually resolved, I found myself getting frustrated. In addition, there were times when I felt the scenes depicting college and sorority life were tedious, at times adding length, but not much else. However, I am glad I stuck with the book because, in the end, the story was heartfelt and satisfying. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Could Have Been Better

There Was A Spirit By Kimberly Noelle 349pp (2004)

There Was A Spirit is set in 1973 and tells the story of Najwa Jackson, a

college senior at the fictional Casperton University located in Casperton,

Ill.

I like historical fiction and was interested in reading about college life

in 1973. Except for a few references to Angela Davis, Patti Hearst and

turntables the book really did not deal with what was going on in 1973 and

instead focused on Najwa's trials and tribulations as the leader of her

sorority. Her problems leading the sorority to me were not reflective of

the time period and the book could have easily been set in the 80's or

90's.

The book discussed the community service of the sorority, but overall, had

the effect of playing into the negative stereotypes about Greek life

instead of debunking the stereotypes. The only time the sisterhood became

the least bit concerned about what was happening on campus was when a plan

they hatched up negatively raised their profile on campus and they engaged

in damage control by speaking out about injustices at the school.

There was a touching story about the founder of the sorority but I did not

think it was successfully woven into the plot. The sacrifices of the

founder only served to make the activities of the sorority seem even more

trivial.

The book did a good job capturing Najwa's uncertainty about her future and

about role as a leader on campus. To that end it may be enjoyed more by

high school or college students. However, the author did not do enough with

the story line to make a non-Greek adult like me care about Najwa or her

sorority.

Paw Prints Student Workbook - recommended by an Occupational Therapist / Parent

I / Occupational Therapist and parent love the Paw Print Student Workbook and so do my students! Everything is clearly presented and easy to use - you can have the student form the letters in the workbook - the instructions are easy to follow for both the educator / parent and student. It's also a lot of fun because each letter is formed with an animal - such as the A is formed in an Alligators mouth! And working with the Paw Prints Educator's Guide there are even Animal Fun Facts! I recommend using Paw Prints for children to learn forming letters.

Great Handwriting Tool for my Son

This is a great workbook! I love how easy and fun it has been for my son to learn writing. He has done great using this book! Numbers were a challenge until he started using this workbook and now he can do both letters and numbers. It has really helped him excel in school!

This is a primer; a supplement to a Taxco library

The authors wrote this before the move to collect became as advanced as at present. There photos are b & w and they are plentiful for this reprint - i have not seen the original; and the text is short and to the point about a few artists. The preamble about Mexican silver antedating the Taxco movment is enlightening and very nicely done. Once can never have enough photos to have an appreciation and this little book adds to one's library of Taller and Taxco and is most welcome even if not a giant or in color.

A good intro or addition to any library on Mexican silver

Though this book is slightly dated and lacks the lavish illustrations of some newer coffee-table treatises, it provides a good, basic overview of Taxco silverwork and traditional Mexican jewelry. (It is interesting to note that these authors are often quoted and cited in the newer works.) The book was written in the early '60's, just at the apogee of Taxco's productivity.
As a youngster, I spent many hours in Taxco, particularly in the talleres (workshops) of Hector Aguilar (Taller Borda) and the Castillo family, and have always been attracted to the diverse traditions of Mexican silver jewelry- from Michoacan, Oaxaca and elsewhere, including Taxco, which was extremely important in the renaissance of contemporary Mexican silver jewelry. The era of large talleres is largely over, with a very few still in existence. Much jewelry in Taxco today is made in tiny home workshops on contract, resulting in a decline of design and variety, not to mention the average workmanship.
This book is an excellent introduction, readable and intelligently written and illustrated, if limited in its scope and size due to the lack of supporting audience when it was written. I highly recommend it to those with an interest in Mexican jewelry and its traditions...

Disappointing

I've been an Preston/Child fan for many years, ever since I picked a copy of "The Relic" up off my mom's coffee table and started thumbing through it.

Since that time, the books have gotten better and better, and I was both thrilled and saddened when the series seemingly came to a resounding and satisfying ending in "The Book of the Dead".

Imagine my joy when I came across "The Wheel of Darkness" while on vacation. I can't say it's a terrible book, it's not. It's just not as good as any of it's predecessors.

The plot feels rushed with minimal setup and little follow-through, and while there is a suspension of disbelief required in any work of fiction (especially fiction dealing with themes of the occult)"Wheel" asks too much of the reader.

