Gary Kassay and Duke Becker triumph again

I have enjoyed the first 3 Kassay books. This one was a very good read and had me in suspense until the end. The ending was also a surprise but looking back not unexpected. I highly recommend his books. I also picked up his 4th book and am anxious to get started

This is the third Kassay book I have read, and the first I was given to review. The writing improves with each book, and the stories are engaging. I like the continued development of the secondary characters, and the presence of a separate sub-story within the novel was a nice touch. I actually thought it could have been developed into its own main story, and the antagonist further brought out, but a great diversion within the main plot nonetheless.

My only complaint is the lack of contractions, which happens too frequently throughout the novel. It makes dialogue between characters awkward and cumbersome, as it doesn't feel natural. I found myself contacting words myself as I read the story.

All in all, well worth the 5.99 price for an old school feeling "gumshoe" style story, and I will definitely continue to read Mr. Kassay's work.

Excellent!

I recently had the pleasure of reading Greg Thornberg's "Fatherhood and the Pursuit of Holiness," and I enjoyed it exceedingly. I thoroughly recommend this book.

Thornberg's work is well-researched and is filled with thorough Scriptural citations and well-researched statistics regarding the role of fathers within the family and the damage done to the family, the church, and the nation when that role of fathers is diminished or removed altogether. He offers excellent guidelines for building and encouraging families in their spiritual growth, and especially in how to grow by recognizing and encouraging biblical fatherhood.

Some points in this book may surprise the mainstream church. For example, Thornberg deals extensively with the issue of modern youth ministry. Usually considered an essential of the modern church, statistics reveal that reliance on youth ministries (Sunday school, youth groups, etc.) has actually damaged families over time - primarily by taking over the role of the father (in the discipleship of young people) and outsourcing it to the church. The same holds for state-led education, which has again outsourced the role of fathers to the state. Thornberg also deals extensively with the issue of child-bearing and how the modern church's outlook on often denying the blessing of children is far from biblical.

Thornberg's message may not be mainstream, but his words have both strong Scriptural support and statistical back-up.

The book ends with an extensive appendix of resource lists for families to use in their family devotions and spiritual life.

I highly recommend this book to those looking to understand the biblical nature of fatherhood and how the Christian church can return to the biblical model.

I was in tears by page 30 and then lots of tears when I hit the pages in the 80’s.
What a roller coaster of a journey. I hope they keep copies at all brain injury facilities for others to read so that those that have patients and/or family there know they are not alone in their crusade.

The author, Patricia Hill, did a wonderful job in describing her daily life with Aaron for all those years. She is not selfish but a loving kind mother. Her description of Aaron's condition, his seizures, fevers, were vivid and full of understanding what he was undergoing. I think the book should help others who are going through the same situations.

A Magnificent Piece of Work!

This is a really amazing book. First of all, everyone who has ever intersected the portion of The Twilight Zone known as Otsego County, Michigan should read this book. Likewise, it should be mandatory reading for every high-school student in Northern Michigan and is strongly recommended for everyone who lives in small or remote communities where criminal networking within local government occurs as a matter of routine. Now, finally, more than a quarter century after this wicked and utterly ludicrous true story began, readers can receive a reasonable, fair, and largely unbiased condensed examination of unspeakably evil behavior perpetrated by prosecutors, police, and perhaps judges against five entirely innocent men, two of whom spent nearly eight years imprisoned not only for a crime they did not even commit but for a death which may simply have been nothing more than a drug overdose.

If this story were a novel, it would be gut-wrenchingly horrifying. The fact that it actually happened and that (presumably) every detail written is supported by court documentation is the most horrifying aspect of all. This can happen to absolutely anyone who happens to live in any place where the police and courts operate as a single gang Hellbent on pursuing its own goals, regardless of justice or decency. Much of the corruption in the modern American legal system depends upon the widespread belief that the most egregious immoralities would never be perpetrated by prosecutors, police, or judges, yet the story of the Tobias "murder" and subsequent trials and exonerations demonstrate clearly that there are in this world at least some demonically evil people will do absolutely ANYTHING whatsoever to anyone whomsoever for any reason or no reason whatsoever and have to power to completely get away with it.

Mardi Link writes in an entirely readable style, and there are few typographical errors, the most egregious of which is on page 4 where the etymology attributed to "Gaylord" should actually be attributed to "Otsego". Beyond that, the only noteworthy possible typographical error occurs in the epilogue in which "guilty until proven innocent" appears to be transposed for "innocent until proven guilty".

Despite its 400 pages, I read it carefully and critically over the course of 24 hours, making notes in the wonderfully wide margins provided. Also noteworthy is the chapter arrangement. The story is told chronologically in tiny chapters, making it easy for people to take frequent breaks or to read meaningful portions in short bursts. As soon as I finished it, the one thing I wish I had time to do was to immediately check all of my notes, compare it against online sources, and then read the entire work again.

