Kuzmino Chronicles: Memoirs of Teenage Holocaust Survival, by Nathan Moskowitz

Leib and Gittel Moskowitz were both born and raised in Kuzmino, a small town in Transcarpathia, in what was then Czechoslovakia. As children they hardly knew each other. In May 1944 when they were both fifteen years old, they and their families were herded off to Auschwitz in cattle cars. From there, their paths temporarily diverged. Each was transported to a separate series of concentration and labor camps. Both miraculously survived their ordeals and after liberation spent many years waiting to come to the USA. Leib spent this time in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany while Gittel spent these same years in the United Kingdom. Their separate life trajectories re-converged when they both settled in New York where they became reacquainted, married and raised a family.
This book chronicles Leib’s and Gittel’s turbulent Holocaust saga in their own words. Historical documentation is juxtaposed alongside their memoirs, as well as corroboratory documents obtained from the International Tracing Services (ITS) collection held by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), Yad Vashem, and numerous other sources. Photographs are also included to further corroborate their very clear and precise recollections.
This book hopes to honor the many family members and countless of individual souls recollected by Leib and Gittel. Their memoirs not only testify to the ordeals suffered by these victims, but also shed light on the fate suffered by millions of martyred Jews, and of those fortunate enough to have survived.

By Mark Eden Horowitz
This is not just another book about the Holocaust. Here, the author, Nathan Moskowitz, puts to pen substantive interviews with his parents, Leib and Gittel Moskowitz, both survivors of Auschwitz and other concentration camps. Threaded throughout the extensive narratives is historical research, duly substantiated by historical sources. On top of this, he has gathered dozens of documents kept by the Nazis and other organizations and institutions, which record the comings and goings of parents. This factual chronicle also records the imprisonment, transfer, arrival and death book (Totenbuch) of Leib’s brother, Herman, who passed away in April, 1945 (one month shy of the end of the war in Europe) in the Mauthausen infirmary at the age of seventeen.
I was flabbergasted by the nearly total recall of his parents (apparently still alive in their mid-eighties). Their lucid descriptions of pre-WWII Czechoslovakia (lHungary) paint an idyllic and detailed picture what daily life was like, the decent housing, ample home-grown food (and how it was prepared), the animals, celebrating Jewish holidays, the schooling (in Leib’s case, also Cheder), and the stories of relatives – many of whom died during the Holocaust. And then their sudden departure from Kuzmino to near-death in Auschwitz.
I give Kuzmino Chronicles five “yellow” stars. It’s a must read, (I remain hopeful that that will include “deniers” -- It happened, and they were there!).

Kuzmino Chronicles will invade your soul.
By smalljay
Dr. Nathan Moskowitz obviously has fulfilled a task dear to his heart: to both record the memories of his parents and their unthinkable journey, and simultaneously provide documentation to support their testimony. Personal photographs provide a stirring enhancement.
This book is a contribution to history, biography, and – allow me to say it – drama.
There exist so many personal stories of the Holocaust; yet each of them is unique in their relative sameness--being abducted away from a cultivated life to endure a life of persecution and sub-human brutal, merciless, depraved savagery.
How sensitive and astute of Dr. Moskowitz to have transcribed his parents’ recollections in their own words, thus creating a vivid and absorbing account. One feels achingly present with them; monumentally grateful to have been spared such devastating experiences oneself; and profound relief knowing they survived, found each other, and were able to create together a new, substantive life in America.
It has not escaped this reader’s awareness that one of the substantive lives Leib and Gittel Moskowitz “created” was that of their son, Dr. Nathan Moskowitz, whose numerous accomplishments include not only his heartfelt zeal to document his parents’ experiences and their ultimate triumph over them, but also his fervor to create a significant existence for himself.
Just imagine young Leib and Gittel surviving horrors and near death, then going forward, establishing a good life again, and producing a fine son who validates the gift of that fresh life by growing into manhood as a gift to others.
Among many other proficiencies, Dr. Moskowitz is a neurosurgeon, a neuroscientist, the inventor of several medical devices, an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Medical School; the founder of Shoah Forensic Art Institute; and an oil painter whose work has been exhibited in America, Europe, and Australia. One of his radiantly evocative paintings is in the permanent collection of the Yad Vashem Art Museum in Israel; and his book, The Color of Prophecy, a collection of his visionary oils, conceptualizes stories from the Torah, about which he writes mesmerizing interpretive analyses. This reader owns this book as well, and considers it an artistic treasure, as well as a revelatory treasury of biblical thought.
Kuzmino Chronicles will haunt and enrich you. It will invade your soul.

would make a great documentary
By Lori
I appreciated this book very much, and it's hard to imagine surviving what they have, but I feel that it would make a much better documentary than a book. It was just bits and pieces of what they went through, in their own words, being interviewed, and in between was facts about the camps and such. There was also a lot of paperwork and records which were interesting to see. This book was great for the family to document their life and survival for future generations but for those that don't know them personally, it was a hard read. As I said, would have loved to see this as a documentary, to be able to really see and hear their stories. They are so brave and have made it through so much and I have much respect for them.
