If you like cats, you'll enjoy learning more about the feline mystique, the history of cats, the science behind some of their quirks and habits, and many statistics collected over the years. What were the most popular cat names during certain periods? How loud can a cat purr? When are a cat's whiskers formed? What plants are poisonous to cats? Who, in history, owned cats. Author Emma Boyes even tell you the names of some of these privileged cats. A great reference for cat writers and a super gift for the cat person.

lots of great information

This was a fun book with lots of interesting information. I couldn't go back and count if there really were 1106 different facts about cats as it would take too much time, but, in reading, I noticed a lot of repetitions of facts--just worded differently. So, I really don't think there were 1106 DIFFERENT facts, but it's still a great, fun book for a cat-lover.

Excellent guide to Tromp

I have been playing Tromp for the last 6 years and played over 100 games with 2100+ rating performance (better than my current rating of 1985). Peter Wells is still the bible for this (hope he would come up with a 2nd edition). Pallisar gave a very good guidance on this opening. The statistics part was very useful and I was suprised to see Tromp scored very well in many lines - I think it deserves more popularity, especially if you compare it to "mainlines". Another great feature of this book is - it contains many recent games with top GMs - I didn't know it is played so often at that level. Any annotated game at 2700+ level is an excellent source to understand the opening. Pallisar has covered all the mainlines with good notes on the sidelines as well. Overall, anyone interested in tromp - This is a MUST buy.

Great Book

Deciding to take up the trompowsky was probably the best descion I ever made. At one stroke, you cut your study time down by massive amounts, as you avoide the kings indian nimzo, benoni's and all the other theoretical mountains. I've had outstanding results with it and owe much of my improvement to chess in general to this opening. The tromp. is employed at the highest levels of chess today and more and more people are starting to see the excellent practical value of this wonderful opening. Im about 1800 USCF and I can tell you this is the most up to date guide available on the market. There is also plent of fresh original anaylsis with excellent notes and tips. Palliser has also been a long time devotee to this opening as well. Whether you play the tromp. or just want to stop treading the theoretical oceans and actually steer opponents into your territory then this book is a must buy.

Clear and comprehensive

This is a fine book; it serves as a good practical guide to playing the Closed Sicilian because Palliser pays enough attention to the each of the various possible move-orders and flexible responses, but it also contains a fair bit of general theems (such as the sacrifice on f5), not only through example games but also by textual explanation. A minor point of criticism would be that no theoretical verdict is given on the main lines, but that's slightly too much to ask from a 'Starting Out' book.

Great Purchase!

I purchased the e-book after watching Kimberly Hargraves minister on periscope she has a heart for God and a beautiful spirit. So i decided to purchase the ebook the price was great, and i was able to use my kindle app so I was off to a good start. From the moment I began to read the prayers there was a quickening of Gods word, that even though I was familiar with the scriptures new wisdom was revealed. I strongly encourage you read aloud these daily prayers that will bring change for the greater good of some of life's daily circumstances .

Bringing Changes to My Life

I haven't had this book that long, but I am able to finger through the pages and find a prayer for what I have in my heart to pray on. These anointed prayers carry scriptures from the Word of God, and I have faith that He is listening to every single one.

Solid Work that Advances the Conversation

Interest in the theological idea that we are united with Christ or participate in Christ has started to catch on in Protestant circles as of late. I don't know if this is rooted in a rediscovery of our Eastern Orthodox roots or if it is linked to a renewed interest in orthodox, relational, Trinitarian theology. Either way, we have had a fair amount of monographs come out on the topic of how exactly we live our lives in Christ and mature in Christ. More specifically, the topic of theosis or deification of the Christian is what this conversation centers around. How much of the divine nature do we actually partake in (2 Pet. 1:3-4) or possess?

Enter Reclaiming Participation: Christ as God's life for All by Cynthia Peters Anderson. Anderson argues that in order to have a firm, orthodox understanding of what it means to participate in Christ we actually need to look back to Cyril of Alexandria and the early church's thinking on our relationship to the divine. Only then can we fully appreciate and safely explore contemporary discussion on what it means to be in Christ.

After a chapter exploring what the early church and Cyril of Alexandria taught concerning theosis, Alexander brings Cyril into dialogue with Barth and Balthasar's more complex thinking on this topic. Using Cyril, the author critiques and helpfully advances the conversation. The solution forward is by looking back to our rich heritage.

The book is nuanced and complex (and heavily footnoted). It would be impossible in a review this length to cover every topic. However, I do want to briefly comment on the issue of sanctification and its relationship with participation in Christ. Alexander does a really great job of showing how our telos is to be like Christ but that has immediate ramifications for now.

Alexander argues that the Protestant argument for imputed righteousness and the Catholic argument for infused graced are not as diametrically opposed as many on both sides believe (Loc. 5358). She asks a series of telling questions like,

"Is it possible that on the basis of Christ's righteousness and saving activity on our behalf, we receive an infusion of grace that makes this action transformative in us as a result of the Holy Spirit's work within us? Can we not be at once accounted righteous as a result of Christ's alien righteousness, but also--as a pure gift of God relying solely on the power of the Holy Spirit=-be made righteous as we are infused by grace and transformed into the people god intends us to be as a result of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?" (Loc. 5358)

Alexander rightly points out that while the idea of bearing fruit in salvation can lead to the mindset of salvation by works, it does not necessitate it. I agree completely. Works play an important role in showing a declaration that has already taken place in Christ. I know of few Protestant churches that would not affirm that statement.

My largest issue with Alexander's book is that I wish she would have interacted more with the Bible. I recognize that this was largely a work of systematic theology and comparing the thinking of Cyril, Barth and Balthasar. Yet, by the end of the book I didn't really feel as if there were any definitive conclusions made. It wasn't a bad book but it left me with very little to cling to.

Due to the technical nature of this work, it would probably be best read by pastors, seminarians and scholars. It is worth reading and I do think it contributes to the discussion of theosis, especially as it relates to the thinking of Barth and Balthasar. I would recommend this work.

Build your foundation on Jesus

This is an excellent book for anyone looking for additional reading material to compliment their own Bible. "Foundations" is full of helpful citations that allow for a guided Biblical reading experience. The authors are authoritative without being overly academic and do a great job at being informative without being opinionated. My takeaway from the book is that Jesus needs to be at the very center of our lives if we are to be called followers of Jesus. In this way-- and only in this way, can we really do ourselves and those around us any service. Highly recommended!

As a side note, with the books added questions, notes and intentionally blank pages (for your thoughts/impressions) this book could really be a great Sunday school book.

About the Author
Peter Jones was educated at Cambridge University and taught Classics at Cambridge and at Newcastle University, before retiring in 1997. Informative and witty

A kind of Chomsky's "How The World Works" on ancient history of Greeks. Informative, funny. Can be read on the beach (in my case: in Malaga)