Captivating

Following six years of research Ms. Link exposes the incompetent investigation, abusive prosecution, covert wrong doing by law enforcement and perjured testimony that sent five innocent men to jail.

Originally a crime reporter, Mardi Link brings to her books the ability to surgically dissect the forensic and legal technicalities of a complex criminal investigation. Combining her talents for prodigious and tenacious research with a gift for expressive and easy to read prose she draws the reader deeply into the story.

The Roman goddess of Justice wore a blindfold to symbolize the fair, impartial and objective administration of the law. This story challenges the idiom "Justice is blind".

The most sacred tenet of the American criminal justice system is the presumption of innocence....that the prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt, each element of the criminal charge. This book reveals how that fundamental principle is desecrated.

There are three elements to this story:

The vulnerability of the innocent to the misguided and sometimes malicious intent of those in positions of authority and trust.

The cognitive failure in critical thinking known as confirmation bias. This fault results in our looking only for evidence that supports our beliefs and ignoring anything that contradicts those beliefs. This is especially dangerous when our beliefs are little more than prejudices. Confirmation bias was rampant and contagious in this true crime story.

Mental illness spreads its tragic consequences well beyond its primary victim.

I am eager to rate this captivating and at times disturbing book 5+ stars. It is a terrific read.

My advice: Keep your blood pressure pills close at hand.

Can Justice Prevail?

As a person who went to high school with 2 of the principle characters and with a brother of the victim I had a hard time believing the murder and trials until I read this book. This book put all the facts together in an order that could be easily understood. This is a great book because it deals with facts in detail and does not show any evidence of fiction. I am appalled at how our prosecutor handled this. How he manipulated the witnesses and evidence to suit his personal needs and emotions which produced results for his personal needs but not fair results for the people of the county or state. I like most people in this county believed one or more of these suspects was involved with this murder but now I do not think this anymore. This book should be developed into a movie so more people could see how this prosecutor manipulations and unfairness, the police actions with witnesses and the decisions (good or bad) of judges can really make a travesty of the justice system and of the beliefs of common man that justice will prevail.

It's a good step

I've got a idea on a higher level. Legalize street drugs and give them away to addicts who can't afford their street drugs! This stops 99% of stealing, theft ,burglaries, and stop jailing people for getting high! It's ok to go kill your brothers while fighting for your country in war? Are you sick? But it's illegal to smoke crack, f--k that. I'm so happy these old controlling , conservatives are leaving the planet finally ,thankyouJesus please get rid of them!

An integral figure in the backroom scheming that lead to the reckless Jameson Raid, Shaw remained convinced in the raid's disastrous aftermath that the attempt to seize South Africa for the empire was the right choice. And yet, this arch imperialist also showed herself to be a humanitarian, when she organized care for 250,000 Belgian refugees during WWI.

About the Author

Jos Scharrer was born in the coastal town of East London, South Africa. At age twenty-one she began her writing career with East London's Daily Dispatch, quickly rising to the position of feature editor.

After marrying Richard Scharrer, she moved to Amsterdam, where she lived for several years. Upon returning to South Africa she worked as an advertising copywriter for VZ Lund and Tredoux, eventually becoming the company's executive creative director before transitioning to the same position with BBDO South Africa. In 1984, Scharrer founded Scharrer Advertising, growing the company into one of the nation's largest independent agencies.

Scharrer is the recipient of many advertising awards, including two Loerie Grand Prix awards, a Cannes Advertising Festival award, and several New York Advertising Festival awards.

A mother of three and grandmother of six, Scharrer wrote her debut book, The Journalist, about her famous great-aunt, Flora Shaw.

An inspirational tale of a remarkable woman

A gripping tale of how a woman broke the glass ceiling of journalism over 120 years ago. Her adventures, achievements and contradictions which help make her the powerful Colonial Editor of The Times make a fascinating tale. A great inspiration to women today, it chronicles how Flora Shaw achieved what she did and how she came to be referred to by the New York Times as "one of the remarkable women of her age". It also tells the story of how she marrried at the age of 50, the foremost man in the scramble for Africa - Frederick Lugard - recognised today as the founder and first governor of Nigeria - a name which Flora coined. Towards the later years of her life Flora - as Lady Lugard, was awarded the DBE (Dame of the British Empire) for her great humanitarian work in assisting 250,000 Belgian refugees in WW1.

