Terrible.

This. book was written by a twelve year old with no idea what a run on sentence is, nor any clue about grammar. Numerous mistakes were not caught by the proof readers, if there were any such thing. Example: the officer's. Why the apostrophe? "Couldnt get passed them. Probably meant past. I could go on, but why bother. I would not recommend this book to anyone..

An Excellent Work of Scholarship

Throughout the collection of essays portrayed in The Enigmatic South, the outlooks from the contributors present a myriad of interesting topics. From politics to religion along with perspectives on education, the contributors of these essays show the major changes in the south before, during and after the American Civil War. While there have been many studies in the different parts of the effects of war in the south, these essays showcase something new in the world of Civil War academia. While many would consider these essays Lost Cause Historiography without even reading the work, they are not so. While most studies of the south tend to look at the effect of the war during Reconstruction, this collection shows every major aspect of the south throughout the entirety of Civil War studies.

The contributors to these essays are Christopher Childers who writes an essay about States Rights after the controversies and politics of Missouri’s Slavery. Sarah L. Hyde writes about the education developments of the Antebellum south in the Gulf states. Julia Huston Nguyen writes of religion and mainly Clergymen in Louisiana during secession. George C. Rable writes an essay on Clement L. Vallandingham. Paul F. Paskoff writes about the wealthy southerners who fought in the war in an intriguing title called “Rich Man’s War.” John M. Sacher writes of Jefferson Davis and the conscription of Confederates. Richard Follett writes about the career of Pierre Champomier. Samuel C. Hyde, Jr., the editor of the collection, writes about the Bowling Green Plantation and Wilkinson County. Eric H. Walther writes about William Lowndes Yancey and the way he wrote and obscured history. Lastly, Gaines M. Foster writes of William J. Cooper. As the editor, Samuel C. Hyde, Jr., is the Leon Ford Professor of History at Southeastern Louisiana University. He is also the author of several other Civil War works including Pistols and Politics: The Dilemma of Democracy in Louisiana’s Florida Parishes, 1810-1899.

As stated earlier, one of the nice things about this collection is the fact that there are three parts to the work: Antebellum, The Civil War, and Reconstruction. It was a breath of fresh air since most books on the Antebellum south tends to pay more attention to politics than to the other major points of society during that period. While reading Nguyen’s essay about religion and Clergymen during the secession crisis, showed that even though preachers used the pulpit to expose their own political beliefs, they were able to use the pulpit to enable the soldiers to think very much the same as them. One of the preachers in which she mentioned talks about the statement of defenders of their God and their way of life which used religion in order to aid the Confederate cause. Sarah Hyde’s essay on education was particularly interesting when talking about the different types of schooling. From private schools to home schools, they were all determined on the way in which society was placed; if homes were more spread out, than the education system would more likely be home schooled. Paskoff’s essay about the “Rich Man’s War” not only used modern research to prove his point, but used well labelled and easy to read tables to aid in his thesis. While I do not have the time to go over every essay in the collection, I should say that they are all excellent works on the analysis of the south from the Antebellum Period to the Reconstruction Period.

I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in the American Civil War and anyone interested in the evolution of Southern Culture throughout American History. The Enigmatic South is an excellent collection of essays which bring about new scholarship to the study of Southern Culture during the Antebellum period through the Reconstruction. What these contributors have brought about in this collection should aid future historians in the understanding of the south during the Civil War period. It is my hope that these essays will be used to further understanding the people of the south for years to come. I applaud all the contributors of this work and hope that we see more works by them in the coming future.

As the author of Tove Jansson's biography, Karjalainen has become an expert not only on Jansson's writing and art but also on her decades of personal correspondence and journals.

I highly recommend this book

I have been enthralled with the Moomins since I was a little girl. The woman behind their creation has now become illuminated and revealed to me in this splendid book! I have not yet finished it, but I am enjoying learning about her childhood, life as an artist and writer, and her successes and tragedies. I highly recommend this book, especially if you have a fondness for the Moomins. I am enjoying reading the book immensely - the writing, paintings, illustrations, and photographs are all wonderful!

About the Author
Mike Bogin lives in the Pacific NW with his wife of twenty-five years and has three grown children. Mike’s parents traveled extensively and worked abroad; their travels took him to sixty countries by the time he was ten. During his college years, Mike traveled more on his own, including time in Ireland at Trinity College, Dublin during his undergraduate studies. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with Honors and Distinction. After spending a year on an island in Greece working manual labor and writing his first novel, he went on to complete his graduate studies at the University of Cambridge in England at the Institute of Criminology within the Faculty of Law. Mike’s Master’s Thesis focus, Anti-Terrorism, would not turn into a major industry for years to come. Mike has been active in real estate for more than twenty years, buying and selling properties and doing creative renovations. He farms wheat and grows grapes, making several distinct red wines from the hobby vineyard on the farm. Mike has written three novels and a screen play.

Great thriller, very scary concept.

This is a well written and very provocative novel, the title captures it all too simply. As you read this book, you can't help think that the concept is not so farfetched. The class distinction issue in the political theater and Occupy Wall Street movements, combined with the news this week about the disgruntled Goldman Sachs employee and the US Army sniper gone off the deep end, make Bogin's story all too possible. Highly recommended!

A Delightful Surprise From A New Author

This was an unexpectedly fun read. I found myself cheering for the villain and enjoying Bogin's astute observations about society and the causes of our country's state of affairs. It would be difficult not to relate to the characters the author thoughtfully develops. Several times I found myself being emotionally affected by events in this book. I am impatient for the next book in the series.

My husband handed me this book and I thought it would be just another guy conspiracy-theory-revenge-fantasy thriller. It is not. Men and women with varied interests will appreciate this read. I was HOOKED one chapter in. I got really involved with and cared about the characters who are multi-dimensional and take different cultural points of view. The topic is timely and is not reduced to cliches. Rather, it is a well written and thoughtful exploration of wealth equality, stress and fatigue in the military, gun access, interpersonal relationships, political power and more. I read it in four days, finishing at 3:30 in the morning. I am recommending this book to all of my friends. It would make a great book club selection. I have to say that I love the totally un-PC title. The author did not pull his punch in naming this book. Good for him!

I have read all of Jeff's books, and "Moonshine & Murder" is my favorite. He knows how to write a story with rich characters, fascinating history, compelling storyline and tension on every page. I feel like I've known George and Ruth my whole life and I care about them. It's hard to put the book down. The ending is a nail-biter. A very enjoyable book! I can't wait to read his next one!

The Fair brought millions of visitors to St. Louis, leading the crafty Vaughn to surmise it would be the perfect place to hide out. Vaughn’s decision would put him squarely up against St. Louis Chief of Detectives William Desmond and his able group of detectives. The result would be the deadliest shootout in St. Louis Police history followed by one of the most brazen prison breaks in Missouri history. This book examines the parallel careers of the St. Louis Police Officers and criminals leading to a collision course in a rooming house on Pine Street. The leader and only survivor of the shootout would meet his own violent end a year later. Read this detailed true crime account with more thrills than anything imagined in fiction.

I was so happy when I found out that Carol Dean Jones had continued her story. I loved it as I had the other four or five that she had written. It is a wonderful read and I hope she will continue with it.

I had a feeling about who the culprit was and I was right! But that wasn't the main focus of the story to me, it was rebuilding family ties. I hope David can be healed in the next installment! And what about Martha and Tim? Hurry with the next book! Funny thing is while I'm reading these books I wish I could learn to quilt, but I never think of it between books.
