Review
This collection of meditations on loving God's law by Glenda Mathes is a jewel. Mathes's primary aim is to encourage her readers to discover delight in God's law and commandments, especially as this is expressed in Psalm 119. She fulfills this aim admirably in a series of brief meditations, each of which brims with helpful insights into the riches of the good gift of God s holy law. While Mathes observes that loving law clashes in modern ears like clanging cymbals, her meditations invite the reader to joy in God and His good commandments. --Cornelis Venema, president and professor of doctrinal studies, Mid-America Reformed Seminary
Discovering Delight focuses on a timely subject, the relationship a Christian has with God's law, in an accessible way. If you like the idea of daily devotionals but wish they went a little deeper, this is the book for you. Glenda Mathes offers a commendable style of commentary-meets-personal-devotional. She provides the context, meaning, and personal application of Scripture that will lead the reader to greater pleasure and true joy in God's law. --Aimee Byrd, author of Housewife Theologian and cohost of the Mortification of Spin podcast.

For those who desire to deepen their love and delight of the Lord, His Law and His Word.
By L. Eischen
In today’s culture mentioning God’s law is often met with raised eyebrows or swift accusations of being a legalist.
But King David said, “Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”
In Discovering Delight, Glenda deftly illustrates how our own delight will be found in meditating on God’s law just as King David proclaimed.
“Hold on to God’s Word. Lift that lamp before you and let it illuminate your way. Keep walking on the right path. Delight in the light!”
As a devotional there are thirty one meditations. Each meditation begins with a Scripture reading and an individual Scripture passage. Each meditation ends with a section of questions for reflection.
The majority of the focus is developed around Psalm 119; though other Psalms and Scriptures are employed. Sections of Reformed Confessions and authors quotes are integrated throughout as well.
“Psalm 119 is the epitome of acrostic poetry. Each of its twenty-two stanzas highlights a consecutive letter, and that letter also begins all eight verses of the section. This complex construction forms the trellis on which the vine of heartfelt prayer climbs and blooms with delight in God and His Word.”
Each meditation leaves a distinct impression of the insight and wisdom Glenda possesses through her counsel from the Scriptures she provides to her readers. In other words, she speaks as a woman who has mined the Scriptures in times of trial or suffering to find instruction and comfort.
“Do you ever feel that you don’t belong? Maybe you lack a close-knit family or tight group of friends. Maybe everyone at church seems to move in their own circles. But if you believe in Jesus Christ, you’re part of a wonderful community. The Spirit assures believers that they are children of God and co-heirs with Christ.”
She has sought her Lord and found Him faithful. And she is exhorting others to do the same.
“When you feel your spirit shriveling in the smoke of your fiery trials, read God’s life-giving law and delight in it. Turn your eyes to Christ, the living Word.”
Three of the daily meditations I treasured specifically were Day 9 – Melting Soul; Day 13 – Living Comfort; and Day 17 – Endless Perfection.
Discovering Delight: 31 Meditations On Loving God’s Law is a devotion I recommend for those who desire to deepen their love and delight of the Lord, His Law and His Word.
“The subject of loving God’s law attracted me because I needed to know what the Bible says about delight. It is a lesson I still study. As with so many things, the more I learn, the more I see how much I have yet to learn.”

Excellent Devotional on God's Law and Why We Should Love It
By Michael C. Boling
The word law as it relates to Scripture often gets a bad rap. Grace often seems to be the more popular term of focus. Law is often viewed as something of an Old Testament or old covenant term that while important, is perhaps something we have found a bit of freedom from given our status as New Testament believers. Is that really what Scripture says and how we are to approach the law, specifically God’s law? Glenda Mathes, in her excellent devotional aptly titled Discovering Delight: 31 Mediatations on Loving God’s Law, provides the reader with a proper biblical perspective on this subject.
As noted, this short yet powerful book is a series of meditations specifically focused on bringing to light the importance of God’s law and why we should be madly in love with obeying God’s commands. Mathes roots her meditations in the Psalms, with a great deal of time spent working through the entirety of Psalm 119, the largest Psalm and the Psalm that deals most heavily with the term law and what our approach should be to God’s law.
As Mathes so rightly notes in the beginning of this book, “Today’s Christians don’t want to read about law. They want to revel in gospel and grace. But the Bible clearly links law with love.” The majesty of Psalm 119 for instance in extolling the need to love God’s law is not an isolated perspective in Scripture. Mathes correctly states “Other Psalms, Old Testament passages, and New Testament texts specifically extol God’s law and encourage believers to love the written as well as the living Word.”
In each and every daily meditation provided in this book, Mathes explores what a certain text, in the case of this book a passage or passages in the Psalms, has to say about God’s law and our response to it. She not only examines the passage(s) in question with astute and sound exegesis, she also uses valuable examples of what loving God’s law looks like in practice. Additionally, she provides reflection questions at the conclusion of each meditation as additional food for thought, helping the reader dig even deeper into the passage with the focus of application and understanding.
If you are in love with God you will keep His commands. This means you will have a passion for Scripture and a desire to be a person of the Book, one who truly delights in God’s law. I highly recommend this devotional for all believers, especially in an age where the law has far too often been forgotten. After working through this devotional, I am quite confident you will have a renewed passion for Scripture and a renewed desire to be the obedient bride to which we have been called.

A Wonderful Aid to Meditation Upon and Delighting in God's Law
By William D. Perkins
In this book we have a helping hand in developing a love for and delight in God’s law. The book begins with a mediation on each of five law exalting poems, Psalms 1,19,37,40 and 112 which lead us in seeing that the origin of our delight is seeing the character of God in both creation and in God’s law. This motivates us to want to know more. There are then 22 meditations on God’s law from the 22 stanzas of Psalm 119. The book closes with 2 promises from Old Testament Prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah giving us clear pictures of what taking such delight will result in. A meditation from Romans 7 then shows us that only in Christ are we enabled to love the law. The book closes with a celebratory meditation on Revelation 19.
Although this is a book about God’s law and by our old nature that law is abhorrent to us, Glenda Mathes does an excellent job of winning us over to delighting in the law in several of her mediations. She does this not by clever tales or pretty language, but by a solid hermeneutic always drawing our attention to the scripture itself, the meaning of the text in the original languages, how genre affects our understanding of the text and by the analogy of scripture. One example of this is her mediation on Psalm 19 in chapter 2.
Psa 19:7-9 KJV The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. (8) The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. (9) The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
“Notice all the descriptors? The law of the Lord is perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and righteous. It is the ultimate ideal. Note also the many present participles, “ing” verbs in this section. What is the law doing? It is converting the soul, making wise the simple, rejoicing the heart, enlightening the eyes, and enduring forever. Such action verb phrases vibrantly depict God’s law as living and active (see also Heb 4:12).”
Each chapter includes questions for reflection, helping the reader to make practical application.
This book will remain near my reading chair for help in frequent feasting upon and delighting in God’s law.