A truly remarkable story about a woman who had the most fascinating life. Whether you live in South Africa or not I think you will find this story really worth reading about a woman that I for one really knew nothing about, A really good read

The list of colourful characters interwoven throughout the pages reads like the Who’s Who of British political power and influen

Through an uncanny gift of creative dialogue Jos Scharrer brings the character of Flora Shaw to life with an immediacy that projects the reader into the conversation as if being an actual participant. The book captures the spirit of the British Empire in its heyday with Flora Shaw at the helm of one of its most influential voices, The Times newspaper. The list of colourful characters interwoven throughout the pages reads like the Who’s Who of British political power and influence, culture and high society. When this is coupled with Flora Shaw’s nature as a fearless traveller who ventured into very remote places (think the Australian outback or the Canadian Yukon) in the best journalistic traditions of getting the story out, the personality that emerges is one imbued with incredible determination and ambition. That all this occurred in the late 19th century long before the Suffragette movement speaks volumes as to Flora Shaw’s inherent skill in being able to analyse and capture in words the critical issues of the day. She was also no shrinking violet when confidently speaking in public, a rare occurrence in Victorian times, as she did when cross examined by some of the sharpest legal minds of the day at Westminster Hall during the Parliamentary Enquiry into the Jameson Raid. But, all done in a quietly self-confident, feminine manner which belied her steely backbone. Not that it ended there as much was to follow, most notably in Hong King and Nigeria ─ hers a long life lived to the hilt. A woman well before her time portrayed in an inspirational story ─ a story that has remained hidden for far too long and which needs to be told. I have no hesitation in recommending this outstanding and very thought-provoking book.

I just finished reading this book It is wonderful. I gave it five stars. I was very impressed with the historical development of wine and wineries in San Diego County. I am quite familiar with the area having lived and worked there in the 1980's and I am already excited for our next trip to San Diego ! Looking forward to exploring the area from this fresh and fun perspective. You bet this book will be my tour guide. I certainly hope the local small vintners are able to sustain there quaint unique style

Easy to read, straight forward guide to finding wine and wine tasting in San Diego county. My sister, brother-in-law and I recently used this guide for an afternoon of wine tasting and had a great time. The winery descriptions are good and give the reader/wine drinker a good idea of what to expect at each winery. The easily reachable San Diego wine country has a charming, small town feel and this guide is a great companion for both the casual or serious wine lover. Highly recommend

A different and important book on leadership

This is an outstanding and accessible book. Comparing Herod to Jesus is not only a brilliant filter to examine leadership, it is clearly the parallel the Gospels invite us to make. Dr. McNitzky offers realistic and practical guidelines and questions to point toward servant leadership rather than an empty formula for being a corporate officer for Christ. This is clearly the hard-earned wisdom and reflections of someone who has tried to use Herod's ways and realized that they fail to yield Jesus-results.

None of that is to say that this book is only for Christians. Any person in any leadership position could easily learn from and benefit from the relationship-focused wisdom found in this work.

A leadership and discipleship book well worth the read. I read it in one sitting! I am grateful to David McNitzky for his honesty and his ability to take very large concepts like adoption and "kingdom of Heaven" and make them accessible and relatable. This book is a gift to all seeking the "faith of Jesus" not just "belief in Jesus" lifestyle. Loved it and grateful to have it in my library!

"One light does not have to dim for another to shine"

McNitzky's narrative structure is wholly unique and engaging. He casts several concurrent story lines forward through his pages--- a socio-historical study of Herod and Second Temple Judaism. A brutally intimate look at being a pastor and leader in the 21st century. A joy witness to AHUMC's inheritance from our Father. All of these lines end at the same point of epiphany (which in lieu of trying to fit into a review, I'll invite the reader to receive through reading). I'm not sure I've ever read an author humble enough to allow his end chapters to serve as a concrete example of inheritance. McNitzky "gifts" this prime real-estate - in this case the closing pages of his first book - to leaders he's mentored. The risk is striking in its ability to illustrate our relationship with G-d and our relationship with one another - We are loved, we are believed in, we are family and as co-authors and leaders in His Kingdom, we are free to receive and share this legacy.

Oliver Heywood (1630-1702) was an English Puritan pastor who was deprived of his pulpit for his Protestant beliefs. Dr. Mick has done an amazing thing in taking a number of the puritan classics and updating the language without in any way detracting from the depth of theology or the rich writing style that so many have come to appreciate from the Puritans. This title by Oliver Heywood gives the Christian a strong, scripture-based foundation for an obedient life of private prayer. I highly recommend it and am very grateful to Dr. Mick for his continuing efforts in putting these gems into the hands of believers hungry for the deep yet practical writing of these great men of courage and faith.

Fast paced sexy thriller with a lot of good stuff on privacy and psychology

I’m now a big fan of Agent Kari Kendall. She is probably the best female hero and I hope this book takes off so I can get more. The book is a page turner and is good at diving into privacy concerns without slowing down the action. I would like to read more books like this one sort of a thinking person’s thriller / cop story without being cynical.