While the majority of the Pendergast series deals with events and murders that seem supernatural but are ultimately revealed to be merely bizarre, "Wheel" asks us to believe in malevolent "thought forms" that can physically manifest and go out to do evil deeds. Scrolls that imbue those
who view them with inhuman abilities and avarice that drives them mad.

The story suffers from an anemic cast of characters, I miss police detective D'Agosta and many of the others I've come to know. Constance has always been, in my opinion, a relatively weak character, the authors don't seem to know what to do with her. Pendergast and Constance as a duo are less interesting than Pendergast by himself.

In the final analysis "Wheel" seems like weak tea, watered down and lacking the qualities that made previous books a bracing, refreshing read.

Smoke on the Water

For pure escapist adventure fiction with serial cliffhangers, and enough science and history to add, if not feasibility, at least a touch of credibility, it doesn't get much better than Preston and Childs. And for a unique and engaging protagonist, it doesn't get much better than Aloysius Pendergast, the eclectic and urbane the FBI special agent who seems to do just about everything except work on cases for the FBI.

Notwithstanding, I found this talented duo a bit off their game in "The Wheel of Darkness", a mildly interesting but less inspiring mystery than some of the Preston/Child classics like "Relic" or "Cabinet of Curiosities". To retrieve the mysterious "Agozyen", an ancient Eastern version of Pandora's box, the globetrotting Pendergast treks from a remote Tibetan monastery to a trip across the ocean on the Britannia, a mammoth-sized luxury ocean liner on her maiden trans-Atlantic voyage. Tagging along while helping to drag "Darkness" to a substandard effort is Constance Greene, who adds little to the story besides a dose of tedium and a bridge to the sequel. As the Holmes/Watson team of Pendergast/Greene sleuth this titanic love boat in search of their prey, they quickly find themselves facing down a serial killer and a ship's officer bent of revenge and self-destruction.

"The Wheel of Darkness" had its share of suspense, and enough intelligence to keep the pages turning. But the pace was uneven, and while the "Agozyen" and the consequences it wrought was a fresh idea, the incarnation of the Agozyen's demon was bizarre to the point of nearly being funny. Further bogging down the story was a slight overdose of eastern asceticism vs. western decadence, and the authors' standard rap against anything corporate. But I quibble. All in all, while not the best of the series, this is a fast and mostly enjoyable read, and more than adequate way to pass a lazy few evenings or a long plane ride.

Short and Unremarkable

I've been eagerly awaiting the latest Preston/Child novel, but once again I was disappointed. Pendergast was at his best in "Cabinet of Curiosities" (perhaps my favorite Preston/Child book), but my interest in him has declined with each additional book.

This story breaks from past Preston/Child tales in that there is no gruesome and puzzling murder in the opening scene. Instead, Pendergast and his ward Constance travel to a Tibetan monestary for some meditation and study. The pacing is rather slow and I had to force myself to continue reading, which is unusual for a Preston/Child story. A mysterious artifact was recently stolen from the monestary, which provides a bit of intrigue and a mission for Pendergast.

But then the chase leads to an ocean liner at which point the story felt like an episode of "Murder She Wrote" and I couldn't help but picture Angela Lansbury as Pendergast. Pendergast breaks a card counting scheme in the casino, but not much else of interest occurs until the end of the book. The ship gets hijacked in order to ram it into some rocks and then I felt like I was reading the script to "Speed 2", which was a horrible movie not to be emulated in any fashion.

The monster was only briefly introduced and was not scary and created little tension or suspense. Constance was mostly a vehicle for Pendergast to explain his theories. She is very shallow and uninteresting now that we know her origin. Unfortunately, the authors are developing her to be Pendergast's crime solving assistant. I'm sorry, but I don't want another Batman and Robin. I wish Preston/Child would drop Pendergast and Constance, but the end of this book indicates they will be back.

Finally, the book seems short. There is a bit of description of the monestary, but most of the story takes place on the ship. The description of the ship and its workings was pretty thin-I learned more on my recent Disney cruise. Despite my disappointment, the book is still better than most of its ilk. I just think the authors can do better.

Worth it!

I didn't know it, but I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time. "Less Than a Widow" made history real for me. For the first time in a long time a Bible story caused me to truly cry, laugh, and sit on the edge of my seat as I turned page after page devouring this intriguing story. There is nothing contrived, preachy or whitewashed in the writing. Highly recommend.

The author breathed life into the characters in her book. She gave them a humanity that all of us could relate to. It is intriguing to read an adaptation of the biblical story of Ruth, but this is also a wonderfully researched and well-written historical novel that everyone should check out. I got hooked immediately, and now I'm finished and still thinking about it. It is one of those books that leaves an impression.
