The adventures of Sy Goldman
By Sophia Grace
Sai Goldman has a conventional life. Very unusual. He gets up every morning and going to his job. Very Un- interesting place.
All he does is sell suits in Brooklyn. And Sy doing it for a very long time. But one day Sy retiring from his job and travels to the golden shores of California, or rather Santa Monica. There in Santa Monica he actually start living.
With his friend they go on a journey full of fascinating and surprising with his friend trying to find out who killed their partner.
The book is written in a fun and easy to read. Recommended.

I totally went back and looked at the map...and you will too!

I was not sure what to expect when I first picked up Sy Goldman and the Case of the Beantown Butcher...the first thoughts that came to mind were "Geriatric Murder Mystery". Right from the opening pages this story grabbed me, it was written not as a 3rd person narrative but from the quirky perspective of a 79 year old Sy Goldman penning a letter to his 6 week old great-grandson Matthew. Immediately this made it feel less of a book and more like a beloved family member recanting the shenanigans of their youth to me...this book does not read like a story it speaks like a conversation.
One of my favorite quotes from the story was the opening paragraph to the second chapter of the book: "Where to begin? As they say, let’s begin at the beginning, and in the beginning god created the earth! And then he created the Bagel! Lox! The Knish! And then man!Ha! Okay let’s not go back that far, hmm..."
For 50 years Sy had a lived the "American Dream" as a a haberdasher in Brooklyn and then "retiring" to Santa Monica after the death of his wife and when his beloved hometown had become unfamiliar and full of "yuppies". He moves into an assisted living facility where he should have lived out his days enjoying the view, chat with people and observe as a self proclaimed personal neighborhood watchman, binge watching "SVU", "CSI" and "Murder She Wrote" and puffing away on his "medicinal marijuana" laced e-cig with his two room mates Alexey and Murray.
One afternoon Sy comes home to find Murray on the balcony of their suite bleeding out with his throat sliced open from ear to ear! The cops ruled it a suicide and the case was closed. Sy and Alexey believed it to be a homicide and decided to take matters in their own hands and play detectives. Being familiar with Sy and his love to report every little thing in the neighborhood, the head of the local Police Department's Criminal Investigative Division assigned a recently transferred Detective Callahan to be their community liaison.
Detective Amy Callahan starts off believing that Sy and Alexey were just grasping at strings investigating the matter but as the story reaches its climax its evident that the boys are onto something and quite possibly in quite a bit of danger! Who knew they were about to stumble upon the "Beantown Butcher" who wanted for organized crime, drugs and freelance contract killing in the Boston area from the 1970’s through his disappearance in the early 1990’s!?
Oh Sy...what have you and Alexey gotten yourselves into?

A fun read!
By The Bohemian Housewife
I accepted this book mostly because the main Character was completely different. He was a retired senior. I loved the idea, I haven’t read a book where the main character isn’t younger and attractive. Sy Goldman is something else, though he is almost 80, he still has a ton of spunk. He is proof that retired life doesn’t mean a boring life. His story got exciting after his roommate’s death was ruled a suicide. Sy and Alex(the other roommate) were on the case! They knew that it was a murder, even if the police thought that the weed was making them crazy. Yes, weed – Sy and his friends are a bunch of retired stoners, which I found to be quite funny. I thought the characters were well written and the storyline was well laid out. Timothy Brennan had me laughing from the start. I loved all the twists and turns of this book. It plays out like a TV show. All around I found this book to be entertaining and I would probably read the second. 4/5