Having enjoyed the Bureau series after playing them on Xbox Indie and IOS, I was excited for the kickstarter and donated $50. I was sad to see it fall through, but I was happy that something came of the ideas. This book is a fun, sexy, and smart read, and an easy recommendation to anyone looking for a good, mature detective story.

Both a must read for fans of the Bureau series and newcomers

Bureau: Secrets Sold is a novel that retells the story of the xbox live video game, Bureau: Kendall Rising (which is a remake of an earlier game, Bureau: Agent Kendall). From someone who has played (and enjoyed) both, this novel did not disappoint. Since I am a fan of the games, delving into this story again for the third time was not a repetitive task.

While the story is familiar to someone who has played the previous version, the deeper characterizations and alternate scenarios in this novel kept the narrative fresh for a dedicated fan of the series. It weaves in current events into the novel to better illustrate the point of its message about the government and the things we think are secret. It's an easy read, but also an extremely well-done, thought-provoking tale.

For anyone who has no prior knowledge of the Bureau series, they should not shy away from this novel. Even if they didn't play any of the previous games (including the squel to the story, Beureau: Shattered Slipper) they will not be confused on what is going on or missing important information. I do however, encourage playing the games as well as they are enjoyable.

In short, Bureau: Secrets Sold is an exceptional book for fans of the series (or newcomers) should read.

Jennifer Grant is the author of three previous works of nonfiction: Love You More, MOMumental, and Disquiet Time. A former health and parenting columnist for the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times Media newspapers, Grant contributes to her.meneutics, Fullfill, and other publications. Living Wholeheartedly is the Way to Go: A Practical and Timely Book for Moms of All Stripes

Jennifer Grant, in her new release Wholehearted Living: Five-Minute Reflections for Modern Moms, begins by outlining a few things that get my momsense stirring and my momtuition raving...in a good way.

She calls the book "a 'pause' button for mothers who want to take a break from talk of juice boxes and snow pants in favor of confronting their fears or reconnecting with their dreams."

The book delivers what it promises. I'll admit I didn't have the time to read all 365 of the daily reflections, but I did sample through them enough to know this is the kind of book that:

1. Most moms need to read and dip into and out of.
2. Will be a great gift for quite a few of the moms I know.
3. Won't go out of style anytime soon.

The book divides the year into three parts: Reflect, Risk, and Rest. You begin in January with reflection, and then, as May begins, you start to look at risk, and you end the year, just as school starts up in September, with rest.

It's a pattern that spoke to my life, to the way the ebbs and flows of my own experience of momness.

While Grant references talk that makes me think of moms with younger children, I don't necessarily think this book is limited to the scope of young moms or moms with young families. That's the place she's writing from, and it's a place many moms have been and/or are. It's a hard place, a crucible unlike any other.

The reflections aren't long; their brevity is almost unparalleled in a book of this sort. And yet, as Grant herself notes, "a good five minutes actually makes a difference, affecting how we relate with others and how we perceive our lives for the rest of the day."

Opening and using this book — whether you dip into it or swim around for a while — won't leave you with something else to do. Grant has explicitly avoided doing more than giving you a reason to sit and reflect with her for five minutes. She's planting a seed in those five (or less) minutes, one that may just sprout into more throughout your day.

Though this book has many Catholic undertones, it's not explicitly Catholic in the way that many books I endorse and read are. You could as easily give this to any Christian friend (practicing or not), and she would appreciate the quote or scripture that opens each day, the short reflection, and the one or two reflection questions that close each day.
This truly is a book, as Grant says in the introduction, "for moments when you feel drawn toward the divine, as well as for those times when you feel like your frailties are holding you captive and you really just want to stand in the corner, face the wall, and scream."

Perfect gift for a young Mom

This is such a great book for Moms who feel overwhelmed, frustrated, inadequate--all those things we feel when we're trying to raise little humans while being fully human ourselves. Jennifer Grant gets it. She's been there recently enough to be empathetic but is almost out of the all hands on deck years. These daily thoughts will help any Mom center herself for the day and remember that she's not alone in her struggles.

This book would make a lovely gift for a Mom in your life. The author writes with wisdom, faith and a dose of 'you-can-do-this' encouragement.

I so enjoyed my daily time with this book that I was willing to wake up a little earlier each morning to read it. It made me laugh. It made me think. It helped me beat myself up less and give myself a little more credit. It made me feel less alone. I bought copies for several mom friends and they had the same reaction. Jennifer Grant is a warm and conversational writer. She isn't a preacher, she's a reacher-- touching the reader with her own ups and downs as a mom, wife, sister, daughter and friend.
