Jesus and his companions come to life within the rich context of turbulent 1st century Palestine. The political, socio-economic, and religious conditions of the Jewish people living under Roman rule provide moving and meaningful insight into Jesus, his life, and his teachings. His kingdom of love and service contrasts sharply with the kingdom of the Roman Empire ruled by Caesar through domination and cruelty. These kingdoms ultimately collide, but the apparent winner does not have the final word. Stories from the author’s life are intertwined as the combination proclaims a message transcending time and place about human struggle against oppression and a path to liberation. Touching, funny, suspenseful, and, at times, startlingly beautiful, Sight In The Sandstorm illustrates the power of an extravagantly loving God, a God on the loose in the whole world then and now.

About the Author
Ann J. Temkin is an ordained Protestant minister with a rich background and a complex spiritual journey. Daughter of a Jewish father born in Russia and an English mother brought up in the Methodist church, Ann was not raised in any religious tradition. Her childhood was profoundly marked by anti-Semitism she experienced personally and through the stories of adults around her. A powerful religious experience at age 19 resulted in her becoming a follower of Jesus, but one without a bridge to his Jewishness or her own. Ann earned an MA in Theology from Marquette University in 1968 and had a call to ministry at a time when women could not be ordained. She then earned a Masters in Social Work from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and served as a psychotherapist for over 30 years. In 1999 Ann was ordained to the ministry and served as pastor and director of counseling ministries in an interdenominational Christian church until 2010. Today she ministers through her organization 4Dimensions leading retreats, developing creative liturgies, providing spiritual direction, and teaching in churches and seminaries. She is also a member of the Adjunct Faculty of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. Her long spiritual journey has included the integration of portions of many traditions—not only those into which she was born, but eastern and Native American spiritualities as well. This led her to involvement with the civil rights and women’s movements, interfaith activities, and other social justice endeavors. Ann believes that God is always “more”—more than we can understand or imagine or experience. She seeks the divine everywhere—in nature, in people, in herself, in the sandstorms of life, and in the mysterious “cloud of unknowing.” She loves to hear people’s stories because God is always alive there; their hearts are cathedrals to her. Therefore she lives among the questions and the questioners, walks with the wounded and marginalized, and testifies to both the depth of the human struggle and the extravagant love of God, who will one day bring into being the “new heaven and new earth.” The past ten years of her life have included intense study of life in 1st century Palestine, the world of Jesus and the writers of the Gospels. This, along with Ann’s continual growth with herself, God, and the story of Jesus, birthed Sight in the Sandstorm. Reach Ann at www.anntemkin.com or ajtemkin@comcast.net.

Jesus brought to life
By Rev. Susan J. Hetrick
I recently finished reading Sight in the Sandstorm, by Ann J. Temkin, which is interestingly subtitled “Jesus in His World and Mine.” Part memoir, part re-imagination of the Gospels, this book surprised me in many ways.
I’m not one to read memoirs, normally. However, the fact that the author is the child of a Russian Jew and an English lapsed-Methodist, who met God in a Roman Catholic church and went on to become an ordained Protestant minister piqued my interest. And yes, Temkin’s story is very interesting; complete with anti-Semitic persecution, rebellion by living in an artist’s Paris loft, mystical encounters with God, and memories of an airplane hijacking. She makes connections between what happened to her, and a story from the Bible in most cases.
However, what makes this book so compelling is Temkin’s re-imagining of Jesus’ life. She uses rich, meticulous description and intimate detail; fleshing out Biblical conversations with asides and hidden questions and motives, and brings Jesus and His companions to vibrant life. For instance, in chapter 14, she tells a parable of a 5-year-old Jesus bringing his beloved lamb, Ahuvi, to the Jerusalem temple for Passover. When Jesus realizes that ‘sacrifice’ means that Ahuvi has to actually die and cannot come back home with him, his heartbroken sobs brought me to tears as well. Temkin’s gift for imaginative writing is even more evident in chapter 17, in the graphic and visceral description of Jesus’ treatment at the hands of the Roman soldiers. She connects Jesus’ thoughts and words to the future and a universe full of individual human beings (named, in some cases) abused, tortured and victimized by other human beings. It is powerful stuff, and it broke my heart.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the final chapter of the book felt awkward, with a forced and tenuous connection to the previous few chapters. I understand Tempkin’s intent to sum up and bring her story full-circle, but it felt contrived to me. Despite the awkward finale, Sight in the Sandstorm is well-worth the read.

The book is an easy read and yet provokes thoughts about God
By Susan in Tucker
Ann Temkin mixes fascinating stories from her life with imaginative retellings of gospel stories. The book is an easy read and yet provokes thoughts about God, social justice and compassion. Read it and agree with Temkin that "God is on the loose."

An amazing window into our souls
By ken hatcher
Engaging, thought provoking and provocative, Ann Temkin weaves stories and wise council sprinkled with appropriate humor. The contents of this book are gleaned from an amazing personal life combined with an "earthy" retelling of first century Judaism and the Passion of the Christ. I have never considered the world that Jesus lived in and his friends in the context of a people I could touch, smell, and even see. Ann Timken's knowledge of that time and place along with her imagination serves to bring the Gospel story alive in new and inintriguing ways. This read will invite readers to reconsider the Christ story and it's current influence in the midst of our lives today.
